  1. Tournaments have become popular near me so I'm transitioning away from narrstive and towards more competitive lists.

Do small armies of big models work? For example:

    1 Kragnos

    2 Frostlord on Stonehorn

    1 Icebrow Hunter

    3x2 Frost Sabres

  2. There's plenty of YouTube channels out there that do "reviews" of new AOS battletomes and other gaming books (General's Handbook, Campaign Books, etc.). But it seems every time I click on one of those, it's a 30 minute long (or longer) video of someone reading through every single page of the book and telling you what's on each page in detail. That's not what I am looking for when I look for a review. What I'm looking for is someone who has read and really dissected the book to give me a brief overview of: what's new, what's changed, first impressions, an overview of what the faction's play style is like (if it's a battletome), opinions on whether the changes are good, etc. I don't want someone to read me every warscroll and walk me through every battalion; I just want them to give me an overview and maybe pick out a few of the cool things to mention.

Is anyone aware of a YouTube channel that does these kind of reviews? All I seem able to find when I search for reviews is people reading you the whole damn book. I'm looking for a bird's eye view, I'm not interested in someone telling me every detail.

Why? The whole purpose of the 25 min quick battle report is to showcase strats/how the army plays. It is not to show off how well you painted your figs.

Because it's ugly and unappealing. You can't even really tell what's what in the Lumineth army; it all looks like blobs of gray.

always a good channel. Yes some mistakes on rules and maybe on tactics but still nice to see the giants really putting out the damage.

on the hobby side just working on my bases. One of my favourite parts of big models is using real stones in the basing. Will post pics once done just gluing the stones and sand currently.

also I’m going to adorn my Gargants with pieces of my old Tomb Kings army I guess the real reason they got wiped out was really the rise of the Gargants.

That might have been worth watching had they taken the time to paint their models.

So listened to the brutal HWG AoS monday episode tonight review of the battletome.

    A few points to note:

    - army can't cast endless spells, as krakeneater artefact doesn't give the wizard keyword. Same for dispelling endless spells.

    - warstomper, with 1 big and 9 small is probably the strongest build.

    - due to an FAQ on allowed publications, the 2 merc companies from Forbidden Power are currently matched play legal. So ally in an archregent for a double caster to get those endless spells casts/dispels, plus summoning 20 ghouls for backline objective holding/screens.

    - Longshanks ability doesn't allow you to move over units in standard movement. Base of mega-garant is 130mm + 3" stay out of range of opponent + 25mm minimum base size of opposing unit + another 3" stay out of range of opponent from otherside of their base = 12.10", so it only works retreating or running. It can't be used during the charge phase or piling in, as they aren't normal moves. Without run and charge, it's not great and very situational, as retreating or running means no charges. (this info is from the plastic craic review)

There is lots of other info from the HWG episode and they hit a lot of points home. Highly recommend listening to it.

I still plan to do the army, but at least now I'm not going into it with rose tinted titanic warclubs 😂

Where can I find this episode?

Personally, I never expected it to be a competitive army. I'm looking forward to having a fun army that lets me play games where I don't have to think too much or keep track of too many things. I used to have an army like that, my Beastclaw Raiders, and then they released a battletome that completely changed the way they play. It'll be nice to have an army where I can just stomp around without having to keep track of a bunch of things again.

I have been semi tempted at jumping at the SoB but one thing that kept me from it was painting such huge models. This seems rather easy and very doable for someone like me. Im sure the paintjob could have been done better, but it looks imo great and I would happily throw that bad boy on the table and stomp some guys.

I've actually found that larger models are easier to paint. Painting tiny straps, belts, necklaces, teeth, and other minutiae on regular sized models is what I find most challenging since staying within the lines can be so difficult when you're dealing with tiny things like that. You don't run into that issue as much with larger models; you get a lot more room to move the brush around even if you have shaky hands or sub-par fine motor skills.

  7. The Matched Play rules in the current General's Handbook proscribe 5 pieces of terrain; 3 of them large (up to 10" across at its widest point and 18" tall at its tallest) and 2 of them small (Up to 6" across at its widest point and up to 6" at its tallest point). Matched Play is for evenly matched competitive-style games. In addition to that, many factions have their own faction terrain which they will add to the table (in addition to those pieces).

