I had to read the text twice too. They talk about the Phoenix on the shield.

As quoted above by Whitefang, they definitely talk about the banner, "fluttering banner". As you say correctly, they also talk about the shield, which has another Phoenix design, and is included in the picture with several close-ups above the banner picture. And the rumour engine piece also has a Phoenix design.

Seems like a "Light Phoenix" is incoming, and the dragons are reserved for Malerion. Especially as the Phoenix is connected to Tyrion in the text.

    Edit:

    Also - it's hammer time?

  2. No new art, but the models look great. I love that you can adjust the angle of the lances.

The phoenix was a bit surprising for me. When I first saw the banner and some of the symbols I thought these depict dragons. But then, in the Order of the Phoenix Temple section in COS it says that the Anointed have to do a pilgrimage to Hysh to an ashen area where a god-beast phoenix lives (or something along those lines, I don't have the book with me right now, might not be a god-beast).

So there might be some special light phoenixes in the line for the Lumineth. Especially as those seem to look different from the phoenixes we have seen so far. And likely associated with Tyrion from how it's written in the article. But that could mean - no dragons for the Lumineth.

The rumour engine and box pictures - they also show a phoenix on top and the mountain/river rune. Could it be that the Lumineth get 2 or 4 scenery pieces like that, with different rune combinations (so far we always have seen them in pairs (mountain/river & zenith/wind)) which provide different magical bonuses? E.g. you plant your Mountain/River monolith where you want a strong defense, and your zenith/wind one where you want strong attack (or maybe increased movement or)?

And this time they didn't even give a hint what comes next "shakes fist". Not very illuminating for the Lumineth.

  3. @Tiberius501I'm still excited. Like you I'm looking forward for hopefully new art. So far I loved both of the Wardens, especially the "Zenith" one. Maybe we even get a bit of new lore (what the names mean for example) or "gasp" in small insight into their mechanics.

I have exactly the same assumption about what next time's article will be about. Or archers, as they already have given us the name, and it would make the old troika of base units complete.

I was bored and made a small chart to compare the Runes on the Vanari Auralan Warden Shields with the old High Elven Runes out of the "Uniforms and Heraldy of the High Elves" Book. I hope it works for you - I could not find a reasonable way to display the chart directly in the forums.
Edit: Yeah I didnt think of a PDF - good point. :)
Fun Fact: If you Switch the Rune "Yngra - Rescue, Inprisonment" upside down it becomes "Denla - Freedom, fulfilment, epmtiness". 😁

Yeah I also was amazed at the "Twins" Rune - it is sooo lovely! 🥰
Sad that two of the Runes mean "War without end" ... ;(

    Great, really interesting.

  5. In Wrath of the Everchosen it says that indeed Chaos forces hold all Realmgates on both sides, except for Aqshy, Ghyran and Ghur. That would be my guess, that the Lumineth attack (and gain) the gate on their side in their Battletome. The Gate Armies were great.

Probably they won’t go into the relationship between Tyrion and Alarielle. But that would also be interesting... .

    • Thanks 1
  6. Very interesting. I didn’t think about Destruction or Death at all. Would be funny if we all think Chaos is the boss in Hysh, but they’d been wiped out by some Orks there long time ago. We know so little about Hysh anything is possible (I think Chaos is more likely though).

One of my friends couldn’t be happier if he’d splash my shiny elves with some new Soulblight forces. In Malign Sorcery we heard that Teclis was able to lessen the effects of the Necroquake by building a huge aerherquartz tower (Tower of Prios), but we don’t know how effective that was.

Edit: exactly I really hope that at least for a while we get some expansive Lumineth, just to differentiate things from before. I wonder though - with all the broken buildings stuff they have on their bases, if we won’t get Lumineth fighting for their existence again. Could be also symbolic in the sense of - reborn from the past, but makes me a bit worried.

while I agree that they will probably show him and hopefully all the LRL mages some love... hopefully making him on par casting wise to Nagash at least. this is the company that talks about how eldar weapons melt all armor, flesh and harness the power of stars.... but then they give them in game 5+ to wound and AP5 weapons... sorry not to be a negative nancy, I am sure GW will give the LRL the love they deserve. and I feel like GW has gotten a lot better over the last few years in general. It's Just sometimes the company is not good at matching fluff to game play or vise versa.

