  1. So, if I read correct and unmounted Terrorgeist and Zombie Dragon are the same...would you ever really run a Zombie Dragon over a Terrorgeist?

The Dragon starts with more claw attacks and has a more reliable breath weapon, but the potential healing and gaping maw seems...so much better. And if you actually focus on reducing bravery, the breath weapon evem starts to favor the Terrorgeist!

It is sad, as running a bunch of Zombie Dragons was my draw here, though for narrative purposes. I can fake it, and will play what is more fun and successful anyways, but sad the dragon looks meh.

For mounted as well, the dragon holds out a LITTLE better due to a "better" spell but that is not cut and dry. Summoning Courtier vs. Summom Knights seems to depend on the list and scenario, so that's a wash, I supppose?

....so close. Here's to hoping they change the command ability name? lol Ok, so I guess that's on the "I am being dumb" side. Oh well.

Still works I guess with a group of Archreagents, which still seem super strong... Oh well, we shall see.

@flamingwalnut dude, you really should have read the old tome and FAQ for FEC

Did I miss something else? I mean, I skinmed through the tome and kept relatively up to date with FAQs...what is this in reference to?

  3. Well, color me stoked. I always loved FEC since I read their lore. My last Death project fell flat due to lack lustet Blood Knights conversions. But my lore I had brewing could fit FEC perfectly.

One thing I wanted to say....am I just dumb or is everyone misreading the throne.

One, it is keyworded so all the people thinking the mounted Ghoul kings can't use it are missing that.

Two, it has no limitations on the number of dudes using it.

So, I am thinking 4 Kings on Dragons and an Arch Reagent all cuddled around the throne turn 1. Summom a new freakin' army and then dive bomb away. Bam. 5 free command points and nearly 500 points of free dudes. Seeeeems good. Given I planned a Dragon heavy death from the start, this sounds awesome. (Good will depend on testing, but it is at least promising. lol

After that, a few general thoughts.

Couriers: The converter in me loves the opportunity to do unique heroes! I am getting kinda sick of all the stock heroes released these days, everyone's armies look so similar.

But I understand. You should always have a stock option that is easy and clean. Converting should be an open possibility.

I did have a thought on a fix. What if Couriers become unit upgrades? So, you build the box normally and have the buffs baked into the unit. Would NOT help unit variety and they'd have to nerf courtier abilities as they'd be near unkillable. lol

Or not. Anyways, eager to get the book. So scared for my current painting projects, BUT I will get them done!

  4. There is an old metal acolyte in the Skryre picture. So that answers that, they are just going with what they have... Kind of a shame, but with a good solid book I'll at least feel safer converting Skaven.

I am excited for Skaven. Moulder having a keyworded hero makes me hope they found way to make more hero options for them. Their allegiance is solid, not crazy, but that's fine. Sad no full Eshin previews, but man does the book seem overflowing, love it.

While I was already stoked to read the lore for the Gitz, I am even MORE stoked to see if there is any solid references to anything duardin. I know a skyport was overrun by Grots, but any other stories that rekindles the old Dwarf v. Greenskin rivalry will be a fun read.

    I've tried something similar.

On three places of Arcane Power it is very strong. Once you put your heroes on the objectives, you are very difficult to remove. Even though you lack bodies. But as you lack bodies, you can't do anything on the other scenarios... On friendly games, it can be fun from time to time. But competitively it is not viable.

The limitation of the gnarlroot by putting mandatory TLA, branchwych and Tree-revs is kind of frustrating as you could bring in enough bodies with the removal of the TLA only.

Morathi by herself is still good: Arnzipal Black horror is very nice to remove those 5Wounds heroes with some luck (specially on T1 as you double the range). And the shooting in snake mode can allow some strong possibilities. But there are better Order Wizards to get :o

Plus, Morathi doesn't get to be healed.

But it is still fun to play though!

All fair points. I was sure it wasn't going to be sweeping tables, but hey. The idea is cool and I really love the What If thought puzzle to it all. Curious how casual it can really get, though as both the big ladies can be a serious pain.

  7. Hello there, Sylvaneth players! I have a query for you.

So, while I don't play Sylvaneth, I have been intrigued by them. And what I do love about the Sylvaneth is how little options in each of the Wargrove mega battalions can create crazy lists. I stumbled onto one idea for such a list, and I hope it hasn't been talked to death in this thread, but I wanted to share it and get your thoughts. I am sure it is inefficient, super slanted and gimmicky, but if this at all works, it would at least look awesome. Also, I had a hilarious idea for the story behind it.

