  1. I really like the idea of a unit of 30 rangers, but haven't been able to fit so many WWR into a list. I've had some success with a unit of just 10 rangers personally (was able to kill a Stardrake for the first time in my last game). Between Blessing of Life, Shield of Thorns, and the Waywatcher's 'See but do not be seen' command ability we have some tools to protect them. Don't forget that although Shield of Thorns lost some of it's mortal wound punch with the Mystic Shield nerf, it's now just a much, much better version of Mystic Shield that casts on the same value; imho Shield of Thorns is currently one of the best defensive spells in the game (which thanks to the strength of mixed order lists is the reason Sisters of the Thorn are still 220 points).

Can you make pile-in move while fortress of boughs is activated?

Because a pile-in is indeed classified as a move and the Fortress of Boughs ability states the unit cannot move while the ability is active, alas you cannot.

  3. True, Grand Alliance: Order does mention that Alarielle and the Sylvaneth see the Wanderers as "divorced from nature," which does sound like a pretty big diss among nature loving types. However, the Sylvaneth section of that same book details how the Sylvaneth in general "remain distrustful of any not of their kind" and that the Wanderers "are seen as estranged cousins" (page 85 of GA: Order). If you thought the Sylvaneth 'rejection' of the Wanderers was harsh, you should hear what they think of humans and dwarves! There being a certain level of distrust (IE "rift") between the aelves of the wood and the forest spirits is something that goes way way back to the world-that-was from what I understand.

The new fluff from the Core Book confirms that whatever the nature of the "rift" between Alarielle and the Wanderers, they were nevertheless close allies at the beginning of the War of Life ('Swathe Nations At War' p94), and that it was only after "abandoning Ghyran to the infestations of Nurgle and hence leaving the people of the Everqueen to their plight" that they "[had] broken a long-standing alliance that will take lifetimes to rebuild" ('The Wanderers' p143).

Alarielle lived and fought alongside the Wanderers until many of those aelves abandoned her, whereas Teclis tried to destroy the Idoneth outright after creating them and they fled. I would argue that their relationships with their respective gods are quite different.

This is not to say that similarities don't exist, or that Wanderers and Idoneth don't have many fluff-based reasons to ally together. Moreover, unlikely allies make for a fantastic narrative hook and gives you a jumping off point for the story of your army. For example, if you decide to take Drycha as an ally (in any army, because she hates EVERYONE), you suddenly have to explain from a narrative perspective why she would fight alongside non-sylvaneth 'scum.' And thus a story almost immediately writes itself in the explaining thereof (maybe Drycha is using the non-sylvaneth as pawns in her genocidal game, maybe she was ordered to fight alongside them by Alarielle herself but is ready to turn on them at any moment, etc).

Again, not to say I think Idoneth make particularly unlikely allies for Wanderers (I don't), but you do have some explaining to do when you ally in soul thieves into your army (but the explanation itself is an opportunity for good storytelling). I imagine it goes something like this in it's most basic form - 'Hey Idoneth, don't steal our children, come fight with us and we'll totally get you some souls broh... but seriously, stay away from our children...' ?

    Wanderers were rejected by Alarielle

Source? My impression is that many Wanderers decided to abandon her and Ghyran to it's fate, not the other way around. I feel that the Wanderers reconciling with Alarielle is far more likely than the Idoneth reconciling with Teclis, in fact we know that many Wanderers live within Alarielle's Living City with her blessing.

    Nomad Prince

    Spell Weaver

    3x Way Watcher

    1x10 Wild Riders

    1x5 Sisters of the Thorn

    1x20 Eternal Guard

    2x20 Glade Guard

    1x Sisters of the Watch

    Battalion: Waystone Pathfinder

    Total: 2000.

I believe you are short one unit. You have your five heroes and 2 units of cavalry, but then you need 4 units of your choice of Sisters of the Watch, Glade Guard, Wildwood Rangers, and Eternal Guard. You have only three - break the unit of 20 Eternal Guard into two units of 10 for example and you should be good to go! Edit: whoops, didn't see the 2x on Glade Guard... :)

Here's a rule question that came up in my first AoS 2.0 game - the Waystone Pathfinders Defensive Volley ability lets you choose a unit within 12" of the Nomad Prince and all units in the battalion can make a shooting attack against that unit as if it were the shooting phase. Do y'all think this overrides the core rules? If one of your units is within 3 inches of an enemy unit can it shoot 'out of combat' to target a different unit that has been selected for a Defensive Volley?

Am I the only one who doesn't feel like allying with the deepkin at all due to not matching that well on both aesthetic and lore level?

    You're not alone :)

Personally I don't feel very motivated to take any allies at all, I got into Age of Sigmar to play Wood Elves Wanderers, and that's what I intend to do!

