It would be a phenomenal act of stupidity to squat these factions when beasts of chaos and LoN have proven how successful older stock can be when given some new rules.

I agree, the classic aelf factions only need a decent battletome and maybe a few endless spells and they would sell like hot cakes. Squatting them would be a big waste of potential and money. There are many people, myself included, who are waiting to see what GW will do with the aelfs before buying them.

  2. Could be funny if Malus came back but fused with Tz'arkan, basically becoming a new daemon character for Chaos. And when people bring up the made-up story about Malekith fusing with his dragon, we could correct them and say "no no no, you got it wrong: it was actually MALUS who fused with his DEMON." :D

I’m all for ditching the old world characters...but only after they bring back Malus Darkblade!

While I liked Malus Darkblade, it seems his soul has been annihilated by Tz'arkan, the demon within him, during the End Times

So no soul = no coming back?

So, can someone explains to me why the Ironweld arsenal got grouped with Free People and not Dispossessed? :(

Hypothesis: maybe because the Dispossessed is a faction of very traditionalist duardins who are very suspicious of modern weapons? Things such as organ gun and gyrocopter are considered as too 'unorthodox' while thunderers pistols and rifles constitute the limit of what they can accept?

Maybe the Ironweld duardins are even considered as brazen youngsters by the Dispossessed duardins. And in the same way, perhaps the Dispossessed see the Fyreslayers duardins as a bunch of weirdos, and the Kharadron duardins as flying freaks. And perhaps the Ironweld, Fyreslayers and Kharadron duardin see the Dispossessed as a bunch of old-fashioned grumblers who cannot get over the loss of their great ancient empire even after several centuries. But fortunately, all duardins can put their differences aside when it's time to smash grot heads and to drink beer.

I want to believe in a unified high elf battletome!

Personally I hope GW won't reunify the aelves, or at least that they won't re-do them the way they were in WHFB (high elves/dark elves/wood elves). I was getting tired of the classic warhammer elves and I like the way they shook those armies and made new sub-factions out of them.

I also prefer when my dark elves are a little less dark (especially the scourge privateers): I prefer them as morally dubious characters instead of the outright psychopaths and sadistic murderers they were in the World-that-was. Therefore I really hope that the Daughters of Khaine will be the closest faction to the original druchiis and that the other "dark elf" factions (privateers, shadowblade, serpentis) will become a bit lighter (or "grayer" if you will) compared to their previous incarnations.
The same goes for the high elves: I hope they will be updated to be a little less noble and haughty than they were in WHFB with their spotless white robes.

All in all, I don't mind a unified aelf battletome, as long as GW get innovative and don't write them to be the exact same type of elves as they were before. For example, a battletome that would mix a bit of both dark elves and high elves (like Order Draconix + Order Serpentis being various knighthood orders working in the same army) would be cooler in my opinion.

    PS: sorry, I went a bit off-topic.

The Elf is peculiar, a corsair, but not a dark one.

Considering "Heart of Winter" is written by Nick Horth, I wonder if the corsair could be Arika Zenthe from "City of Secrets". Although she doesn't wear a sea dragon cloak, her blades look pretty much like those of the Scourge Privateers.

Bigger picture of the aelf corsair, because why not:

Man I really hope GW will update the Scourge Privateers one day, they have the potential to be my favorite faction.

  7. Did anybody mention this? I don't think I saw it in this thread..

Likewise, your new games are going to need some terrain – and the new double-height Azyrite Ruins should be perfect for recreating the ruined cities of the Age of Myth. Like their shorter counterparts, these can be built without glue – so even if you’re new, you’ll be able to put together thematic battlefields with ease – no more bold excursions to the mysterious “realm of the kitchen table with some books on”. Save it from Nagash ?

But aren't the souls of the chaos warriors automatically picked up by their gods? I thought Nagash couldn't claim their souls? Was I wrong?

Edit: I guess it doesn't matter who Sigmar is stealing this soul from. Nagash, Chaos... all the same. As long it ends up in Azyrheim to be purified, redeemed and reforged.

How do people actually play narrative, without points it would be just the guy with the biggest wallet dominates everyone else, even more then in matched played? Or better yet how do they start it, if someone starts narrative this means other people have to had already been playing it, this means they are late to the arms race and would be facing people who have 3-4 times the size of collections. They would have to be constanlly be buying more and more stuff to keep up with others, while in matched played they just have to have one good 2000pts army and be done with buying stuff.

People who are going to have an Open/Narrative Play game usually discuss about how they are going to play, the size and the composition of their armies, the scenario and the objectives of the game, which special rules they will use, etc. It's just that simple. It's all about discussing with your fellow player before starting the game and decide how you're gonna play it.

