Hmmm. That looks ... kinda cool. 😎 thanks for posting this. With the mask mod they really connect to the Spirit o the Mtn style.  Are the heads ball jointed like the Riders?

Sadly, no. The Alarith Stone Guard heads are flat at the bottom.

The heads are really infuriating. Flats on the gard, balls on the Dawnriders, and then there are the Sentinels and Warden, which are just weird...

So, I love Avalenor but wasn’t the biggest fan of his pose so, using parts of the generic poses for the arms, and the more serene mask of the generic ones, I reposed him somewhat to look a little cooler to me. Really happy with how he turned out. :D

Wow! What a fantastic model! The different pose really adds to the model (makes it look less "flat"). Thank you for posting. Now I cant wait to get the hands on this kit myself!

What are we thinking will be up for Pre Order next weekend?

Honestly, I dont know. It could be Sons of Behemat as they could fit in the one kit and book before 40K starts back up in october. But it could also be a filler week. Maybe the multiplayer expansion for Underworlds?

  4. Finally, this week is much more interesting to me. Im definitely getting at least one Mountain Spirit and Stone Mage. From the pictures im expecting the Stoneguard to be 5 per set, which would greatly annoy me.

Speaking of the stone-y guys. Did anyone try out the rune of petrification yet? I I only played it once so far. Its a bit expensive points wise but I kinda like it. Since it triggers twice, players are often trying to maneuver around it. So it could be really useful to deny an area.

Thirdly, Fourth, etc:  How different will this new Battle Tome be from the one in the Preview Kit.... will I need to get it?

It will very likely be the exact same content. Just with a different cover.

RE: Release, for me, it all depends on how expensive the stuff is going to get. I dont really need anything of the stuff next week (waiting for the Alarith units), but im tempted to get Teclis.

Is £70 a good price for the limited edition set new? I’m on the edge of either getting it or the idoneth deepkin start collecting

70 is a steal for the complete set. Im not good with translating currencies, but the set costs 145€ new on the webstore.

If you are interested in starting the army, the box set is a good way to get into the army. Both Wardens and Dawnriders are vital parts of almost every Lumineth list and Eltharion is a beautiful miniature.

New DOK models for Warcry previewed today.

New DOK models for Underworlds released today.

New Hero model and a boxset with Slaanesh ... and a book with rules (but not a Battletome) coming in November!

It's a good day to be a follower of Morathi!

What a great day! Im in love with the Ironscale! My force leans very heavily on Scathborn anyways, so this is perfect for me! It always felt kinda awkward to have the Bloodwrack Medusa on her shrine stay back, while the Blood Sisters are at the front having fun. Now a hero that can lead my army from the front!

Im really interested in her abilities. The description reads like she can generate lots of mortal wounds (maybe a improved death touch?). Making Blood Sisters battleline is basically a given I think, but maybe she can do the same for Blood Stalkers (finally a reason to take them)?

  8. Exciting times ahead! As a Daughters of Khaine and Lumineth player Im very happy with today.

The Direchasm Teaser was pretty good for us Lumineth. At first I thought the sword guy maybe a reimagining of the Loremasters of old, but this card:

makes me think its much more likely that this is a Aelementari of the River temple. Which I dont mind, this could mean we get a look at all the other temples much sooner than I expected!

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but I wanted to check how the Iliatha abilities worked. Unity of purpose says "after a friendly Iliatha Vanari unit uses a command ability...", and I just wanted to check what Iliatha Vanari units could use command abilities? As far as I know, we don't have Vanari heroes. What am I missing? Can all of the vanari units use command abilities?

Its when a Command Ability is used ON a Vanari unit. For example, when you use the generic re-roll 1s to hit ability you pick a unit within 12/18" to use it on.

What do you think? What's the reasoning behind obviously splitting a new faction in half but trying to push it through as a fully functioning range?

Oh yeah, im pretty sure at least the Wind temple was fully designed when they wrote this book. I think we will get more kits sooner rather than later.