  6. I feel like Wild Riders still aren't cheap enough for what they do, but I'll try to run them in the new edition nevertheless. They are an excellent target for the Spellweaver's Blessing of Life and have excellent bravery. I think you might want a unit of 10 to give them enough power to do want you want them to do - charge support heroes and ranged units. We're losing quite a bit of our mobility with the change to Realm Wanderers, and their ability to run and charge can offset that a bit. Having them in your Waystone Pathfinders battalion will let them start the game from any board edge - super useful for putting them in a flanking position.

Emerald lifeswarm seems ok with high value 1 wound models... like sisters.

I really thought I was going to use the Lifeswarm, more for flavor reasons than almost anything else, but at 60 points I'm going to have trouble fitting it in my lists. I understand they wanted to price healing at a premium, but it just doesn't quite do enough to justify being one of the most expensive endless spells. The Aethervoid pendulum will perhaps prove to be the best endless spell - even if your opponent gets to move it they can't move it backwards towards you and it deals the big d6 wounds, all at 20 points less the the Lifeswarm. Sure, they perform very different functions but it's hard to overlook the disparity in point efficiency.

I still think I will find a way to fit it in a list and field it, looks fun to paint and everything. Combine with the Spellweaver's Blessing of Life to bring back 2d3 slain Sisters of the Watch per turn, as you say, and laugh maniacally.

  8. The Soulsnare Shackles seems like a very strong option for almost any army at only 20 points. Wanderers can use their mobile wizards - the Sisters of the Thorn with their 12"+d6 move or a Spellweaver using the Realm Wanderers ability - to get down field and then throw the shackles in the midst of the opponents' army, slowing them down and keeping them away from our squishy archers. Its big downfall is that they shackles are relatively easy to dispel, but that means the opponent has 'wasted' a spell to do so or else have their army move at a snail's pace.

we really need something to replace Arcane bolt and Mystic shield

I get that it doesn't 'replace' it because we were already casting it, but Shield of Thorns is the same casting value as mystic shield and it rerolls all saves and it can also cause mortal wounds to boot. I think 'as is' mystic shield will still be quite useful at times. I think the endless spells will fill this void for the most part, as you'll likely be using some of your spell casting attempts to dispel your opponents endless spells as well as using some casting attempts to throw your own out there. Unfortunately most of the talk I've heard here locally is that many folk won't want to use the realm rules and spells - too 'unbalanced.' :(

You would need Korhils model after its quite impossible getting a nice one handed axe for a generic Aelf Model and second

Very cool! I like this idea! Just wanted to chime in quickly and mention that if you can't get a Korhil model, the Eternal Guard/Wildwood Rangers kit comes with a one handed axe intended for the Wildwood Ranger champion. If you're looking for an aelven one-handed axe it's a good option imho:

Could be onto something here, I think. Short range, but with rend and 3+ or even 2+ to wound?

white lioness riders that trade power for speed?

Now we're talking! Lion cavalry! I've seen some really cool conversions where people have put the Sisters of the Thorn onto wolves to great effect, and I think the same could done with lions.

    40K exodites

Is this a thing? Have they been an army in the past? Most 40k isn't my bag but from the bit of reading I've done on the fluff this would definitely be my army if it was a thing!

Is there any chance this could be for LOTR? Any rumor engine precedent for that? They do seem to be rebranding it to the "Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game" with next month's 'Battle Companies' book, maybe some more LOTR in the pipeline?

I do think it's most likely AoS though. Now this just has to be aelves this time, right? You know what they say about broken clocks. Or I am just a broken record?

  11. Looks like Frontline Gaming has posted all the Firestorm allegiance abilities and allegiance compositions in an article on their site: https://www.frontlinegaming.org/2017/09/23/overview-season-of-war-firestorm/

It appears 'the only limitation is that you cannot choose named characters to be in these allegiances.'

Fist of the Everchosen ability seems pretty good - "Failure is not an option: +2 Bravery and reroll failed charges for units within 6″ of a friendly hero."

  12. Anyone else notice this? The Warhammer Community announcement post said "Firestorm comes with 10 new allegiance abilities representing the unique armies of the Great Cities and those who would tear them down." But now that it's listed for preorder on the webstore for certain countries, Firestorms product description reads "There are also 9 sets of Allegiance Abilities for use in the campaign – 6 of these represent the major Sigmarite cities found on the map, with one each for the forces of Death, Destruction and Chaos. These include battle traits, command traits and artifacts of power for your armies to use."

Only nine allegiances then? Phoenicium allegiance got axed? It's not listed among the nine Firestorm allegiances you can sort models by, despite the Community announcement mentioning them by name: "The new allegiance abilities are designed to represent how these cities fight; the forces of the Phonecium, for instance, are inspired to fight harder by the deaths of their comrades, honouring the Ur-Phoenix..."

