What’s your goal with the army? Casual collecting or Competitive Crush All Comers List? How much effort are you willing to put into it?

I always advise patience if you aren’t 100% decided on a list (ex. A Battleforce or similar box may be a really good deal).

Lizardmen also have a good number of lots on eBay that with some TLC can be a cheaper deal

ETA: On Kroak vs other Slann, you can always run Kroak as a Counts As.

Goal:  Two part.  Fun hobby, plus occasional games against 40k players who dabble in AoS (and who I can usually at least match with any stack of ****** I choose to play - I won our escalation league a couple years back with Savage Orruks minus Arrowboys)

Patience:  I have the spousely green light to go now, so I'm a-gonna go now.  Haha.

eBay: I don't really do eBay these days. Lol

Proxy: does Kroak have the same base size as a Slann?  I actually haven't looked that up.  Wait, I'm on the internet... [pause] No, it looks like Slann is 50mm and Kroak is 80mm.  But I could definitely do it in the sort of casual games I usually play.  Or maybe do something crazy with two bases and magnets?  I like crazy...

  2. OK, I'm starting a Seraphon army from scratch, with my tax return money coming in soon.

Here's what I've got in my Cart on the GW web store.  Does it look reasonable?  If you had a similar budget, and were starting from scratch, what would you do differently?

For reference, This comes out to about CAD650, USD560, GBP340

    • Start Collecting: Seraphon
    • Start Collecting: Skinks
    • Lord Kroak
    • Stegadon
    • Skinks
    • Terradon Riders
    • Saurus Guard

I hemmed and hawed about Kroak vs. Slann plus another box.  Ended up going Rule of Cool for a Kroak.  Could be convinced otherwise.

I saw that on my Facebook group, thanks for the picture though! I'm saving my "likes" and what not for later today, otherwise I'd like your post.

I'm not saving Likes so I spent one on your behalf.  #TeamPlayer

I can totally see Throt the Unclean returning from oblivion with a new mutation of giant murderous rabbits with warpstone on the ears

I sure hope so - I just painted a lovely metal Throt the Unclean a couple weeks ago haha.

To me this is just as ridiculous as the bloke who burnt his Dark Elf WHFB army.

Dont people enjoy having the minis that they paid a lot of money and spent the time to build and paint? The hobby is more than just whatever is in the Meta right now cant you still play for fun without having to win every single time?

What happens if next Edition they become a top tier army? Are they going to buy/waste their money on a whole Faction once again? It just seems ridiculous to me.

Just this - imagine the hobby whiplash with, for example, Flesheater Courts or Slaanesh?  Year to year either of those have been Z-tier, S-tier, and other places in between.

  6. I'm so glad I haven't read the Skaven battletome yet.  I'm about a thousand points in to my painting project (I looked at points, minimum unit sizes, and base sizes, and some Googling to figure out what the heck some of my second-hand models even are, but that's all) and I have no idea what anything does.  And it is EXHILARATING!  Such freedom!

  7. The trick that I've noticed in myself with small games in general is that the more time I spend thinking about my list ahead of time, the less fun the games end up being.

If I whip together something and play it, and my opponent does something similar, we both have a nice time win or lose.  If either or both of us spend a bunch of time fine tuning the best list we can get, the game isn't as fun.  It feels like there are more stakes.

I started a gaggle of swamp-themed Gloomspite. Night Goblins we’re one of the first things I painted and collected as a small boy and I found myself feeling very nostalgic, so that was that.

It’s going slowly but I’m enjoying taking my time over them. Trying to give each grot a sense of character. 🌙

  9. So I'm starting a new army project in a completely different way from what I've ever done before.

It's Skaven - I traded for a random pile of Skaven models.

I'm familiar in a general sort of way with Skaven, I can identify most of the units by sight, and I know vaguely about the Skryre/Moulder/Eshin/Pestilens divide.  However, I don't have a Skaven battletome (of any vintage) and don't really know what Skaven things do in AoS (of any vintage) other than in the most general sort of way.

I am deliberately NOT looking at lists or rules.

