  1. It's like buying a case for your models instead of buying new models. The case gives benefits to the models within it, but it is not the models themselves. Separate costs, different choices.

For reference, buying a battalion gives you:
An extra artifact to give to any hero (not just the ones in the battalion)
An extra command point at the start of the game.
The ability to drop all units inside the battalion as a single drop when deploying (you can still deploy them separately as well)

You cannot have any unit be a part of two battalions at once.

Hope that clears it all up.

  2. Ok, back again, let's make this a routine!

My Cities is all over the place and I am honestly kind of stumped on where to go from here. I know WHAT I am doing,  just not what first... I do want to make sure I chip away at infantry, as I have...a lot of it, but will want to mix it up to keep from getting bored.

    SO! I am gonna do:

10 Freeguild Guard (sword and shield)
    3 Demigryph Knights
    1 Gyrocopter

    For a stretch goal:

    1 Warden King
    10 Shadow Warriors

We'll see how well I do!

  3. For the Demigryphs, they are on SLIGHTLY larger cavalry bases than the typical boars/knights/etc. But a rider for a Demigryph is just a guy, so no way will he somehow fit on two squigs.

Many people have converted Demigryph Knights out of old Empire/Brettonia knights by giving them a little Grayph Hound as a hunting hound. You can do a similar thing: get the right basesize for Demigryphs (the 75x42mm) and put a Boingrot Bounder on it, with an unmounted bouncing squig as his hunting hound. That should work!

As for the other grots, they share the same basesize as Freeguild, so that'll be fine, but I'd convert them up as much as you can to make them unique. You need to make this not look like a Gloomspite list and like a Cities list. You can start with actual rifles. You can also go all in with feathers and such to mimic Freeguild. You can put supplies and packs around them like they look more organized and ready, carrying cargo and ammunition and such.

You can take a lot of notes from the Grot Revolution projects that always pop up in 40k. Grots as Imperial Guard, with stolen human tanks, gear, and uniforms. Go all out, this project sounds awesome!

  4. Alright! Wow, feels wild, but I did it. I almost stumbled at the end trying to do a weird extreme edge highlight thing on the Purple Sun....pretty sure it would never be worth the effort. BUT, as I had hoped, it all kinda slid into place nice and easy. And with this group combined with the Forbidden Power stuff, my Generic Endless Spells are done (barring the Aethervoid, which doesn't have an Empowered form, so I kinda ignore it for Cities? Maybe one day...) ! At some point I will get the Stormcast and MAYBE the Sylvaneth ones, but that is for another time. For now, celebration and thinking on my next leg of the project!

  5. My personal vote is HOMEBREW, just to not step on any potential toes. I do get the appeal of bonding projects, but I rather like making this special and marking TGA's importance in the AoS community with their own spin....assuming we can keep the momentum going and get the community involved!

If it does start to slow because of momentum and stuff, then hopping in and working more with Neon for a boost could do great. I'm happy to work with either.

  6. As a burgeoning writer trying to spark a fire that last a good deal longer than a few days, I would love to try my hand at something like this. I love cooperative projects, especially when it comes to lore and such around my favorite past time. I can lend my eyes to edits and give some solid feedback as well, as needed.

The whole project sounds really promising. Eager to hear more!

  7. So, I loved the Giant kit back in Fantasy. It was a must have, and part of the reason I dabbled in both Orcs and Goblins and Ogre Kingdoms. I've been wanting to bust mine out for a while (he just got a shiny, new oval base) and now this is looking SUPER awesome. I would LOVE a big monster only army and this really feels like it fits the bill perfectly!

I want to get started and perhaps repair my giant. But it is probably too far out to even consider that. Not SO worried about rules, more about...schemes and ideas. Will definitely have one pal around with my Cities of Sigmar, but that doesn't narrow down Realm at all. lol

Anyone else pondering theme and story to their Sons of Behemat army? Any ideas you'd want to fiddle with or conversions you might want to try?

