  2. Been watching the Twitch stream with one eye for a couple of hours. They did explain the summoning mechanic for the Beasts: You get one summoning point each turn. In addition, you can choose to inflict d3 mortal wounds on a unit close to the herdstone (I didn't catch the range, but presumably it's the same expanding range as the rest of the herdstone abilities?), and get a summoning point for each MW. In addition, the Allherd greatfray has a command ability that can give you more points. Then we have this preview of the costs of summoning units in the first preview:

    I'm all giddy. I don't think I've looked this much forward to any release since I got back into the hobby two years ago! It's even a week earlier than people on this thread were expecting.

  4. No hobby update yet, but I played my first Path to Glory game tonight! Fought against Bonesplitterz, Escalation battleplan with a single Ghur realm trait (Reckless Agression - charge or die!) and spell (Wildform) available. It was a lot of fun and very tense all the way through, went 5-5 in the end but I lost because at the end of the fifth round I had nothing left except the bray shaman, hiding out near one objective with a single wound remaining, while the orcs had an uninjured Big Boss, half an archer unit and a couple of boarboyz left...

    I'm not sure how I could have played better, except I know I placed my herdstone poorly and never got to use any of its benefits. Wouldn't have mattered much I think, only failed a casting roll once and that was by more than one. Actually, at one point I piled my gors in away from an objective and failed to contest it, that might have been my biggest error and possibly what cost me the game.

    The minotaurs and the chariots were probably the stars of the game for me. The minotaurs wiped out a unit of Morboyz, but I got pretty unlucky on dice rolls in the last couple of rounds and failed to kill the big boss despite reasonable odds. The chariots came in from ambush to grab an objective, and actually managed to fight off two big stabbas. Their staying power with 6 wounds and a 4+ save (as much good as that did against rend -2) was fantastic, a lot of the damage they took was from mortal wounds when the big stabbas died and threw away their spears.

    Tactics aside, I took some pictures!

    Combat breaks out around the hot spring objective, gors charging into the boarboyz and the beastlord coming in from the side! We totally forgot that the terrain should have been giving my gors cover bonus, but we also forgot to give the cover bonus to his guys later so figured it evened out. The gors held pretty well, but the beastlord failed to do enough damage before the big boss arrived on the scene and smashed him up...

    Wide shot of the same scene, showing the single chariot remaining on the far side of the map with one wound left at this point. The chariot ended up charging in with the shaman rotating out to hold the objective instead, but it didn't do any good as everything just died and so couldn't contest the mid-field objective.

    All in all a very fun game, and I'm looking forward to my next one! My beastlord got the Heedless of Injury champion reward (5+ invulnerable save), so he should be a lot more survivable next time around...

    I'm currently thinking orange at the source that fades through red to purple or magenta at the edges, to make it look a little more sorcerous rather than just fiery. Will experiment with it when the time comes.

  5. Today is a pretty good day for us Brayherd players, with the new announcement of the new battletome complete with endless spells and an official herdstone model! I never preorder anything, but September is going to be an exception... even though I have plans for my own herdstone (ordered the bits I was missing for it last week, they should be here soonish) I'll still grab the new one for variety.

    As if that wasn't enough, today I finished the gors and shaman I've been working on. As some of you may have noticed these were done with a slightly different skin tone. I used Dryad Bark base, Naggaroth Night shading, Druchii Violet wash and highlighted with Gorthor Brown and Baneblade Brown. I had previously used the same colours on the bullgor musician, where it came out awfully pale and I ended up dulling it a little with Seraphim Sepia afterwards. On these gors, I embraced the paleness and I love how it came out! I also made a little experiment by giving three of them reddish brown hair/fur (Rhinox Hide/Druchii Violet/Doombull Brown/Tuskgor Fur) instead of the traditional grey. Not thrilled with the results, but I'll probably try it again with the Mournfang Brown-based skin tone at some point, if only for variety within the herd. Anyway, enough talk, here are some pictures!

    I wanted the shaman's cloak to look like a patchwork of different leathery hides, so I mixed some skin colours into my usual yellowish leather colour on a few of the patches.

    Still lots of work to do, but I enjoy seeing my progress as painted models slowly replace primed ones. Next up, finishing the two chariot conversions, basing them and priming, then on to painting the big beastie!

    EDIT: With the new endless spell models coming, it looks like I'm going to have to pick a "magic colour" for my herd, and I obviously can't go with the box art colour... Light blue? Nah. Reddish orange? Purple? Magenta/pink? Venomous green? I'm very uncertain. What do you guys think?

    1. Full access to all the units they lost during AoS 1 like Warherds, dragon ogors etc.
    2. Their own endless spells
    3. A new herdstone and possibly other new minis
    4. A revamp of items and allegiance abilities
    5. Access to the full range of Tzaangors from the Tzeentch book
    6. A strong chance of getting marks, giving them access to a range of really useful allies.
    7. Their range back in stores
    8. No longer having to buy a separate pack of round bases which added 4-6€ to the price of each unit.

