We don't know that warscrolls won't still be free on the new app and even if they are put behind a paywall, you can still download them from the GW site.

Except that none of the currently available Thunderstrike Stormcast or Kruelboyz models have downloadable warscrolls on the webstore. Although possible it’s because they’re only available in boxsets currently, Soul Wars still had the warscroll downloads. This suggests to me they’re either waiting until the battletome releases (like they did for The Crimson Court in Soulblight), or AoS is no longer doing free warscrolls

At the bottom of the article it says 76 warscrolls.

Additionally - but not related to your question - the images in the article show show several units of Annihilators, either all carrying shields or all carrying hammers. Looks like it's one or the other rather than mixed.

The assumption is that Annihilators will be split into 2 warscrolls based on weapon because the 2 handed ones shouldn’t have a 2+ save without the shield

While I appreciate the point you are making Teclis is a poor example (His was the first scroll i checked for a counter argument too). The Archmage ability determines how many spells he can cast and specifically says that he can cast up to 4 spells, so there is an upper limit of 4 for Teclis.

And there is an upper limit of 1 for Evocators

I think this is where you are misunderstanding my argument. You don't need to be able to cast another spell if a special rule tells you that you can cast a spell. Since the spell lore rule says "cast a spell from the Lore" then it doesn't matter that they can only cast one spell per turn normally. Casting a spell from the Lore through this special rule is not bound by their warscroll limitation of one spell per turn.

As I've stated before, nobody here knows if this is intentional or not. It is inconsistent with every other spell lore phrasing in the game but that doesn't mean it is wrong. There are many rules in the game that break the norms and are totally unique, such as Aetherwings moving in the enemy charge phase.

There are even other instances in the game where you can cast additional spells despite a limit of casting per turn. The Whitefire Tome allows a hero that can cast 0 spells to cast a spell. In the 2.0 realm rules for Ghyran there was a command ability that let you cast Shield of Thorns (I think?) and it could be used even if you aren't a WIZARD and regardless of how many spells that hero attempted to cast previously in the phase.

You realise that this argument would mean that every wizard who knows a lore spell would be able to cast it in addition to their warscroll spells regardless of how many spells the warscroll says they can cast right? So you’re ok with Teclis casting 22 spells a turn

  5. Re: Evocators and spells

Evocators can only cast ONE spell per turn. Warscroll specifies they can only cast Empower (this is specifically to disallow Arcane Bolt, Mystic Shield or realm spells). Lore Of Invigoration says they can know and cast one spell, and that this is an exception to the warscroll forbidding any spell other than Empower. The reason it says ‘and cast’ is because otherwise they could know the spell but not use it. Nowhere in any of the relevant rules does it say Evocators can cast more than one spell

  6. Unrelated to the recent rules previews but on the subject of book writers:

I believe there are 2 writers/groups of writers. One writes fun, narrative rules that match the lore (Gloomspite Gitz etc), and the other writes the most overpowered game breaking nonsense they can get away with (Slaanesh 2019 etc)

I don’t agree with the sin/bin meme going around because the battletomes from the first category are actually the better books, it’s the second category that are bad

I have a question;  If I have allies, can I choose them when using the "Lightning Reactions" Allegience Ability?  The ability only specifies units, not Lumineth Realmlord units.  I was daydreaming about Eltharion and Gotrek together and hit upon this thought.

If it is allowed, it might be useful with any Idoneth allies as well.

    What do people think?

Allies never benefit from allegiance abilities, so no I don’t think you can pick non Lumineth units with Lightning Reactions

    Bummer.

Every time a LotR sculpt gets made, a Stormcast doesn't get his wings.

This nonsense has being going around since the very start of the Middle-earth SBG, and is absolutely false. Middle-earth has ALWAYS had a seperate team of rules writers and model sculptors from the other games. Neither impacts releases of the other

I suspect we're finally, mercifully, nearing the end of GW's Lord of the Rings license. I get that they almost had to take it on to prevent another manufacturer from capitalizing on the excitement of the films all those years ago, but it makes no sense to me to have two fantasy skirmish games competing for the same dollars with the same company. And now we get Kruleboyz, which feel to me like "hey, some of you found this hobby through our LotR game, and with that going away, we think you'll stay with us by getting these models that reeeeally look like the models from our LotR range."

Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game is the best GW ‘main game’ rule set they’ve ever done. If/when the license ends, I hope they adapt it for AoS or 40k

Everybody includes beginners to the hobby then

I think the main point here is that this is a launch box, not a starter set. It isn’t intended for complete beginners but any company would be stupid to actually come out and say ‘dont buy this if youre new’ it also isn’t intended to be bought multiple times and build a full army out of it, neither are the Start Collecting boxes by the way.

the actual starter set, like 40K, will come later and I’m guessing will mimic the 40K format of the Recruit, Elite and Command Edition boxes.

personally I’m not buying Dominion, I don’t have the money for it right now (I want a Stardrake! I’ve been putting it off for years) and I suspected it to be gone when I do. I have however secured the Stormcast half of the box. I’m waiting to see what the actual starter set is because I’m hoping for a small format rulebook like the 40K Elite/Command Edition has - I’m not a fan, and never have been, of the large hardback rulebooks. I don’t need the lore sections when I’m playing a game at the store or something. I much prefer digital purely because of the physical space it saves (and the lower prices means I can buy more models), but if 40K is anything to go by then digital books are as good as gone sadly

"The perfect way to get started with the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar"

Literally the first thing it says below Dominion on the webpage

I'm talking about the marketing and advertising from GW itself here. That's what people new to the hobby are going to base their decisions on, not your second hand assumptions.

So to say it's not aimed at beginners when the product description includes the following

"If you’re looking to plunge headfirst into the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, look no further than this glorious boxed set"

"This supplementary booklet is exclusive to the Dominion box and provides newcomers with the perfect starting point for the Warhammer Age of Sigmar hobby, including the story and gameplay rules for a fateful clash between the Stormcast Eternals and Kruleboyz included in the box."

To say to a beginner thst it's not aimed at them with that description is tountamount to gas lighting quite frankly

But if you buy 2 boxes you do not have  2 decent 2000k armies because yndrasta limits you in one box and 40 hobgrots and the second big boy is meh.

furthermore the points in the box are already outdated and their bettletomes will have new points. Stupid.

meanwhile buying 2 indomitus boxes felt good.

Just like the Start Collecting boxes, you aren’t supposed to buy multiple boxes and build a full army out of them. They’re supposed to ‘get you started’ with an army

Personally one of the confusions with both AoS and 40k is that you need to start off at 2000 points and matched play is the only way to play.  For a new player it's far easier to learn the game with a handful of units and just using the core rules.

I blame the previous and existing player base for this being an issue, because just like the fantasy ‘old guard’ people are ‘gatekeeping’

new guy rocks up with his 1 cool hero and a couple of small units looking for a game at the store, everyone laughs at them and says ‘come back when you’ve got 2000pts’

Matched Play is NOT the only way to play, in fact, the game is actually designed around Open Play (as proven by AoS1 pre Generals Handbook). However, Matched Play is the ‘easiest’ way to play with people at the local store

In my opinion faq won't help much. Almost everything is clear in the new rules. Only few armies really need explanation like Ossiarch Bonereapers. What is needed is errata to fix few problems that new edition creates. Unless you are talking about both errata and faq

FAQ and Errata are basically the same thing in this context as GW don’t release one without the other, although they are technically 2 separate documents

There's the hint @zilberfrid mentioned. There's also the eggs mentioned in Broken Realms Kragnos which were given to Kroak. It seems those will have been passed on to the Stormcast. Also the Dragon Emperors hinted at in a recent Warhammer community article about Ghur maybe in reference to them. The big question is whether we are just getting a big centrepiece or also a unit of sleeker dragons as flying cavalry. Unfortunately that particular rumour comes from nefarious parts of the internet and not Whitefang.

Why are people assuming Lord Kroak would give those eggs to Sigmar and the Stormcast?

This was during pandemic and gw had a lot of trouble with their schedule. Right now they are clean. Battletome will drop in June and models with it or week later.

You obviously haven’t been paying attention to how much stuff has been delayed this year
-Seraphon underworlds warband (and every one after it) we’re pushed back a month
-40K orks box should have been out by now
-40K grey knights and thousand sons codex + battle box were supposed to be out before chapter approved released
-sisters of battle are still waiting on at least 1 kit from the codex
-Cawdor necromunda were due months ago
    etc

Sorry that took me a while. The section that they were referencing is in the core rules on the page titled "Warscroll Battalions". It would be either on page 13 or page 15 depending on which version of the rules you're looking at.

