The problem, imo, is that they werent presented in TOW articles. They were TOW articles:

The Old World: Ice Guard of Kislev - Warhammer Community (warhammer-community.com)

This deffo confirms to me the change in the direction half way through the project. If you knew from the beginning that you are not launching them, you post it as a TOW article, like the latest one with the new content, not as a TOW article.

Agreed. To me it seemed obvious at the time so the Kislev stuff was assisting on WarCom that the intention was for Kislev to be released fairly early in TOW's life. I would be amazed if the 3d models for at least some of a potential Kislev range haven't already been done.

Something changed. My guess is GW got cold feet and decided to scale back TOW fur gear that it wouldn't be as popular as they'd originally hoped*. My how is sales have been good enough that they're recognising it has legs, and we'll see things like Kislev and Cathay in due course.

In any case my strategy doesn't change: I enjoy TOW and buy products to support it, going that doing so will increase the odds of longer term support. I would love a TOW 2.0 (like Heresy) with more supported factions, new minis for existing factions etc., but that will only happen if the game sells well.

*Might not help that TWW3 has not been as popular as TWW2 was, and with that enthusiasm online started to dry up

This is not really a character but it kinda is. Does anyone know whats up with the Crown of Sorcery? I love the bits with Azhag the Slaughterer and while i dont think we will be seeing him could we be seeing someone else wearing this thing. I like what a Necromancer in other factions that are not known for that kind of magic like the orruks could bring us. I also noticed quite a few important AoS characters have worn the crown. Last thing i remember reading is that it was stored in a vault? Please correct me if im wrong.

Huh, I would have assumed Nagash reclaimed it during the End Times, but I can't find any reference to that. Somewhat surprising to me.

  3. Received my job lot of Dark Elves yesterday. Now I've got to decide how to build them, starting with the basic Warriors.

My feeling is that Bleakswords aren't worth it compared to Dreadspears in TOW (which is great as spears look more like proper weapons of war than one handed swords). The question is how many Darkshards did I build out of my 60 warriors, and his many Dreadspears?

Don't know, but I really find it disappointing not to at least release the foot knights for people with unbuilt knights to convert them.

It's such a no brainer to do isn't it. Even something as simple as using foot knight heads on old mounted knights will add a lot. Go a step further and you could go a long way to making the old kits feel fresh.

I'm a bit confused about Drilled.

If one of your units is in Marching Column, after declaring their charge target, can they redress the ranks to allow a charge move?

Looks that way to me. Drilled seems to be a pretty powerful ability.

I’n guessing they didn’t think through it or forgot that the daughter of khaines come with two weapons.

it’s kinda similar to the skaven rule.

we’ve got a rule where we basically can add bravery for each rank of models we have to our bravery, which is something we had in 8th edition as well.

just this time they kinda forgot to give that special rule to any skaven unit.

Yep, sounds likely. Probably not helped by both Dark Elves and Skaven being legacy lists and therefore likely receiving less editing passes.

Personally I think we should play those rules as we think it was intended, of course that would mean you would have to ask and tel your opponent first what the problem is.

if that has been dealt with using the rules as we think it was intended should be fine

especially at friendly games, at an event it might be worth asking the to what his opinion is on that

    Completely agree.

Whats unclear about the rule? its the same with ithilmar weapon for high elves, ensorcelled weapons for chaos or warpstone weapons for skaven, or khopesh for khemri etc.

It's not unclear how it works, it's unclear why a rule that specifically calls out Khainites, and is only on the four explicitly Khainites units (plus characters), does not actually do anything in any of those units unless you make a conscious decision to avoid using their signature weapons.

Unless you think it's likely the rules writers thought it was a good idea to dedicate space in the list to a rule that essentially does nothing, the only conclusion is that it's an oversight. Most likely is they copy pasted the wording of the rules from something like Ithilmar weapons, but forgot to change the party about only applying to hand weapons.

I personally hate rerolls on atacks or saves. Its still a "roll a dice" game. Removing randomness is stupid.

Rerolls don't remove randomness, they change the probabilities involved: 4+ with a reroll can still fail.

There are good arguments against rerolls (namely they slow play down) but removing randomness does not seem to be one. You might as well say "I hate it when characters wound on a 2+ as it removes randomness from the game, everyone should always wound in a 4+".

What about Krondys/ Karazai? It is way bigger, but also quite cheap to get with Hachette, and it has a look closer to High Elves with its armour from Krondys, imo.

I doubt they'd fit on any of the appropriate bases. They're on the 160mm big pie plate in AoS whereas the High Elf dragons are on 60x100mm bases. Even on the largest square base (100x150mm) I think you might struggle to fit them.

I keep looking at Ionus and thinking I can use his for a high elf dragon with a bit of conversion work. I'll need to watch that video.

I think it is a great basis for any of the elf dragons. It can be a Chaos or Zombie Dragon too, but those both require a bit more work (two heads, or some sign of decay).

    It's a gorgeous mini.

Is there a consensus yet on how to handle Murderous?

At the moment it seems to be near useless. I believe all models in the game are considered to have a single hand weapon in addition to whatever else they have, so your Witch Elves could choose to use than instead of their additional hand weapons if you really want to use the rule; and all characters seem to have it so any character you leave with just a hand weapon will benefit from it (yay for Sorceresses in combat I guess).

I think it either ought to extend to additional hand weapons as well, or apply regardless of the weapon you're using (like Choppas). The former let's Witch Elves benefit, which kinda makes sense, the latter let's Executioners benefit (the only non-Witch Elf non-characters with it).

My concern is, Dark Elves being a legacy list, GW will not feel the need to issue FAQs for them.