  8. Ok, I had been meaning to throw my hat into the ring for months and I think I am going to finally just get it over with. Was hoping to get more painting under all this quarantine, but haven't had the drive. Maybe this will help!

    I pledge:
    Soulscream Bridge
    The Horrorghast
    Shards of Valagharr
    Lauchon the Soulseeker

If I can get a move on, my stretch goals will be the remainder of my Endless spells:
    Purple Sun of Shyish
    Malevolent Maelstrom
    Soulsnare Shackles
    And some details/basing to:
    Geminids
    Ravenak's Gnashing Jaws
    The Suffocating Gravetide
    The Emerald Lifeswarm

Whew! This seems like a lot, but I have found Endless Spells to be rather easy and fun. This will give me a complete allotment for my Cities, barring Stormcast and Sylvaneth spells. Wish me luck!

  9. So, to start a bit of discussion, I would like to ask a question:

How do you all take non-Duardin Cities of Sigmar units and theme them/convert them into proper Duardin, just sans keywords?

So far, I have a Light Battlemage and plans for a Luminark of Hysh. I know, Dwarves and Magic don't mix from traditional point, but I like AoS for its boundary pushing. Call me a radical. Besides, light magic being about clean lines and geometry seems to fit perfectly into the Duardin ideal of structure and fortitude.

I had a thought for making a mechanical golem/war suit to count as a War Hydra or something, but not sure on that one...

Thoughts? Will post some pictures a bit later.

  10. Excellent thread. I love seeing things all dwarf related, past and present. Been a beloved race since my first fantasy days of DnD and Lord of the Rings. ❤️

My Cities of Sigmar is a massive project and while it does include heavy dwarves, it is all over the place in races and styles. Literally aiming for a rainbow of influences to replicate the old Colleges of Magic. So far Light and Metal are dwarf focused.

Realm of Light is all about order and structure, that's about as Dawi as it can get, perhaps even more so than the elves! lol It is why I love Age of Sigmar, so much potential to take traditional ideas and shape it into something unique.

So this is a weird question to ask; is Cities of Sigmar, “Cities” of Sigmar, or “Freeguild”, “Corsairs”, “Darkling Covens”, “Wanderers”,  “Disspossed” w/ friends of Sigmar. The Battletome has a lot of cross synergy on an army/city level (Hawkeyes and various other aura Command traits). But then we have cities often by nature once you get past command traits are clearly tailored to certain faction builds highlighted by there Battlelions.

Living City having a “if no move spell” coincides with a lot of the mechanics of Wanderers.  While some cities notably Grey Water Fastness, Hallowhart and Pheonician support mini less developed factions (Ironweld, Collegiaye Arcanum, and Pheonix Temple), save Pheonix Temple which is arguebly main faction, those factions are most assuredly “ally” Factions.

So here my question, is there enough in built cross synergy faction, across the main factions and the “ally” factions. Or is it that simply put Cities is honestly a book with “Main” Factions and their Friends?

    Should it be like that?

It has enough synergy to support a main faction, and certain cities push that way, but you don't have to have ONE faction of synergy with some allies. Having a "Darkling contingent" where you have 10 Dreadspears to sacrifice to a Sorceress and a block of Darkshards for ranged support. Maybe a quarter of your list and that could be it. Then another contingent of Duardin with a Warden King and Runlord backing up a massive block of Hammerers and Irondrakes.

But yes, you'd get more synergy by pushing one major faction and leaning in towards your city of choice, but it is all relative. Anvilguard is thematic to the Dark Elves and their mount trait stuff REQUIRES dragons, hydras, or a Kharybdis to even work, so not taking one gimps yourself. But outside of that one to get the free trait, you don't need it.

So, consider them more as guides. For optimal use it is easy to focus on a faction so as units and characters die you don't have a lone dude with nothing to buff or get buffed by. But variety is the spice of life and I think the best lists will really abuse the good deal of leeway Cities can have.

  12. For regiments of mercs in training, regular Freeguild Guard or Bleakswords might be better.

Flagellants have NO armor and flail wildly and dies in droves. A lot of these models look more like regular militia and might be too organized and such for Flagellants.

