I've seen the whole rules-part of the new battletome.

Barring a few minor buffs everything has been nerfed:

    • Lord-Celestant (on foot) to use his command ability has to stand near an enemy unit (3") and the +1 to hit last only for 1 combat phase (this is a common theme)
    • Vandus Hammerhand's command ability only lasts 1 turn and works only for units wholly within 12"
    • Gavriel Sureheart's starbound blade is now 3+ 3+ instead of 3+ 2+ and his command ability affects units wholly within 12"
    • Neave Blacktalon no longer generates extra attacks
    • Two Lord-Castellants cant have the same target in a single hero phase for their lantern
    • Lord-Relictor (and other priests) can't pray two times in the same hero phase, and both his preyers (healing storm and lighting storm) now have to target someone wholly within 12"
    • Lord-Ordinator no longer lets you shoot twice and his command ability now is just a battleshock immunity for units wholly within 18"
    • Knight-Heraldor onward to glory now target a unit wholly within 12" and his thunderblast is now targeting a terrain feature wholly within 18" and has his range fixed at 3"
    • Gryph-Hounds has changed a lot, loyal companion now has a range of 6" and works also for Lord-Veritant, warning cry now is activated by the setup of enemy reserve units within 10" of Gryph-Hounds and lets friendly Stormcasts wholly within 9" shoot at the unit that has been setup and this can be done only once per phase
    • Retributors blast to ashes and other similar abilities now triggers only on unmodified rolls
    • All the warscroll battalions have now only one ability and some are just useless (lord of the strom now costs 140 ponts and his ability lets you get 1 CP at the start of your turn on a roll of 4+, but if you ditch the battalion and do not spend the points on other things you are guaranteed 2 CP instead of 1 and an half)

I expected some buffs, not this number of nerfs.

In this edition Stormcast are CP hungry, battalions are just overpriced traps (do not pick them for the +1 CP) and a lot of the old models/units are just weaker.

Some of those aren't even nerfs, or you missed accompanying buffs. For example, Gryph-Hounds have been buffed. No more dice shenaningans: they will always dart back enough to get out of combat, you will always know a unit is in range of the warning cry to shoot at the incoming enemies. Another example, Gavriel uses his CA in the charge phase, so he can drop from Scions and buff charges, while he couldn't before.

Some of those minor buffs you mentioned (just from memory):

-Reroll charges from Vexillor is now "wholy within 18" instead of 12.  For small units, that's a net gain in bubble range.

-+1 to hit from Drakesworn bow is now for every phase, not just combat. Dracothian Guard can hit 3+ with their Lightning Breath (and Crossbows if Tempestors!) then hit better in CC (even if the new "unmodified 6s" removes the synergy with Concussor hammers).

    -Crossbow Judicators get +1 shot.

-Tempestors to-hit debuff is an auto-bubble.

-Hurricane Raptors to-charge debuff is an auto-bubble.

-While it can't be improved, Longstrikes Headshot is not affected by LoS.

-Castellant and Veritant get a free Gryph-hound

-Hunters also benefit from the -1 to-be-hit the turn they arrive

With all of the Arcanum versions being crappy, but being the tax to get Sequitors as Battleline, I foresee the one on Gryph-Charger being the obvious choice.

Don't dismiss the Lord-Arcanum on Tauralon so fast. The CA is useless, but the spell is a better Starfall and the Steel Pinions trait is awesome.

  3. Soulstrike Brotherhood doesn't sound that bad. If you were going to field two units of Hunters (like I usually do) and a Ballista, for only 160 points (2 min sized Castigators) and 120 for the battalion you get 5 drops into one, a CP, an artifact and a meaningful rule (2 shots Castigators go from meh to decent).

He's a 2 cast Wizard. I think he'll be quite good, honestly. Spell isn't amazing but still a beefy Hero that casts 2. Give him Ethereal Pendant from Shyish and now he's a big 3+ ignore rend dude who can cast Mystic Shield on himself.

Well, 2-casts is good news. Meh spell can be solved by using Mystic, improved Arcane Bolt and one of the spells from the Lores.

Meh CA can be solved with generic CAs and Stormhost CA (in case we go down that route).

In this kind of cases in which we don't use rules that have been included in a model I feel like I'm wasting part of its points but, that's how it goes :)

I guess I will give him a try. He would have been a dream wingman to a Drakesworn with the healing spell+Cycle. On the other hand, the synergy CA from LAoGC would have tied him down to slow units.