Here is what I came up with.

    Good Cop, Bad Cop

    Allegiance: Sylvaneth

    LEADERS
    Alarielle the Everqueen (600)
    Treelord Ancient (300)
    Branchwych (80)
    Branchwraith (80)
Morathi High Oracle of Khaine (480)

    UNITS
    5 x Tree-Revenants (80)
    5 x Tree-Revenants (80)
    5 x Spite-Revenants (70)

    BATTALIONS
    Household (100)
    Gnarlroot Wargrove (130)

    TOTAL: 2000/2000

    EXTRA COMMAND POINTS: 2

The idea of having two of the most powerful "Aelven" figures in the game, tag teaming together without watering down the power of the Sylvaneth just sounds fun. I wish I had more room for Endless spells given ALLL of the wizards, but I was so close to points cap with just the minimum and the Branchwraith summoning bodies seems much more useful. I kinda want to proxy it up and try it, just to see if it has ANY actual teeth.

For strategy, the two big girls have to do the heavy lifting, and without her own spell lore, Morathi pretty much just goes Snake mode ASAP. Should do very well in certain situations, at the very least. Thoughts?

I am still confused about Firestorm army building rules regarding battlelines.

I have a Phoenix Temple army.  It uses Great alliance abilities since it doesnt have it own.  Lets say i wanna build a hallowheart army and mix in Order Draconis.

Can  i use Phoenix Guard or Dragon Blades as Battlelines? Or the BL must be from Order battlelines?

They really should put out a guide for it officially and have it in the FAQ section or something.

From my understanding, this works IF you keep a majority of one faction to still qualify for that faction's battleline. So, 80% Phoenix Temple, 20% Ordsr Draconis, get Battleline Phoenix Guard and toss Hallowheart on top, should be all good. Go over that ally limit either way and you need generic battleline.

  9. My vague 2018 resolution to "Paint what I have" failed miserably. I mean, I got SOME of it painted, but nothing is completed.

    THAT WILL CHANGE!

I am actually organizing a "New Year, New Army" at my local shop. It will be a community effort to basically scream "PAINT YOUR MINIS!" from the rooftops. There will be events every month to mark the milestones. If things go well, everyone should have a 2,000 point army, painted to a tabletop standard.

I should end up with a painted Sacrosanct Stormcast army, and hopefully a good chunk of my 40k Orks painted. Any other random models I can snag to paint will be cool. From there, it's all about keeping the momentum going still with narrative events and community building things.

Oh sorry I misunderstood. Yes I’m sure they will at some point down the road. But there’s a sense from the community that it’s obviously a good thing for GW if they do it now now now and it’s a missed opportunity for free money that they’re losing with every second they don’t release battletomes to make all the Old World factions playable . I thought that’s what you meant sorry.

I can certainly see it, and I do think that the sooner they put tomes for existing armies the better. TECHNICALLY, every moment could be a new customer deciding to NOT buy into an army due to it being supported.

But given how much they have to cover, in both AoS and 40k, even with their crazy fast release schedule, it will take a bit. But one or two every year? Would not be shocked.

  11. 9 minutes ago, Nos said:

It’s not just about initial cost it’s about return of investment and profit. The profit and return of investment is going to be very low on the things you say.

Bottom line- there’s a reason they’re not doing these things that seem obvious to the community.  If a simple cheap idea was going to make them a lot of money they’d obviously  do that. The fact they haven’t suggests that it’s not as simple or straight forward as people are saying it is.  The company with all the information  about purchasing habits and excess stock has decided not to do it. There will be a reason behind it other than just because they haven’t realised something obvious.

    ???

As far as I see they have 4 books down that are exactly like this (Bonesplittas, Beastclaw, BoS, LoN) and several AoS armies that were built off of old stock that had models added to it. (Ironjaws, Sylvaneth, DoK, etc.) Can't imagine them stopping either trend.

I may be coming off wrong; I have no illusions that they will just pour out every suggested Battletome in the next year. It does make sense to spread things out, they have plenty of material and time. I was only suggesting that saying doing battletomes for older armies isn't a silly thing that will never come. It already has and it is reasonable to expect more at SOME point.

