Ahh, do they? I assumed that the fact they'd called the ability out in the article meant it was something new!

    yup!

anyway, I was hoping to see the whole warscroll or at least the statline. With rend -2 the statement about rend being reduced in the new edition sounds pretty fun (I know, it's a sniper rifle), I am curious to see if the same is true about range -if they kept range 30" we're exactly where we left.

I think they will start showing them this week. Otherwise we won't have them all before the preorder announcement and the expected indexes release date.

they can still do 2 per day if needed, I don't think Faction Focuses are such a massive draw for the new edition anyway -as always, I think most people don't care much about the rules and rules don't drive sales so much

They've run out of stuff to talk about already. Not even a mention of faction focus articles.

I think the idea is that they have covered the rules and these will be fully revealed on the 18th. Then they will start covering the factions I suppose

The third option is literally what Leviathan did though.

It is, but as @Starfyre pointed out, neither Leviathan nor Dominion might be the correct analogy. The inclusion of the GHB and other stuff already represents a departure from those boxes. So, the more I think about it, the more it seems that we will get 2 spearheads (SCE and Skaven) in terms of minis.

The stuff we've seen for Stormcast (in the video and the minis we know so far) matches pretty well with Yndrasta's spearhead:

-Yndrasta ==> Hero on crow charger

    -10 vanquishers ==> 10 libs

    -3 annihilators ==> 3 Ruinators & family

    -Chariot ==> Prosecutors

    -Vexillor ==> Axe hero

Even though endless spells don't cost points anymore, there is still some opportunity cost to them. There is no disadvantage to bringing them, that is true. But I am not convinced yet that not bringing them is a big disadvantage.

Take the Quicksilver Blades, for example:

    Mkl4d9o3QgXsm0kH.jpg

Assuming that the banishment value is close to the cast value, is it really that good to use a cast on a CV 6 or 7 endless spell that probably does nothing for a round and does, like, 4-6 rend 1 damage and 2 mortals per activation? You have to set it up outside of 9" and get through the possibility of banishment and getting the spell shot off the table before it can fight a lot of the time, aftwr all. I feel like if I have a 1d3 mortals + some other effect on a regular spell, the two are in pretty tight competition.

I am more likely now than I was before to pick up the malign sorcery box after the rules change, but I don't yet think that I need to buy it in order to not handicap myself.

I feel the point is that banishing them or killing them cost resources. In particular, one shouldn't underestimate what doing 6 damages means (i.e. more than what a chaff units with 10 attacks on 3+/3+/-1/1 will do on average). Are you using a mid-sized hammer or multiple units to kill a spell which can be recast next turn (whether it's your turn or you opponent)? What about 2 or 3 of them?

As for not having them not being a big disadvantage: maybe. The point remains that if you don't buy a box of these you're playing with less rules. It is as if you needed to have spell cards in order to access your faction lore. It's not the end of the world (proxying, kitbashing, 3d printing etc) but playing a "standard" game just became (a bit) more expensive for new players

Maybe we have that caster/ wizard spot covered with the Knight Arcanun? We had a few of them during the 3rd edition.

good point. Somehow, I keep forgetting that the Knight Arcanum exists. really that mask gives them Kaiser Soze-like qualities!

Make no mistake : that will be the unavoidable fate of The Old World.

Based on your previous posts, I can understand where this is coming from: you have been disappointed in the past and you feel an obligation to warn other people so that they will not experience the same negative feelings. However, personally, I think this sometimes veers into cynicism and does not allow space for more hopeful futures.

Again, I am not saying you're wrong, future might well prove you to be right (and the second part of your post surely feels realistic), but in the end you don't know. Here you write "unavoidable", so 100% probability. Maybe you can allow for, say 10% of chance it goes better? 5% chance that it goes way better?

In the end, while being "disappointed" is a negative, not allowing yourself to be happy in the present because of fear of disappointement is also a negative. If we had to formalise it, as long as the total amount of happiness someone draws from being presently excited about TOW is bigger than the future amount of sadness for its demise (multiplied for the likelihood thereof), being hyped is the rational choice.