CA is Sacrosanct within 18" get +2" to runs.

Spell is pick a point 12", anything within 3" of that point takes a MW on a 4+. 6+ to cast.

That sounds awful. There goes (almost) my plans to get it.

With Scions, how much are we supposed to run around foot-slogging? Situational and weak. The spell is also less desirable than almost any featured in the Lore of Storms.

Possible last nail in the coffin: does he only get a single casting per turn (as opposed to Aventis?)

Pretty good for MSU holding/harassing. For the price of 5 Judicators, you get 6 Castigators. They miss out on the Shockbolt Bow, but they get their buffs (Rend -2 is really good), and if they split up into 2 units of 3, get 2 Primes and can split up on the board with the new Scions.

Judicators get the boost of being Battleline and having the very swingy Shockbolt bow, but if you've got those 80-160 points at the end of list building, they are great harasser units that can chip down Heroes with Rend -2 and jump on Objectives for cheap.

I ran the numbers and Castigators are worse than Judicators against almost every target. They only get the bonus of having more wounds per point and being cheap at min-size. Bit what are 3 shots going to achieve except being anoying? I can't find the place for such a weak unit which doesn't help me fill battleline. A Celestar Ballista is marginally more expensive and more desirable.

Once again GW messed a new unit.

    2 hours ago, Requizen said:

Nah. His spell is: 6+, pick an enemy unit within 18" and it has -1 to hit rolls. Pretty strong.

Command Ability: When an Endless Spell within 12" of him moves, he can add d6" to the movement. Not great at all.

Do you remember the spell and CA if the generic Arcanum on Tauralon?

I would love to field one but I was counting on them being the same as the LAoGC.

There are quite a few kits in this release and I don't think they've shown us all the models yet on warhammer-community. By my count there are 12 boxes; Soul Wars, 3 small pushfit boxes and 8 multikit boxes:

    Soul Wars
    - Lord Arcanum on Gryph Charger
    - Knight Incantor (female)
    - 5x Castigators
    - 1x Celestar Ballista
    - 3x Evocators
    - 8x Sequitors

    3x Castigors (+ Gryph Hound)
    3x Sequitors
    1x Celestar Ballista

    5x Castigators
    5x Evocators
Lord Arcanum on Dracoline / Asteria
Lord Arcanum on Tauralon / Aventis
    3x Evocators on Dracolines
    Lord Exorcist
    Lord Ordinator
    10 x Sequitors

And no word if the Lord Arcanum on Gryph Charger and the female Knight Incantor will be available seperately.

Then there are the three models they haven't previewed yet:

    Knight Incantor (male)
    179817978_KnightIncantor2.jpg.9ca1e91694c05592de1c499a941c2d18.jpg

    Lord Arcanum on foot
    809990572_LordArcanum.jpg.40239bb066224280dadb7153d8ede379.jpg

Sequitor Hero with sword and shield
    Sacrosanct.jpg.b612d25632ec8e5e7afabdaf5fd5009f.jpg

    Am I missing any?

In fact, I think you got one dubious kit here.

5x Castigators? That's not even a matched legal unit. They would release a 6x multipart kit. But with no options on the warscroll, why would they? Plus, has there be any hints of Castigators besides the SW and easy to build models?

  8. 1 hour ago, mystycalchemy said:

That last line sums them up. No special weapons, no unknown rules, they are exactly as they appeared in Soul Wars. They are required for a few battalions though.

Either those battalions are decent (and not overpriced), or they will go into eBay so fast their heads will spin ?

Does anyone know the spells for the Lord Arcanum on foot, on Dracoline (generic) and on Tauralon (generic)? The battletome review I watched mentioned the LA on Gryph-charger being his favourite due to the healing spell, so I inferred the others have different ones.

  9. Right now I'm at a weird point at which I don't know if I should get Soul Wars or wait for the battletome and buy units separately.

Sequitors are at an odd number, multipart Evocators look a lot better, Castigators are pretty meh (and have the ETB kit anyway) and I don't need the Lord Arcanum (I will wait for the Tauralon). Only things I really need are the Incantor and the Balista.

Damn GW! This box is a trap!

  10. More news from a Battletome review:

Staunch changed to wholy within but range 9 and stacks with cover.

Consummate Commander gives a CP on a 4+.