The only concession I am making to rules at this point is 1) base sizes and 2) unit sizes.  For bases - all the models I picked up were on (or came with) square bases, so I'm following the published base size guidelines.  For unit sizes, I have a single blister with two Plague Censer Bearers, I see unit size 5, so I'm setting them aside until I pick up 3 more.  I have 17 Night Runners, I see unit size 10, so I'm setting 7 aside.  That sort of thing.  Building legal units, but without further regard for rules.

So far, I'm pretty enthusiastic about the project.  Once I get everything I currently have painted, *then* I'll start looking at rules, and seeing what I want to add.

Like the subject says, this is a completely new way of going about hobbying up a new army for me.  I've always started projects, even second hand/reclamation projects, with a pile of plastic/metal/resin in one had, and a rulebook in the other hand.  Stuff that is not "good" in a list gets shoved aside, left to the end, forgotten.  This time, I'm painting all of it without ever knowing if it's good.  Are Doomflayers good?  No idea!  But I've already painted one.  What about Gutter Runners?  A unit of 5 little rats seems so weedy.  But they're MY painted weedy little buggers.

Has anyone else tried something like this - not necessarily following this blueprint, but doing a new project in a completely different way from what you normally would?

I think S2D feel a bit confused as a faction; part of their allegiance ability feels like it wants you to run "Grand Alliance: Chaos Mortals", part of it wants you to run mono-mark thanks to the hero needed for Aura of Chaos, part of it wants cultists to be a key part to the army despite (for a long time until a few months ago) not benefitting from marks, and part of it is focused on narrative rules with Eye of the Gods. It's overall a cool book that feels like it bit off more than it could chew, and many warscrolls that leave a lot to be desired.

Having a mixed mark army should still be possible for those who've created one and like the idea of all mortals gathering under Archaon's banner, but the core S2D book needs a look at. It's held back by trying to be so many things at once but never really feeling like it achieves its goal of simulating a grand host of unstoppable Chaos Warriors.

Yeah, ultimately the core of my frustration is that I would like for Option 1 for the book to not be as a farm team to feed individual units to other factions, but to be a thing for itself.  It's not the Marks themselves (although I definitely prefer Undivided for StD), it's the way it feels like all we are doing is adding to other lists and not being our own list.

Something can both sell EXTREMELY well and also be so stupidly overproduced that it still sits on shelves and webstores for months. It definitely happened with Dominion, and I'm still slightly salty I got it for the full 200$

Haha I got mine for full price at my friendly local, so that smooths over the salt (I like those guys and don't begrudge them the money).

  12. A random post in another thread made me think of this actual unpopular opinion (by "unpopular" I mean I suspect many people would disagree).

Slaves to Darkness and Beasts of Chaos should all be dedicated to Chaos Undivided, with no options for single-god Marks.

Any units that you would put in single-god armies belong in that other faction's book.  So Nurgle-Marked Chaos Warriors or Pestigors (for example) would be in the Maggotkin of Nurgle Battletome, not the StD or BoC Battletomes.

All that you would find in the StD and BoC Battletomes would be un-Marked units.

    UNPOPULAR!

  13. During my struggle with mental health one of my two main self-identified symptoms (the other was a couple episodes of hiding under my desk at work to cry) was a total loss of interest in hobbying.

The loss of interest in the hobby was the "final straw" that led me to finding help.  Medication and counselling later, and I'm hobbying like a madman again (and sitting at my desk rather than crying under it).

  14. The trivial answer of "What makes you start a new army" is that I start a new army when I finish the current one.

Getting to what you're really asking, "What makes you start a particular new army?" - it's almost always based on starting from a core of models I already have in my collection.  I've got bits and pieces of kits and units going back a couple decades - NIB, second hand, 3rd party, etc - such that I could start almost any faction with at least a few models as a head start.

I've got a dozen or more painted armies - only twice in my life have I ever just grabbed a bunch of new kits and started an army from zero (once in 99/00 with starter box Lizardmen, and then circa 2016 when I did a bunch of commission painting for my FLGS and took some Flesheater Courts starter boxes as payment)