For other game formats that aren't as focused on balance/fairness/competitiveness, the Core rules recommend one piece of terrain for every 2 square feet of play area. But you can really do whatever you want. I recommend just making the table look as cool as possible. Create a world you would like to play in, then play in it.

  8. The complexity of AoS has increased so much over the last few years that there's now a significant learning curve when it comes to learning how to use your army. Even after you have designed it, it takes a lot of practice to memorize the major stats and remember all of the: stacked bonuses, special abilities, etc. From a practical perspective, how do you do this so that your first games with your new army don't take you 3 hours?

I know an escalation league or Path to Glory campaign are great ways to do this but that requires convincing a few other players that it's time to do such a campaign even if you're really the only one learning a new army.

I'm thinking maybe I should split my army into two and somehow play a number of solo games against myself using those army halves in order to familiarize myself with the units and the army in general. Has anyone done this?

What other tricks do you use to learn a new army?

  9. Personally, lore has never mattered to me. I doubt I've read more than 20% of the lore in the battletomes I already own, even for my main armies. So, no I would not buy such a book. However, I really liked the format of the old "The Realmgate Wars" books which included lore/narrative content alongside additional battleplans, battalions, and other game content. I never got around to purchasing any of them because I always felt the price point was too high but I would purchase them at a lower price point.

You're right becaus AFAIK nothing was writen about it.

Except about GW said that you have to use the more recent publication of any rule that could invalidate the re-writen firestorm alligence (now present in CoS), I dont know about anything officially said Malign portent.

For mercenary you have the info in the GhB2020 Designer com' (https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/66ywBB8J1iRGh4t9.pdf )

Q: Can I use rules from older publications in Pitched Battle (2020) games, such as Mercenary Companies from the General’s Handbook 2019?

A: Yes, but only if your opponent agrees or a house rule permits it.

Unfortunatly I dont have better than that to give to you.

I reckon for Firestorm, it was simply in the FaQ (https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/age_of_sigmar_firestorm_errata_en.pdf😞

Page 54-55 – Choosing Your AllegianceThese rules are no longer used. Use the most recent core rules instead.

So still a no a complet no with no exception ;)

I think that fully answers it for those two. The only question left is whether Malign Portents Heralds are still a thing then. The latest Errata for that book still says they are, but that errata hasn't been updated since 2018.

    Here's what it says:

    Quote

The following rule can be used by players who wish to use these models in their armies in open, narrative or matched play games not using the Malign Portents rules.Lord-Ordinators, Darkoath Warqueens, Knights of Shrouds and Fungoid Cave-Shamans can be included in any army that shares their Grand Alliance keyword. They are not treated as part of the player’s army for the purposes of defining its allegiance and what allegiance abilities it qualifies for. Lord-Ordinators, Darkoath Warqueens, Knights of Shrouds and Fungoid Cave-Shamans can be given a command trait or artefact of power if they share the keyword of that army’s allegiance. However, a Lord-Ordinator, Darkoath Warqueen, Knight of Shrouds or Fungoid Cave-Shaman can be chosen as the army’s general even if they do not share the keyword of that army’s allegiance.

  11. I'm unclear on what rules are considered valid by default in the current game. Some of these rules are old and seem to have been forgotten but they were originally intended to be legal for Matched Play and I can't find anything that says they were removed. So, for example:

    1. Can you still take your Grand Alliance Herald from Malign Portents?

    2. Can you still choose a Firestorm City allegiance like "Tempest's Eye" or "Greywater Fastness"?

    3. Can you still take Mercenaries from the General's Handbook 2019 list?

  12. I've dreamed of fielding an army of giants since I first picked up AoS. I'm the only person I know who regular uses the Aleguzzlers despite their lackluster stats based purely on how much I like their looks. So, to say I'm excited about this is an understatement. This could be the army I always dreamed of having (assuming this is an all or mostly giants army).

I'd love to attach somekind of info like that to this points list. Models like Salamanders can make this game very sketchy. That's why my first idea was not to include them. As the rules say no Behemoths and no Artillery. But maybe some kind of nerf could work.

I agree it would be better not to include them. If people want to add broken things, they should be required to work out the rules with their friends.

