So, anyone have thoughts on how to beat nurgle without nagash. The blightkings and blightlords relentless attackers ability pretty much beats nighthaunt single-handedly.

I've only played them once and had Nagash, but my recommendation would be to try to pin them or feed them screens to prevent them from scoring objectives.

Expecting we'll be getting new rules (new warscrolls from the boxset soon), so really talking strategy too much is a bit moot at the moment.

  2. @Drujeful

The problem with leaning into anti-bravery stuff is that it’s too good against Destruction, too bad against Chaos and Death, and works as intended against most order. Just not something that can be balanced to make for fun games IMO.

    @EnixLHQ

Like already noted, it’s just 1 hero and 5 archers in the box.

Hi. I'm slowly looking back in to the thread to see what was posted before my game report above. Thanks for posting!

You went 3-2 and that is pretty good considering you seem to be the only Nighthaunt to go 3-2 in February! The info is on THW Stats. Only 11 people even brought a Nighthaunt army to a 5 game tournament in the whole month. Sure its up from 5 in Jan and most of these are Nagash lists but its showing that these lists take a lot of skill to pilot to a winning record.

I am interested in your Dreadscythe combo and I'd like to explore it more. Hopefully I get a chance, but I can see many situations where they would be good, and many where they would not. The 1" reach really bugs me.

I just ran a Nagash list, and the general consensus here is that Spirit Hosts are a Trap!, Hexwraiths are a Trap! Chainrasps are a Trap! Olynder? Trap!

Well, I don't think that people who think that these units are traps are wrong, its just that there really isn't a way to optimize our lists at the moment because everything is so damn old. Hammers are weak. Anvils require too many points/combos/healing to last. Doing mortals on 6's was cool a few years ago and Ethereal is not going to kill anything.

Is Nagash the trap? I certainly hope not. I'll be playing him until the book drops.

Ha, that’s cool to note on being the only 3-2 in Feb.

Nagash lists will just take reps; I don’t think any companion is a trap. It’s definitely a list that takes considerable thought. With the new book on the way, it’s also kind of a bummer to play those lists as I’m sure the spell lore will change… and that’s what makes Nagash so good. Reaping Scythe/Soul Cage/Shademist/Lifestealer… just so good for him.

I’d hazard that there’s really good lists with him and Spirit Hosts. There might even be synergy with Myrmourns. And I still want to try a 30 Reaper deathstar with him.

As for Harridans, they’re honestly just plain good. People sleep on them way too much IMO. The 1” is a nuisance, but I can honeycomb them to get most of the models in the fight often enough. Also, they’re often in multi-engagements, which helps getting the most out of them. I just wish they were battleline.

It will already start with the box set once we know the changed warscrolls for myrmourn, bladegheists and know the rules for the new units. My body is so ready. I really hope that ranged unit is going to be a banger and i hope the character is going to create a serious punch for our army. I’m so excited.

Indeed, however scrolls could be different in the box than in the book. Those boxes have a year lead and the books have a 6 month lead IIRC.

I'm just starting out with Nighthaunt, and I've got a casual-oriented 1000-point event coming up next month. The event organiser is vetting each list to make sure that nobody is bringing anything too hardcore competitive. Here's what I was thinking of taking:

      Hide contents
    Allegiance: Nighthaunt
    - Procession: Emerald Host

Lady Olynder, Mortarch of Grief (215)
    - General
Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed (120)
Guardian of Souls with Nightmare Lantern (135)
    5 x Hexwraiths (150)
    5 x Hexwraiths (150)
    10 x Grimghast Reapers (155)
    4 x Myrmourn Banshees (75)

Any advice on how to make something like this work? I've got a vague plan that the Hexwraith units will bodyguard Olynder while she and the Guardian of Souls keep resurrecting them, so she can get up close to the action and throw out mortal wounds. Beyond that, I'm just at the "throw stuff into combat and see what happens" level of tactical understanding of Nighthaunt at this point.

Happy with any suggestions for list changes, spell and artefact choices, and general advice on how to haunt. Much appreciated!

With that list, you’ll likely want to run 3 blobs:

    Olynder and Hexwraiths

    Guardian and Reapers

    Knight and Banshees

Each of those heroes sync nicely with each of those units. I don’t play 1k games, but looks like it should be fun.

It's great to see such discussion about NH again 👍

I’m expecting discussion to really crank up with the new book. A lot of people have some Nighthaunt and/or really like the look of the army.

