Height of the Model - Different than Standard - How Important Is It?

I am hoping to get feedback on the height of the base...

I am more a tinkerer/painter than a player so I tend to get a little more excited about basing than most. And, at times, I really want to put a figure up on a 'mound' or structure for more dramatic effect. Well, most times, really :o

If I do this, eg: make the bases higher, will it make the model itself less playable/valuable?

That depends how you play and who you play with.  Any base to base system doesn't concern itself with base height.  Model to model complicates it, but no one is really going to get upset about a nice base unless it seems really beardy.

If someone takes a Ripperdactyl on a pole and claims you cannot attack it, you should walk away from the game and call it an autowin.

Well, that's a double edged sword anyway.  If nothing can reach it than it can reach nothing itself (ranged weapons aside).

In 99% of cases it 'harms' rather than helps when you put a model extra high on a base (easier to target you up high). Because of this, it's not minded by players I find. BUT you should use an approximate height of where the model would normally be when you are stooping to see line of sight. To be fair.
