Do skeleton warriors crypt shields work with shooting?

shinros

Question

Right so yesterday played a ladder campaign game against a savage orc player with 2 kunnin ruks 1500 points, lost by one objective point >_< (2k point battleline requirements) still one interesting note I run 40 skeletons.

Now skeletons get +1 to their save against attacks with a rend of - if they have shields.

Crypt Shield: You can add 1 to save rolls for a unit carrying Crypt Shields against attacks that have a Rend of ‘-’.

I thought it was only for melee attacks until the savage orc player said hey it should work against shooting as well since the shooting attacks have a - rend.  So does it work against all attacks with - rend or only melee?

Crypt ShieldYou can add 1 to save rolls for a unit carrying Crypt Shields against attacks that have a rend of ' - '.

The rule does not specify that it only works in the combat phase, or that it only affects melee attacks - so it would work against ranged attacks as well.
