What do you have in mind?

Nothing weird. I'm trying to build two armies with GW sculpts that I like:

    • An old school-looking dwarf throng, as big as I can. Waiting for Arcane Journal. Still missing:
      • Between 40 and 60 Dwarf Warriors
      • Bunch of Heroes (I only have 1 runelord and Thorgrim so...).
      • General must be Helga on 3 shieldbearers (only need the shieldbearers).
      • 12 Miners
      • 18 Rangers
      • 16+ 6e editions longbeards.
      • 2 cannons.
      • Engineers and stuff like that (at least 2 more gryos for a nice Barak-Nar like fleet).
    • An small army of Slayers:
      • Youngrim (and Arcane Journal)
      • A few Doomseekers
      • Garagrim
      • A bunch of Heroes (I only have 1 Ungrim).

I'm working on quarrellers and designs for transfer sheets (still learning how this work) and looking for schemes. I'm going for an unified looking crest and emblems.

You lack imagination. It's actually possible with only the AoS kits, just not optimized. :P And that's not talking about converting existing kits with bitz from other sources.

My TOW army is a personal project. I don't want to rush it and I perfectly know what miniatures I need, and believe me that what you said is not an option for me.

But hey, it seems that my problem is the "lack of imagination".

Warcry would have been an even more stellar game if it stayed narratively focused on Eightpoints and Chaos Weirdos as a self-contained ecosystem.

That was my main issue with Warcry. I didn't have any interest in Chaos, and all warbands were just a "miss" for me.
Underworlds and Killteam was/is a better deal for me.

I really don’t know what ‘AoS-ification’ of skaven would look like as a design direction.

To be honest, old skavens had everything that an AoS factions needs. I mean, frankenstein rats, rat-abominations, grenadiers with venomous gas... another Tuesday in the Mortal Realms.

Again, if GW will continue with support for TOW and that the sentence "the scope of the project has changed" has some substance, than it is perfectly possible that Vampire Counts, Daemons and Dark Elves will become a core faction sooner than later.

Even that, I don't think that the Legacy Factions are going to have any release in the next two years. To be honest, I expect a lot of Campaign Supplements (aka, Horus Heresy newBlack Books) for the existing Core Factions, maybe with a special guests (Kislev/Cathay maybe?). Whatever was "the scope of the project has changed" will start kicking hard in maybe 2 to 3 years.

I hope I'm wrong because all Vampire Coast posts from @Sception are a joy to read, and an Arcane Journal will be enough to start a new project.

I see the legionaries as a potential representation of that. Humans that are being transformed into beats that joined BoC.

I have the opposite feeling: they have enough armour and weapons that they look more "civilized" than other warbands. Horns are just decorations, and that bestigor feels a lot more civilized than any other beastmen model. And remember that most warbands already had elves and dwarfs as part of their rooster, so, it's nothing new.

On and on it goes. So when the word is that "everything is an ability" I don't hear "simplicity". I hear "the mental load and staring at reminders on your phone instead of talking to your opponent in this ostensibly social activity is going to increase". I'd like to be wrong but the every weapon loadout is the same stuff with SCE is not giving me good signals. Not because it's a problem on its own, but it's one fewer means of differentiation which will have to be pushed away to simple decisions or comparisons and onto a bespoke special rule.

    I partly agree with that.

WFB only has WS and the allowed equipment for each unit. Everything else, Save, Wound, AP and Damage (multiple wounds) comes from equipment.

AoS has a diferent design, all stats are linkes to each unit and weapons are "free". So, Health, Save, To Hit/Wound, Rend, Damage and a bunch of USR should be enough to have as many diferent units as you want.

In Honesty as long as 40K keep doing well for them, it doesn’t matter since it vastly outsell any other product they have.

That's exactly what I think. 40k is a monster that will destroy any economic score, eveything else can only dream about being on the top for a few weeks, maybe even months if they work for it (hype, new edition, nostalgia,...).

But doesn't matter how hard you try, the goose with the golden eggs will be right behind.

Yes, I completly agree that for AoS there shouldn't be a difference between a sword, spear and even a halberd statwise. That is not the problem.