Also the new allegiances do actually include command traits and artifacts and can be used in tandem with another set of allegiance abilities? I thought it was just a single battletrait for each and that was it, huh.

Looks like Greywater Fastness is likely to get warmachines that shoot in the hero phase.

Fyi you can check my post history and my army's been from there since the Season of War campaign. The rest of you are the people that piggybacked Iron Warriors when they got to take a Basilisk and nine Obliterators. ;)

Now that the webstore lets you sort models by Season of War: Firestorm allegiance (thanks @DinoTitanedition!) it looks like the factions for Greywater Fastness are Stormcast, Ironweld Arsenal, Free People, Collegiate Arcane, and Wanderers. I would have really expected Dispossessed instead of Wanderers myself, just based on the couple paragraphs of lore from the first Season of War release. Especially the bit where "trees were felled by the hundred, and the region's resources were plundered to fuel the lightning-fast growth growth of the Greywater Fastness. The children of Alarielle looked on in horror at this rapacious industry, some even coming to blows with their erstwhile allies in their sorrow and anger." And the Eldritch Council are mentioned by name in the fluff on the same page but are also notably absent. It almost seems as if the factions for each allegiance might have been chosen more for rule-writing reasons than for lore reasons, and if that's true maybe including Wanderers means the allegiance will allow not just warmachines but all units a chance to shoot in the hero phase? I think  the jury is clearly still out on how people feel about all these new allegiances for matched play, but what has me most excited for Firestorm is the potential for a bit more background on the mortal forces of AoS.

I noticed that nine Firestorm allegiances are available to sort models by on the GW webstore right now, but ten were mentioned in the Community post. Think the Phoenicium is the absentee here.

Trying to find out what size base a Frostheart Phoenix should be on, anyone know? There isn't an official round base and it's a bit smaller than a dragon. Hoping something like an 80mm round is the right size.

There's a couple pictures of Phoenixes in the Grand Alliance Order book, and on the back cover it even has a Frostheart Phoenix right beside an Archmage on Dragon. They definitely use oval bases in those pictures and it does look to be the same size base they used for the dragon (I think 70x105mm?), but it's a little hard to determine the base sizes of the different models exactly because someone at GW sure loves to use their fog machine.

So glad that she does not have the pistol.

Can't see a pistol on her model from the angles we've seen, but according to the Blightwar post on Warhammer Community she will have a pistol in her rules for sure: "Armed with Whirlwind Axes, Neave can cut down characters in a flurry of blows, or she can weaken them at range with her Boltstorm Pistol – she’s a powerful new option for any Stormcast Eternals army."

Also the does not sport the lion head and tattered cape like I expected, so another thing to look forward to.

I know the 40k release schedule is looking packed, but I think 2017 isn't done with AoS just yet. They'll want to ride the momentum of this new GHB almost as surely as they want to keep momentum up for 40k 8th ed. The long rumored new aelves are sure to show themselves 'soon,' even if they do end up being 'just' a Shadespire expansion.

I just don't think that the Empire look fits AoS.

Personally I think it does and the fact they are on round bases now means you can see all the lovely detail of the models! I see the AOS setting as a place of almost infinite possibilities, so I think having the Empire models as Free Guild works well.

This, this, and this! If each of the mortal realms are individually larger than the entire planet that was the old world, how can there be just one 'look' to the setting of AoS? There's room for literally thousands of unique cultures, who's to say at least one of them might resemble the old empire? Especially the ones who built their civilization under the shadow and with the guidance of nostalgic ol' Sigmar, and potentially in his image? History repeats itself, and the Warhammer world is cyclical, no? I understand the desire for a more 'AoS-ish' human faction though.

The changes to the Rogue Idol scroll are very interesting. Love the rewrite of the 'halve damage' rule for clarification. Didn't the 'Spirit of the Waaagh' rule previously give the ability to run+charge, but had the caveat of 'this unit must charge if able?'

Will definitely be looking to get that special edition GHB, however I am ever-so-slightly disappointed that the book itself seems to be the same with no new special edition cover art or such. All those doodads it comes with should be worth it though!

  17. Still no further details/pictures/price on special edition of GHB 2017?

"For the truly dedicated, the Warlords Edition of the General’s Handbook is packed with extras that’ll help you with your games. As well as cards for every Battleplan in the book, you’ll be able to get your hands on turn trackers, tokens and more – you’ll be perfectly equipped for a new age of gaming in the Mortal Realms."

Makes sense. My guess is it goes up for pre-order the 19th, otherwise it's actually release day would fall into September right?
