I'd be dubious about them casting new heroes for every faction for it. That's a big investment in plastic - doubly so if they are thinking even modest long term (ergo each one is its own casting rather than on a single mould with them all) and for use outside of the product range.

No magic at launch sounds odd too if just because magic is pretty big in AoS and holding it off for an expansion seems just a little odd; though on the other hand that would fast create a big market demand for it as an expansion content.

Totally agree. Another thing that makes me skeptical is if all the Underworlds warbands have rules how can there be no magic in the game? All the Nightvault warbands are based around wizards.

It'd be great if this was true but some of it doesn't make sense (Exiles and Highborn) and the rest does smell of wishlisting.

  2. It is really hard to say what this might be. Underworlds and Kill Team are completely different. And if it was a Necromunda clone they would have said so. And if it was a replacement for Skirmish they could have teased that.

What's similar about the 2 games they mentioned is this:

    • Squad based combat
    • Squads are related to Units from the core game (i.e 40K or AOS)
    • Quick games that are easy to get into
    • Both games use special dice.

    What's different is this:

    • Underworlds has a completely different ruleset to AOS. Kill Team is closer to 40K than Underworlds is to AOS.
    • Underworlds uses hexes. Kill Team measures movement like 40K.
    • Kill Team uses the same models as 40K. Underworlds has specific models for specific warbands.
    • Kill Team uses Terrain. Underworlds uses a 2D board.
    • Underworlds uses lots and lots of tokens

So what are the best bits?

IMHO: rules closer to AOS than Underworlds, measuring distances. Specific models, use of Terrain. Special Dice.

I am a bit worried this will be a Gore Chosen successor. I could live with that - I have 3 Chaos armies. But what I think we all want is AOS kill team not a chaos only thing.

But, and this is where it's just my opinion, there comes a point where certain factions like the 4 Kit (plus 1) Flesh Eater Courts just don't have enough 'meat' to them. Proper fixes for this becomes modifying the lore to fit with a 'merger' or supplementing the faction with fresh releases (which with FEC they're trying, and the debate is whether that's enough).

I really don't see the issue here. DoK, Sylvaneth and Fyreslayers all have low kit counts if you exclude heroes. DoK have 3 and a half with no heroes sold separately (excluding Morathi). Sylvaneth have 4 kits excluding all of their heroes. Fyreslayers have 3 (if you count the Chosen Axes) excluding Heroes, as do the FEC. If that works for GW financially then yeah Darkling Covens, Wanderers and Gutbusters should be fine as factions and get their own seperate battletomes. The only last group that requires a compendium (LoN/BoC/Skaven) battletome to work are High Aelves. And TBH I hope they get one (just not one that includes Darkling Covens or Wanderers).

I really don't see the LoN/BoC armies wiping out the smaller factions. They can and should co-exist. As we see with the Gitz & BoC the bigger books allow for sub-groups (i.e Tzaangor only armies) so there's no long term benefit in fold armies with GHB allegiance abilities into bigger books.

The only factions that are in really disfficulty IMHO are Dispossessed and Greenskinz due to the age of the models, and the non-Darkling Dark Aelves (Scourgerunner Privateers, Shadowblades and Order Serpentis) they have maybe 2 kits max many of which are half kits shared with other factions.

  4. Honestly I think what Hammerhal showed was that WHQ can have a hub zone (Cinderfall) and then have dungeons coming off that. What I'd like to see is a city zone with expandable dungeons/adventures coming off it. That way you can have a Chaos, Destruction or Death dungeons. A simple but flexible cave tileset, a flexible underground ruins set, a detailed map and maybe a realm of chaos tileset for that once in a while when the game takes you through a realm gate :)

This is real wish listing but right now I'm fascinated with Ghur and the Crawling City. I'd love to see that, it has interesting and varied Humans, Skaven, Duardin and was liberated by SCE. It's also moving so that mechanic would give reason for teh different dungeons.

  5. Jervis Johnston hints at something happening for AOS skirmish:

I might be reading too much into it but as it flows directly out of a conversation about Underworlds minis and how you can use them in the core AOS game - maybe they're looking at some crossover between Underworlds and AOS skirmish?!

Awesome job!  I have been thinking of playing some games of Skirmish for ages but didn't like how many units were not present.  Now I really should pick up the rulebook to use with this document.

Keep up the good work, it looks very professional.

