  1. I don’t see myself picking these up - the output looks really messy for the stuff GW has painted and if I had to spend time glazing over it again I think I mght as well have just done sketch style to begin with. However, I don’t play the games that much anyway, so can’t say I’m the target audience.

I think this will be good for the community; its a much lower barrier to entry compared to the current base/shade/layer/highlight approach and folks who want to go further can always learn. I also recall from my first painting class ever (with the awesome Matt DiPietro) that he expected most folks would need to unlearn base/shade/layer/highlight if they wanted to compete (I’m paraphrasing here based on my recollection) and switch to thinking about volume/contrast anyway, so I don’t know that adding this new methodology will be pulling the legs out from under all the new folks starting out painting.

Now what I’d really like would be for them to throw out the current bottle design and switch to dropper bottles so I don’t knock out half my agrax shade in one go.

Maybe be strange but im more hyped for the new bone spray than the paints.

I love paint on white primer,i hate black because it is hard to see details,i changued to vallejo grey but for projects as fyreslayers painted with shades i need white primer.

And white primer is veeeeeery bad,it goes frosty or eat details easy.

If this new spray can be used as replace for white primer and work fine i gonna be very happy

Eh, if you have not tried zenithal priming you havem’t lived. I also hate black primer because my eyesight is poor, but the zenithal white makes everything clear and also allows you to place shadows correctly.

  3. How are folks building their witch aelves and avoiding duplicates? I’ve noticed that all the heads are interchangeable, although the hair has to stay the same for each body. I’ve found that with some slight chopping and green stuff some of the arms can be swapped around as well. Interested to see what you all have come up with!

Yeah, you're properbly right. Too bad tho, I really like their lore and the models.

Btw. Just got all the models I ordered:

    Devoted of khaine battleforce

5 boxes of melusai and a cauldron box.

What do you vets recommend I assemble it as?

    Thanks! 😁

I’m by no means a veteran, but as a newbie I’m planning to build and paint as I go. The next handbook is probably going to shake things up a bit based on all the comments I’ve seen, sommay not be wise to go all in right now.

My hope is that we don’t get nerfed into the ground and instead get some rebalancing/buffs on the less popular units.

    🙄 SMH

I'm more hippie than most, but not only do I think it's acceptable, I think it's laudable. If you build a business over 40 years from three guys in the back of a van to thousands of employees across the globe, you have not only a right to defend it, but an obligation to those employees.

Not that the size of your business is the key determinant. It's something you own and built, so no matter if you are a mom and pop cake maker or a billion dollar a year widget maker, you are entitled to protect what you have from those who would threaten it.

I think it is romantic to think that this is done over some sense of history and ownership. From what I’ve seen,  in publicly traded companies that sense of history and ownership is at best internal advertising. The folks who make high level decisions in a publicly traded company are generally focused on short term profit and long term sustainability of the ability to make that profit. The nice thing is that such goals usually coincide with retaining your staff and avoiding lay-offs - but we shouldn’t lionize them as the necessarily the same folks for whom the work was likely about more than profit, or as really being interested in employee welfare as anything beyond a means to an end.

Which is not to say anyone is evil or that it is objectively immoral to use the tools at your disposal to crush your competition - simply that they don’t need our defense. In fact, they probably couldn’t care less what we think on the matter as long as we keep consuming.

  6. I think it would be amazing if legacy armies were maintained indefinitely. Is it practical? Maybe not. But thats not really our concern as consumers. For folks jeering at the TKers and Bretts - One day your favorite army could be TK’ed and then you’ll get to enjoy the irony of watching someone else prattle about how you should get on with the times. Unless your stormcast I guess, in which case that probably means Age of Sigmar is over.

I don’t personally have a stake in TK or Bretts being supported again, but I can empathize with their frustration.

  7. My original plan for starting AoS was to go into Wanderers, though I ended up picking up DoK because I didnt like glade guard models and loved witch aelves. That being said, the new direction they are taking with sylvaneth does make it feel like there’s less and less room for classic wood aelves. I really hope I’m wrong and Wanderers get fleshed out down the road.

Yep GW said they'd have rules but no models at all, which makes sense. I think the next place for new DoK would be with an eventual Shadspire Warband.

Eh I am looking forward to that. The same 5 witch aelf bodies can only be posed so much without resorting to significant chopping right now...

I wanted to add some info on magnetizing Khinerai, as I just did mine.