With the prosecutors coming in a group of 3 this starts framing up some more speculation surrounding the contents of the launch box on the Stormcast side.

    Dominion ---------------- New Launch Box

    10x Vindictors - 10x Liberators

    3x Annihilators - 3x Reclusians

    3x Praetors - 3x Prosecutors

Left unmatched compared to what we think may be coming

Yndrasta - Hammer Hero From Artwork Leaks

    Lord-Imperatant - Raven Mounted Leader

Knight Arcanum - I am going to guess a Knight ranked cater of some kind

Knight Vexillor - I am going to guess a Knight Azyros

What do you think would round out this box?

Maybe the Reclusians count for 5 models (because of the human squires) and that's it, or at least they count for 1 SCE-sized model, so we'd only get some sort of Knight caster as you mention -which is kind of needed anyway after losing all the Sacrosanct wizards.

It allows this ability to interact with opponent's abilities that subtract dice, but it is otherwise more or less the same. I think writing it this way prevents situations where you roll 3d6 and your opponent triggers their "make them roll 1d6" ability and you just get trumped by it. Overall it's nice and makes those abilities more intuitive in their interaction.

considering how hugely impactful "-1d6 for charging" would be, I hope we never see that ability (terrible memories of the old Khorne Daemon prince).

also I feel like this ability further pushes towards building deathstar units (usual disclaimer applies, we don't know the full rules etc)

Extremely rad models but adding dice to charge rolls is very interesting!

maybe I am missing some nuance between adding a dice and rolling 3d6, but they already had the same rule.

As for the minis, I am not a fan of the tactical columns in general, other than that Prosecutors are a cool concept and these are a nice improvement.

I don't find the double turn to be problematic.

Perfectly fair -I even share the sentiment. You'll notice however that I didn't say "the double turn is problematic" but that it has problematic aspects (for instance, for a subset of new and/or casual players).

    1) game designers think that the double turn needs to be balanced by something

    2) The game designers provide narrative a casual game modes where that something is absent

    3) narrative and casual game modes get the more unbalanced version of the double turn.

So, my point was that linking the balancing mechanic of the double turn to the battle tactics seems a strange choice. I feel that those who don't like playing with battle tactics and those who don't like the double turn might overlap to a relatively large degree.

Asking people to "test order" a couple of minis isn't really serious. It's like saying "well you're not sure about that phone ? Test order one !" : basically, it's asking people to still buy something they're not sure it will be the quality it looks like on the advertised renders. And if it's not, it's lost money and you throw the horrible miniature in the bin. Awful feeling.

To each their own I guess. If you want to buy 3d prints (because you like the minis not because you want to save money) and don't have a 3d printer yourself (or a friend with one) I'd say test buying before placing larger orders is a good option. How would you proceed?

Tbh, I don't think your example with the phone really works, it would be more like: before buying the phone from a shop you don't know, maybe order something cheaper and see if they deliver, or something like that.

PS: my point is not to defend the 3d printing business, let alone saying that GW is doomed. Just giving advice based on my experience

  13. 41 minutes ago, Tonhel said:

I think for 3D printing you either do it yourself, because buying 3D prints will only result in disappointment. The wrong resin used, wrong scale, badly removed supports and it isn't cheaper than GW in the end. So imo. You either print it yourself or stay away from it. Certainly for armybuilding. Atleast that's my advice. 😄

Or you do a test order of a couple of minis before placing a large order

Well, my first instinct is still to just keep ignoring battle tactics altogether.

The paradox being that now (not) scoring a battle tactic is the main balancing mechanic for double turns. So if you decide to play without them, you've increased the problematic aspects of the double turn

Speaking in what is going to pop up here and there in 4th and the future I was thinking more on Spearhead boxes.