They know what they’re doing better than anyone. They’re making money hand over fist.

It’s not a simple equation of if this, then that. Everything takes time and money. Money and time used to produce old world rosters into new Battletomes is money and time not being used on Stormcast, Slaanesh, new Aelves , Mortal Realm stuff basically, i.e the stuff that is unique and which strengthens the Mortal Realms IP. And as this rumour board proves, stretching out all that exciting new stuff over a long period and feeding just enough tid bits and scant releases to keep hope for its imminent release permanent locks in far more customers over time than the big immediate release you’re suggesting they need to capitalise on.

Look, bottom line, Old World stuff wasn’t selling. They’re not going to take resources away from what is making them rich in order to serve people’s nostalgia and impatience.  The idea in particular that more people will buy models if they can use their existing ones is very odd. They might buy a few new models to supplement things sure. But not nearly as many models as they will if they have to play a whole new army. GW only cares about AOS as a game in as much as it sells their products. Given that it would be backwards of them to give more of that game and facilitating people use their existing stuff with only a fraction of the profit they would get if someone decided to buy a new army instead.

Meantime they’re using the existing New Hotness to sell whole armies to the most enthusiastic  and making sure  that the rest of the majority feel *something big* is imminent with releases like Wrath and Rapture to keep them involved in the License and it’s associated products. It’s not. But it will keep people engaged until GW has gotten the most out of its existing range at which point far more people will be around to buy the new New Hotness because they have been mesmerised by Hype. And at exactly the same time Slaanesh finally does get a big reveal there will be hints of something again (Malerion, Ruination Chamber etc), something that’s surely only around the corner....

I agree that the general idea of focusing on new stuff is more profitable. BUT, time and money ARE key and making just a battletome for older armies costs a LOT less than an entire new army. AND, it will make players who would never have even looked at those old factions suddenly take interest, so they may not sell new models to the old players (but they might still pick up some more anyways, to flesh out their now supported army) but people starting that army will buy a lot. Just look at Legions of Nagash and Beasts of Chaos. I would bet they made their money back and more by selling their battletomes and old stock that was sitting around. And I bet they can churn out a half dozen of those books in the time it takes to make 1 Idoneth Deepkin.

"equipped with" and "armed with" are essentially the same thing. What GW expects to be used as rules and to be used as useless extra words is hardly clear.

"A unit of Kairic Acolytes has 10 or more models. Each unit fights with a variety of weapons; some of the Acolytes are armed with a single Cursed Blade while others carry Paired Cursed Blades. Some instead carry a Cursed Blade and an Arcanite Shield. Three in every ten models in the unit can be armed with double-handed Cursed Glaives."

When wielding the glaives, where does it say that we can also have a shield and/or not replace the shield? The way it's written, it implies that any single acolyte can be armed with a single blade, paired blades, a blade and shield, or a glaive. The idea that the glaive can be used with a shield is quite a leap without the support of the models' design and the pictures.

I'm not saying that you're wrong or that I disagree, I just don't understand how anyone would come to that conclusion based on the wording of the text. (not arguing, just voicing my discontent).

Nah, you look to be right. I thought it was worded different, like you add the shield on later. A lot of units have the "Armed with X, Y, or Z. Some may take a shield." It appears these guys are not. My bad.

Though, wording like double handed do still seem to mean nothing, and cause nothing but confusion and rules intention arguments. Like with thr Duardin Warriors I mentioned ealier.

  14. 6 minutes ago, Kharneth said:

You're both missing an important detail, in my opinion 😝. Are the glaives wieldable with a shield as the models and pictures indicate, or does the phrase "double-handed" mean to say that the glaive cannot be used with a shield?

I agree it makes next to no difference.

Double handed means nothing. You need to look for things like "equipped with X OR Y..." The Dispossesed duardin warriors have the same deal, 2 handed weapons AND shields.

The list looks fun to play with. The things I would have done differently: give the LoC Mark of the Conjurer for double fate points, get rid of the screamers, and use the cogs for the LOC as well.
If you are more on a budget, deamons is not the way to go. The battle box is a great value for money with Tzaangor on Disc  and the shaman. Plus more Acolites and Tzaangor.
Playing Mortals is less costly, you would just need a start collecting deamons and a couple of blue horrors boxes for the summoning.

