No problem.  The issue the army runs into is that we fold to mortal wounds, don't have a ton of movement, no bonuses to cast/unbind and others I'm sure.  Our shooting is expensive and the woods don't do anything against the shooting and magic from KO/Seraphon/LRL/Tzeentch.

I really enjoy playing the army and will be sticking with it for a long time.  I'm also building Living City and there are some dirty things that Sylvaneth can do in that army.

Good to know! I'll  keep an eye out against mortal wound heavy armies, my local club is a bit of a mix of casual and 'competetive' (not tournament level thankfully for my casual self) so hopefully I should be able to have some pretty fun matchups even against tougher opponents. And yeah the shoot & move command ability looks pretty fun for a fair few units, especially for flinging a drycha or alarielle into a unit or onto an objective for a bit of a giggle. It was one of the reasons I wanted some bow kurnoths to allow that movement.

I presume that since awakened wyldwoods have the overgrown wilderness rule model height for them isn't too big an issue? I was wanting to build some coastal themed ones to fit my army theme a bit better  (coral colour scheme & tricorns) and probably won't be able to realistically get the height their trees usually go up to (unless i find some good scale palm trees), also less height makes for easier storage and transport.

  2. @Pennydude thanks for the rundown! It's always helpful to get advice and opinions on ways to utilise units and abilities :)

Spites are something I was considering going large squads on as I quite like them but if I grab enough for the battalion I can still try them out at different sizes, I like the price of 20 but the 32mm bases and 1inch range is perhaps a point against that. Something to test out with the 15 for outcasts at least :) The more I'm reading and learning about sylvaneth the more it's looking like they can be built in a lot of different ways and be fun, that's definitely a big plus for me for an army!

Welcome to the trees!  My general rule of thumb with Kurnoths is to run Swords in 3s, Scythes in 6s, and Bows in at least 2x3 or even 3x3.  I would build your first Kurnoths as Swords since you mentioned getting Alarielle for CoS (I'm building into CoS myself).   I think it's a pretty good place to start at 1000pts and I love me some Drycha.

For that, I would probably go as Winterleaf if using Sword Kurnoths.  Exploding 6s on melee hit rolls is effectively +1 to hit.  If you were to build this into a full army, my suggested next steps would be to get another 5 Spite-Revs for access to the Outcast battalion, a Start Collecting box for more Dryads, converting B-Wych into a B-Wraith, and either magnetizing the Treeman kit or building as a Treelord Ancient.

Thanks for the advice :) The bow kurnoths I have already as they were an ebay grab but I'll definitely pick myself up some sword ones too when I can (nice to have a toolbox of options for alarielle summons and general list building)

Do spite revs work well in 5 man units? Or should I try and look to have the points to up them to larger squads in the batallion? And I presume the treelord ancient is pretty much mandatory due to the extra wyldwoods? Bit of a shame as I'd rather spend the points on bodies but having more woods for shenanigans can definitely be a big plus I'm sure. And finally is winterleaf generally useful for a lot of units? I can see spites loving exploding 6's with their volume of attacks but don't know if at higher points with more kurnoths such as scythe units I'd be better off looking into other subfactions.

  4. Hey all!

So as part of my living city CoS I've been starting to get some sylvaneth (inc Alarielle because she's cool) to sort of give me a toolbox of extra units I can use and summon and realised that I basically may as well get the book and field them as a sylvaneth army. I have put together a quick 1k point list including some of the stuff I have / would like to get that I'm hoping should be workable as it contains a bit of range, two heroes and a fair chunk of bodies that hopefully will do me well in low points games. I haven't decided on traits / artefacts / subfaction as I have only just got the book really and haven't been able to sit through and decide which would work best for what I want to achieve. Any C&C would be welcome.

  5. September month 1 pledge. Including Alarielle since I bought, built and painted her only last week so she counts XD

Starting slow and simple but may end up getting more done, we'll see. Hoping to build up to a 1k list (excluding alarielle for now else it would only be like 2 months) and want to try and achieve this by the end of 2020. If I manage this quicker than planned I will totally give myself stretch goals ;)

    Absolutely!
and it’s also definitely @Lowki’s call starting now. ;)

Thanks! I'll get a first month plan sorted when I get home today :) Hopefully some of the sylvaneth ebay rescues I've got coming in will arrive this week so I can get a good start in fixing, priming & painting.

