  1. Been a while since I checked out the thread due to a bit of a hobby slump with Covid, but jeeze there are some interesting list ideas floating around in here.

I just finished listened to dan brewer as well as bitchparty's updated review of the book and its got me looking at some other options that I hadn't even considered.

I'm glad to hear that there may be a place for Thanquol in the meta, I never quite got the behind the idea of HPA, as any switched on player would knock off a few wounds to drop its bracket and the 2d6 movement was hard for me to get past. 400 points is a lot for thanquol but you get a solid caster, hes relatively tanky, his chaff removable is unbeatable and he is a boss fluff wise and model wise. Looking like i might pull the trigger on this guy.

Im really interested in the gnawbomb type lists too. There seems to be a lot of potential for movement shenanigans and objective grabbing even outside of the hey how ya going here's 6 buffed stormfiends, a deciever and 40 clanrats in your flank, combo.

Being able to bring on 20 gutter runners on a table edge, having teleport options with two skitterleaps, and being able to have 40 clan rats pop up on an objective, seems like it could be a lot of fun but also great for board control. Even the doomwheel seems to fit into a list like this really well.

People are used to the standard meta lists, as has already been mentioned. So I think moving forward with crazy stuff like this could catch people off guard. Can't wait for iso to settle so I can get some games in!

    Hey guys,

Been a while since the skaven had a run out but I have a one day tournament coming up and thought I might dust them off for a run out.

Was thinking of the following list:

    Verminlord Warpseer

    Arch warlock

    Warlock engineer

    Warlock engineer

    20x clan rats

    20x clan rats

    20x clan rats

    6x stormfiend

    3x stormfiends

    Warp lightening cannon

Might swap out an engineer for a couple of endless spells.

Anyone think that this will be ok please?
I just think it will be fun to play.

I don't really see the value in taking 3 engineers, so for starters id drop one (-100). Id also look at dropping the 3 stormfiends simply because unbuffed they are not worth their points and your unit of 6 will be taking the buffs (-260) from here you have some considerations.

WLC is good for sniping with mortal wounds, but is extremely swingy, too much so for my liking and too much so for a competitive setting. This thing is honestly great or a complete waste of points.

If you want to have ranged sniping output, id be looking at taking the WLC out (-180) and replacing it with jezzails. They are less swingy and can still be effective without buffs, meaning you wont NEED to have an engineer with them.

With those changes you have 540 points to play with. 6+ jezzails are very good for sniping. Hellpit abomination can be amazing for horde clearing, although I think people are still trying to work out how reliable it is in this role. Plague monks can add some melee threat even post nerf, just not against high armour armies. Or you can looks at adding more clan rats for extra bodies.

I like the gwendars approach of trying to have 3 threats on the board. It forces the opponent to make hard decisions and means you have more options by not having to rely on one unit and one strategy to get the job done.

Speaking of.. wonder what we'll see. I still really wouldn't mind using Stormvermin but I don't think I'll ever be able to justify it at the cost. There's also that potential for the double-turn to be changed or removed. I only say this due to having the conversation with a local guy the other day when picking up my Fyreslayers... I could see some reasonable changes made but who knows.

I would love for them to do something crazy with the priority roll similar to what they do with warcry where, there are clear benefits for having priority but also for not getting it.

So roll multiple dice and double, triples etc. Could be "cashed in" for abilities or buffs.

As it stands I don't mind the double turn but I get why people don't like it. There is definitely the potential for bad play experiences.

On the topic of tournaments I just signed up for Sydney GT all the way on October! Its in the realm Ghur so we have to bring along a beast. Tossing up between a hellpit abomination or a gargant that has been "skavenised" by clans moulder and skryre.

My gunline got its butt kicked by pink horror blob today. Someone send help.

    What happened?

I've lost a couple against tzeentch but both times in the last turn and both games could have been won had I not made big mistakes.

I think the key to taking down tzeentch changehost is target priority and proper screening.

First game i targeted pinks to take them off an objective instead of ignoring them, taking other objectives and sniping off heroes.

