Can you elaborate on that for those who weren't into the hobby back  then? How did they attempt to mainstream the Forgeworld line and what were these unpleasant results?

Forgeworld started out as a niche product (it still is imo). And as you know, Forgeworld supports more than just AoS.

Back in ~2009 the financial report by forgeworld/GW reported issues with keeping up with demand. So they decided to outsource production (or at least some production) to China.

At that point resin was a substantially more detailed product.

After moving, reports of quality problems increased and the overall quality suffered. Given the premium prices charged for the FW resin the buyers were unhappy and the China production was eventually moved back to the UK.

And as a side note, it was possible to buy some Forgeworld in some mainline GW stores at the time.

What do you mean by that? Are there models from back then that are substantially more detailed from those produced today? What are some examples?

At that time you were working with metal models, and the old plastics. Which didn't have the 3D modeling improvements that we are seeing today and they were nowhere near as nice as current plastics.

To answer the problem with detail in metal models (and the cost of metals and shipping metal miniatures) GW mainline eventually moved to Finecast (which had a number of issues with the early formulations and process)

But, Finecast didn't exist yet (it would be introduced in 2011) and resin was able to hold substantially more detail than the metal miniatures of the day. But for GW, resin was a Forgeworld only product.