     

     

    9. Presumably some battalions in the battletome.

    But yeah, really hyped for this, wasn't expecting any kind of support for the next several years so I'm super happy with what we're getting even if there aren't any new models (except endless spells and that awesome herdstone).

    I'm curious to learn how much warscrolls will change and in what ways. Really hope they beef up the beastlord (the conditional command ability is awful) and give bland units like Dragon Ogres more of a niche.

  8. Fantastic news! I for one am glad it's not a shared battletome with Darkoath or other hornless chaos factions. The herdstone model is fantastic and unexpected, I'll definitely grab that even if I'm planning my own custom herdstone. I'm super grateful for all of this even if there are no new unit models, when I started my Brayherd army last year I wasn't expecting any kind of support for a loooong time, but now almost everything I wanted for the faction is coming true! ? So hyped for September now.

  9. So, the big guy is assembled, based and primed. First model I prime non-greyscale, picked up a can of AP Leather Brown last week.

    Exciting news for me, I was roped into a Path to Glory campaign so it looks like I'm going to have to actually play a few games for once!

    The campaign is called The Fate of Excelsis and happens around a free city in Ghur. Blurb (not by me):

    Spoiler

    The Free City of Excelsis was founded after the end of the Realmgate Wars, around the Spear of Mallus, a fragment of the World-That-Was. This stone allowed to see the future and help make the city rich and relevant. The Spear of Mallus grew to be so important that the currency of Excelsis, glimmerings, would be made solely from fragments of this stone. Said fragments would allow their owners to see, if for a while, the future, hence why Excelsis is described as being rich in prophecy. In more than thirty years, Excelsis' borders were expanded and its population doubled until there was no space left for housing. Excelsis's craftsmen decided to keep building anyway, making the city a labyrinthine network of alleyways called Veins.

    Now the city is in crisis. The Shyish Necroquake has animated a long dead Necromancer commanding countless spirits of the dead sending Coast of Tusks into chaos. With the Stormcast defenders of the city stretched thin and a garrison of Darkling Covenants nominally in charge of the city hidden cells of The Cult of the Fated Path decide to strike. At the same time a savage Orruk warlord makes his move on the city intent to harness the power of the Spear of Mallus for his own ends. Horned Brayherds whoop and bleat as they charge into combat against any who oppose them dedicating their sacrifices to their dark gods under herdstones made of solid realmstone. Who will emerge victorious and wield the prophetic power of the Spear of Mallus when all enemies are laid low? Who will truly find GLORY!

    Other players are Nighthaunt, Stormcast, Tzeentch, Sylvaneth, Bonesplitterz, Darkling Covens and Bretonnia (the organiser made follower tables for that). I was generously allowed to use my Beastlord on Chariot as a champion without getting less follower rolls (and keeping Brayherd allegiance), and Tuskgor Chariots were upgraded to two per roll. Some similar adjustments were made to a few of the other factions, as several of the players only have old WHFB armies, in fact only the Nighthaunt and Sylvaneth players have played AoS before. Everything is rolled for (including whether we get followers or rewards after each battle), but we can reroll units we don't have and were allowed to change one result in the initial force. With that in mind, my beginning army, dubbed The Darkhorn Tribe consists of:

    • Renglor Darkhorn
      • Beastlord on Chariot
    • Vorgrar Palehide
      • Great Bray-Shaman
    • Gors
      • 10 Gors with hand weapons and shields
    • Beastriders
      • 2 Tuskgor chariots
    • The Herdstone Guard
      • 3 Bullgors with greataxes

    Very decent I think, but a lot fewer bodies than I expected. I hope I'll be able to build up some more quickly! My first game, against the Bonesplitterz, should be soon. Maybe this weekend, maybe some evening next week. Any tactical advice appreciated!

     

     

    In other news, I've almost finished painting  the Great Bray-Shaman (Vorgrar Palehide) and five gors. Here's a quick shot I took of them last night, only warpaint and adding tufts and stuff to the base left to do! I should have time to finish them this weekend, will post better pictures then.

    The bullgor models aren't that bad. They grew on me, and were actually the most fun to paint of any models I've painted so far.

    I was cautiously optimistic when LLV dropped the beastman rumour, but now that Moonstone is backing it up and with more details, I'm officially hyped! ? While new models (more hero choices, plastic centigors and something to replace chariots mostly) would be cool, I'm perfectly happy with a soup-tome and some endless spells for now. Maybe I can even convert a doombull or something from that flaming bull spell, that might be awesome...

  11. Hey guys. Looks like I'll be playing my first game of AoS soon, as a Path to Glory campaign is starting soon and I've been roped into it. I've rolled up my warband and was hoping you lot could give me some tactical pointers.

    I was generously allowed to use my converted Beastlord on Chariot (see my signature for pictures) as my champion instead of a regular Beastlord with the same amount of units, and Tuskgor chariots were changed to come in twos (the same table has 20 ungors, which cost as much as two chariots so it seemed fair). No artifacts or command traits, as the champion traits we gain will serve the same purpose.