@Aegisgrimm don't rush too fast - the last WD issue hinted that there were updates to skirmish coming or at least an article about it. Might be there's a new book just around the corner in the new year!

There's definitely something in the ether. If you listen to Jervis Johnson near the end of the new Stormcast podcast  it sounds like something is afoot for AOS Skirmish :)

Take Darkling Covens, they've got army rules in the Generals Handbook, but right now are not listed as their own force on the GW store. Are they coming as their own army, are they being downsized, forgotten, dropped, replaced etc... For a newbie those are important questions - esp if they want to play with those rank and file troops and sorceresses upon dragons.

    This. 100% this.

I like the reorganized site. I really do. BUT the conflation of GHB armies was unnecessary and confusing. Darkling Covens, Wanders and Freeguild should have been left separate. They have allegiance abilities.

The other Aelves been mashed together is totally fine but GHB factions are either a thing or not. This is a mixed message.

Where AoS suffers in my opinion for this type of game is lack of suitable terrain.  I was looking at my old cardboard Mordheim scenery the other day and it provides mountains more cover and levels over the current scenery that's available.  However I'm now starting to diverge away from rumours :D  #skirmishjanuary!

    2

For all its problems the new Azyrite Townscape provides good multilevel terrain. The ophidian archway and numinous occulum do that too IMHO. The problem is the current AOS terrain range lacks a coherent style. E.g the warscryer citadel, mage wrath throne & arcane ruins have a WHFB aesthetic while the Azyrite stuff looks completely different. Up till recently I've been using my LOTR osgiliath ruins for AOS skirmish so it all looks similar (#firstworldproblems I know).

If you look at 40K kill team terrain there's a coherent theme to the scenery. The Ruins of Elixia (from years back) might have been an attempt by GW to have a good AOS terrain bundle (or just a way to move product, I'm not sure) but If we are getting Skirmish in 2019 (fingers and toes crossed) then we need a good multilevel terrain bundle.

    Im super excited of skirmish!!!

And maybe is nothing but on Instagram they post a picture of nurgle vs high elfs on round bases... know what I mean?

This looks too big to be skirmish IMHO. But fingers crossed.

Hello everyone!  Any reality to the "rumors" that HAGG NAR will be getting nurfed?  What I have heard is that the 7" 5+ Fanatical Faith save will be altered to "wholly within" 14" of the general?  Thanks in advance....

At least right now they are still rumors. And probably will still be rumors until we get a FAQ or GHB 2019. I think it's pure speculation at this point.

    This.

But in fairness, many of us here on this site have repeated this "idea" so much that I understand why people think its a certainty. It isn't. Nothing is. I personally think any DoK changes will be in the GHB which is months away.

My account of things, I recall on launch day that it wasn’t listed among the preorder terrain button, but that you had to dig through pre-orders to find it. My local FLGS did not receive one on launch day (States) and I had to order it separately through them (Which I didn’t receive until today).

So I have this funny idea that they may have known there was an issue with the box.

Mine was available for preorder from a 3rd party shop. And arrived as usual by post a few days after launch. I don't think we need to put tin foil hats on about it. More likely there was an issue between HQ and where the item was packed/made.

The product had almost zero marketing. There was no fanfare, no videos, nothing which IS strange but it wasn't until this thread and the feedback started to happen that GW reacted.

Honestly, I'm surprised they haven't made an apology or explanation post on the community site about this issue.  It would be better for them to "get in front of this".

I'm happy enough with the set, but it was a pretty major mistake, and I fully understand why people are angry.

Any tips on building narrative for generic heroes in DoK army? Thus far I've just tried to see if something interesting happens in-game, but thus far it's just been either me dying or killing whatever is stupid to walk close to my fully buffed Bloody Taco Stand of DOOM.

I just made a post to my plog with a narrative for my Medusa general see it below.

What I do is begin with the army composition, any conversions, my paint scheme and my base scheme to see what story is being told visually.

So my force is Khailebron and has a good selection of both snakes and witches with a cauldron guard battalion, my colour scheme is metallic and my basing scheme is desert ruins. My Medusa General is converted with an old metal Morathi and my Hag Queen for the Cauldron Guard is Yvrainne from 40k.

So then I started reading any and all offical Aelf lore available. You can do this by buying the AOS novels and novellas (they are pretty good and there's a DoK priestess in The Heart of Winter novella btw) and/or with the multitude of AOS lore sites, youtubers etc.