If ya make them disheveled and crazy enough, sure, but a mixed rag tag group works fine for Freeguild, IMO.

Would love to see pics! Maybe get a better understanding of what you are aiming for.

Don't know what all the Hallowheart uproar at the main event's about, but I managed to scoop second prize at Blood and Glory's Warhammer Achievements at the weekend using Greywater Fastness at the weekend, along with best general and no sports votes, so they must be overpowered.  😳😉

Congrats! That is awesome! Care to share your list? Even more important, got any army pics?

Well... ok but then that means you cant make a non Aqshy / Ghyrian  City... I mean looking at the book right now, every single city we have, is either Aqshy or Ghyrian.

And since there is no "make your own" we are stuck with either this or that, regardless of which city is actually picked, it will be one of these. That means that even if we wanted a city from Azyr, we CANT really have one.

....hmmm I think I am finally getting it. So basically we ARE stuck with the one or the other realm. And as such there is really no point in drafting your city from a different realm, simply because we cant, as we have to pick one of the 6 cities and they HAVE to be either Aqshy or Ghyrian.

So technically I have access to Aqshy and Ghyrian artifacts, in addition to the 3 predefined for the City that is from the one or the other. ...well I guess thats still more than some other armies have, though I thought for a moment we can have cities from any of the realms.

Jesus Christ..... I like this book. I really do, but this is some seriously confusing sh*t to me >< There was no darn reason for them to complicate it to such a degree. Just do the typical "Temple/Greatfray/Skyport/etc, thing, and it would have worked out just nicely.

....chance is I got it completely wrong again. But I guess I`ll just stick to what is in the book. Not gonna try different realms and stuff. Thanks a lot for explaining. I am not thick headed per say, but I have never come across this type of rule build up / mechanic that is so convoluted. Have hard time wrapping my head around it just from reading the explanation.

The lore of your city and miniatures has NO impact on the rules. Want to have a city from Azyr? Sure, go for it. Use one of the Cities and just go with it. Only the background fluff in the boom has anything to do with Realms. The Thermalrider Cloak from Aqshy can be a flying star cloak from Azyr, just play a bit of counts as and pretend.

If you want to imagine it, just take the artifacts of Aqshy and Ghyran from the Malign Sorcery book and paste them in Cities of Sigmar. Your city will then tell you which section to then choose from. You have 15 artifacts for each city this way.

Don't worry, you are overcomplicating it. The lore of your city is whatever you want, and any warscroll, artifact, or idea can get some form of representation in Cities of Sigmar.

  15. Yeah, this seems good. Was already iffy on digging around through a dozen places. At least now I can ignore the other Order stuff.

Might Dispossesed/Wanderers/etc go in? Cities has SOOO many options it is hard to categorize it all. Especially with stuff that can be used (KO, Sylvaneth) but has their own tome. I know there has been some Tempest Eye discussions in the KO thread. lol

"Good luck. We're all counting on you."

  16. Ok, after a bit of thought and listening to the review videos again, I think I found the first list I want to try out.

    image.png.baa3b431a9fcff036b548586017c52c9.png

Not sure yet on what spells go where, but there is a LOT of crazy potential with this list. Potentially +8 to cast with all my wizards, each being able to cast 2 spells a piece. It can be insane.

Now, I know the Longbeards are off, it is a fluffy choice and I love that they can grumble a spell off so I can recast it in a better place. If I went to a competitive area, they would, at least, be switched to guard to get 60 more points of Endless Spells.

It is...surprisingly simple. And only 4 drops (99% positive that the battalion is 3-6 wizards...). No idea how much firepower it will have and if it can really survive, but as far as skew lists go, this one feels pretty right. PEW PEW, MAGIC!

It says ethereal has no effect on attacks made by drakkfoot.