    The warband is:

    • Beastlord on Chariot
    • Great Bray-Shaman
    • 10 Gors (shields)
    • 3 Bullgors (two-handed axes)
    • 2 Tuskgor Chariots

    Very low body count considering what I expected. So, how should I play this?

Look at the Fungoid Cave-shaman, he's got a segmented centipede-thing with prominent mandibles (like these things) on his staff and some other sort of segmented bug on his back as a cloak. If we're to take him as an indicator of what the Moonclain aesthetic will be, insects seem to be a decent part of their look after fungus and squigs.

    I might get rid of the shield on the gor (the shield arm is just held by poster putty at the moment), if I can pose him to convincingly hold the original stonehorn reins which would be connected to the horns. Other stuff that remains is fixing the small jaw-horns (there's a gap at the moment) and cleaning up a few more joins where possible, attaching the shield to the beastlord and adding some small detail bits (hanging skulls etc) to bring the whole thing together.

  14. So, I mentioned I had some conversions in progress... here's a first look!

    First off, Wargor Standard Bearer. A compendium unit, but I figure my friends won't mind for casual games. Otherwise I can always use him as a Bestigor standard bearer.

    Nothing overly complicated - Bestigor body, weapon swap with one of the one-handed minotaur axes, shoulder spike from Chaos Knighst for flair, minotaur banner. Had to lengthen the banner pole with a part of another, but there are two in each box of ten bestigors so I have plenty of those. The skull on the banner was the  biggest issue, it comes strapped to one of the set of horns in the Ghorgon/Cygor kit. Had to carve it loose and pin+greenstuff the points back on.

    He's mostly ready, just need to clean up a bit the greenstuff work on the horns and some minor stuff.

     

    Next up, counts-as tuskgor chariots! What do you mean mournfangs? Those are clearly tuskgors, I don't know what you're talking about...

    Chariots never made sense for a forest-dwelling race, to me. How do you drive something with wooden wheels inside an ancient, primeval forest, thick with underbrush and roots sticking out of the ground? Some kind of cavalry, riding hairy monstrous horned forest beasts makes a lot more sense for beastmen.

    These are much more WIP than the wargor, obviously. I don't like the massive tusks they come with, so I'm going to find some smaller horn-bits to stick there instead. Planning to sculpt a mane as well, to hide the horn-joins. When I'm happy with everything else I'll try to create reins for the riders to hold, not sure how best to do that... greenstuff around thin wire, or just go for chains?

    The rider was surprisingly easy to do, didn't need to repose his legs at all, just file them down a lot, and the saddle a bit as well. I was originally planning to use ungor riders, but I am happy with the choice of using bestigors instead now that I've made it. Ungors would have been a lot more work.

    Not happy with the horn placement on this one, may need to cut them off again and put them lower. Looks a bit like he has a hat with horns on...

    Haven't assembled a rider for this one yet, but the horns are much better.

    The horns are leftovers from the minotaur kit by the way. I only have one more pair, but two more tuskgors to assemble. Not sure what I'll do for the fourth one, need to find something of the right size... actually, there might be something I can work with in one of the ogre kits... hmmm...

    Anyway, the final piece I'm working on. Very early WIP. This piece will be a counts-as Beastlord on Tuskgor Chariot. Another compendium unit, but I might run it as a counts-as Ghorgon in some cases, maybe (if I want to use two, or something).

    I don't like the heads of the stonehorn or the thundertusk, so I was always planning to do some freehand sculpting there, but had sudden inspiration when digging through my bits box: Why not use this extra Cygor head with horns and all? Took a lot of figuring out how best to attach it, but I think this works.

    There will be another greenstuff layer to properly blend the cygor head to the stonehorn body with sculpted fur. The shield on his shoulder isn't attached, not sure if I want to actually use it or just stick with the default ones, they cover that area better but don't look as thematic. The front saddle will be mounted by a gor, the back one by a beastlord (the GW finecast one). The tail hasn't been attached yet (for fear of breaking it when working on the rest of the model), but I'll be using the longer one. Same goes for the delicate skulls-on-strings bit that goes between the horns on the throne-saddle.

    Finally, credit where credit is due. The above conversions are heavily inspired by Thegoblinsgrotto over on the 9th Age community. His fantastic work was one of the main inspirations behind my army.

    Wauw I came to look for inspiration for my Wood elves but now I feel I need to revisit my beastmen aswell. Never painted them for an army although I probably have enough of them to make one . I don't think I ever saw anyone painting warpaint so good it really looks amazing. The Minotaur conversions are the best really great idea with the ungor Drummer ?  in fact best idea I've seen so far. I've got 2 boxes of Minotaurs painted a long time ago but no banners and no drummer. Love this blog

  16. Sequitor colour tests completed. These two have the same concept, but different approaches to individual colours that I may end up mix-and-matching. Would love opinions on those choices:

    Armour: Gold or bronze?

    Jade: Darker or lighter shade?

    Robe: Darker or lighter red?

    Tabard/inside robe: White or cream?

    Leather: Brown or black?

    Potion/magic colour: Orange or turquoise?
