Hey there, and congratulations on making one of the hardest choices in AOS, which army to start with (as so many are amazing)

    1) when I start a new army (and as I did when I started IDK a few years ago) I like to plan out 1000, 1500 and 2000 point lists as a goal to collect towards. Don't worry overly much about competitiveness. People will tell you that only eels are competitive, but I've had great success in my local campaigns and tournaments using pretty much every warscroll in the book. My advice when coming up with a "list" to build/collect towards is what models inspire you, which ones you think would be most fun to model and paint. From there an army should start to form and the next choices become even easier.

    2) This depends heavily on which models you want to play with, as different enclaves do better with different units, Ionrach is great for caster heavy armies, Morphan for Namartii. However, My personal favorite is Nautillar, its a very defensive enclave and it pairs well with IDK tides of death, and defensive, IShlean Guard Eels. I like it, because compared to many enclaves which are only useful in some niche situations, getting a flat reroll to hits when a unit gets charged is huge, and really is an easy to remember force multiplier.

AOS isn't as restrictive as 40k in needing armies painted to match subfactions, paint the miniatures how you like, and they can fit in any enclave.

    3) IDK are one of the next books expected to be updated, as they are one of the oldest left currently. (Its Maggotkin of Nurgle, Legions of Nagash, Daughters of Khain and IDK in that order). Considering that Daughters are getting a huge update this fall with the new broken realms book, new warbands and a new hero mini, it seems likely that an IDK update is due within the next year.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for a bunch of new models, but a new hero, an Underworlds warband and endless spells seem very likely considering GWs release trend.

Thank you so so much!! This is perfect and well in-depth. I mainly want to go IDK as I love the models and I am experienced at painting so it’s been an army I’ve been itching to paint. In terms of which units I’ll get I’m not sure, I’ve ordered the battleforce and start collecting so that’s:

    6 x Eels

    2 x Sharks

    2 x Thralls

    1 x Reavers

    1 x Tidecaster

    1 x Soulrender

The models that interest me most are the creatures. I will end up getting one of everything I think but I love the leviadon.

Im glad to hear they are on the list to be updated as I was confused why they didn’t have endless spells, their hero might be the crab claw from the rumour engine.

    thank you so much!!

The barnacles make it seem more Idoneth. Who knows it could be some kind of Oceanic Carnifex for 40K!!

Maybe IDK warband, I feel like they aren’t likely to release any new idk units this soon as much as I’d love that

  3. Hi there,

so I’m looking to get the Idoneth Deepkin start collecting, however I have a few questions.

    1) where do I go from there? I only have lots of experience in painting and haven’t actually played before, that’s the main reason for idoneth but I would like to play.

    2) What enclave do I choose? Do I have to paint it to match the enclave?

    3) When are they likely to get new models/battletome, I understand they don’t have endless spells, although they are fairly new.

    kind regards,

    Salabean

  4. Hi all,

so I’m taking the plunge into Idoneth primarily due to loving the theme and models. Starting out with the start collecting as it’s just a base to build from.

What enclave is recommended? I’m stuck with what to paint them as :/

Sounds like you should go with the Idoneth - l think their vibe is also closer to the shadow aelves that you are waiting for. If you prefer their aesthetics, otherwise you’ll always doubt your choice.

On the other hand if you decide to go with the Lumineth - for a totally new player the set is great for €70.

I think so too. I’ll start with start collecting and build from there what’s cool. Really like the eels though.

Both Idoneth and Lumineth would definitely be a challenge for a new player - as @Athrawes pointed out, IDK require some real tactical play to make the best of their abilities, and Lumineth are new so it's hard to quantify their strength, but they do have a lot of moving parts. I would actually say that tactically, though, I might disagree with the assessment that Idoneth would necessarily be easier to learn; IDK's alpha strikes are incredibly powerful, but the army as a whole is extremely fragile and one poorly deployed unit can basically guarantee a loss before the game even starts. Lumineth, for all of their intricacies, at least have durable blocks of Wardens that can withstand a charge, so mistakes shouldn't be quite as punishing.

On the hobby side, they're both gorgeous model ranges that are going to be challenging even for experienced painters, so in that aspect I'd say it's a wash.