So I'd say they still don't get cover because that's not part of the attack

But you apply cover (and other bonuses) as you take an attack. Which is only time you ever care. So, resolving all attacks, close combat and ranged, you will then check modifiers. Since a Drakkfoot attack is being resolved, ignore Ethereal, so Rend and Cover now kick in.

Either way, I am excited for this book. Cities will have my heart and time for a while, but I started Warhammer with Orks, so they will always have my heart. Money and time willing, there will be a Great Waaagh! in my future!

Lifted my head for the first time after the High Elf culling and dusted my Frosty & Flaming birds!

I got all new and vintage elven mages (Teclis, Alarielle, Loremaster and all the archmages) and will wait the book to paint then on the Battlemages colors.  Also got a really cool Sorceress i converted into Mistweaver that is gona rock with my birds.

Started assembling Shadow Warriors and managed to convert 4 out of 10 into ladies. My city gives out equal oportunities on the "getting killed' departament.

Sitting on a pile of High Elves heads, shields and weapons to swap and convert a lot, head full of ideas!

Good to feel happy about AoS again!

Not gonna lie, warms my heart to hear you excited for AoS. I know the culling hit ya hard. Hope you can keep up the motivation and find joy in the book. Can't wait to see some pictures!

    Hello all,

I’ve got a DC army which I had themed to play much like the Old World dark elves, with witch elves, assassins, drakespawn knights, etc dropped in as allies. Now we are seeing a lot of these tied together in the previews for the imminent Cities of Sigmar battletome. So, what do people think of the potential for a CoS ‘Darkling Covens/Dark Elves’ army? I know you’d lose the DC-specific faction abilities and artefacts from GHB19 to be replaced with who-knows-what, but it does appear to let a lot more units be in your army without being classed as allies. Could be interesting, I hope? What do other folk on here think?

Feels like a no brainer somewhere. There is apparently a buff chart for the Dark elf Dragons and Hydras. Anvilguard will be a great theme city. And being able to take in all but Daughters in your army without even touching allies feels worth it! Whatever Allies the Cities have will probably include Daughters (my guess is All Order for Allies). There should be spell lores for your Sorceresses and your endless spells will be buffed.

Also, there was talk about the sub-factions keeping at least some of their synergies if not a bit of their allegiance included as well. Cities is a sheer upgrade for Darkling Covens, especially given that they avoided all of the purge.

I don’t mind negating the ward save, on Nighthaunt is on a 6, sure on DoK is much worse as they can stack wards, but whatever is random chance.

But ethereal means that I can’t improve my save rolls but still pay the rend. Is basically saying to a KO player if you shoot me you are going to blow up. Nighthaunt are one wound and defence 4. If you add rend and remove the ward you cut them in pieces like a hot knife on fresh butter...

Just to reiterate I know is really circumstantial and I never played agains Bonesplitterz before, but don’t understand why they introduced this rule that seems to penalise incredibly the only army was never at the top of the meta...

I doubt it was DESIGNED as a nerf of counter. More they had an idea of Bonesplittas that through their crazy belief ignores magic and supernatural protection. They figured Nighthaunt fit the bill. Doubt it was malicious.

Also, this is a subfaction and requires pure Bonesplittas, which means giving up The Big Waaagh! Points and such, which look amazing.

Do you think we will ever get an answer as to why the freeguild are obsessed with some dude named Karl Franz or will the book include a section on how to file down name plates?

With a bit of fleshed out lore on the "Church of Sigmar", they could add old world heroes as Saints of sorts. With the gods coming from the Old World, wouldn't be too crazy to imagine that they mention people from it. And ya know how people react to words from a God...

Also, more fleshing out on religion helps to explain the Flagellant models. I am sure they will have a page at least on them to explain how religion works.

I am excited to the potential the lore can being, both official and player made.

Kind of sad Battle Wizards appear to have been removed. I wonder why. When I first checked the stuff going away, they were not on it .

Almost certainly going to be reboxed. They were in a special "Allies" box, so a reboxing is in order. They've been on quite a few of the displays too and the old Bright Wizard art was the preview for the Cities book on Sunday.