    My narrative is here:

My advice is start with what you have. Then look at what you know about the army and the lore. Then see if anything inspires you.

Plus you don't need a complete narrative for your force / hero. A starting point is good enough IMHO. Then you can build it as you play :)

So what exactly is in the kit? Am I understanding that the sprue below is not supposed to be there?

    1 hour ago, Ashes said:

Instead of that sprue it contains half of the content of the older Azyrite Ruins.

Trying to be clear about this. What's actually missing is the piece in the bottom centre of the below image - right? The long single story wall with 2 windows and 3 doorways?

Instead of that what is included is this?

We've seen that the new factions have emerged and sucked in those old model lines with a rebox and a rename - witch elves become daughter of Khaine etc.

They said that the new factions would be getting the new models, so don't expect to get a new chaos chosen for your Warriors of Chaos compendium for example.

Nor did I ever expect that the chaos warriors would get a model overhaul and still be called chaos warriors for example, but they might be a new Doomsworn warrior or whatever for the Slaves to darkness faction.

In the same way that I never saw "new" chaos marauder sculpts coming out and being called chaos marauders.  Perhaps it would have been better to say that the Darkoath are the barbarian marauder tribes of the Age of Sigmar in the same way that the Chaos Marauders (khurgan, hung etc) were the barbarian marauder tribes of the old world.

    2

This. I've always though that GW missed a trick by not combined Chaos Chosen into the Everchosen Faction.  That always made sense in my head.

For me it's been very clear that Blightkings and Blood Warriors are filling the Chaos Warrior with mark of god role.

For me it's never made sense to have BOTH Everchosen and Slaves to Darkness. I'd prefer one sub-faction with Chaos Undivided potential.

TBH though GW needs to do some serious work on the Chaos factions. There is major potential here. E.g. we have Tzaangors why don't we have Pestigors (as a unique unit).  And we have growing confusion around the Dark Oath.

So the lesson here is: keep your receipt in the boxes until you actually build the models.

The only time I had an experience like this was about 3 years ago was when  my wife bought me Smaug as a birthday present.  It took me a few weeks to check everything in the kit but luckily she had kept the receipt because I found a major miscast in the resin neck piece.

It took literally 1 phone call to GW and a scan of the receipt, and we threw in a photo of the miscast piece (without being asked) and they sent it within 10 days.

They are slow to paint, yes, but you can make a few shortcuts by spraying the girls white so you can just dilute some Reikland Fleshshade with Lahmian medium, paint that on skin, then Flayed One Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh highlights. The harder parts are the bikinis and jewellery, but washes hide some of the imperfections. Stabby snakes are perhaps the easiest to paint.

You definitely need a carry case for these models. Morathi's left small wing is brittle, right one is under hair + makes up her back. The big snake's wings are solid, as the parts are connected to the ribs, back (and each other), as well as to the hips, so there are many glue points. The biggest worry for carrying your Daughters around is actually that Cauldron with the Avatar standing on top. Magnetize the leader+Avatar, maybe even the shrine keepers. I don't own any Khinerai yet, so not sure about their brittleness.

This. But if you've got an airbrush the skin is a bit easier. Smooth coats from an airbrush with pin-washing does a good job on the skin. Mind you if you don't have an airbrush it's a heck of an investment for one army :)

The most fragile stuff are the Khinerai.  It's all down to their tails being what connects them to the bases. I've kept them as GW intended but I've seen some good conversions that use scenery to add stability. You can see some here:

For the Darkoath, I really dig the dog and absolutely hate everything else. It looks like Franzetta barbarians met an anime hair and weapon designer.

That's what both the Warqueen and Chieftain look like too, and honestly I kind alike it :P

Yeah, Colin's build is super powerful. The issue with it is that it's optimized for the current rules (90 witches, 2 or 3 Hags, and Hagg Nar). It relies on everything likely to be nerfed.

  19. A pity about the lack of DoK but given Season 2's theme I kinda get it. Overall I'm happy with the warbands that were revealed. Not just for Underworlds but for AOS proper! There's also an interesting thing with the Order releases (excluding the storm casts) we had Fyrelayers last season and we'll get Sylvaneth and KO this season. Unless I'm mistaken that's the exact order that they were released in for AOS. The same with the Choas God warbands, we had Khorne last season and Tzeentch this one. If this is right then we should get DOK and Idoneth, along with Nurgle in Season 3.