Don't use too strong magnets and place it underneath the spot where you glued the Khinerai to the base, otherwise you risk breaking the model from its base when trying to pick them up.

As long they won't slide around in the box, the magnet is good enough, there is no need to have the model upside down in a box.

Uh oh that sounds lke a bad experience. Thanks for the heads up!

  10. 13 hours ago, Overread said:

I think Khinerai want to be in foam due to how they are attached to the base via their tails. Even with their base secure the upper model would move around a lot and shake when in transport. They'd be most at risk from either wearing the plastic or getting spines (they've a lot on their wings) entangled with other models leading to scraping or damage.

Otherwise most of the rest of the range is pretty stable and solid so a metal sheet and magnets would work well for car based transport and carrying.

Do you foam transport everything then? Seems a hassle to go half and half

@Xil what is your experience with khinerai on magnets?

  11. What are people using to transport their army? I’m planning to have a bunch of witch aelves, khinerai and cauldrons. My current foam solution seems a bit iffy for this. Is anyone using a magnetized solution, and if so, are you placing magnets on the bases of every model or using a magnetized tray and some steel washers on every base?

If you would take Lifetakers anyway you can run it. If not, you can take 10 Witch Elves with Bucklers for screening by saving the 100 points on the battalion. And use the at least 160 points from Lifetakers for independent units of Heartrender or get 5 Blood sisters.

It's better me thinks. Unless you want less drops.

But I am pretty new to DoK myself tho

Are lifetakers not good? Has anyone used them extensively? I’ve seen allusions to them being worse than heartrenders, but am curious by what degree

  13. 2 hours ago, Xil said:

I tried Cauldron Guard yesterday. The Buff the units get doesn't warrant the high cost in my opinion. Also it forces you to take Lifetakers, which apart from the possible objective grapping don't bring anything to the table. Lifetakers have no damage nor the staying power...

    I am not convinced.

Would you not run any battalion then?

    1 hour ago, Lucentia said:

Draichi Ganeth Slaughter Troupe can be quite good fun (Let's you bring 2 units of Witch Aelves in the battalion, and everything can retreat and charge to reapply the DG charging buff) but as a base battalion it's usable but sometimes feels inessential as Sisters of Slaughter and Heartrenders kinda don't need the retreat and charge ability, though it is handy, and I know some Slaughter Troupe lists have done well in tournaments.

Cauldron Guard I actually think is quite good, +1 to run and charge on Witches is no bad thing, you can run max Witches and min Lifetakers and the cost it not too bad, Lifetakers can be a handy drop-down screen and objective snatchers (Though Heartrenders certainly do this job better). I've been running a cauldron guard list with 2x 10 Lifetakers and I don't dislike them, they're fairly cheap and you can run them as a first wave assault to clear out enemy screens, but that depends on the match-up, they'll tear through 20 Clanrats no problem, but can bounce spectacularly off tougher targets. On the plus side once they have done their attacks they have that 50/50 shot of hopping back to set up as a screen of their own. I like them in theory, but I need to try them more before I'm really sold.

How do you take extra heroes if taking slaughter troupe - doesnt it force extra battle line?

  14. What do people think about the battalions? Such as Cauldron Guard? I like the idea of battalions but the small unit selection within them seems to force you to take large squads of the same models to use in bigger points games. Eg cauldron guard needs 60 witches and 20 khinerai to fill in points, which prevents me from taking bits of this and that.

I come from the Horus Heresy where we have Rites of War that offer thematic army benefits, but restrict list building (eg. the Night Lords can make their terror squads count as battleline and get some bonuses to cover saves, but they can only take a single heavy unit if they select that rite.) This allows for more flexibility to buy/paint what I want to get 2000 points. AoS battalions seem to pigeon hole me harder into only picking a few units instead, which seems painful if rules/points update annually and also from the perspective of painting the same things and running a samey looking force.

I do not believe that the Hydra and Kharybdiss have any lore connection, they just share the same kit, but I'm no expert.  If you have a cool flavour hook like that then I think including a Kharybdiss regardless of how 'optimal' it is.  Alternatively if you're feeling creative you could perhaps kit-bash a Cauldron of Blood which is being carried by a Kharybdiss somehow?

    T_T

    Decisions decisions.

In other news, how are people kitbashing their alternative hag queens? Where do you get the cups?