Sure, always could go wrong. I’d preferred it, if Teclis would have not had a mount/sidekick for that reason. Still, I’m optimistic, because he was often strong in previous iterations.

Because Koradrel Mentioned above, how do does everyone think the Lumineth will be connected to the broader storyline and other realms?

Obvious one would be Slaanesh: Get’s free, here is your box - LRL vs HOS. But it doesn’t look like they went with that one.

Another one could be that Katakros rampage through Eightpoints and Archaon’s attack on them provoked them to go on the offense. Archaon still controls the Realmgate between Hysh and Eightpoints.

Or GW goes with something totally different.

So far they also have found a way to have new factions being present in most of the Realms. Not sure how they’d pull that one off with the Lumineth, besides them expanding now. Or will they just be in Hysh?

And then there is the thing with how they interact with other Order factions. Relations with the Idoneth could be a bit awkward. And Teclis could still be pissed that Sigmar has turned his Enlightenment Machines into the complete opposite (and on top of that with the help of a dwarf...). But then Teclis might have had so much aetherquartz over the millennia that he is colder than frozen moonlight now, his art looks a bit like that.

  8. Oh dice. Interesting. On the other hand, we know now that they’ll likely show us in 2 weeks, the dice and the fluff behind the numbers on them 🤪

Teclis - that would be probably the only thing which would prevent me from buying the Lumineth, if Teclis and the mages aren’t good casters in the end. I think he will be though. Agree with Korardel here, he was good for a long time in WHFB, they called him here Mage God and what not, it would be strange if he wasn’t a strong mage in the end after all that.

  9. I've waited 3 years for the re-done high elves, so for me it's not that bad to wait a few more month, as I'm not interested in buying new dark elves (although I haven't seen them so who knows).

I agree though with Thiagoma, it would be great to get at least some information on how all the fluff is implemented into mechanics.  Some concrete stuff to start a bit of mind gaming.

In a way, this is the best of times, because of all the possibilities (Tyrion, dragons, cool monsters, angel-elves, ghost elves etc.). In the end some of us will eventually not get 100% what they wanted.

I don't think we get Malerion soon, another order army (if not something went really awry in Ulgu) so soon after the Lumineth? And on top of this another Aelf army? He wasn't even mentioned in the new Archaon book, although there would have been an obvious place where there'd be some Malerion aelves fighting together with the Lumineth.

Eventually we'll get them, I'm sure, but probably will take a while.

  10. On the other hand ... almost two weeks gone since the last one, we are getting there. But yeah, when I saw on the last article that the next one is only about the Dawnriders, that was a bit disappointing. At least we might get to see a new piece of art, so far every article had one of those. And there might be some tidbits in there which get us  really excited again for a few days  :) . The flaring sunmetal spears did that for me last time. What a great image.

But I really hope after the Dawnriders, they show us a new unit. At least the archers maybe? But it's possible they go with Eltharion and Teclis until Adepticon.

(while I'm writing this my mind is going showusthemagesnow, showusthemagesnow, showusthemagesnow,  showusthemagesnow,  showusthemagesnow, showusthemagesnow ....)

    Edit:

@spiderguy: We are probably at least half through it, latest at the Adepticon we'll get them, hang in there. I guess you also waited 3 years for the new HE, like me, so this is nothing.

    Hey Folks,

I just got my hands on the Idoneth battleforce and I am very excited to be playing one of the most interesting and unique factions in the game. However, I am feeling a touch overwhelmed in terms of moving forward with the faction. I will probably get the start collecting set and my cousin has recently gifted me with a neat custom Akhelian Queen. I think that my army will not end up being very competitive, mixing infantry and cavalry, but I think that will be a more interesting force to collect and paint.  I suppose I will very gradually move towards a more eel focused list.