2nd game I didn't screen well enough, but target priority was much better. Unfortunately not screening well enough meant my shooting wasnt as strong turn 1 and I couldn't take down his LoC. I also prioritised flamers so in both games they didnt have a huge impact. They are quite easy to kill and if you screen them from your key targets you can nullify them.

I would say key things ill be taking into my next game against them are:

    1. Making sure I have clanrats deployed to screen out teleporting flamers and deepstriking changeling. Paired with battleshock immunity aura to make sure my chaff doesnt go down in one turn.

    2. Making sure i have enough ranged firepower to snipe off characters ASAP to nullify casting. Jezzails and fiends seemed to work great.

    3. Make sure I don't get locked into fights with horrors but use clanrats to tie them up retreat and charge to get to other objectives.

It's gonna be a tough fight regardless. Tzeentch are top of the meta for good reason.

I’ll be taking part at the esc event in Luxembourg, which is going to take place on the 5th-6th of august.

Tye list I’ll be taking with me  looks like this:

    Allegiance: Skaventide
    LEADERS
    Skallog the Mad (120)
    Warlock Bombardier
    - Artefact : Vial of the Fulminator
    - Lore of Warpvolt Galvanism : More-more-more Warp Power!
    Grey Seer Sniketrikk (240)
    Grey Seer on Screaming Bell
    - General
    - Command Trait : Master of Magic - Lore of Ruin : Death Frenzy
Skaa bloodtail, right claw of clan Mors (100)
    Clawlord
    - Mighty Warlord Command Trait : Savage Overlord
    UNITS
The black furred Gnawers of the deepwarrens (200)
      40 x Clanrats - Rusty Blade
    The red death (280)
    40 x Plague Monks - Foetid Blades
    The Messenger of Doom (160)
    1 x Doomwheel
    The Doomseeker (160)
    1 x Doomwheel
    1 x Doomwheel (160)
    Skalks backstabbering Backstabbers (120)
    20 x Clanrats - Rusty Blade
    The red Guard (450)
    40 x Stormvermin - Halberd & Shield
     TOTAL: 1990/2000
    EXTRA COMMAND POINTS: 0
    WOUNDS: 187
    LEADERS: 3/6 BATTLELINES: 3 (3+) BEHEMOTHS: 4/4 ARTILLERY: 0/4 ARTEFACTS: 1/1 ALLIES: 0/400

This list is cool as hell mate. I love it. So different but actually looks quite good. A lot of wounds and 2 heavy hitters with monks and stormvermin.

The best bit though is those 3 doomwheels. They are either gonna fall flat or really catch people off guard, but what a fun list, other than having to push so many models around.

Such a unique list , cant wait to hear how you go.

So It looks like the next faction are going to get themselves a few more battalions.

Considering that Ironjawz are already a faction with almost the best Battalions given, I really am wondering what’s keeping Gw from giving the skaven some.

Are they in  fear that those white dwarf battalions might be a better option then any in our book?

I really do hope we get some playable battalions. As it stands there really aren't any worth taking for competitive play so we never really have the option to take low drop lists. However, I think skaven are in a pretty good place still, with multiple competitive options. I would just worry that if we do get viable battalions it may tip the balance a bit too much.

That's no reason not to try though and I really hope we get some love in that regard.

It only affects damage, not MW's. So you would just do 2 MW's and not 2 MW's + 1 MW\damage I believe. If Jezzails were worded "MW's in addition to normal damage" then it would work this way.

This totally screwed me today when shooting the LoC. Too many 6s not enough 4s and 5s.

Gnawhole placement. Let's talk-talk about it!
I usually Place on in the middle of my backline, and then two on each board side in a position where they threaten objectives.
What are some good placements and considerations you fine gentlerats have come up with?

I like having two in my deployment so that I can do a switch if i need.

I do like having two further up the board though to put a doomwheel through or to move jezzails up.

  9. Had my game today  against tzeentch and feel like it was both super fun and frustrating.

I only really made one mistake and unfortunately it was in deployment and it probably cost me the game.

