There are arguments to be made for all of them, but you will probably find yourself using the Shaman variant in most Spiderfang builds or even broad Gloomspite builds that bring an Arachnarok.  The non-shaman variants feel like they will mainly be used in armies that are taking multiple Arachnaroks - which most pure Spiderfang armies will want to do,

Ok, yeah this is a pretty good sum up.

  2. I feel most lists benefit from at least 2 casters. Another shaman would give you some more utility and is cheap as chips. After that I’d do a boss on Squig and another set of Squig riders (think that should fit, don’t have my book on hand) this is just for more consistency of command abilities and objective scoring. If you are worried about drops then I’d just up Squig units like you said and still add at least the boss on Squig

Their primary role is space denial and bodies on objectives. Honestly if you take them as 20 stabbas it's functionally equivalent in terms of expected ranged damage output. As an example, against a 6+ save a unit of 17 Shootas and 3 Netters has an expected damage output of around 2.3. It's arguable that the Moonclan Shields add more to the unit than the bows do.

The bodies are important for space holding and the reason I included them is purely because of avalible models. If you are building them from scratch do them with stabbas and shields as those are the most broadly useful. (spears are second, see the discussion a few pages ago over stabbas vs spears

Well the nice part is its not a matter of building them as I have more than one man needs in varying loadouts so its an easy swap.

Now finally getting around to painting 200+ grots will be the real ticket. I painted a few back when AoS first dropped but with the new book I found a better scheme I like so that will require some repainting and rebasing.

    Cheers

  4. @Malakree lol my bad on the loonboss, I miss read and thought you said he was on a giant squig.

You make some excellent points and I'm going to be using them as I finalize this list. I will also be checking out zarbag. With so many wizards though I'm now thinking of dropping the shootas, the more I hear about em the less I want to take them. I remember running them a year or so ago with my ironjawz as some range and feeling lackluster.

@DINOSTAR oh don't worry I have a "fun" list where I take a few HQs and the rest of 2000 pts is grots...lots and lots of grots lol

Personally I would go for the 60x60 stabbas and 20 Shootas as shootas are bad at more than 20s and it gives you two large blocks to play with in terms of holding objectives. I think my starting point would be something like this.

Puts a ton of models on the board, makes great use of the Gobbapalooza and has a lot of magical capability. While probably not optimal I think as a starting point it will give you a good feel for what you like/don't like which imo is more important than a perfect list.

Lol that is pretty similar to the list I have going. Few things though, why the boss on squig since I wouldn't be running other squigs and also why are shootas bad at scaling up past 20? I was in the idea that frequency of shots would help them get past their squig poo aim?

Is Zarbag worth his tax of the random gaggle of posse in this list? I honestly have yet to ever consider him in the ideas I have been coming up with except as a generic shaman since he has a good model.

Finally is 5 sniffers ok? I was worried about that and I have been doing groups of 10 so they don't get blown up.

Anyhow, thanks for the tips and advice!

  6. When building a total grot list I’m thinking a 60/60/20 spread with the 20 being shootas. If I didn’t want to add other units that would be 60’s across all three as I love em gitz but I had to cut down a little for support. Anyhow what do you guys think on that spread? Should I change it to 60/40/40? Or is that still too many grots and I should add more support?

I doubt it would actually be all that good, but I kinda want to drop this on a table just to watch my opponents face as I deploy 200 minis

    Allegiance: Gloomspite Gitz

    Leaders
    Loonboss (70)
    Madcap Shaman (80)
    - Lore of the Moonclans: The Great Green Spite

    Battleline
    60 x Stabbas (360)
    - Pokin Spears & Moon Shields
    60 x Stabbas (360)
    - Pokin Spears & Moon Shields
    60 x Stabbas (360)
    - Pokin Spears & Moon Shields

    Units
    5 x Sporesplatta Fanatics (120)
    5 x Loonsmasha Fanatics (140)
    5 x Loonsmasha Fanatics (140)
    5 x Sneaky Snufflers (70)

    Battalions
    Moonclan Skrap (120)
    Skilkmob Horde (160)

    Total: 1980 / 2000
    Extra Command Points: 2
    Allies: 0 / 400
    Wounds: 214

I came up with a list very similar but replaced 1 unit of stabbas with 20 shootas, then took 2 spore fanatics and 1 loon fanatics so I could have points for another lion boss and a fungoid shaman.

  8. So in prepping for my battletomb I started painting my grots, ran one test scheme and I think I’m sold! They still need some highlights and small details but 200 of em should look good! The only question is where in the mortal realms could red grots be plausible? I haven’t been keeping up and soon I’ll have to rebase em all to rounds.

  9. Hey, so unfortunately due to funds I had to hold off on getting the gloomspite book but I was wondering if people think max blocks of night goblins is good for battle line and what kinda support should I give them? I have almost 300 night goblins so I can just spam the field with them but was wondering how they fair in the new book. What is good to support them? Every list I see is on the squig or troll kick so I was looking to give the foot soldiers love lol

  10. 10 sounds about right for the kit, and I can believe it cause yeah all the pictures have shown 10.

Of coarse it’s not like squig hoppers were cheap before either. And they were only 5 to begin with.

As for scuttlings, I got about 30 something so I hope they get a better unit profile. But if not they make great netters by looking like spiders and by adding variety to your 60 grot blocks of doom! Lol

one thing I just thought of that I hope for the book is the return of skarsniks command ability, the one where grots deal MW when they retreat! Oh I looovvveeeedddd that.

  11. Oh man, this release is gonna be clearing my paycheck from now till 2020....and I’m not even mad, I’m impressed!

Oh man this army is going to over take the rest of mine lol.

I still am on the centipede train though, I think there is going to be one for the behemoth slot.

So one question. I'm new with gobs and don't know what to do with battlelines and maybe I have to wait but I have 40 spear gobs, 20 bow and 15 spiders. My plan is to leave this way and hide fanatics on that 40 block but... should I buy more to make that 20 into 40 or don't? I wanna go more an animal insects army so I think I don't need more... I just need giant centipede, giant squigs and giant trogloths

I mean if you are just trying to fill battleline slots you should be fine, I don’t have luck with bows but i also only ran them in groups of 20. As for their endurance it was good, they just didn’t kill anything lol

I think I prefer bow and slitta. You get more attacks overall even if it is just a 5+ 5+

Do the bows work well for you though? I have a bunch and eventually stopped using them all together cause I would hardly wound anything after all is said and done. I might be playing them wrong tho.

  14. I always preferred Spears but I also run mine 40-60 range on all squads.....well at that point more like a platoon but ya get the idea lol. I just always figured more to swing with the range benefit. Then again too I have a ton of em and most I got off eBay as Spears

  15. Hey I haven’t been able to play for the better part of this year but was wondering how FEC are doing? From what I read it seems they are in about the same spot I last saw which is kinda a bummer since I was hoping AoS2 would give em something fun.