I look forward to learning the faction's play style and coming up with an interesting theme for my army.

You might want to have a look at the Idoneth Faction Focus vid on YouTube on the "AOS Coach" channel. I especially liked that discussion because it features  two competitive players who have a different approach and play style. I think this will help you get an idea how to make your play style at least relatively successful.

Aw shucks, thanks guys, you're way too kind. :)

Riding on the Lumineth hype, I've got a series covering both Eltharion and his nemesis Grom planned next, though it may be a while, as I've got three novels and the entire End Times left to cover for Teclis. 😳

When I originally had the idea for the series, I was going to cover Archaon, but looking at the reading material (in the spoiler below) I may put out shorter articles on his supporting cast of rival, hype man and older brother with severe adult  learning difficulties in Valten, Crom and Be'lakor while I work my way through.

As always, feedback and errors more than welcome. :)

I really enjoy these. Very informative. It's a big walk down memory lane for me, but also a lot of stuff I didn't know although being a huge High Elf and Teclis fan. I'm just re-reading the Bill King novels about T&T.

Good timing too - get's us through the waiting time here. Hopefully we hear something new at the NY ToyFair on the 22nd. Maybe the Sentinels, which will then be featured in the community article in 3 weeks 🥴

Both Tolkien and Moorcock sort of reinforced that whole "dieing Elder race" trope.  In Tolkien's work, the elves were already diminishing and preparing to travel to the west.  This colored a good chunk of early fantasy, especially Dungeons and Dragons.  However, as has been stated earlier, Moorcock's work is what really shaped Warhammer.  And Moorcock basically wrote the End Times before GW did.  Elric, his most famous character, was basically Teclis if Teclis had a soul-eating vampiric sword that empowered him instead of a staff, and he was basically the Phoenix King, but had to abandon the throne because he was forced to kill his lover, who was also his cousin.  Was it mentioned that Moorcock wrote Elric back in the 60's?  An amazing read though for any one who likes either of the fantasy Warhammer settings.

Yup, the Old World was kind of an  amalgam of Tolkien, Moorcock and Terry Pratchett. And the elves partly a creative way for a bunch of English guys to work through the wars and loss of their Empire. That's why I think that that trope wouldn't really fit with AOS. As the Aelves in that setting aren't "the firstborn" or an "old empire" or anything like that.

I mean they still could do this of course, as it's the usual thing you do with elves, but I personally feel it would be bit of a missed chance to not focus on other aspects.

The whole eternal champion is great though. I really loved the Elric books. The first two RPGs that I bought for myself were MERP and Stormbringer. Although I never really played the latter much.

They are painting Slaanesh as the big boogeyman and defiler of the elven race. They might not play the part of the previous trope, but that relationship feels rather sour as they've simply defined a big element of the elven culture and history. It's a shadow that follows everywhere you want to take your spin on the new elves, much like "the doomed race" did.

That's fine for me (as of what we know so far). I just would find it more interesting if they for once would also be more vigorous and expand, and not always on the verge of extinction (but this never having any true meaning anyway as Spyderguy says) from the start. Also in AOS they aren't really a "Eldar" race which is older than the others and peaked way in the past. In a way they are more of a younger race here which developed their culture relatively recently compared to others. Although we don't know when the Reinvention happened, but likely not long before the Age of Chaos.

  15. I can’t speak for everyone of course but in my case, I’d rather the Lumineth be Aelves which ride monsters or work with some cool stuff like Spiderguy mentioned above than their elites being monstrous units themselves. More like the Idoneth and less like the Sylvaneth or Daughters.

But I wouldn’t mind if there is some cool Hysh spirit, light dragon, elemental or something like that among them.

I just hope they don’t go with the - the Lumineth are already almost extinct and rely on animated warriors and spirits because of numbers - thing. I’d really like to have some expanding elves for once. That’s kind of the only thing I really don’t feel nostalgic about.