I agree with that. It becomes better for armies like Fyreslayers: 4 Troops. If we take Vulkites as an example, we could have:

    • Vulkites with Double "Fireforged Weapon" (I don't care if they are build with the picks, axes, swords or whips) and have an offensive basic unit.
    • Vulkites With "Fireforged Weapons" and Bladed Slinghields and have a defensive basic unit that can throw their shields to reduce any charge bonus from the enemis.

That would add some playstyle variation and it's easier to see than a Grandhammer (1/5 for nuLiberators) and  play too (all the unit has the same loadout).

Probably because if the choice is between extra damage or extra defense on a unit which is designed to mostly sit on objectives, you're taking the defensive option every time, if you care about trying to maximise your list.  And if you're not that bothered about optimising your list, then being able to build your models however you like is maybe more appealing anyway.

That's all about GW, they can give enough tools (in the rules) to make diferent gameplay styles. But the point is, let the player choose.

Hopefully 4th edition will be solid so we won't need to.

I hope so. Even if there are some things that I find a bit weird (the shield thing with the profiles and characteristics), I think that the game is starting to have a really strong and structured core.

There is a lot that we need to know, but just hope for the best!

    Why ?

I don't know, but all armies should have their own diferent gameplays without using any "outside" models.

Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with Campaign books with unique armies, and a Big Waaagh is perfectly fine in that perspective. But I prefer when they are personal projects instead of an excuse to unlock a basic gameplay style.

Simplification of general game rules is fine. This isn’t a simplification but a removal of choice. Once units have no choices left they become boring since they can’t diverge from the behavioral pattern that’s been set for them.

That will be a problem for some factions that only have 1 or 2 troops that can be equiped with diferent loadouts. Guttrippaz, Vulkites, Ogres, Arsboyz, etc, are going to lose some gameplay.

With the new regiment system, a pure IJ or KB army is gonna become repetitive very soon because you'll always get the same units even if you bring lots of unique heroes. Meanwhile wity Big Waagh, you can get an IJ frontline regiment with a megaboss, ardboyz and brutes, supported by a KB regiment with a gator and boltboyz... Opens up many possibilities.

This doesn't sound good to me...

I had to go and check they weren't mentioned in the purge article.

Do any of the KO gunships count as artillery?

Imagine playing a game with Dawnbringers V siege rules (matched play) and find out that your cannons are not artillery pieces (artillery has special bonus for siege). Doesn't matter how many times you point out that they have the WAR MACHINE keywor or show the model with a Great Sky Cannon (btw, since 2017). They are clearly handgund with a weird profile.

Meanwhile, we use our ships as Monsters for battalions purpose LOL

It seems that liberators have the same weapon profile with two hammers or hammer and shield. Great for modelling and rule of cool, but it feels a bit extreme in terms of simplification

I'm not a big fan of that. I had a bit of hope that rules would be closer to the models they represent (and I'm not talking about lore, more about the physical models).

Pirates of the Vampire Coast - Luthor Harkon being probably the best option for special character makes this probably the best choice for Army of Infamy, with obvious additions, many stolen from total warhammer, that are easy to model in zombie pirates (mix and match empire free company with zombie bits) and cannons (take empire cannon models and just stick zombies or skeletons next to them as the crew), damned knights (brettonian knights painted in ghostly colors), Mournguls (no longer sold by GW, but still available on the secondary market), maybe even undead sea monsters (paint dark elf charybdis or hydra with dead flesh, maybe convert a bit of battle damage), etc.  They also have a history of allying with Dark Elves, which could make for some interesting allied armies with extra pirate feel from coursairs and the like.  The only downside here is that Vampire Coast might eventually get to be its own official faction in tOW, but if that does happen it won't be any time soon

This alone will be enough for me to start a Vampire Count army.

Personally if we’re recommending AoS books, I recommend both of Drekki Flynt’s books, but read them in order. It’s better that way.

    100% this

I'm a bit biased, but they feel so "grounded" that you can understand all the kharadron's life (and I'm saying this with a book that has a flying ship following a dragon between levitating mountains made of ice).
