Clan Skyre Spark Timing

I have a question.  Clan Skyre allows you to use a spark to double damage; with weapons with variable damage (Warplock Pistol, Motors, etc) do you have to make that choice before or after you roll the dice?   I think the language is after a "successful attack"

An attack is successful after the armor save roll is failed.

Which is before damage is rolled, correct?  So then I choose whether or not to use the spark before I roll?
