If ability states “you can...for friendly units when they are within x” of this unit.

Is the actually unit providing the buff excluded?

specifically Nagash’s bidding and nightmare lantern.

also continuing nighthaunt abilities questioning. Captured soul energy ability of spirit torment occurs in both opponents and my Battleshock provided 3 enemy models killed.

The unit is always in range of itself (and is a unit that is affected by abilities it itself brings out, if it qualifies for those) - unless specifically stated otherwise. 

i.e: it would not trigger if the wording was: "For friendly units other than this unit.." and such, but the majority of abilities do trigger on the unit itself as well

Edit: And yes. the Captured Soul energy ability occurs in both your own, and your opponent's, battleshock phase, as it specifies "The battleshock phase", which is every time that phase occurs.