  16. 3 hours ago, Lucentia said:

The Kharybdiss is, unfortunately, saddled with a not particularly inspiring warscroll, so as monster choices go it is not the most optimal pick.  However if you really like the model it is fairly cheap in terms of points, and there's nothing wrong with trying to make it work for you.  It's most interesting feature to me is the 3" range on its primary melee attacks, which allow it to sneak into the edges of combat and deal some damage whilst being fairly safe from retaliation, but its damage output is not huge.  The Abyssal Howl could combo well with the Mindrazor spell, but it's using the old wording of 'bravery' versus 'bravery characteristic' so I'm not sure if that actually works per the rules as written. It's a warscroll with quite a confused battlefield role I think!

I might suggest that the Hydra could be more useful in a DoK list if you want an allied monster because it can work as a moderately tanky block in some circumstances thanks to its regeneration.  But if your heart is set on trying out a Kharybdiss I would probably try and use it as a counter-charge element maybe?

Lore wise, are hydra the progeny of Kharybtar? I really want to hook into the earlier confrontation between Kharybtar and Morathi since my renegade temple should have a preference of alliance with others that hate morathi. Also how often do warscrolls forstuff like the Kharybdiss get updated? Does it happen annually?

  17. Question about the battletome rumours: do we think a new Daughters of Khaine book will come out in the next year? I’m slow growing a DoK temple and will probably take at least 6 months to have something usable. Thinking about whether getting the current tome would be worth it.

  18. Question - I want to run Kharybdiss because the models look cool and fit in visually with daughters. Does anyone have thoughts on how to make this work?

I’ve never played the game before, so cant just look at the warscroll and know what they are good for. What would their battlefield role be? Sweeping chumps? Being tanky? Fighting other big monsters?

So I've tried this and it was harder than expected and I'm not sure 100 percent I like the results as there were a couple of big issues I encountered when making them.

There are cables, grenades, buttons and ammo pouches all over the models which need to be removed. This took far longer than I expected it to.

The arms weren't easily compatible. I had to remove shields off of arms so I could then glue them on. Also the arms are different widths between the kits. Again this took a long time to sort out.

The two kits have different head joints. The witch elf heads lack a neck which meant each head had to have a blob of green stuff to hold the head up high enough to look normal. Don't even get me started on the hair, I gave up and used the masks.

Finally the wyches are slightly smaller on the battlefield. They aren't jumping off of rocks or doing other similar poses and this makes them stand out as different which combined with the masks meant they looked less like witch elves than I wanted.

I saved money doing the conversion but I probably spent 5 times longer making a unit I'm not super happy with, doesn't fit in with the rest of my army and will probably be replacing in the summer.

I have some dark eldar witch models and agree - the propportions are different. The witch aelves are more lithe and fantastical whereas the dark eldar are chunkier and more “realistic”

and of course, those high tech bits look like a pain to remove

@Ggom You could also get creative and instead of a mask you could use paint to "paint" a facial mark on the character. A tattoo replacing the mask. If you look at the deamonettes you can see swirls and markings done to good effect on their bodies (on the GW website)

The Witches of the Temple of Ggom, forgoing the traditional rites instead tattoo the faces of Sisters of Slaughter using rare metals mixed with pigment. The process is performed without any pain relief and the witch must maintain perfect composure so that her markings remain perfect as they are worked upon her skin. The process is reported to be as painful as the blazing mask of gold others of their kin wear - some even say that its a far more intense trial for any break in concentration will result in a mark that will remain forever upon the witch. Marking her failure for the rest of her life.

This sounds awesome! I am thnking of runnng a renegade temple anyway - a break away from the cult of morathi that has chosen to return to their khainite roots and now wanders the realms seeking to restore their god. No melusai - these would have been purged from their ranks early on during their awakening - but some of the khinerai are tolerated. Aside from Khaine they also honor Kharybtar; and his children often lend them their strength in battle, especially when they seek out their former brethren.

  21. Hey folks, been a lurker for a while and recently decided to pick up AoS. I am going with Daughters because the models are beautiful. It’s taking time to paint but honestly it’s really fun painting witch aelves! 6A9994F3-7A66-4884-B0F9-1DF1EF6F2581.jpeg.9c8fdf3b0ea746a1c15b1ee06285e611.jpeg

    Question for folks:

I dislike the masks on these girls, IMO the face sculpts are pretty and should not be hidden. Do you think players would mind if I used the aelf faces for units even if they are supposed to be masked? For instance - Sisters of Slaughter would just be witch aelves with whips.