Looking forward to see your take on the Sylvaneth (and your Ararielle conversion), one of my favorite armies, and Arielle is such a great model imo.

Thanks! I've gone for a coral scheme based on this: (Because luminescent leaves/tree ends with the new necron paint are great fun)

     images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSj8m4DTfDM5fVr6wOX2e2

For the tree parts and I'm thinking of doing the normally spectral parts as skin, since my living city is my undead pirate project it would be cool to give them a bit of a more horror sort of thene, like fake sylvaneth being created from horrible magics and body stitching sort of stuff. Something to test and see if it works at least,  if not I can easily do spectral for them.

My Alarielle I bought, built and began painting last so will definitely be able to include some pictures of her for this months work :) She's mostly done, need to get the airbrush out for her hermit crab beetle though. The painting itself is gonna be mostly just contrast because something quick, easy and colourfully fun is nice to ease myself back into things rather than trying to tackle lots of layering, highlights whilst juggling life stuff with time constraints.

  7. Space for one very late joiner on this thread? ;)

Been working on some living city this month and realising that I'm totally ending up veering creepily close to having a 1k sylvaneth (or more) army thanks to wanting a summoning toolbox for my pirate alarielle conversion and sylvaneth units within the city in general. Would be nice to try and use something like this to push me back into painting after a difficult lockdown of very waning hobbying.

  8. From my years of finding them a pain to fight in my friends Aelf army pre-CoS I am quite partial to the idea of phoenix guard as a battleline, hard hitting and hard to kill and the tough anointed isn't bad as a general I don't think, especially on frost phoenix to debuff people whilst cackling manically as you refuse to die (add in living cities wound regeneration...)

I think there are a lot of pretty great battleline options though, especially battleline-if's as you get some pretty meaty units that you're probably gonna be taking anyway! Otherwise I hear pretty good stuff about Darkshards & Eternal guard as options.

Of course the real option is to take big blocks of flagellants and surprise your opponent by them getting better when they lose models.

  9. Definitely gonna give another bump to cities of sigmar, can vary playstyle up a lot thanks to their diverse range of models, great for conversions if you like that or otherwise super cool for featuring a fun mix of races or going primarily one type (e.g. aelves, humans, duardin etc)

Some recommendations I would give for defensive would be:
-Sisters of the watch - A good shooting unit who get extra shots when they stand still
-Eternal guard - Useful spearman blob who are better when they stand still
-Freeguild - The freeguild general has a command ability to give freeguild units +1 to hit and wound but stops them moving, great for a defensive formation and/or gunline
-Phoenix guard - Every time they take a wound and fail their armour save they get a 4+ chance to ignore that wound, great defensively in a large group and can do some nasty damage. Also a unit that doesn't need to stand still to be good so useful if you want to be moving.

You can then supplement these with more mobile units to capture objectives like the stormcast evocators on dracolines, freeguild outriders etc

Another great unit to look at are shadow warriors, some nice shooting and instead of deploying you can sneakily hide them in reserve before dropping them out onto a useful objective or spot you need to threaten.

  10. Blood knights are obviously the best because they are blood knights. Which are the best.

They are vampires, which makes them cool. They are also knights, which also makes them cool. That means they are two times cool, which is more than one so therefore they're very cool.

Also they are on horses because they are too cool and awesome to walk.

I am definitely not biased and this has nothing to do with blood knights having been the first unit of AoS I fell in love with.

On a more serious note I don't think there is any single best battleline, and if there is it would probably change very quickly as often seems to be the case. If discussing battleline options I would second cities of sigmar due to not only the amount they get but the fact that you can build incredibly different playstyles due to the battleline all being quite different.

As a non competetive player who barely looks at a lot of armies I probably can't comment on any particularly strong battleline but I would like to give an honourable mention to the battleline for Lumineth being in my opinion pretty good in terms of internal balance between the options, which I think has to do with the fact they have similar abilities (mortals on 6's), it makes for less versatility in playstyle but allows multiple options to achieve the same sort of goal in combat but in different ways and with different additional versatility. Aka spears make great defence, hammers/picks can be taken in small units and receive different synergies, bows allow to attack from range and can ignore line of sight, and cavalry give mobility to get key targets or grab objectives a little easier.

