I had heard a rumour that gw wasn’t planning to support terrain going forward...

Terrain is a funny one. One of the secrets of terrain collecting is that you don't actually need that much. A collection of some trees and ruins is pretty much all you need. However, even a single piece of characterful terrain can make a game go from good to truely memorable. You only need to see the Warhammer World dioramas to see what a difference it can make.

The terrain sets that have been coming out of GW have been outstanding. I'm not against faction terrain being implemented in some other way. Seeing armies fighting over beautiful terrain in shop windows is a powerful recruiting tool. You also surrender the look of your setting to third party manufacturers if you don't do terrain.

  2. I'm working on the terrain from Heart of Ghur. I got the trees finished, including one extra from Sundered Fate that I assembled without the marshwood platform:

Next, I finished five of the smaller obstacles from the set:

I am currently working on the rope bridges. (And yes, the binding on the marshwood takes forever to paint!!!)

AoS for me but my group unfortunately plays a lot less often since third ed… the rule additions didn‘t get received well at all. ☹️

Warcry would interest me but we tried Killteam and its rules suck hard IMO, which killed any ambition to try Warcry despite it apparently having the best rules out of any GW game. Well, maybe I‘ll have more luck in the future…

I haven't played Killteam but I have found Warcry super fun. I love it and recommend it.

  4. In the days of early AoS, I was the first of my gaming group to have that 'I get it' moment with Age of Sigmar and realise how awesome it was. I purchased the old Skirmish book and Path to Glory book and focused my hobby efforts on these modes to try and make it easier for my group to try this new game. I ended up playing through the Skirmish campaign playing Freeguild vs Tomb Kings and having a lot of fun with it.

It wasn't until a friend was starting a brand new Skaven army and needed a game he could play with the models he had finished did I go and try second edition Warcry. Wow, it blew me away. One of the best designed games Games Workshop have ever made. So clean, easy to learn and so much fun.

I am all-in with Warcry at the moment, I've just finished the large terrain pieces from Heart of Ghur and having heaps of fun with it. When my friend's Skaven army is ready, I may switch back to Age of Sigmar Path to Glory as my main game with Warcry a close second.

Great to see so many Warcry players in this poll. Shout out to you all.

  5. No. The headline army should definitely stay Stormcast Eternals. My five year old son can knock out a new Stormcast model on a Saturday and his models look great. These models had him painting before he could read. Us old folk might prefer other ranges like Cities but for bringing new people into the hobby - that’s something Age of Sigmar got right from day one.

  6. Oh dear. Yes, Heart of Ghur was twice the price but it had four times the amount of models that were all brand new sculpts. It also had a quality cardboard game board, the FULL core book and all that gorgeous, gorgeous Gnarlwood terrain.

At least the underworlds miniatures they have included in the new starter are incredible models. Those vampires in particular are stunningly good.

It also doesnt have the cardboard map but a paper one.

The Warcry starter set does come with one of those nice thick cardboard folding ones, according to the product description on the GW web store. At least that’s something.

Edit: Seems like even the GW webstore team can't believe it doesn't come with a cardboard game board. As Gitzdee pointed out, it's indeed just a folded paper playing surface...

  8. Concur with what was said earlier. Too short, needed another act. The first section was great though. Loved the Nurgle vs Flesh Eater Courts story, gripping stuff. Second section in Hammerhal Aqsha was good but didn’t quite hit the same heights as the first. Presentation is terrific throughout with glorious art and photographs. Was a fairly pricey book though, not sure if the value is quite there. Did enjoy it and it did set things up for an exciting series. Hopefully book 2 is more substantial.

Almost 100% temporary. It's a very recent model (2021?) and there's really no reason why they would be replacing him in the near future.

The web store occasionally has errors where temporarily out of stock items come up as no longer available. Given Sigvald is quite new and part of the main Age of Sigmar range, I’d guess he is just out of stock.

  10. We don’t really want the game to stand still. New models and armies and background keep the game exciting and alive. Eventually, our new models become old and then finally get updated or slip into the shadows. Age of Sigmar has a rolling time line. Armies have changed in the 120 years since the Realmgate wars and will continue to do so.

I have played Age of Sigmar campaigns against the Tomb Kings and Sons of the Breton. I plan to continue playing with my old Empire models, standing in for the new models.

I get the sad feelings, I really do. I just try and stay as positive as possible and remember that renewal is important for the health of the game.

  11. When those vampires came out, I remember thinking they were some of the best models citadel had ever done let alone best push fit models. As mentioned in the rumour thread, you don't get enough models out of the box for a standard game of Warcry. I bought Heart of Ghur and Sundered Fate but have no plans to paint any of the included war bands, (I play Cities). I bought those games for the scenery, rules and tokens. I don't have a problem with this set not including two standard warbands if it keeps the price low.

Good to see a full card playing surface rather than a paper ones too. Others have mentioned the lack of climbable terrain. I also don't have a problem with this. I started playing Warcry 2nd Edition using the terrain I already had in my collection. Games were thrilling even without all the fancy rope bridges and platforms. Hopefully, this set will help others discover this gem of a game.

Edit: Gitzdee pointed out to me that it is a paper playing surface, (oh dear...)

  12. A new starter set is on its way! Unlike last year's lavish Heart of Ghur box set, they have gone for a low price point introductory set. I found the tokens in Heart of Ghur essential for a good play experience. Those who jumped in after the box set sold out had to deal with the next THREE box sets not having the necessary tokens (🤦‍♂️).

I think this set is great if the price is right. I also think the Underworlds war bands are perfect for Warcry and I am all for seeing more of them in the game. I do hope the core rules stay unchanged - they are just that good.
