  1. These models done by 'eavy metal aren't the final plastic models though. They are "grown resin" models (think 3D-printed) that require a lot of work by the team like filing and gap filling. They are also done years in advance of release.

I was able to have a nice chat with the eavy metal team in Dusseldorf and got some hands on time with the original black coach model. They actually used some blue tac  to keep parts of it together too... :D Doesn't matter, as they are just used for a photo shoot, not for any gaming.

Somebody did drop the ball hard on that one though. I can imagine this particular model would be a nightmare if it was made from grown resin however.

    Lets grab some facts:

    - few entries

    - old miniatures (some of them look even older compared to actual GW top miniatures)

    - no machine or ranged

I don't see how this army will diffenciate from other fast and furious melee ones...

    But:

    - chaos aligned: choice of 4 main gods means alllied to other chaos factions. But what can they add different to what we already have?

In the end of the day: I love that we have new battletome but I hate missing opportunities. They could have done it with the all NON ALIGNED chaos factions at once: beasts+slaves+overchosen, then we have a huge opportunity to refresh our army (but without refresshing the miniatures...)

my feelings are a bit balanced with a tendency to (a light) negativity.

I don't know about the first part: few entries. Looks like a very solid amount of unit entries compared to many other battletomes out there now.  It's not going to be the largest, but above average in term of unit entries for sure.

I'm not sure about how old the miniature range is exactly.  But most of it is from 6th edition warhammer? So they can't be more than a decade old.

I'm not sure what the rules team made of it, but a melee army more aimed around stealth and ambush tactics could sound like fun.

  3. Tbh, this looks more like a "Legions of Nagsh treatment" (besides the scenery/spells), rather than a "Daughters of Khaine treatment".

Which isn't a bad thing, A lot of the beastman/monster range holds up quite well (just like most of the LoN models, they aren't catastrophically old like grots/greenskins).

  4. I'm very well aware of how GW doesn't want to show anything too soon... I was however hoping to see a bit more of one of the flagship games for an event that actually has a pretty steep price tag on it (compared to lots of other wargame conventions around here). The last version in the UK had a good balance between AoS (with the soulwars release), adeptus titanicus, imperial knights, blood bowl,... previews.

Now, it's completely focused on the scifi side of GW, with 2 tiny little teasers for anything AoS related. When they charge €30 euro plus parking fee for an event, it would actually be nice if it's slightly more balanced, even if  it means looking a bit further into the future. They even have previews of sisters of battle stuff that aren't even coming in a year from now, so I'm not sure how well that argument holds up.

I'll see what it's like tomorrow. Looking at GD will be cool, hopefully I can have a fun chat with one of the designers and painters of GW, but in the future, I really do hope they balance things out better. I'd be equally annoyed if I were a 40k fan and didn't get to see any new model because all the models being showed were AoS.

  5. I'm not too looking forward to the the next few weeks for AoS. I actually do plan on going tomorrow to Warhammer Fest, but the fact that it was 95% 40k universe stuff was putting me off. So I asked about this being worthwhile as an AoS fan first and this is the response:

Is it admitting that almost no AoS stuff is on the horizon anytime soon?  Just shadespire and whatever that one picture of an endless spell is? Doesn't even look like I'll be able to see the thing in the flesh tomorrow, so it's all put a bit of a negative spin on what was supposed to be a fun day out.

  6. The rust is done by hand and a very easy process too:

It's a basecoat of leadbelcher, a wash of army painter dark tone (agrax will do just as well), then a mix of matt varnish mixed with vallejo rust pigments (essentially a wash that dries in a "powdery way". A final highlight of steel or silver is then applied, and some micro scratches if I want it to look slightly more fancy.

    Hi, absolutely brilliant!

I'm a little color-blind, what colors did you use for the skintones of the flesh-eaters?

    Thanks!

I used vallejo model colours Grey blue and pale Grey blue. Both thinned down with vallejo airbrush thinner and applied in a zenithal airbrush layer.

If they don't change the "needs to be a general" part for this unit, then there's only the mounted KoS with a command ability that doesn't need them to be the general, right? Am I missing something here - why would NH want more than the normal 1 per turn command point? For the normal command abilities every army gets?

I agree, I've been looking around for more heroes that were not announced yet, and so far, there are very few models that actually have use of CP.

KoS on foot: has a general limitation (and he's waaaaay to fragile to be a general, he's stuck in AoS 1: a borderline useless low wound charcter)
KoS on horse: can use his command ability without restrictions.
Lady Olynder: has to be the general for her command abilty. Wouldn't be surprised if she HAS to be the general when present (like other mortarchs) and has this weird wording about having other friendly models that have the command ability.

My educated guess is that all characters in the army might get this "no rest for the wicked" command ability and that this will become the equivalent of the nighthaunt "deathly invocation", but costing CP (in the same style that Legions of Nagash come with a special command ability as an army trait: endless legions).

And if you slap Olynder in there, this "no rest for the wicked" daisy chains through your army.

I think it's pretty certain the KoS will get a warscroll overhaul when the battletome drops. He might just get the same command ability as the mounted version (I hope not, for variety) but if he doesn't then at the very least the wording will be changed to reflect the way command points work now.

Do you think so? On a model that's been released after the first book was dropped that had AoS2 in mind (MoN)?

If they did put that book (malign portents) in print, know the wording would have to be changed in less than half a year, I don't know what's worse... that they couldn't plan ahead for that short a time, or that they released 4 models that don't mix well with their future ruleset.

  10. If the whole of the nighthaunt range moves to "unmodified rolls of 6" for the mortal wound trigger, the knight of shrouds on foot is the most useless model in the range... Especially since he still needs to be the general for some bizarre reason to even use his (possibly pointless) command ability.

If that's the case, the KoS is such a poorly designed warscroll.

  11. Olynder is a mortarch but not a deathlord...feels like an omission.

This feels very "you are on the Jedi counsel, but we do not grant you the title of master"-ish

Very ridiculous after even minor characters like Tamra Von Drak became deathlord in the novels.

  12. Olynder is a maniac for 240p! Reikenor can also be pretty darn nasty for his points cost. The craven king denying your CPs is going to be insane as well. I'm really surprised at how good they are... Although their wounds stat probably reflects that point cost as well. They are pretty fragile for their points cost. Look out sir will work for all of them though.

However, the fact that Olynder is a mortarch without the DEATHLORD keyword, annoys me more than it should....

Wow! These turned out great!!! I'm  also going blues on my spooks. Would you mind sharing your colors on those, please?

That's a base of baharoth blue airbrushed over the underlaying coat (rhinox hide in this case), followed by an airbrush layer of white near the bottom of the ethereal bits, given a coat of 50/50 mix of guilliman blue/matt varnish (lahmian medium would also work) and given final highlights of white.

Let me ask you a question, Elmir.

Did you use cork for your rocks and later turned to slate? And where did you get your slate, I can't seem to find an online supplier whose slate is fine enough to use.

    Thank you

I started out making my "slate" out of miliput which I rolled out with a dough roller between 2 sheets of baking paper.

I swapped over to real slate after a while because I had stumbled on a suitable bag at a local gardener shop. I do take some of the larger pieces of slate and whack them into tinier bits with a hammer though. Slate is prone to breaking into horizontal slices, so it requires a bit of extra work, but it's a lot cheaper than doing hundreds of bases with miliput (and I like the look of it better as well).