I’m a high elf player since 5th Ed Wfb. But I think it would be very odd for GW to discontinue some of the HE most iconic unit kits and then just launch another army with pretty much the same units. I think it would be wise to temper expectations a bit.

as much as I would love a really good, normal dragon kit, we’ll probably see more weird AoS creatures. The same goes for elite cavalry. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but personally I’m trying really hard not to get my hopes up to much and just enjoy the new elf army whatever it looks like. Instead of getting disappointed there are no new swordmasters etc.

(having said that, I’m already collecting classic elf helmets and am looking into 3D printing high elf shields to give the Lumineth a more classic high elf look😛)

I guess most of us think like that. What I meant for example when I wrote that it's likely we see Swordmasters, White Lions and Dragon Knights, I meant that we'll see somewhat similar units . I doubt that the new "White Lions" will have White Lions coats, but I think there will be some kind of Great Axe wielding unit for the Lumineth with a similar feeling to them. Same for the Dragon Knights, if they come back, I don't think they'll ride on horses.

This is actually one of the things I look most forward to, their mounts and monsters. Will they go full Hysh Spirits a la Celennar, or do we get dragons? Or might there be some spirit like "Hysh Dragons" and how would those look like.

Hey guys, you've been very helpful. Between this and a Warhammer wiki on (former) Wikia, I got all the info I needed :)

Observation: is it me, or was the old WFB / WFRP a tad... better? I prefer AoS as a game, but I got the feeling that the Old World was a deeper, more focused and more coherent setting than the Mortal Realms. Mortal Realms is so... vast and yet, it doesn't engage my emotions the same way the stuff I read about the Old World does...

Anyway, a Lumineth-related question: how you are planning on painting these guys? Somehow, I got the feeling that color-shifting paints might be of use here...

The old setting had its strength, and was much more focused and relatable than AOS. You'd at least vaguely knew from history and other fantasy settings about most of the factions, and many characters were more human.  As mentioned by others it took them quite a while to flesh it out and make it really interesting though. And the Old World also had its flaws. It was hard to show change and progress in the Old World. Chaos/Dark Elves/Greenskins invade somewhere, destroy everything in their wake, but ultimately get beaten back, and the old balance is restored, albeit the "Order" factions are weaker than before. Rinse and repeat. for example, the High Elves were on the verge of extinction the whole time without  any real change or effect on anything.

In the new setting they are much freer to change stuff and introduce new things. They are also much more in line with current culture (movies and video games) where everyone is a super hero with super powers. In old RPGs fighters would just fight, and get some magical stuff that made them do extraordinary things, now they have magic moves (super jumps and bashes and what not) which are similar to spells. Not everyone will like that, and I'm sure they'll also try to please the crowd who wants to have a more gritty, normal human perspective, but this new approach also lets them do some awesome stuff. Like all the fantastic environment they came up with for the Realms, Living Spells etc. which also have an effect on the  gameplay.

And as much as I like my old High Elves, the down to earth citizen militia Spearmen for example. Compared to the Lumineth Phalanxes having spears with sunmetal tips that "flare into life with the solar energies they have absorbed, tearing through armour, flesh and bone", they could come off as somewhat boring. What a great idea and image.

I do think like you they have a problem with AOS so far, that  there aren't many relatable characters yet, the old ones have all become some loosely defined "gods", and the ones are still not really established. That should happen though over time.

I hope they incorporate Phoenix Temple, at very least as allies.

In the Cities of Sigmar Battletome it says that one of the conditions to become a Annointed is to make a pilgrimage to the Pyre of the Pheonix in Hysh, a crystallized valley filled with the godbeast’s ashes and meditate there for years. So if they can’t ally, they definitely missed a chance to do more with that story.

And I’m sure that the reason why they kept most of the most popular HE units out of the Cities Battletome, like White Lions, Swordmasters and Dragon Knights, is because they’ll come back in their AOS form with the Lumineth. It wouldn’t make much sense otherwise to do that. We already know that key parts of the basic troops and Eldritch Council which got the same treatment are part of the Lumineth.