  6. Spirit Hosts are not there for their output - though they are a nice counter to save stacking Stormcast. They’re there to be a tarpit. They’re also the second best value unit on a point per wounds basis, making them an efficient tarpit.

But yeah, lots to play around with. Myrmourns even have some synergy as they can eat an endless spell cast by Nagash and then be healed pretty easily.

Very interesting insight on your games. What i noticed is in your analysis you said, the hexwraiths weren’t too impressive and you know what… they might be a small trap. Not saying they are bad, no they do their job and always at least bring 1 unit of them in an emerald list. But perhaps for the purpose of Nagash lists and the already mobile nature of the Nighthaunt, more units might not be needed. Once again when you look at the list that went 4-1 at LVO you can see that only 1 Hexwraith unit was taken and no Olynder at all. In fact the only other hero than Nagash was a spirit torment. The rest was 3 units of chainrasps, unit of hexwraiths and a double reinforced unit of spirit hosts with a spell portal. The guy was playing on all of Nagashs’ strengths. He MSU’d most units, he was able to death incarnate spirit hosts. He was able to amplify the spirit torments revive ability and so on and so on. It just goes to show that if you can add bodies and survivable bodies at that to Nagash, it seems to be rather effective. Probably why my dreadblade build was having success too. I played off the utility ability of tricksy redeployment instead of creating another centerpiece unit like Olynder. Not saying she can’t work because she brings her own utility with her, but it is a points sink perhaps in the wrong place.

EDIT: If you want to read more into the tactics used. This page describes it a bit:

    https://www.goonhammer.com/lvo-the-age-of-sigmar-top-8/

Yeah, that might be on to something. I do think there's a lot of gas in 9 Spirit Hosts. However, the return on a unit of 30 Chainrasps or Reapers is more reliable. In that case, you're always getting 4 models/4 wounds back with the Spirit Torment/Nagash combo. In the Spirit Host case, it really depends on how many wounds are on a Spirit Host. There's really a lot to play around with when it comes to Nagash - I just wish I had the time to do so!

Did you run anything with Nagash as support? Can we see your list? Apologies if you've already posted it somewhere in this thread.

I’ve posted my list elsewhere but it was:

Nagash / Olynder (general, Spirit Drain)/ Torment (PotFW)

    3 x 5 Hexwraiths / 10 Chainrasp / 10 Harridans

I’ll try to get a longer post or even a blog post about it up later this week.

  9. So I ended up going 3-2 and finishing 13/40 with my Nighthaunt list. Won a close game against Soulblight that I really had control of the whole game… but it was close. Then eked out a lucky win against Nurgle. This was the only game where Nagash was killed. A combined charge from a Glottkin and Orghotts after some chip damage from shooting and contagion points did him in. Also, he failed to lift a minimum sized unit of Blightkings after I had chosen broken ranks for them due to a whiffs and a miscast on the third spell.

Overall, it was great to go 3-2 and feel like I was in every game. Think I’ll ditch Olynder and the 3 x 5 Hexes if I get to play more before the new book (a 15-month-old at home limits my playtime). She did a bit here and there, but wasn’t a hammer or an anvil really. It’s an okay combo, but I just feel like there might be better options.

The Harridans were easily my second best unit.

  10. I’m attending a GT this weekend in Columbus called Brewhammer. Currently am 1-2.

    My list is Nagash / Olynder / Torment / 3 x 5 Hexes / Chainrasp Horde / Harridans

Not optimized, but it’s what I got together.

Played 50 pink horrors, a dracothian’s tale Seraphon list, and mixed arms Idoneth. Beat the Seraphon.

Overall, Nagash is insane. He’s lifted a unit of 20 pinks, 2 Stormdrake Guard and a reinforced salamander pack that alpha’d him, 5 Saurus Guard, 10 skinks, 10 thralls that alpha’d him, a tide caster, and 2 sharks. He’s also been a battle tactic beast and an absolute anvil even when I mess up his screens.

However, I really don’t think the Olynder match works as well as I thought it would. With so many points into Nagash, you really need efficiency in the rest of your army and Olynder isn’t that and just doesn’t do enough reliably. After this tournament, I think I will look into other combos.

I will say the first matchup is a tough one, but had I gone first it would’ve helped immensely. I also should’ve won against Idoneth and came close to doing so, but made a couple critical mistakes (like forgetting about high tide which my opponent failed to mention to me as well until the combat phase, sigh) that cost me the game.

Maybe I'm dumb, but where is the FAQs in the app? I see the changes when I look at Nagash or Emerald Host specifically, but nothing notified me of a change and I don't see a FAQ page. Latest update seems to be December.

