In Matched Play (which is the standard points based pickup game, and the format played in tournaments) you are required to bring a certain number of Battleline units in your army. In the 2000 point game which is the most commonly played, you have to have at least 3 Battleline units to make it a valid army.

There are also occasionally rules that interact with the Battleline keyword. For example in the current Matched Play ruleset (in the General's Handbook 2022-2023 Season 2), certain heroes cannot be shot at if they are near enough to Battleline units.

This is a great answer in terms of mechanics. It might also be worth mentioning that from a more narrative/simulationist point of view, Battleline troops are generally be those core to a faction's tactics and forces. Generally either the troops they are most easily able to field, or the ones they are least able to do without. At least, that's the concept.

yes this kinda makes sense, to match the storyline and prevent simple minmaxing during gameplay

PersonallybI don’t think theres too much reason.

personally Imm guessing the genuinely idea was to force an army of taking certains unit, just so they wouldn’t spamm the best units, although it didn’t seem to have worked to well, considering that some armies like ironjawz just basically ignore that

will look at an Ironjawz army, once i am done with the Stormcast and Cities armies at hand

Can anyone shed me some lights on the purpose of “Battleline”?

Is it supposed to be some sort of prerequisites for army formation?

Or is its fulfilment opening up some capabilities?

Cheers