Sadly, the battlebox is sold out online and I try to buy only from my LGS, so that deal has sailed. Also, while I love Discs of Tzeentch, Tzaangors just don't do it for me. They're not BAD, just not super exciting. Not quite sure why...

Pity, the Start Collecting Box seems like such a great deal... Even with the awkward Horror splitting question. And Burning Chariots look cool. Oh well, guess we'll see.

  16. Hello everyone! Long time lurker.

I borrowed a friend's army for a tournament this past weekend. While I only went 1 - 2, I was a good dice roll away from going 2 - 1. I had fun, it was nice, and Tzeentch is really tempting for my next army project...barring some other problems. More on that in a sec.

    Here is my list.

Allegiance: Tzeentch - Mortal Realm: Chamon

    LEADERS
    Lord Of Change (380)
    General
    Command Trait : Incorporeal Form
    Artefact : Argent Armour
Lore of Change : Tzeentch's Firestorm
Gaunt Summoner and Chaos Familiars (180)
Lore of Change : Bolt of Tzeentch
    Herald Of Tzeentch (140)
    Staff of Change
Lore of Change : Fold Reality
    Magister (140)
Lore of Fate : Glimpse the Future
    Daemon Prince Of Tzeentch (160)
Lore of Change : Arcane Transformation

    UNITS
    20 x Tzaangors (360)
    10 x Kairic Acolytes (80)
    10 x Kairic Acolytes (80)
    10 x Pink Horrors Of Tzeentch (200)

Lore of Change : Fold Reality
    3 x Screamers Of Tzeentch (100)

    ENDLESS SPELLS
    Balewind Vortex (40)
    Aethervoid Pendulum (40)
    Geminids of Uhl-Gysh (40)
    Umbral Spellportal (60)

First game was against Nurgle. Starstrike. Game went pretty well. Gaunt Summoner had very few decent targets due to a lot of elite units with Mortal Wound saves. I was able to gum up the board well enough, locked a few things in combat, and blast at least a few things off the board. But overall, not a lot died (on his side...). BUT, I managed to sneak a few points on objectives. Was literally one good Tzeentch's Firestorm from wiping all the objectives and claiming enough points for victory. I have a feeling I will come to hate Nurgle (as I already do. Love hate...)

Second game was against Slaves to Darkness. Total Conquest. This was a pretty straight forward game. He had 2 big death star units, but only one had mortal wound saves, and neither had THAT much protection. I wiped out his big block of knights in turn one, and tore open his Chosen over the next 2 turns. He conceded and I lost little overall.

Third game was against Seraphon. Battle for the Pass. Wow this was rough. He had Kroak + Balewind and Cogs for CRAZY summoning. That, and a Knight Incantor slowed down my Magic hard. To top it off, the Shadowstrike Starhost snagged objectives early and that horrible retreat trick with Skinks made them a PAIN to reclaim. Even still, due to some crazy rolls and a few shenanigans, I felt like I had a chance. Sadly, it did not work out.

    So, overall thoughts:
    Lord of Change is fun.
Summoning is a nice bonus, but not to be relied on.
    Magic is fun.
I wish I could have experimented with other things. I had no Enlightened/Skyfires, and from this forum, I hear all the other demon stuff is kinda meh...

Now, the problems: I am on a bit of a budget. Horrors are fun and nice, but having to buy 2 boxes of Blue and Brimstone horrors at LEAST for splitting makes them a horrible budget cost. I considered scratch build blues/brims, or even building Pink Horrors in some weird detachable way, so that they ACTUALLY split and attach to new bases to form blues/brims. But that sounds super complex and time consuming.

So, thoughts on the list? Tips on starting Tzeentch cheap? Tips for fun conversions and other unique strategies/units that could spice things up in the long term? Also, are Burning Chariots, Heralds on Chariots, Screamers, and Flamers really that bad? :(

  17. @Spears Sadly, yes, if you go Grand Alliance Order, which was their design. Hammerhal is the only box with pure battleline. You could keep adding Scourge Privateers till you are able to use their (non-existant) allegiance...

@Hannibal Hallowheart and Hammerhal. Hallowheart is the anti-magic one, Hammerhal is the generic leadership buff one.

Do you have any advise for a Anvilguard army with dwarfs+dark elves or dwarfs+dark elves+SCE.

i made some lists but I am not pleased so far.