But none of these options are blood knights so... y'know...

Comes in at 220pts. I took the liberty of making up a couple of rules (dangerous ashes, legacy of khorne) so unlikely to get to use it outside of a narrative game but I couldnt resist the idea.

    20200711_220539.jpg

For when you use them in narrative games have you considered adding the Khorne keyword to them? It may not see much mechanical use but it could make sense considering the legacy of khorne ability?

Also the abilities you've added look pretty cool story wise. Though the magical feedback hitting every Skaven looks pretty painful buuut will make for some very funny moments. Do you have a particular story reason as to why it only affects the Skaven and not everyone else?

Can you make a more closer photo of the ehad of the miniature ? I love the conversion!!!

Thank you ^_^ She was fun to make and paint. (Also ignore the magnet i was testing strength through base)[upload butchered the quality a tad, sorry. Only difficult to see bits are the small red lines coming out of her eyes as this pic makes them a little fuzzy]

  13. My daughter's of khaine hero, still thinking up story details but will probably have her as a priestess of sorts and likely the leader of my temple or someone high up within at the least (need to remind myself of the heirarchical lore) Will work out a warscroll tomorrow with the full book (or ebook pdf) in front of me. Still deciding whether I want a bestial companion or not, though the model might be busy enough without one.received_412375486388918.jpeg.0d64b56452c2e6a9ba661d838b822ad8.jpegreceived_229453501354727.jpeg.2ca3ca9b1e2e89eec6fae0131d42da49.jpegreceived_206822517268241.jpeg.271af898ae54398e45928de332864b53.jpeg

  14. Soulblight getting some fun with cheaper blood knights and anvil of apotheosis fun eh? Well damn... now I'm gonna need to repair my dragon knight blood knights I already made and work out how to convert up some more. Finding a kit to convert that's less prone to snapping would be very nice.

Edit: I'm wondering actually if Kavalos deathriders wouldn't work, undead horsies and it would be easy enough to pop some vampirey looking dudes atop them.

  15. So quarentine unfortunately has me sapped for motivation when it comes to building and painting... HOWEVER i have totally done at least SOME stuff. So whilst I have pretty much no list in mind for this army anymore here's some of the cool undead city or sigmar pirate conversions I've done.

(Apologies for bad photos my phone camera is literally cracked. When I finish these I wanna get some digital camera shots of them done)

    Hurricanum:

    IMG_20200519_204818.jpg.929aff100c1d9b7680d20e1408977da0.jpg

As you can see he's changed a lot from my earlier posts and blog post and he's looking pretty mean! Still a far cry from being finished but he's definitely one of my faves.

    Steam tank:

    IMG_20200519_204829.jpg.6ff62e2740234f857becddf80bb28376.jpg

My banshee possessed steamtank walker. This will be the basic conversion for any regular steamtanks I do, I have a converted mortis engine pirate ship steamtank thing for my commander one though. Little bit of a disconnect between those models for sure but this is mostly a 'for fun' project so it's not too big a deal if they don't look that similar.

    Kharibdyss:

    IMG_20200519_204837.jpg.c9e225a53bab2973273d8be78e4b61ba.jpg

He's pretty and you can't not have a sea monster if you're doing pirates. Probably not a good unit but once again... Super pretty.

I'm also currently wondering whether I could make a stardrake work so I can stick a vampire on top of it and finally have a big meanie dragon. But the answer to will it work is probably not if I go greywater (and is it really fun undead pirates without having enough points for artillery?) I'm also planning to make some pistol wielding spectral Siren shadow warriors as my next conversion unit so that will be fun.

Just generally looking for some fun melee units to compliment my beasties and handgunners, I'm not too worried about being competitive as like I said, mostly a for fun project.

  16. I don't paint as much as I'd like to but I absolutely love using my contrast paints. They make it more enjoyable for me and I love the bright popping colours you get with wraithbone. Though I have found grey seer is great for models I want to be darker in tone.

