    Well you can start with a black primer and then use white a bit more than a zenithal highlight on them. That way you get the darkest color in the deepest recesses and vibrant colors everywhere else. White ink works best for this, but white paint is fine if you only have cans available to you.

    Three ranks as you measure from the attackers base to the enemies base. As you said, two bases are about 64 mm and you have 12 mm wiggle room which is plenty.
