This pretty much 100% needs to happen just so Anvils doesn't become a super 'brake-check' list like what Skryre fyre used to be. Because as the rule is currently worded you could take 1 unit of 12 longstrikes, 15 liberators, a Castellant, a relictor with bless weapons and 3 min units of skinks as your whole list and have the longstrikes shoot 14 times in your first turn with 2 layers of chaff to block deepstriking.

The usual blah blah blah applies; what if they shoot you first, what if they can stop your CA, what if they can charge before you shoot, what if they have umbral spellportal, what if objectives, what if yadda, yadda, yadda. The point is that this list is eventually going to find someone who DOESN'T have the tools to stop it and that person is going to have literally their entire army killed in his opponents first hero phase.

I think there's also probably an optimal build of this that doesn't skew as far as possible.  That's more resilient when people do have some of the yadda yadda stuff but still dominates when they don't.  I'm not good enough at list building to know what that will be, but I know that usually the best synergy builds are the ones that only go far enough to get the advantage without opening oneself up to hard counters any more than is absolutely necessary.  There's probably some way to reduce the vulnerability of the combo even further without diluting it too far.

a lot of the faqs that came out yeasterday showed that you can use the same command ability more than once but not on the same units, so well see

Do you mean things like this:

Page 137 – Freeguild General on Griffon, Rousing Battle Cry Add: ‘The same unit cannot be picked to benefit from this command ability more than once in the same phase.’

I wonder if Vandas Hammerhand's ability that effects everyone will be limited like that.  The Orruk Megaboss has a similar ability to add to the attacks value and it made it through the FAQ for the Ironjaws battletome unscathed.

I don't get this at all. They've just made sure the majprity of us don't buy the featured new characters or get to use them. What gives? I was so excited to get these when I saw the pics. Whats the point now. I can't use their command abilities.

As a Hammers of Sigmar player, I totally agree.  This is a pretty silly thing to do.

I'm not getting them because their models are just not as cool as some of the earlier stuff.  The face on that flying thing is just strange.  There are all sorts of interesting knight and lord models I don't have yet and the starter set stormcast wizards seem sufficient without these ones.  And with the Allies rules in matched play and their extension in a different form to Open and Narrative play, I have so many other Order wizards to choose from in every way to play.

Maybe with these characters being ones that appear in the stories like the short stories in the rulebook and glymmforge books as well as the soul wars novel, that people will want them for narrative reasons?

Still can't see that as a reason to make their abilities Hammers of Sigmar only.  Why not have the players be able to decide to have a Hallowed Knights equivalent?  I highly doubt combining these abilities with those of the battallion abilities of any other stormhost that might have some is really going to break anything.

  4. I do both.  The sculpting style of Age of Sigmar stuff keeps me coming back though.  Nice deep details and animated proportions and I find I keep choosing warhammer stuff over historicals in the same plastic.  That said, I am going to be starting an all metal historical project shortly.  It'll still be cheaper than the same number of warhammer miniatures!

When I couldn't justify buying GW prices, I've been happy with games with free rules and 1/72 scale models. I'm happy to accept that your local group (or yourself!) may feel differently.

I did this as well.  I did WW2 and Greeks vs Persians.  So cheap and great gaming.  People often don't value free rules so the ones that people like enough to talk about and play are usually quite good.  It's the same for the AoS fan content.  I find I don't have to watch every little project.  The stuff that's truly worth paying attention to will get mentioned and talked about in podcasts, on blogs, in forum posts and so on.

I know GW has lots going on in terms of their development schedule, but hopefully more armies get the Legends treatment.  I had totally forgotten about some of those dark elf models.  Maybe it'll help some people rediscover some cool models and realise the stuff going for really cheap in the secondary market might be worth paying attention to.

  6. Seems like a game theory approach aggregating to bite everyone  in the ass.  No one can afford to "waste" money on a suboptimal unit so the average level of competition goes up which means cheaper starter and start collecting models are no longer viable, so then the average cost of an army goes up for everyone.

I said most of the time. They are most often a trap, give you stuff for "cheap" techniclly, but those stuff you get for "free" you will never use.

This is one of the reasons I think being overly focused on being competitive can shrink one's gaming experience.  If people make lists with less of an eye to always have the strongest stuff then more warscrolls in a given battle tome are viable for the table top.

I know when I pick units the first thing I do is look at painted examples of the miniatures, then look at pictures of the sprues, then I'll read the fictional entry for the unit in the battletome.  Then I'll check to warscroll to make sure the cool or more important thing about them is actually reflected in the rules.  I guess they'll have a points cost, but I can look that up later if I need to.

The idea of only using a subset of scenario material, a subset of available units, a subset of artefacts/command abilities sounds like a really bad trade off for the sake of trying to win more.

  8. They're really coming together.

I finally got a Stormcast done for Aos28.  I hoping it's enough of a departure from the bright and shiny heroic take on Simarites for AoS28 given it's not modified at all.

  9. Are there any other artillery-like units in any of the other factions?

Despite painting up a salamander just for skirmish gaming, I totally see the merit of leaving them out.  Certainly only include them if there is some sort of note or warning.

Or perhaps a separate section/page along with anything else from other factions that's in this same strange situation of being artillery-like or dishing out tons of easy mortal wounds or whatever.

  10. The target closest model thing worked fine in the second game.  In the first game I just burned down the opposing hero with a lucky damage roll.  It meant my opponent had to think about screening his general and I had to work to remove things with skink javelins or blow darts first if I wanted to shoot at a more important model with the salamander.

As for the Razordon, it's probably a bit much to have it be able to roll 2d6 for its shots and then just split those any way you like.  My instinct is to require half the attacks (rounded up) be allocated to the closest enemy model.

Instinctive Defence should probably change to say "the first time each turn, if an enemy unit ends a charge..." so the opponent can work around it by charging with a regular warrior first.  And all attacks would have to go into the unit that triggered it.

That said, I think if I was playing a game over 100 renown, I'd just run the rules straight.  Target whatever you want and the automatic shooting at full power.  It's basically a 500 point AoS game at that renown level.

  11. I've played two games with a salamander and they are very strong.  We ended up house ruling it that it being a dumb beast has to breath fire at the closest model  I would obviously like it in any PDF for completeness sake (and I will use it) but It might be better off in an separate article about how to use really deadly things in skirmish (which is on my to do list).

Am i the only one who isnt a fan of painting and modelling guides in army books? They feel like filler to me, taking up room that couldve gone to more fluff! On the other hand i do enjoy painting and modelling articles, but prefer them in WD, or on forums like this one. Hopefully their inclusion is not a trend going forward!

I'm sure there is a whole spectrum of people with different opinions on the different sections of a given army book.  I've been loving the novels, so I kind of feel like there's a better place for fiction, so I guess that's similar to how you feel there's a better place for painting articles.

Going forward I kind of hope they keep a little bit of everything because I think they should have a broad appeal even if I'd rather read a novel than a short story.

I totally get wanting more of what you love and less of what you don't though.  So I can see where you are coming from.

It seems strange to me they have deathrattle on the front of the box and revenant legions on the back.

It's just a fictional description.  For example the new overlords unit box says something like "bold privateers of the open skies" where this box says "revenant legions"