This wouldn't be anything too unusual for GW. I dont know if you follow 40K, but they did the same thing with the Adeptus Mechanicus back in 7th edition. They first released the Skitarii as a fully functional faction, and later the Cult Mechanicus codex with more models.

Or, more recently, the Primaris. GW has stated that all the Primaris units we got so far were all ready when the launched the 8th edition. They have just spread out the releases.

You are kidding? How does the skyvessel get there then? Is beamed up? Someone on board taps a pair of ruby slippers together? No wait - they use magic... 😂

And how does the ship move when it cant fly? Scrapping over the ground?
Obviously, the game requires a certain kind of abstraction. Point is, your argument that the ship cant use the fly high ability is not based on any rules.

    The FAQ states:

Q: If an ability or spell stops another unit from being able to fly, does this stop that unit from being able to move at all? A: No, it simply means that the Flying rules do not apply to  it.

The Fly High ability states this is a 'fly' ability and so is governed by the Flying rules. As a Kharadron player too, yep this kinda sucks.

Im sorry, but the Flying high ability doesnt state at any point that its related to "flying" as defined in the core rules. A unit that can fly can move over terrain and other units. An ability deactivating "fly" results in the affected unit not being able to move over terrain or units.

A skyvessel that flies high doesnt move over anything. It gets removed from the table and set up 9" from any enemy unit. Any mention of fly in the text is strictly for flavor.

So anyone try out the army in a game yet?

I played a few 1000 points games before the new 40K edition stole all my free time.

One observation I made, while I love Ymetrica and the Alarith units, I dont think they are viable in smaller games. To really work well, Stoneguard units need both Stonemages and Mountain Spirits/Avalenor. But to compensate, a list including Alarith units also needs some range, so either Sentinels or Dawnriders are a must-have.

After that I tried a Vanari heavy Zaitrec list + Eltharion, and that fared much better. As Sentinels and Dawnriders allowed me to threaten objectives much more effectivly.

  14. Yes, that definitely helped! Interesting take! In my mind, the Damhari are the furthest removed from the aelf base/the closest to Kurnoth. With the Ruhaigi as a link between the two worlds.

But yours works as well. You are right, the Ruhaigi look the most like Orion of the old world (and therefore Kurnoth?).

Your unit warscrolls look good. They do what you have in mind. Only things I would do is some polishing. For example, the special weapons of the unit champions dont have to be seperate weapons. For example, the spirit formed weapons of the Tracker champion could solved by adding "improve the to-wound stat of this units Gallowgast by one". Similarly for the other unit.

I like the idea of Noamhar. A dangerous elite unit that also kinda acts like an anchor for the rest of the force via their heal powers.

Also something I was thinking about. I think it would be fitting to bump up the Ruhaigis move stat by one? Having a base 7" would be an interesting feature of this army and would set them apart from the slower Aelf part of the army.

  15. Looks interesting so far!

Maybe you can add your thoughts behind your design choices for future posts? I think it would help seeing what you tried to do.

Adding to that, what general theme, or game play are you aiming for? For example, Kharadron Overlords are quick, and focus on ranged fire power, while Ossiarch Bonereapers are slow and tend to focus on close combat, Lumineth are rather defensive and focus on magic, etc...

Maybe a unique mechanic like Aethergold, or the Ogors hungry mechanic. Maybe they could focus on the hunt part. A good way to bring that theme to the table could be buffs when targeting heroes? Or maybe let your own heroes mark an enemy unit as "prey"?

Another thing that almost all new armies share is a centerpiece. A book 300-400+ points model. Do you planned the aspects of Kurnoth for that spot?

  16. In preparation of the new GHB, I kitbashed a melee Lumineth hero. I was thinking about something like "Vanari Myrmidion". He is suppossed to be a Warden that has climbed the Teclian ladder, so more a champion like hero.

Obviously the specific rules depend on how it works in the GHB, but I want him to be a stronger version of the Warden unit leader.