    The words specifically say:

"The organisation section of a battalion lists the titles or keywords for the units it can or must include. If an entry i sthe title of a unit, any unit with that title can be used (you can ignore sub-headers under the title unless they are included in the entry for the unit)."

The reasoning given for allowing a Lord Celestant on Dracoth is that in the Battltome, the "on Dracoth" part is a sub-header rather than a title.

The counter argument to this is the part of the text that says "unless they are included in the entry for the unit". The entry being the entry in the back of the book where you see the points costs for the units.

Depending on how you look at it, it could be legal or illegal.

    Summary:

Pro Argument: I can do because this is clearly a subtitle.

    image.png.ead1f0591e248b4ffbb483a8c084219b.png

Con Argument; Yes, but it's a subtitle that's included in the entry for the unit.

    image.png.cdf32d37e9cf9ee60f753c0397671fec.png

Basically, it boilds down to your interpretation of what the "entry" they are referring to is. If it's the entry in the warscroll, it's a sub-header that doesn't matter. If it's the entry on the pitched battle profile list, it's a sub-header that does matter. Due to the lack of a proper FAQ one way or another, TOs can allow it....

To further add confusion to this nonsense (I’m of the belief that you CANT take a mount) the Flesh-Eater Courts Royal Family battalion which started the whole debate received an errata that specifically says no mounts but no other battalions got this

The Stormcast codex points shown in the how to play videos said Updated July, all other tomes were released the same month as the updated month, so right now there is no reason to believe that tome wont be released in July. GW obviously knew that would be shown.

Books are printed months in advance. All that image from the learn to play video tells us is that they wanted to release the book in July, but with the pandemic still causing issues it could have been delayed (eg Space Marines and Necrons last year not coming until October, with the last of the new kits only arriving a month or 2 ago)

Forgive my question but what do you mean by a lack of SCE inequitability?

Are they getting poorer rules to make up for their wider range of models?

That is my theory, yes. Most armies have small model ranges, Stormcast are the largest Order faction and they pay for having those choices with worse rules and limited Battleline options - if Stormcast didn’t have 50+ models to choose from we would have had ‘Battleline If’ Dracothian Guard, I firmly believe we don’t purely because of how much choice Stormcast have

  20. The issue with Hearthguard unit/box size is that the AoS3 rules indirectly nerfed spamming Hearthguard with the Reinforcement rules. Now instead of 3x20 you’ll see 2x15 and maybe some units of 5. If they up the box/unit size to 10, it completely undermines the nerf (although we’d all appreciate the price discount of buy 1x10 vs the current 2x5 costs).

Hearthguard, according to the lore, are more of a bodyguard elite unit rather than the main fighting force and it’s always bothered me that spamming max Hearthguard is all anyone seems to do. Now GW are in an awkward position, because the fyreslayers model range/unit selection is so small, they can’t really apply lore based restrictions on army building (ie no Battleline Hearthguard, and max 1 limits for Runefather and Runemaster).

GW have backed Fyreslayers (and themselves) into a corner, if they don’t plan to expand the army then they have no choice but to do a Orruk Warclans style book for Duardin. If yet another Fyreslayers battletome is released without any new models, then I think that will kill the faction. It would send a message to players (intentionally or not) that the army is on life support and won’t be supported. It will drive away the people who want to get into Fyreslayers but don’t because there’s limited choices, and potentially drive away the current players of the faction. I understand GW is a business and needs to make money, but Fyreslayers are in a catch22. They’re (apparently) unpopular and have low sales, and because of that gw (seemingly) don’t want to invest more money/resources into a bad selling faction by making more units. But not having more units is a major factor in why they’re unpopular and don’t sell well 🤷‍♂️

  21. Why is everyone ignoring the fact battletome overrides core rules in regards to named characters and spells?

“You can choose or roll for one of the following spells for each WIZARD in a <insert faction here> army” overrides “Enhancements cannot be given to Unique units or Allied units, unless noted otherwise”

This could make some way too good to ally in to other armies IMO.

Exhibit A: Lord Kroak can use the Slann spell lore in a Grand Alliance army because his new warscroll says he knows all the spells. That is no doubt a big part of why he went up 110pts because he really doesn’t seem worth 430pts honestly but he needed to be removed as an ally to Stormcast (note that I’m not saying he didn’t need an increase, just that his new warscroll isn’t worth the increase he got, and that he purely went up to stop allies)