I thought I had done a good job at screening everything and had deployed all my value units on the table edge out of flamer range. Unfortunately I left a stupid gap perfect for the changeling to teleport in and charge my 9 jezzails. Seriously, it was a gap perfect for him and I cannot explain why i spent so much time screening only to leave space for him to do what i was trying to stop...Oh well, I'll say that I learnt from it.

What this meant is that I was forced to take on the changeling with my casters, who did manage to finish him off. But i lost 2 jezzails in the process and on my first turn the jezzails got his LOC down to 3 wounds...he retreated in his next turn and I was never able to get him with enough shots after this. He finished out the game on 1 wound and he spent the game taking apart my army with spell portal casting.

On the plus side, my doomwheel did decent again, not great though. He took down 6 flamers and then drew a round of shooting away from my stormfiends. Not MVP but worth it.

The greyseer with snoutgrovel robes was good, but I didn't notice it made a huge difference. Wholely within 13 isnt particulalry large so it was a bit hard to cover all my units when they were spread out. He did teleport onto an objective for a turn of scoring before getting blasted by the LOC though.

I ended up losing an objective on the last turn which lost me the game. His horrors outnumbered my stormfiends and they couldn't remove them quickly enough to stop them.

Overall i was really happy with the list, had I not made the deployment error I likely would have shot the LOC off turn 1, which would have undone his list quickly. He did make a few errors too though so it possibly balanced out. Regardless it was extremely close and the balance went both ways at different times.

I did miss having mortal wound saves, as all of my heroes were very squishy and suffered to his casting. I may have to look back to the warpseer or bell. But I'll definitely try the list out again.

Endless spells didnt play any part in the game for me. He got all his unbinds and there was never a good chance to get the WLV off. Looking back there was maybe a very small chance of blocking off the objective with vermintide, which may have won me the game, but again he probably would have just unbound it anyway so who knows!

Good game but those changehost are tricky.

It hits pretty hard in the shooting phase, unless you luck has run out and jay is winking at you (basically rolling a double one for shooting attacks).

In any other case most opponents will won’t notice the potential threat a doomwheel can be, considering that it can move through most units (excluding heroes), and be a pest in the enemy’s backline.

with mmmwp and the vial of the fulminator that doomwheel will be able to even one-shoot a big hero, or deal significant damage, as long as you role average or better.

Although those are just some of my thoughts, having been using the doom brigade for a couple of battles, I could call myself an experienced skavenplayer when it comes down to the Art of annoyance 😋.

    Yes-yes

I pretty much take a doomwheel in every list becauae i love the model on the table,i love its rules, it's fun and because it can be an absolute boss if you roll well.

Every game it has made back its points or better. Although  it usually only gets a single round of shooting before it gets taken out, the short range shooting really makes it easy to lock down.

Let us know how you go. I'm actually interested to see how you go with that list, especially the Doomwheel. No Bell is kind of weird.

Yea I haven't played a list without either a warpseer or bell so not sure how it will go.

The snoutgrovel robes will help prevent a nasty battleshock after an alpha strike in the same way a bell would, but very squishy so i need to make sure he is protected. I like the skitterleap options too, because he can skitterleap himself if needed, which i like.

The spare points let me take a pseudo 3rd threat. I know the doomwheel doesnt hit too hard,  but it can do ebough that the opponent cant ignore it. I would probably prefer a hellpit abomination, but unfortunately i dont have the model.

  12. 13 hours ago, Skreech Verminking said:

    I definitely will.

Like probably already mentioned not even I will know how it will end.

the doomwheel is after-all a unit that no side whatsoever could prepare itself for

This is still on my list!

Got an ogor army to paint first though.

  13. Got a game against tzeentch changehost tomorrow. Last game against tzeentch I made the mistake of trying to force pinks off an objective. Even with fully buffed stormfiends, this took a turn too long.

Any tips against them, do I try and snipe off heroes?

The list I plan to run:

Arch warlock - deranged inventor, MMMWP

Grey seer - snoutgrovel robes, skitterleap.

