  1. Changes to Path to Glory are disappointing for me but not unexpected. Quests, territories and base building with little impact on the rules when playing is what I love about the 3rd edition system. More developed unit progression was what the community was asking for though so I guess you can’t blame Games Workshop for going down this route. I think I’ll just keep using the rules from 3rd edition.

    Anyone else find this curious?

‘…Path to Glory is returning to its roots in the Core Book with Path to Glory: Ascension

Why did they use the words ‘in the Core Book’? Why isn’t it just called ‘Path to Glory?’

Is that a hint of a full Path to Glory expansion book coming later?

  2. Path to Glory was my favourite game mode in 3rd Edition but it's in need of a big clean up. The presentation was clunky and the expansion content was undisciplined. Still, I LOVED founding my own city, securing trade routes, constructing barracks and receiving additional units. I Hope the exploration and base building aspects of it is retained in some way, that was my favourite part. Looking forward to the reveals.

I'm sure this system will work better in the smaller format, but it's a bit of a bummer that battle tactics (the only real miss of 4th edition so far) were improved - or at least changed - only for Spearhead.

I'm a real laggard when it comes to battle tactics. Maybe Spearhead will do me good and force me to give them a try! 😄

  4. Yes, yes and yes! I am so excited for Spearhead! For me, this is THE part of 4th edition I am most excited about. Why? I am hopelessly time poor and most of my gaming group have moved on as they don’t have the time anymore. I can play about at most about three or four games of Age of Sigmar a year. No way most of my buddies will even prepare an up to date army list before they arrive. This will be perfect.

I can’t justify starting full Kharadron or Idoneth armies but I could do a Spearheads 😃! Also, retail staff have been crying out for something like this for years. I think it will do a lot of good bringing new people into the hobby.

If Spearhead isn’t for you that’s fine. Top players will probably look elsewhere. But I am supra-excited for it! (That’s a whole other level beyond super).😃

  5. Battle Tactics are for matched play. I can see how they help ensure the most technically proficient player wins and why they are popular with the designers right now. I’ve been avoiding them as I see them as an unnecessary complication. Maybe one day, I’ll force myself to give them a try.

  6. Not so much a secret but an anecdote. I attacked my brother’s Knight-Questor with a Grot Scuttling with additional hand weapons in a game of Warhammer Quest Silver Tower a few years ago. I rolled four dice for my attack and scored four sixes! Enough to take him down in one go! Take that Stormcast! My brother calmly rolled four dice for his saving throw… another four sixes! ‘Gulp!’ went the scuttling before being absolutely pulverised by the Questor.

The probability of a grot scuttling experiencing such highs and lows in one attack sequence is 1 in 1 679 616. Poor little dude! 😄

  7. Yeah, decision making paralysis is certainly a thing. I personally try and pick a theme and direct all my efforts to that. I have a goal that once I start painting, I have to see it through before I can butterfly on to something else. I also maintain a project queue to try and help me stick with my decisions. I also try and forget about why I am painting the model in front of me and focus on finding the joy in each paint job.

  8. I might have mentioned this but my trick is that I have to paint at least 40 minutes per week. That way I am always making progress but never feel bad or burnt out if I can’t manage more than that. I am stupidly busy with work and family but I find the time spent painting calms me and I really enjoy it.

  9. I really enjoyed the Blood Angels series and Blacktalon was awesome. I really enjoyed the Age of Sigmar episodes of Hammer and Bolter too. Especially the Callis and Toll one. Masterclass has been great, picked some great painting tips off it. Vault has helped me get some very specific White Dwarf stuff that I wanted  to access. Everything else hasn’t really interested me that much. Don't really feel the need to be subscribed for longer than a few weeks a year.

  10. That Reclusian is the best Stormcast model to date. Absolutely, phenomenal. The expression on the face mask is sublime, so haunting and evocative. I can see John Blanche's influence, especially in the beautiful gorget. The different textures in the armour grounds the model and provides great visual interest. The painting on this model is also incredible. Love the true metallic metal and the choice of two armour tones. Memorian compainion is inspired. I've always felt Stormcast look best in the presence of mortal humans to demonstrate their scale.

Congratulations to the designer and painter on their amazing work.

  11. I’m fine with this. I’ve been reading the tactical problems in White Dwarf. The solutions are just ingenious to me. Makes me realise how deep the game is. I don’t think we need that complexity. It takes me around three months to paint a unit. I don’t want to tear up my hard work to chase the flavour of the month.

Moreover, I’ve been counting my greatswords, halberdiers and sword and shield models as Steelhelms and I didn’t even think maybe I’d lost something.

  12. Back when the Ogre Kingdoms were released, Games Workshop were talking about a new movie industry style design system that they had used for the Ogres. They talked about how they were trying to create something that was uniquely Warhammer. Both artistic and intellectual property reasons were subsequently mentioned as reasons for this approach.

Our beloved Beastmen were from an earlier time when GW didn’t have to worry about imitators. Goat legged creatures were being painted by Hieronymus Bosch. They stayed true to their original imagery that resonated so well with our collective consciousness. They never had that re-imaging to make them uniquely Warhammer. That’s why when I heard the rumours, I sadly believed them instantly.

You know what would have been great, if they been kept in. Given the full design team treatment, now that would have been something really special.

  13. Not a good day today. My brother collected two armies, Bretonnia and Beastmen. He was on the phone last week trying to give away his miniature collection. Not angry, just done.

Hard to see the sense in it. At least these armies had a good run. My son’s Sacrosanct however…

To try and be positive, I have been able to find a place for all my Empire miniatures in my Cities army. They are looking fantastic and have never had better rules. Perhaps Bonesplitterz and the retiring Stormcast can be counted as other troops in their ranges?

Have thoughts on why Beastmen are leaving us but that might be for another day.

  14. Great question! And tricky to answer too. I have grown fond of the Stormcast and am planning on adding a few units to my Cities army. Stormcast are designed to be perfect for starters sets. I could see others though: Kharadron Overlords, Warriors, Sylvaneth could all work really well as starter set factions.

    Il’ll vote no. 😁