It has its own strengths and drawbacks like any technique but I am happy to say it works super well for me being non time consuming, enjoyably vibrant and fun for me to paint with. It's definitely an each to their own sort of thing (like any painting technique)

  17. I've been slowly grinding through painting my pastel blue 40k wych cult and making silly zombie pirate conversions for my recent cities project. Unfortunately xbox MMO's have been stealing my time a lot recently so I've not worked on them as much as I should whoops! But I did get to have my first game with the cities. My vampire general on griffon did a lot of killing (and a lot of whiffing) whereas my zombie handgunners did very little beside finishing the last couple of wounds off arkhan the black. Teach that guy to be a skeleton and not a zombie!

Hoping to get some more pics up on my blog soon now that I've sprayed some bits up for painting and have added a cannon onto an old pirate ship mortis engine to make it a steam tank. Just needs zombie crew ;)

I'm very glad to see that ramshackle pirate ship too, it looks amazing and it's nice to see other embracing the pirate theme. Arrr!!

I think that article needs updating - the Hysh Aelves are confirmed now and Slaanesh has a formal army now, though I'd agree that Slaanesh is very due for a "mortal followers" addon to the army to be released in bits or en-mass at "some point" . Plus there's at least two forces "missing." One is the Skaven using Airships, which I think got a Clan name mentioned. Another is the "undersea" Sylvaneth who made use of nyads, seaserpents and mermaids - they feature in one of the Inferno collected short stories.

    Mermaids you say?

Well now I want that faction...

  19. So progress is going slow but steady for greywaters most rotten of rogues with 20 handgunners now finished and other bits coming along. I'm still debating different avenues to try out especially since it seems converting my big ship monster into a hurricanum and not steam tank will be easier and cheaper with my bits I own... (my slightly smaller big ship mortis engine however may still become a steamtank because honestly what else will I use it as?). I'm wondering however If any of the start collecting's may be worth my while especially the greywater one, it would give me an engineer (cogsmith) gyrocopter and the 10 irondrakes may be my best shout with it and I can zombify them all up, then I have a warden king though dunno if he's worth converting into something else. I presume these are all useful units to add in? Or are the irondrakes / ironbreakers just generally worse than the freeguilders usually?

I am also going to see how many pistols I have left after my pistolier conversions so I can potentially make some sword and pistol shadow warrior zombies. Because bows are for losers who don't have dangerous gunpowder.

After GHB2019 points changes you don't really need much else tbh.  Some ideas:

Option 1 [Most expensive]: Grab 20 more Elves to run a blob of 30 Slaughter elves and a 2nd small group of 10 Slaughter Elves, and 2 packs of Harpies to field a Slaughter Troupe. You will likely never field Morathi in this list due to points limits.

Option 2 [Cheaper]: Ignore battalions and grab 2 packs of Blood Sisters so you can run the discounted max squad of 20. Bloodwrack will need to be general.

Option 3 [Cheapest]: Buy 1 pack of Khinerai and use them as a deep strike source to patch up your immobility.  Least competitive but most flexible option, and probably the wisest of the 3 as it can let you transition into option 1.

Thanks for the quick response! Loading up on sisters of slaughter and some harpies sounds pretty fun though not being able to really field morathi is a bit of a shame (I do really like her model)

However I do like the idea of utilising SoS more than witch aelves for now but do you recommend I keep the whip & buckler for the 30 man unit or do some changes on 10 of the prebuilt and go with knife and whips on the big blob?

  21. So I'm looking at getting back into my daughters of khaine as I really enjoyed their glass cannon high damage playstyle but never really properly finished my project of them. So I'm wondering what my best options might be with what I currently have and expanding on it (ideally keeping costs down for now but it's also good to consider what to aim for in the future)

    My current collection is:

    -Morathi
-1 Blood Cauldron with slaughter queen
    -1 Bloodwrack Shrine
    -2x Foot hags
    -1x bloodwrack medusa
-2x Avatar of khaine on foot
-20x Sister of slaughter with bucklers & whips
-10x which aelves with double knife
    -10x Blood sisters

Any suggestions on where to take this? I mostly play a mix of casual to casual-competitive but I have plenty of 'for fun' armies so it would be quite nice to run this one with a bit of teeth to it.