    Warlock engineer- MMMWP

    9 jezzails

    6 stormfiends

    3 x 20 clanrats

    Doomwheel

    Warplightning vortex

    Vermintide

  14. Anyone tried acolytes in smaller units? Trying to think of how to add some threat to my shooting. Got a list with 9 jezzails, 6 stormfiends and 10 acolytes.

Thinking that this unit of 10 for 120 pts could do a ****** tonne of damage on whatever it hits and its not the end of the world if it dies because it was only 120pts.

Opponents shouldn't ignore them but might just underestimate their output. Although,  you almost wouldn't care if they wasted effort to deal with them instead of your jezzails or stormfiends.

I know the problem is that you almost always would rather buffs on the stormfiends but with deranged inventor or even rerolling 1s for a CP, these guys could easily make back their points.

Anyone tried running 10? I know most competitive lists have taken them in much bigger blocks. But to me it just seems that they would  unwieldy, so hoping they might still be a good choice at smaller size.

Island of Blood was good. I managed to hunt down four Rat Ogors, two Warlock Engineers and two Warpfire Throwers from that set. Nice minis, GW should make them available normally instead of the older versions.

Speaking of models - two requests for advice:

    1. As mentioned, I have four Island of Blood / Spire of Dawn Rat Ogors. Very nice models! One problem, though: none of them has a Warpfire Gun listed on the warscroll... I've been wondering of converting two of them so that they have those WFGs, but I'm not sure it's worth the risk of ruining these nice models? On the other hand, without WFGs, the Ogors don't look as a good unit in comparison to Storm Fiends...

Here's how these Ogors look like:

    4z43gm4nw1j31-B.jpg.300f7aa53a94e8ad289a2d3195725c3c.jpg

What do you think, should I tinker with them or leave them alone?

    2. I'm assembling my Skaven army and I've currently run into a problem: I'd really like to add some of the bigger units (Doomwheel, Thanquol & Boneripper, the Screaming Bell...). Unfortunately, I don't feel like I'm good enough to try painting them just yet - but I've also been told that these models could be a real hassle to paint when fully assembled. For instance, painting the Doomwheel pilot is very hard when he's inside the contraption - also, painting Thanquol could be tricky when he's on top of the big Boneripper. The same goes for the Seer on the Bell... So, not sure what to do? I want to play with these models, but I also would like to be able to paint them well at some point... I admit I'm stuck. Help, please-please! 😵

Are you saying you have these models already assembled? That sucks if thats the case but it doesnt make painting them impossible. I think thanquol and the doomwheel would be fine. The doomwheel though will be a real punish.

Great models though so its worth sucking it up to get them on the table.

He's all right for his points, only 260pts.

I'm merely commenting on the loss of a real  sweet ability that could add more tactically to Skaven. But he can do some work if he gets the drop on someone

Where are you finding the points for this guy. I can't add him to lists on azyr and cant find it listed anywhere. Warscroll builder says he costs 320 pts.

Edit: Never mind I found it. Jeeze 260 pts is pretty good for what this guy can do. Huge damage and an awesome sniping spell that can break unit coherency.

  17. 6 hours ago, Gwendar said:

It makes sense.. but that's kind of the thing for me; on paper he seems great but in practice he often doesn't do much for me besides being a Skitterleap machine for the Corruptor w/ SoJ in my magic list. The problem I have with him is the average damage output isn't great but it is enough to take out squishy wizards and the like on average. I just don't know that I would find his points cost justifiable for that role compared to bringing more shooting. Still, he has some mental threat from the fact he can teleport 6" away which can cause opponents to be extra careful of allowing it in anywhere.. maybe even clustering things together more for a better WLV, but I wouldn't bank on that; any reasonably competitive player is not going to allow you to charge any of his support heroes and screen them off. -2 to hit from ranged is nice, but the threat of magic and heavy hitting combat units will still end him quite quickly... hell, 12 Flamers + Exalted and Irondrakes\Sisters of the Watch are examples of some things that can still 1-shot if properly buffed through that -2 to hit. Even WLC's\Jezzails\Fiends are still a threat if you mirror match.