And in play style terms, they made the perfect anvil, so we need our hammers, with all the nostalgia they created (Swordmasters were part of the pointy aelves video), they must bring back at least some of them.

    ...

I just stumbled on this thread, and I totally agree with that. I'm a High Elf fan, and really liked what GW did in the setting with High Elves (and also Wood Elves). I also think the concept of the Idoneth is great.

But if you read the novels, even the quite good ones like the Tyrion and Teclis books, they never do anything much with all the really cool concepts they have.

Of course in the book, the author states how much Elves are alien to humans and how differently they act from humans, but the actual actions shown in the books are nothing like that. There is nothing alien at all about them, nothing mysterious or genuine different or interesting.

I still quite liked the Tyrion and Teclis books, because the characters are pretty good, and there is quite some humor in them. But you could easily find better written fantasy books, if you are interested in such things. Even for someone who likes the HE. I couldn't really recommend these books to anyone who is not a Teclis or Tyrion fan or something close to that. I've read a few other BL books, but generally they are just not that good. If you like a faction or character, then they are fine for what they are, but they usually don't offer much for a more broader readership.

So, I basically would never pick up a book about Stormcast Eternals, because I'm not interested in them in the first place, and doubt they are interesting enough for the stories/characters as such to pay something for them. Basically so far what interests me in the setting and the various factions can be satisfied with reading the battletomes and watching stuff on YouTube etc.

That said, I'll have a look into a Lumineth book again, if they publish one and see if I like that.

  19. Yup, they named them in the 2nd lowdown. And I don’t think that any of the troops we have seen so far will be exclusive to one character. These seem to be the most basic troop types. Might just be they get some kind of bonus if the right character is there.

We also have the four spirits which might give special traits, and then things like the High Warden which seems to be doing something similar. It’ll be interesting to see how this all comes together.

There might be some dual kits for the special troops, like a Swordmaster type for Teclis and a White Lion type for Tyrion. I also hope though there won’t be any restrictions.

  20. So, as we have nothing much to do besides  speculations, how about having some fun with the names? So far we have:

    Vanari Auralan Wardens

    Vanari Dawnriders

    Auralan Sentinels

And we know that there is a Tyrionic/Teclian, Sun/Moon dichotomy thing going on, and the Vanari Auralan Wardens having both. So might those be the Lumenithian names for this? Vanari being the Sun/Tyrion aspect? Because "Dawnrider"? And Auralan the moon aspect? Or the other way round?

Of course in the article they also call the Vanari Auralan Wardens just Auralan Wardens, and the Dawnriders are also equipped with moon symbols on their shields, so this could be something totally different. Any ideas?

also dang, didn't mean to start spear discourse 😅 I highly doubt they will be one-use weapons as they are constantly mentioned as a Phalanx Unit. But it will be interesting to see how the two weapon profiles differ in both statline and usage.

It's the art of the Warden they use in the article. The close up on the face on the wedge to the article and the full Warden in the article next to the "Who Are They" caption: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/02/10/the-lumineth-lowdown-part-2-spear-phalanxes-and-runic-symbolismgw-homepage-post-2/

True, however if its only books on the container chances are GW can hold them quite easily in warehousing stock space without too much impact. So this might just reflect them ordering from overseas a little earlier to avoid issues like they had last year with Sylvaneth which really messed them up for a good few months for AoS. Whilst it didn't slow releases, it certainly stalled them and left them releasing very close to Christmas.

Yes, of course. This is such a low number and small space, they can just put them somewhere. Plus, I have no idea about their retail and distribution models.

Just wanted to point out that those books are not several months away from arriving in the USA. They basically could be in shops next week depending on what they do.

  23. Quote

Probably worth pointing out that cargo ships can take up to three months to arrive from China 😉  That's without factoring in GW's scheduling and shipping to stores etc.

3 to 4 weeks is more normal though. Depending a bit which ports are involved of course. And this container already arrived in the USA yesterday.