EDIT: personally I think it should apply to all non-magical weapons. It fits Witch Elves thematically, and buffs Executioners (who I think are a little worse than Black Guard at the moment). Maybe remove it from all characters apart from Death Hags, Assassins and nobles to balance it out a bit (is there any reason Beastmasters or Sorceresses should have it? They aren't associated with the Cult of Khaine. Only reason I leave it on nobles is they could be Khainites. Maybe make them pay for it as an upgrade?)

Anyone know how the new Slaves to Darkness models look/compare on squares and in blocks?

There's a couple of people who've ranked them up on Reddit, and to my eye at least they look great (it helps that Chaos aren't supposed to be well ordered ranks of drilled soldiers, so being a bit less neat suits them well). Just go slow and steady when basing them us as they do require some careful position. Even Chosen seem to rank up well (their lack of cloaks helps).

Chaos Knights are a little trickier: mediocre hobbies has a video where he ranks up five, but it does involve clipping a bit of cloak off the banner bearer.

Pete the wargamer made an incredible high elves dragon conversion out of the new stormcast dragon.

i think with some slight body changes, the same could be done for the dark elves

I saw his Chaos Dragon, which looked great but took a little more work than I think I'm capable of right now (he gave it two heads using, I think, Hydra heads). Any link to his high elves one? I figure that, with just one head, it should be relatively easy.

  13. Well, looks like I'm building a Dark Elf army after buying a pretty large job lot of new in box kits on eBay (including, fit some reason, a single Lumineth character). Bare bones it's about 3400 points, but with upgrades etc. it's probably over 4000 points.

Got to say I'm really excited, even though they are a legacy faction. I think Ionus will be donating his dragon to the army (it includes a black dragon, but I'm not a big fan of the mini).

The real reason is likely GW not wanting for TWW to step on the toes of AoS: Realms of Ruin.

I'd say it's broader: they want to keep the Old World and the Mortal Realms separated. It's the same reason the more up to date factions in AoS were only included as legacy factions in TOW and why older minis are going to be sold on AoS even when they have new versions available in AoS.

Tzaangors have been a well established part of the lore since the Lost and the Damned book.

Checks copy of Lost and the Damned. Huh, What's that on page 133, is it a beaked beastman? Why yes it is.

And on page 137 we have a Khorne marked beastman which has a hound's face, something the blurb about khorngors explicitly calls out.

The idea that GW lore is this well established, concrete thing that they've never changed is nonsense. GW have always been very flexible with their lore and very free about changing it. If GW were being truly honest to their oldest lore about beastmen, a very large proportion of them should have one or more mutations (and all Tzaangors should), and about half should be bull hybrids rather than goat hybrids.

But, as mentioned, GW changes they're lore happily, and beastmen essentially became goat only, with the vast majority not being mutated beyond the standard goat/human hybrid. GW could quite happily greenlit CA's beaked design, and if have preferred it if they did. You wouldn't, and that's fine, but please don't tell me (and others) that we're wrong because the unchanging lore doesn't support it, because honestly, the original lore doesn't support current beastmen either.

The Bret exiles seem very popular, I wonder if it's because they offer so much room to be creative and put your own spin on things.

It offers some really interesting hobby opportunities. Like, these are presumably the less traditional Bretonnians, and they might be in a part of the world that puts them in contact with a lot of other cultures (the Border Princes for example), so perhaps some if your knights gave adopted the armour or style of those cultures. Bretonnians wearing bits and pieces of Empire armour for example.

Dwarfs! Completely new project (I never had any WFB miniatures).

I've been very tempted to pick up some of the existing AoS dwarf stuff that is suitable for WHFB. I had a Dwarf army in 6th edition, and always liked their aesthetic.

What armies are people working on?

Warriors of Chaos, using almost entirely new AoS sculpts (technically a handful are old WHFB I guess).

My old 6th edition stuff has long ago disappeared sadly. Got back into the hobby in 2021.

  19. Add me to the pile of people who find characters mostly disappointing in AoS. I used to spend hours coming up with a back story for my heroes in WHFB, picking out magic items, thinking about which units were their personal retinues etc.

I just don't find I can do the same in AoS. If I take a Chaos Lord he is the exact same as every other Chaos Lord barring an artefact choice (which is often a no brainer between a good option and some bad ones), he then gets shot off the table, or hits like a wet noodle, and I just don't feel it. I can invest in my characters in AoS.

Don't get me wrong, I do like AoS as a game, it's just a very different play experience to WHFB. AoS feels more like a pure game, whereas WHFB has more of the roleplay influences that were very obvious in early GW games.

They do that quite often, they don't sell online, wait until everyone sells out then put stuff online at full price.

You can still get some of the Xmas battleforces, again at full price.

In this case, they are offering their usual 15% discount on the TOW books, which is as good or even better than a lot of other 3rd party sellers are/were.

Thanks, this has saved me from Wayland Games back-order purgatory at last

Glad I could help. I cancelled my WG order at the weekend, deciding if just order them if/when they became available again. Only reason I checked EG today was to see if they had a discount on 30mm bases (I was in Warhammer World and weighing up whether to buy them the or not) and what do you know, they have stock.

My guess is their decision not to do online orders initially might have allowed them to build stock where others didn't, and now they feel comfortable selling online again.

  22. Has anyone managed to base the new Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount for TOW yet? I am a bit nervous about getting him to fit, even on the 50x75mm option. I really wanted to find a way to fit him on a 40x60mm base for the ease of ranking him up with knights, but having seen his much bigger his horse is than Chaos Knights (who are already pretty tight on 30x60mm bases) I'm fairly certain that'd be impossible.