Not saying he's a bad choice for what you're suggesting, I would love to see it tried and tested.. just for me personally I don't care for him. Now.. if he could double-pile in on a kill or something... 😉

Honestly, I think we may see a resurgence of 1-3 units of 5-20 Gutter Runners or Night Runners as a counter. Null deploying or pre-game movement can be huge when we're going to be made to go first a lot of the time, especially against things like Changehost or other null deploy\deepstriking lists.. just a bit unfortunate that Gutter Runners have to come in on the 1st turn.

I guess this is the problem I see with skaven at the moment. We don't have much that can really threaten the backline t1-2 at least not without some lack and deployment error from opponent with gnawholes.

I listened to a podcast the other day discussing the warpgnaw, which was quite interesting, because this thing is an absolute boss if it sees combat...if.

The problem again is the delivery method. A greyseer is going to drop it 9inches away which is a low chance charge. And if you take a deciever to drop it in with dreaded skitterleap I think it's too much of a points investment.

I think I might still test the deciever out in my next game. At the very least it looks like it would be a fun list to play.

Gutter runners and nightrunners is an interesting choice. Don't have the models to try this out though. Have you tried them out yet?

  18. What do people think about decievers? Given the rise in magic heavy and shooting armies, I've been thinking about how good it is to have a backfield threat that can get stuck into mages, shooting blocks and catapults.

On paper deciever sounds like an awesome pick against this meta. A teleport that gets you within 6 inches is awesome, take a thermal rider cloak and your opponent has to be super careful setting up their screens. The plus 4 movement and fly means this guy is gonna get where he needs to and jump over screens.

The -2 to hit from missile attacks also makes him a harder target to snipe off which is a big plus.

The list im thinking of is:

    Arch warlock (deranged inventor)

    Engineer

    Deciever (TRC)

    40 clanrats

    2x20 clanrats

    6 stormfiends

    6 jezzails

    WLV

    Extra CP

    1970 pts

The list has bodies, alpha strike with deciever or skitterleaping WLV bomb, and solid shooting. It may fall down with battleshock but the extra CP should help here.

    What do you guys think?

  19. 22 hours ago, Num said:

Quick question please: do you think that dealing with battle shock through the snoutgrovel robe artifact is a viable strategy?

I don't think I want to spend the points in a screaming bell or a warpseer. I also don't feel the bell of doom is reliable enough.

This would mean losing the vigourdust injector, but isn't it overkill anyway with 6 stormfiends, MMWP and sparks?

In exchange, I can skitterleap my battle shock immunity in the middle of the units that need it...

Here is the list I have in mind:

    Allegiance: Skaventide
    Grey Seer (140)
    - General
    - Trait: Master of Magic
    - Artefact: Snoutgrovel Robes
    - Lore of Ruin: Skitterleap

    - 2x Shock Gauntlets

    Total: 2000 / 2000
    Extra Command Points: 0
    Allies: 0 / 400
    Wounds: 159

    Thanks

Had a great game against tzeentch today which came down to a final roll to land an 11 inch charge in the last turn.

What i learnt from this game is how strong the alpha strike is and how quickly it can ruin your army if you don't have ways to deal with battleshock.

My list had a warpseer and I had thankfully paid to take an extra CP which kept my screens up for an extra turn.

The warpseer though was just so expensive and I love your thinking with the snoutgrovel robe. I think dropping vigour dust injector isnt a game breaker. In fact I've put together a couple of lists to try out now taking this option over warpseer or screaming bell and I like where those extra points can be spent.

However I wouldn't recommend dropping deranged inventor. Against any magic heavy army, the chances of MMMWP not going off are increased and today I learnt how important it was the have the deranged inventor as a backup. Stormfiend efficiency drops off really quickly without buffs so I'd be really cautious about dropping off vigour dust injector and deranged inventor.

Really keen to try out the snoutgrovel robe in my next battle though.