If you click on Core Rules and go to Battletome: Nighthaunt you should see it just got updated on January 26th. It was weird that they didn't notify about it at all otherwise though.

Perhaps they still have to roll out the faq on the website. I indeed see that Deathless Spirits and Spectral Summons works with him. But I don't see anything about the bodyguard rule whatsoever in that 26th of Jan FAQ.

Look at the Knight of Regret rule. They changed it from “general” to “Nighthaunt General”.

Definitely not the same one though.

Also, if there is a ghost boat, I don’t think it would be a monster keyword. I’d guess it would be more like the Black Coach or the KO boats - behemoth, but not a monster.

I'd even be tempted to forgo a subfaction so you could take Ruler of the Spirit Hosts on the general, and get an extra d3+1 spirit hosts back each turn. But they're already on a 4+ ethereal save with a 5+ ward from Nagash, getting d3 healing + 2 back a turn, and maybe sitting on -1 to wound from Shademist if Nagash wants to cast that on them, so they might not need it. Soul cage + reaping scythe also probably make him into something of a melee powerhouse.

Dang it I wanna get Nagash now.

In the one game I saw pics of, he literally encircled his Torment with Hexwraiths. So I guess he very much wanted to keep the Torment alive. In a chat I’m in, someone in his play group said he came up with the list pretty last minute and liked the Torment a lot because it heals in both opponents’ turns.

Good stuff. I’m curious to see how future Nagash lists do. I’ll get 5 games in this upcoming weekend… not expecting much as I have only gotten two test games in. But I have found that Nagash needs to play aggressive. When I hold back I get wrecked on objectives.

    Went 4-1.

Yep. Took me a while to figure out the tech, but I think the Torment babysits the Spirit Hosts and his ability makes sure there’s none on low health so Nagash can bring back 2 each turn.

I wish I would’ve made more time as I wanted to take 9 Spirit Hosts to my tournament next weekend, but just haven’t finished Nagash yet so realized I wouldn’t get to the Spirit Hosts and submitted a different list. I think they can become quite the tarpit though.

  16. Welp, Nagash is already changing things. One of the top 8 lists at LVO in the finals is a Nighthaunt list with Nagash. I’m not sure how LVO rules the bodyguard, but the list is Emerald Host with only one minimum unit of Hexwraiths. You can look it up in the Best Coast Pairings App. The list is generally:

    Nagash / Spirit Torment

    9 Spirit Hosts / Hexwraiths / 3 x 10 Chainrasps

    Spell Portal

Edit: Found out bodyguarding Nagash was not allowed.

Or based on every other nighthaunt warscroll, 0 rend and 1 damage 🤔

I hope they turn out to be a solid unit, and Im optimistic about a 3rd edition battletome.

I mean almost the entire army is Rend -1. I’m really not sure what to expect from them. Maybe something like Judicators?

I have 48 banshees for a banshee themed army so I'm very excited and nervous to see what happens with them.

Wow! That’s an insane amount. I really think being a box of 4 models, that they have to go up to 2 wounds. Stalkers too. But we’ll see.

  18. Some thoughts:

    • Maybe we will be surprised by a large release for Nighthaunt? There's still two rumor engines that IMO are Nighthaunt and not part of this wave. Plus, I can't remember an army getting a new unit in a battlebox and then not getting a some other new stuff in their release.
    • Nighthaunt now have three traditional shooting units: Krulghast, Chainghasts, and the new Craventhrone Guard. Add in the Tomb Banshee, Black Coach's option, and Olynder's shooting phase ability, and that's actually output in the shooting phase.
    • This box contains no current battleline options. I'm guessing one of the three units will be getting a "battleline if..."
    • I'm guessing the re-rolls from the Bladegheists and Spirit Torment will be gone. Bladegheists doing extra damage instead would be nice.
    • Due to unit size, I would not be surprised to see the Myrmourn Banshees or the Craventhrone Guard be two wounds. It's weird to me that the Banshees were only 1 wound to begin with - their ability would work so much better if they were two wounds.
    • Interested to see what the new warscrolls for these units are. Will probably wait to see that before getting the box.

    Edit:

Also ended up submitting the following list for the tournament next weekend:

Nagash / Olynder / Spirt Torment with PotFW

    3 x 5 Hexwraiths / Chainrasps / Harridans

We'll see how I do. Tom Lyons from Warhammer Weekly is also taking an Emerald Host list to the event. I don't know his list, but know he was debating between a Nagash list and a non-Nagash list. So should be interesting to see his list and how he does as well - he's gotten in a lot more reps than me lately with Nighthaunt.