Thank you! Quite possibly you could. That would do well for some of the characters and cultists. The regular line could be Free People Militia and Night Haunt spirit hosts smoothed together. And obviously much of it is to give another way to get wights on the table so, they're always an option :-)

They would also be a great counterpoint to the Skaven burrowing through reality. The mounds could be filled with the detritus of what they burrowed through.

Yeah, I think that would be great. I think at first, upon seeing such an army I'd be like "wth? you can't be serious". But once the backstory gets explained, that would switch to "oh hell yeah, let's do this!".

The Cults of the Barrow Kings.

In the lands of the dead, mortals can find themselves lost and out of place. Interring their ancestors into giant barrows, the cults of the barrow kings provide them with an intermediary to the God of the Dead.

Acting as priests, mentors and protectors, the ancestors of the mortals guide them through life so that they can become productive members of the deathly procession.

The idea is to have mortals fighting alongside the dead. Skeletons and the like will be the elite as they're old and angry and suffused by the power of Shyish. The mortal units will have multiple wound bases to represent the ancestor and his descendant, but shouldn't be elite powerful units.

    Eld feared (elder fjord)
The militia of the cult. They carry a fetish of their ancestor which allows one of the minor ancestral priests to accompany them.
2 Wounds, representing a man with his spirit ancestor.
        1 attack = 1/5+/5+/-1/1
1 attack = Guy with spear

Shouldn't be much more effective than a normal milita man.

Eld carls (Carls of the elders)
The 'elite' battleline unit. They wear the bones of the ancestors, now becoming steel-hard after being infused with the energy of violent deatrhs. Carrying glaives made of the bones of the ancestor.

        2 Wounds. A reasonable save (4+)?
Similar attacks as the eld feared but with a better attack for the carl.

    Bone sacrementals (Bone priests)
Minor priests. A man wearing bone armour. The armour will have it's own arms as it is becoming able to fight on it's own.

4 wounds, losing ancestor bonus after 2 wounds.
Ancestor bonus: Extra movement due to anscestor. 2 rending attacks.
Minor mortal attack, but generally used to restore and reintegrate ancestors
for the battlelines. Can restore 1 wound to d3 units each.

    Eld guard (Elder guards)
After many mortal lifetimes being carried into battle, the elders can now enter battle themselves.

2 Wounds, reasonable save. No reduction in capability as they take wounds
Should be able to go toe-to-toe with a Stormcast.

    Barrow King
A Wight king effectively. Should be capable in combat, but as a major priest of the cult will exhort mortals and guard to greater hights.

    Mysteriarch
The High Priest of the Cult. Large and combat-capable priest with prayers to Nagash. A mortal who had all the bones of previous Mysteriarch implanted into him. Swollen with the power of Shyish, multiple arms spreading from his back.

8 wounds, reducing ancestor bonus after every 2 wounds.
Capable of taking on chaff units, not a monster killer.

    The King Under The Barrow
Most barrows will have accreted around a warrior, fallen in battle defending the World That Was. Many will be the channel between the ancestors and Nagash, some though are biding they time waiting for the time to strike, others are still fighting the old battles. Should provide the mystery and uncertainty about loyalties that every army needs.

This guy should be Ogre-big and scary. Not a chaff-slayer, but will go one-to-one against other combat beasts.

I love your idea. But I wonder if you couldn't just do this already by mixing models from the Death line with some of the priests and flagellants of the Devoted of Sigmar faction. Sure, you wouldn't get the special bonuses of the units you came up with, but you could have the whole backstory. I would love if one of the locals had an army like that in my area.

  16. I would love an asian themed army with ninja, samurai, warrior monks, oriental style dragons, etc. But that already seems to be a popular choice. So I'll add something else to the mix.

Imagine a were-beast army. I picture these being nomadic barbarian-style human tribes. Each warrior has a special affinity with a certain animal spirit which they can transform into during battle. Their armies would include regular barbarian human units along with more elite were-beast units. A possible play mechanic might be for the human units to have the ability to transform into their beast form during battle; perhaps when they fail their battleshock rolls, instead of fleeing, the warriors are enraged into a frenzy and transform into their beast form.