Welp, both games this weekend were a bust with the Fiends\Monks\WLC. I won't lie though, both times I've played it with Sylvaneth I lost the Fiends due to my own stupidity and not pre-measuring from trees.. although when my opponent is using 3d printed ones and not uses the trees (just the bases they fit on) it's easy for me to forget I feel 😅

Anyway, I'm going to keep at it, but from here on out I'll be going with the following for testing and sticking with it over at least 6-8 games to get a better testing pool:

    Allegiance: Skaventide

    Leaders
    Grey Seer (140)

I think one of my biggest issues is how I use Bridge, so I'm just going to take my own advice and drop it to see how it goes. Against more mobile armies (Seraphon...) they will do worse but the combined threat of the Windlaunchers and Jezzails limits board space for squishy heroes to run to. 6 Jezzails should still 7-9 wounds on average with a Spark which is plenty to kill support heroes or bracket something else for the Windlaunchers to potentially finish off. You all know how much I love my WLV so I mean... there it is, doing what it does on T1 or T2\3 against something your opponent wishes they didn't cluster together.

I'm most curious about the Hell Pit though. With it's 2d6" movement, it's going to be used reactively rather than proactively by counter-charging, but that's not to say it can't push up solo.. just don't let it get charged and 1-shot. It's attack profile makes it good for any situation, but I think it shines best as anti-horde. Best of all, I don't need to push around another 40 models and 1 less spell to worry about going off 😉

I like it. How do you think you will go without battleshock immunity though? I'm guessing the thinking here is skaven don't have a whole bunch of need for CP and most units will be escorted by leaders anyway?

Haven't tried it yet, as all my lists have had a bell or warpseer. Looking forward to hearing how it goes nonetheless, certainly gives you more points for toys.

Have you considered the bell of doom?

Gluttons i feel are still necessary, they can deliver huge melee power if properly buffed.

Yea i think the value for points is great even in underguts where they won't be seeing any buffs other than from the pot.

A list im liking at the moment is with goremand instead of tyrants gutguard for the reasons you mentioned. Our drops are too high already that drops dont really matter too much, and the tyrant gutguard ability is shithouse. Whereas the goremand is actually quite good double dipping from the pot.

    The list is

    Tyrant

    Slaughtermaster

    Hunter

    4x ironguts

    4x leadbelchers

    12x gluttons

    4x ironblasters

    20x gnoblars

    4x sabres

    Goremand battalion.

I think this is likely what ill be building into

  22. Some interesting discussion about the underguts in here.

I think what a lot of people have said about them not being a true shooting list is true. Rather than thinking aboit taking as much shooting as possible I think we should be thinking about how to build around the 3-4 ironblasters and tyrant, which makes up the core of the underguts list and gets the most benefit from the tribe.

This means moving away from needing to take tonnes of leadbelchers which I think are quite versatile but perhaps not the best as a competitive option. Fortunately after the 3-4 tyrants, tyrant, tyrants gutguard batallion and its contents we have points to play with and I think this is where the important choices need to come in.

Personally I  like idea of 1-2 x gnoblars for screening and objective control, FLoSH for obvious reasons, and i think there is a good argument to be made for finding room for a hunter and some sabres.

My issue with FLoSH is that we take it outside of the boulderhead tribe and its almost impossible to give it an artefact without taking another battalion. This is because tyrant with the trophy rack really is essential if you are investing in the ironblasters.

I hear the argument for taking gluttons over gnoblars but i think they are just too expensive and if you are taking tyrants gutguard, there really isn't much room for them. Might be wrong here though.

I think the hunter with sabres adds a lot to underguts, given that we don't have too much speed to get around the board, the ability to deploy in the backboard is just so clutch for objective control and taking out casters or catapults, especially in the OBR meta. It also impacts opponent psychology as the threat to the back board will force them to make hard decicisons around movement and deployment. I think this guy can win games against an unprepared opponent.

However, it is very hard to fit both a FLoSH AND a Hunter into the list so a choice needs to be made, im just not sure what the better option is.

Love to hear what people's thoughts are on this.