One-use ítem only for Arcanums and Incantors (AFAIR) can shut a wizard for a whole turn.

Tempestors and Hurricane Raptors bring their debuff in an aura, only by being there.

Al Dracoths now use the 12" breath.

So scions of the storm confirmed. No roll needed but have to arrive turn 1,2 or 3. also -1 to hit when they arrive. So why not deploying everything in the realm then. :)

That's awesomesauce. You won't deploy everything in Azyr as there is a limitation: only half your units can good there.

    This changes our tactics forever.

Chainghasts' having a ranged attack caught me completely by surprise

Yeah, and it being almost as good as the empowered shots of the shooting-oriented SCE Castigators is even more of a head-scratcher.

Sounds like the Celestant prime gets a buff in the new battletome. Starts on 3 attacks plus some other new abilities.

Staunch defender now wholly within. I think it's the same range.

Lightening chariot reworked and renamed to translocation. Now counts as a setup, 9 inches from an enemy model. The translocated model is -1 to hit for that turn (not sure if battle round).

Making the Prime decent for his cost instead of lowering points sounds like the right thing to do. Staunch sounds more limited (one unit in range at most?) but at least we keep it. New LC sounds great!

Some people have mentioned the Lord Exorcist is 140 points... He's terrible if that's the case.

The Incantor is so much better for the same points. He won't be seeing any tables except in Narrative games, in anti Nighthaunt tailored lists.

At War of Sigmar where they summarise today's article they saysstormhost "bonus/options are added to one offered by choosing SE keyword (deepstrike, -1 to hit vs SE on deep strike turn)"

Interesting, Scions won't be more reliable but if you take the risk it offers a bigger advantage?

    Better than we have now.

  15. 1 minute ago, mystycalchemy said:

Based on what they mentioned in the article from left to right:

Hammers of Sigmar, Hallowed Knights, Celestial Vindicators, Celestial Warbringers, Anvils of the Heldenhammer, Tempest Lords.

Surprised to see no Astral Templars or Knights Excelsior

Bit aren't Tempest Lords dark-blue/blackish? The last one is kind if white-ish: Knights Excelsior?

This is exactly how I was already playing it, but it's good to get official confirmation

Lightning Chariot and Pennant of the Stormbringer were already like that, as they didn't include these kind of clauses, which now have been clarified.

But good news for us anyway!

  17. The FAQ states any set-up abilities that "count as their move for the movement phase (or words to that effect)" restrict the unit from moving later, but don't count as having moved.

If rules don't change in the new Battletome, units coming from pursuit (Astral Compass, Azurite Hurricane) or from Scions can shoot as if stationary. Hello 140 points alpha-striking Hurricane Raptors!

Not  over 18 inch. Under 18 inch the balistas are better.

That's for only 6" of the Judicators range. The other 18", the Balista is better. From 24" to 36", the Balista is 100% better.

To sum up, only for 1/6 of the Balista range it is worse than Judicators. Sounds like a better deal to me.

  19. 15 minutes ago, Erdemo86 said:

220 for Solbright, 360 for Aventis, 140 for Lord Exorcist

I really like the Sacrosant models, but feel like the only models who will be worth it for competitive are Sequitors.(with lord arcanum as general)

Think the only things i will pick up are 2 units of 5 Sequitors with swords and a Arcanum on foot or Dracoline. Maybe a balista, but i feel like Judicators are more consistent and better.

240 for Lord Arcanum on Dracoline and 340 for Lord Arcanum on Tauralon, too. Generic versions.

If you run the numbers, you will see the Balista is a lot better than Judicators for the price.

Since opinions are being thrown around here's my take.

Was very intrigued from the bits of previews we saw from the art on the tauralon but after seeing it, it's a no go for this consumer. The head is just too silly for me to take seriously and the overall feel of the beast is just too... off.

They could of done a horse/pegasus theme (turned up to eleven) and I would of been more pleased.

I understand it's a fantasy setting but I do appreciate designs grounded in reality,  if that makes sense.

The Dracoline on the other hand, props to the sculptor(s). It feels like a real animal. Sold on that one.

    Just my opinion.

I'm just exactly the opposite. I find the Dracoline ugly as sin. What's it supposed to be? Half feline? And we are supposed to see that from the clumsy claws, the ape face, or the Sonic the hedgehog "mane"?

I can't make any sense out of them.