Edit: hold up...how do they have points in the GH when their book isnt even out? That has never happened before...smells fake now

Its very likely that they were suppossed to be out by now. Books are printed months in advance.

So this leads me to the following frustrations:

    • Stoneguard are the only warscroll that is good enough at what it does to form a viable core to the army, but they aren't battleline and they aren't good enough all around (like Mortek Guard or Hearthguard Berserkers) to actually carry the army.
    • Wardens are probably the worst non-hero/monster warscroll, but also the only battleline option outside Ymetrica.
    • Sentinels and Dawnriders both seem necessary, but neither can really form the core of the army as they are also niche. They (especially Sentinels) also really want to be in Zaitrec.
    • The army has no screening unit. Wardens can't really screen in Shining Company (and are too expensive for the role anyway), and Stoneguard who could screen are bad at it because they are 2W per base instead of 1.

In the end I can't figure out how to build a legal list that will actually do what I want it to do reliably.

If I go Ymetrica, my Sentinels become much less reliable. If I go Zaitrec I don't have enough points to keep my drops to a reasonable level, get the support units that I need and get enough Stoneguard to form a core.

I don't really see how any build of Lumineth beats Deepkin, Tzeentch, or a ranged heavy Cities or Seraphon build. If you go too heavy on sentinels, then I think you can add Orruk Warclans to that list.

So yeah, I feel pretty stuck.

First of all, thank you for putting all your thoughts in writing. I have similar feelings towards this book, so its good to see them written down.

I definitely share this feeling of frustration. I just played a test game with a Alarith heavy Ymetrica list. While the Ymetrica mountain stance is nice, the lack of MW protection, and the short treat range hurts.

I agree Dawnriders and Sentinels feel necessary. While the Geomantic blast looks nice with its 30" range and D6 Damage, if I have learned one thing from playing Kharadron Overlords than it is that you cant rely on a single shot weapon.
On the other hand, I think the Stone Guard needs both Mountain Spirits and Stone Mages to really get going.

Yeah, choosing a character's gear was standard for almost all of WHFB's lifespan and had absolutely nothing to do with herohammer, the roots of which lie in completely different design choices. Seriously, they're orthogonal topics. Deciding if your empire general/high elf prince/vampire/whatever swung a halberd or a great weapon was normal for 30+ years, it's the "your megaboss/primaris captain can only have X wargear" that's the outlier, or new normal if you like.

There's a discussion to be had about which is easier to balance and different design paradigms (customised mundane wargear + magic items vs. battalion-based artefacts and warlord traits) but the idea that simple customisation is broken is deeply uninformed and utterly wild to me. You're already customising your characters.

Chosing wargear from a pre-made list is very different to the custom hero system we are getting this time.

For example,  in the 8th edition High Elves army book, you could chose the mount of an Arch-Mage and add a magical item. Stats and special rules are fixed.
Even the more free-form heroes (which are more the exception than the norm), can switch their weapon only for pre-defined weapons like great weapon/lance.

While the generator looks much more free-flow, like you can upgrade stats (and maybe add special rules?)

Is there a change that LRL will get a battleforce this Christmas? Possible featuring the Alarith units?

Also gecktron your coats of arms look amazing and I hope you don't mind me using the zaitrec one

I think its likely that they get a Battleforce this year. Idoneth and Daughters of Khaine both get one when they were released two years ago (and from what we know, Lumineth were supposed to come out at a similar time).

    Sure, go ahead!

  21. @fenriswolf2003here now all 4 Teclian nations.

My thoughts behind the other 2 designs:

Zaitrec: the crescent moon represents, obviously, the moon spirits of Hysh, but since the world that was the moon has also been a symbol of magic.
I also added Celennars rune to represent her role as patron deity of Zeitrec.

Syar: The anvil and the star represents Syars status as a nation of smiths and craftsmen. While the Orle of chains represents their restraint after the tragedy of the spire fall.