In the preview on different game modules they mentioned that there is no magic phase. Now no magic/ prayers is going to feel a little odd for some boxes that already have Wizards and Priests as the general. Sure they can edit them to make them fit in to Spearhead but it won't feel very true to the models so curious which boxes  will be updated first. For example they mentioned Vanari as a Regiment maybe we will see the Cathallar replaced.

Maybe it will even point to speculation on model updates. Soulblight have a Vampire lord for example but maybe we would have a thematic box of Wight Knight, Graveguard and Black Knights to remove the wizard and also have updated sculpts.

Interestingly, the article on magic didn't even mention the word "module". So maybe the rule for using magic and prayers is part of the core rules, and only (say) spell lores are part of the advanced module. You could then solve the situation by giving the wizards and priests in Spearhead boxes a different warscroll with a spell/prayer on it (we have seen Nagash has one so the concept of warscroll spell still exists). This seems more likely than not having a single wizard/priest across all spearhead boxes.

I think there's probably space for specialist anti-armour units with mortal wound abilities, if rend is down as a general rule, armies will still want some tools to deal with 2+/3+ armour with All Out Defence and the like.

agreed. With the first unit we were shown starting from a 3+ with two ways to get +1 (AoD and SCE Finest Hour) my bet would be for the level of MWs to remain more or less unchanged -although, it could still be less prevalent in shooting and moved to spell for instance.

It is weird that we talked about Magic, Commands, Movement, Fighting, Battle Traits & Formations and Battlepacks/Battleplans... but we still don't have any article about the Shooting Phase?

Maybe it's because there's very few changes? Are we expecting anything major? (apart from what we know already, no shooting if you're in melee, which is big but already "spoiled")

  18. 3 minutes ago, Neil Arthur Hotep said:

I don't think games going longer than 3 hours is that weird.

    +1

I see games not managing to finish the full 5 turns in 3 hours in tournaments around here all the time. At the club it goes for much longer than that (one of the reasons why I don't like AoS in "casual" settings)

There‘s also a rumor that Henry Cavill hates it so much he might drop out of the show as it reminds him of the whole Witcher fiasco but not sure if there is any truth to it. Apparently Amazon asked for female Custodes for the show.

Yes there's a rumour... coming out of a random 4chan post... Which ends with "my father works at Nintendo". It says a lot about the level of the debate really.

The past few days made me feel so happy that AoS, for all it's flaws, is not saddled with with the "boys club" lore.

Yes, you can see the direction of travel in that BoC didn't receive any points tweak in the latest battlescroll, after the squatting announcement.

yeah, same for the removed Stormcast units

Also worth noting that the digital Battletomes for beasts, BS and wizardcasts will get rule and point balences thoughtout all of 4th edition.

It's a nice thought, but I cannot fail to notice that, even before the official announcement of the removal, Bonesplitterz were completely ignored by battlescolls for quite a while. My expectation is a very minimal effort for both the indexes and the updating thereof (unless there's something completely out of whack there)

I wonder how it will go. What do people think would be a good point cost for a unit like the new Vindictors?

    wKrv0SCLPLIbKn1A.jpg

I think if you were to put them in the present game they would be pointed as they are already -they get potential ASF and better rend if charged but lose mortals on 6s- and would rarely see play because they are not the cheapest battleline.

  23. 1 hour ago, Chikout said:

I've gone back and forth on this but now I'm pretty sure you can't ignore the -1. You can't stop reading a sentence half way. If I say I ignore the rain when it's light, that doesn't mean I ignore the rain all the time. I think this will become clear when we see the declare and effect stages of shooting. We had the same thing for charges and the full rules quickly resolved the issue.

I imagine the declare step will just be pick a viable target. At this point the warlock engineer can ignore the guarded hero restrictions.  The effect step will be  resolve shooting attacks that target the unit, which is how combat does it.  The - 1 is applied here and warlock engineers can't ignore it.

Exactly, we even have the Fight ability to reference, which clearly shows that "picking a target" is part of the declaration, whereas resolving attacks is part of the effect.