Well, since Anvilguard doesn't give you KO or Fyreslayers, so no Ships or Runesmiter Tunneling for speed, which Anvilguard does like. BUT, the classic duardin (Dispossessed) give you is a nice anvil. So, I would take a big block or three of Duardin (Warriors for cheap, Ironbreakers for tough, or Hammerers for hitting power) and just have them hold the back end/slowly advance forward. Then use your Dark Elves to advance quickly up the flanks and pincer the enemy against your anvil, allowing you to abuse Implacable March. So, units like Drakespawn Knights/Chariot, Dreadlord on Black Dragon, Dark Riders, or Executioners. Stormcast can fill in literally any roll, so season to taste with whatever; ranged would be the best thing they can offer, really, or magic if you don't like Sorceresses. Some Longstrike Crossbows, Judicators, Celestar Balistas and Knight Incantors are really solid.

So I've been tossing around the idea of a 'Grand Alliance: Dwarf' army for a while, and I figured I'd ask here, if anywhere, about which Free City rules work best?

The idea is that I'd only use models from Dispossessed, Ironweld, Fyreslayers and Kharadron. With a possible addition of Stormcast for magic support.

The issue therein is that I don't think Fyreslayers are included in many of the free cities, which is a bother. At the end of the day I *could* just drop Fyreslayers entirely, though. Food for thought.

    What do you guys think?

The idea is sound and would be really cool. I've had a similar thought as I pondered my need for more Dwarf in my life. Sadly, yes, you are kind of in a tough spot for a city that includes everything. Hammerhal is your only bet and...it is so meh. So, you either day whatever just build Hammerhal and play the models you want, or focus on either what I call Tech or Classic. Tech (Tempest's Eye) allows you to build a big air force lots of fire power. Classic (Hallowheart) lets you take just big piles of stubborn stunties. Greywater Fastness is also possible as a pure "Old School Only" dwarf list focused on actual artillery.

My suggestion? Make a list of all the units you REALLY want, in order from most wanted to least wanted. Start building an army list with that list and see if any sub-faction takes more of a focus than others, that should help guide you to a decision.

    Allegiance: Greywater Fastness
Celestial Hurricanum With Celestial Battlemage (380)

I have a question regarding the clan banners that most Dispossessed infantry can take. It says "If you fail a battleshock test for a unit that has any standard bearers, halve the number of models that flee (rounding up)." Does this mean if I have a dwarf unit that would potentially lose 1 model to battleshock that I reduce it by 0.5 and round back up to 1, meaning the 1 model doesn't flee?

If you round up and end up at 1, then 1 model flees. You can never get below 1 with rounding up.

  22. The Luminark and Archmage are a great combo, if you add one I'd keep the Archmage. But really, I am mostly just iffy on the number of boots on the ground that will screen you. As well, making sure everyone is packed around the Hurricanum can make LoS awkward. But it could be awesome. Try a game with it, would be curious how well it does in practice.

    Hi!

Is it possible to play a order draconis army  with dragon blades as battleline in an hallowheart allegiance or do I need to take generic battleline for that?

There has been a lot of confusion over this, but yes, you should be able to. The way it works is this: When building an army, you use an allegiance to build your list, and then pick an allegiance ability to use. So, being Order Draconis for list building will allow for Dragon Blade battleline (assuming you stick within allies rules, as you are keeping to a more specific faction. Get too many allies or the wrong allies, and you'd lose Dragon Blade battleline just like any other list)

Then when picking the allegiance ability to use, you only have access to Order Grand Alliance. IF you ever use Order Grand Alliance, you can look to see if you qualify for any Firestorm allegiances. If you have only taken the factions listed in the desired Firestorm allegiance, which Order Draconis will work for Hallowheart. So, assuming all before it has been followed and works, you are good to go, and have a Order Draconis Army with additional rules of Hallowheart.

Another thing to remember, if you CAN take a more specific allegiance (like Stormcast Eternal, Sylvaneth, etc.) you MUST take that, which invalidates all Firestorm stuff. Honestly, all of this is awfully complicated, I can't wait for a Free Cities battletome.

Can the free cities rules still be used in matched play? Is it tournament legal?

Some tournaments may ban them, but they are still intended and legal for Matched Play. And honestly, they should be perfectly fine, none of them are really that broken in practice. When in doubt, though, as the Tournament Organizer before the event.