Open Play is basically a sandbox where you do whatever you want. You have a ton of options at your disposal: you can build your army the way you want and you can pick any special rule from any game mode (allegiance abilities, time of war, open play cards, rules of 1, etc.). With so many options, you need to decide how you're gonna play it and thus you will need to discuss about the settings of the game with your partner. Remember: AoS is not some kid's game where the one who has the biggest collection (or the rarest card) wins by default; it's a game played by people who want to have a fun time.

As to how to play without points, when you're familiar with the game, you can easily build approximately equivalent armies with your opponent without having to rely on points, simply by talking about what minis you are going to play with.
And by the way, the game balance brought by the point system is also an approximate balance. Sure it's a very very useful guideline for quick games with people we don't know, or for tournaments. But it's not a perfect system and there's no way it could be perfect (if we actually wanted a perfectly balanced game we would be playing chess or checkers). That's why playing with or without points doesn't really make a big difference as long as you and your opponent are on the same page. And for that, the key is communication.

My main dissapointment was the sorceresses. They all get a new ability - Hekarti's blessing - which allows them to slay a friendly model within 3" for +2 to cast but they all get the same spell!! word of pain. Even in the compendium the sorceress on cold one or pegasus got a different spell (though chillwind was a BAD spell at least it was variety!) Now they all have the same spell if they are on foot, riding a cold one, pegasus or black dragon. I was really hoping each Legends army would come with some AoS versions of the WFB spell lores and artifacts + some allegiance abilities but I guess that was asking a bit much.

I noticed that and I don't worry too much about it. I think the Word of Pain was the best spell available to the sorceresses in the 2015 compendium, but only the sorceress on foot could have it. The other spells (from the sorceress on cold one and the one on black dragon) were so-so in my opinion, especially compared to the Magic Bolt. Now remember that this new compendium is meant for Open & Narrative Play, so the rules of 1 don't apply. Therefore a dark elf player can cast several Word of Pain/Magic Bolt per turn.

I know you'd like more variety in the magic spells, but personally I prefer to keep rules simple like they were at the beginning of AoS. So i'm not particularly disappointed with the sorceresses having the same spell. However I am slightly disappointed with the new corsairs warscroll.

In the new compendium, the corsairs have only one melee weapon (dark elf hand weapon) whereas the scourge privateers have 2 melee weapons (vicious blade & wicked cutlass) with different stats. Now I'm all for simpler rules and I approve the fusing of the 2 weapons into one. It makes the dice roll smoothier in the combat phase.
But if you remember well, the corsairs can have 1 melee weapon and a reapeater handbow OR 2 melee weapons. If they choose the first configuration, they can obviously shoot and then fight in combat, which is neat. But what if you choose the 2 melee weapons configuration? Do you get more attacks? An improved To-Hit stat? Nope. You get to re-roll the To-Hit results of 1, which is a little "weak". And to add with that, if you use the command ability of the Black Ark Fleetmater on them, they get to re-roll all failed To-Hit rolls anyway... So as a result the corsairs with a repeater handbow are automatically preferable to those with 2 hand weapons...

So far this is my only disappointment with the new compendium: there is almost no reason (or none I can see at the moment) to take corsairs with 2 hand weapons over corsairs with handow.

Edit: oh and I'm also disappointed that the Black Ark Fleemaster's command ability only works for the combat phase (therefore it doesn't help the corsairs to shoot better). Appart from those 2 problems, I think the Dark Elf compendium really got better compared to the 2015 version.

I'm also interested what is the change between the 2k15 compendium of the DE & the new one - did they really change anything or just re-post same file and call it new?

They did a LOT of changes here and there throughout the warscrolls. Too many for me to list them all. There are a few things that bug me in this new version but overall I think it is better than the 2015 version.

So, I've spotted three rumour engines that can be closed now (the crest on the cavalry, octopus scribe's scroll and the side of the octopus itself), anyone got more?

The barbed scythe blade on the bottom left corner of this picture was in one of the rumour engines if I'm not mistaken.

And maybe the quivers & arrows on this picture (not sure).

Yeah It has but that's not the arch I mean.

The ruins set has 2 sprues it seems which makes 3 ruins (with a few swappable bits). The battle set looks to have one of these and another sprue with round arches.

Right, I see now. I didn't notice them before.

After further scrutiny, I believe those are not windows but doorways actually. We'll need to see the kit when it'll be available for preorder, but I have the feeling that the doorway can be either open or condemned with bricks. Maybe we can choose to glue a brickwall inside them. Take a look at the condemned doorways on the bottom pieces of this first picture and compare them with the open doorways on this second picture: the pillars are the same.