  19. I’m a Nighthaunt player, so may have some bias, but I expect it to be announced that the next book will be Nighthaunt along with whatever model the New Year preview teased.

I then expect a new unit to be teased for Fyreslayers and Idoneth but no book announcement for either yet.

I think NH will jump them because it’s a Death book, which they haven’t released yet this edition. They also have already showed a new model for it.

They have not shown anything else for Idoneth or Fyreslayers yet, just a clue that more is coming soon. I’m hopeful both armies receive a couple new kits, and that could give the AoS Preview more model weight.

  20. Y’all. I’m having some list paralysis for an event the first weekend of Feb -lists are due by midnight Thursday (EST).

I want to run Nagash. The TO has ruled Nagash does not get bodyguard. Due to life and playing Stormcast at a one dayer, I’ve only got two test games in. Here’s what I have available:

    Nagash (working on painting him)

Olynder / Reiekenor (almost finished painting) /Mannfred

Dreadblade Harrow / Krulghast / Spirit Torment / Guardian of Souls

    40 Reapers / 15 Hexwraiths / 10 Chainrasp / 9 Spirit Hosts (primed… 3 more unbuilt)

    10 Harridans / 10 Bladegheists / 4 Myrmourn (unbuilt)

    Black Coach

    I’ve tried out:

    Nagash / Olynder / Krulghast / 3 x 5 Hexes / Chainrasp / Harridans

    and

    Nagash / Mannfred / Olynder / 3 x 5 Hexes

I liked both, but am considering running a list with more of an anvil unit, taking a Harrow general to help with mobility, and taking the Black Coach for fun. Ideas include:

    Nagash / ST / GoS / Harrow / Spirit Hosts / 30 Reapers / Chainrasp

    Olynder / Nagash / Krulghast / 2 x 5 Hexes / 9 Spirit Hosts

    Nagash / Harrow / 20 Reapers / Hexes / 6 Spirit Hosts / Black Coach

Thoughts? I’d like to go 3-2.

lol are you paraphrasing or did they actually claim this? Everything I've seen in my region suggests Dominion is a shelf-warmer. It took ages for it to even disappear off the GW store.

I think AoS players are kinda living in dreamland if they expect the game to ever get the 40k treatment- I strongly suspect even the amount of attention it gets now is disproportionate to the amount of money it makes. Space marines alone probably make more than the entire AoS range.

No, they said this in an official financial report. So it must have sold well, just been over-produced.

Building mine now. Only have two games in so far (against Idoneth and Kruleboyz) but have high hopes. I think the presence of Longstrikes and Stormdrake Guard holds him back a bit, but otherwise he should play good into most matchups but he was able to survive KBZ shooting while playing hyper aggressive (I wanted to see just what he could tank).

I would like to know you opinion about the state of acceptance due to specific points:

    1. Prices increasing with each new release.

    2. Rules bloated. It sometimes takes more than 4 ooks / releases to have all of the rules together.

    3. Power level increasing with new releases, leaving older armies behind.

    4. GW basically neglecting certain factions, wich just don't get anything new and up to date.

    5. Models being locked behind paywalls, or big box sets, for a long period of time.

    6. FAQ debacle.

    7. Massive FOMO

Why do you accept this mess? Looking for individual opinions here.

    cheers///

    1. It's annoying, but I'm not somebody who collects a pile a shame. So it takes me a while to build and then paint... so the price is much more spread out for me than somebody who just buys whatever is new.

    2. The app has fixed a lot of that - for now. I can find the rules for everything I need in the app.

    3. I don't think that's true. Kruleboyz have not done overly well. People were pretty down on Nurgle (though I think it's a good book). I think largely it's just the nature of the new edition - that left certain armies behind.

    4. That's just not true IMO. That happened back when I played WHFB, but every army save Nurgle and Idoneth had a book in 2nd edition, and those two had books right before and now seemingly at the beginning of 3rd edition, plus got lots of supplemental updates. I think people have gotten too used to instantaneous results; I'm actually quite pleased with the rate books and armies get updated.

    5. Annoying, but easy enough to find them secondhand.

    6. What debacle? I enjoyed the most recent FAQ/balance update, and appreciate that FAQs are now in the app.

    7. I just don't buy stuff unless it's for an army I'm currently working on/playing. If I feel I need a limited release model after the fact, I can always get second hand for an upcharge. Typically, I just feel like I don't need it after the fact.
