Effective use of allies?

Hey, guys!

I need some sage advice, because I’m hitting a brick wall trying to realize this concept:

I recently grabbed the Fyreslayers start collecting box. They’re a joy to paint, so I’m hooked, but lately I can’t stop thinking about a Barak-Thryng Kharadron/Fyreslayer team-up. I’m excited to try it but I want to be reasonably sure I’m not blowing hundreds of dollars on a worthless army.

Mind you, I don’t need to crush tournaments, just stand a chance in the average game (and maybe kick a little ass now and then). So here’s the crux of it:

would you learned veterans advise a (2000pt) fyreslayers allegiance army with an allied Arkanaut Frigate and five grundstok thunderers, OR a Kharadron allegiance army with twenty allied vulkites and a runesmiter and grimwrath berserker.

Maybe this question is unanswerable, but if someone wants to try, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest just going Grand Alliance Order and taking whatever dwarves you like :) You lose the runes from your fyreslayers but can still carry over all the really powerful warscroll abilities. The Squats Kharadron Overlords will still be good at shooting things with lots of rend and you have options to bring in Disspossed units like runesmiths and longbeards.

My friend who plays Fyreslayers often uses Endrinriggers as allies to good effect and I think the other balloon guys are good too. I'm not sure how much a frigate and thunders will add other than some nice models.

Vulkites really need to start the game 30 strong to get full effect from their huge points drop in GH17. Or at least maybe put a battlesmith with them to re-roll armour saves.

I think GA Order is just going to give you more options to have a collection of varied models, strong individual units and tactical options. I know Tom Lyons did pretty well at Adepticon recently with a mixed order army based around big blocks of Vulkites, Arkanauts and Longbeards so their are definitely builds that will be reasonably competitive.

Sorry - I'm not a expert on Dwarves armies by any means but since nobody was taking on your question I thought I would share what I could :)

@Twitch of Izalith The Grand Alliance Allegiance Abilities are much weaker (comparatively) than the ‘Specialist’ Grand Alliances.

While one could leverage the Grand Alliance and the Firestorm expansion Abilities simultaneously, one looses out entirely on all Command Traits, Artefacts, Allegiance Abilities, additional spells (or other magical/prayers) from the more focused Allegiance.

@Molochmaschine Fyreslayers are solid choices currently, but the Battalions introduced in the 2017 General’s Handbook require access to the Allegiance Abilities to really shine and get access to some of the Warscroll Battalion Abilities.

A Small force of Kharadron sounds like it could be a fun side addition to a ‘Descendents of Grimnir’ style force.  Thunderers give a ranged component, but won’t have access to the benefits of an Aether khemist as a multiplier.

At the end of the day, most importantly, do you think they look cool?

I think they would look astoundingly cool, and it would give me an excuse to expand into a second army (feels more justifiable when there’s overlap). I guess I just wanted an idea as to how well it would work. Seems like these are two armies that really need their own specific abilities and buffs though.

Maybe endrinriggers in a fyreslayers Army? It would be cheap but man, I want one of those airships. Gunhauler perhaps, as fire Support?

either way, I appreciate the replies!

I’d say that the start collecting boxes offer a solid value for trying a new Army.

And the 2018 Start Collecting for Kharadron Overlords would give you a Gunhauler and 5x Thunderers, some skywardens and an endrinmaster.

You can quite easily fit in 10 Thunderers and a Khemist for a nice 340 points, which should do the trick at 2k! If you fancy the all rifle loadout, that's 32 (I think) shots coming out of them with the Khemist buff. Just keep in mind they will be very slow to move up the board, but with the Fyreslayers ability to deep strike I assume mobility won't really be an issue.

If you want something a bit more Kharadron than that, you can just about fit a unit of Arkanauts and a Frigate into your allies limit. Gives you a pretty mobile pair of units that can dish out some fire support!