I feel compelled to point out, though, that Idoneth can be used as allies in Lumineth armies (but not vice versa, sadly). So if you start with Lumineth but want to dip your toe into painting/playing with some IDK models, you've got that option. I honestly think there might be an argument for allying in an ambushing Soulscryer + Morsarr Guard  unit into a Lumineth list in some situations, even though it increases your drops.

Hmm It’s annoying as aesthetically IDK look the best to me, I was tossing up which I prefer but I think with the lumineth they have some models I don’t like as much as all the cool sea creatures etc.

I have two reasonable 40k armies that I have been painting up, I love the painting side so I’m not too worried about that I’d say I’m decent enough at it. I think I just don’t want to get an army that isn’t going to be worth playing as a beginner. I what other armies are suggested for those new to the game?

Which do you prefer the models/lore for?

None of the armies that began fresh with AoS (and some of the old model spin-offs like Disciples of Khaine) are really swimming in unit diversity right now unfortunately but will, presumably, receive more stuff as the years go on.

I’m really not sure, I’ve been waiting for these shadow elves to come out but no news. I like lumineth but I think I’m leaning towards idometh. I’m not sure if either are good for beginners though

Shadow Aelves had a good chance of releasing in 2020 and 2019 and 2021 - so basically its impossible to say when they might come at this stage. I've my eye on them too, but sometimes its good to have an army to play "today" rather than wait forever.

Have a look at the other aelves and see what you like the look of. If I wanted Luminoth I'd get the boxed set without any pause. You get core troops; core rules and core tokens etc... its basically everything you'll likely get any way with a bit of discount.

Thank you, I will have a look around, I really appreciate it.

Luminoth haven't had their release yet. They got a discount bundle which has a hero, spearmen and cavalry along with the battletome, counters, cards and dice. However Corona reared its head soon after and their general retail release never happened; its happening in September (the luminoth discount box goes off sale this coming Saturday so chances are good that they'll get an announcement next Sunday for the following Saturday pre-order slot).

After that there's a smaller release of the Giant faction (far as we know so far its 1 battletome and 1 new multi-version model kit - which is ok for them as each giant is about 4-500points.

Then we know that there's a new Slaanesh and Daughters of Khaine duel army pack and expansion lore book. Therafter we don't know - I would say Shadow Aelves have a good chance of appearing in 2021, but who knows what might happen esp with Corona causing issues.

    You’re a hero!

Hmm how good is the discount box? Not sure whether to pick it up as I do like some of the lumineth, that or deepkin...

Shadow elves would be amazing, would they not wait even further though with lumineth just being revealed? Not sure if it would be elf overload 😂

    Dark Elves are non-existent now.

Instead they have been fragmented into several forces:

    1) Daughters of Khaine - currently released, getting some new models and the first of the lore expansion books focuses on Morathi, the faction leader. Major faction safe to invest into.

    2) Some subfaction groups of the Cities of Sigmar - a home for the sea based dark elf units, the hydra and some of the remaining land forces and the black dragon. Whilst they are not true subfactions (they will include other elf and dwarf and human units) they are at least a safe army that gathers up remains into new blocks

    3) Malarion's "Shadow Aelf" who are said to be etherial, shadowy and have hints of demonic/draconic designs to some units. Unknown at present, we don't have any models and we don't have any idea when they will appear (one could also say if they appear, but they've been a solid feature in the lore since day 1 of AoS so it would be a major surprise for GW to remove them).

Thank you!! I think I was thinking of the Shadow Elves they sound really cool and I hope they are announced soon but who knows!!

Is everything out for luminary now?

  11. Hi all,

I’m a returning player and picked up soul wars as I love the Nighthaunt army. I am aware of information online of how to expand this army however I was wondering what the best way is keeping in mind the whole of Death.

    My questions are:

Can I expand my army with other faction of death, I like Ossiarch Bonereapers for example can I expand my army with them?

Is it a good idea to mix death factions?

What’s the best way to expand Nighthaunt baring these first two questions in mind?

    Thank you all.

  12. Hi all!!

firstly thanks for such a welcoming community I’ve been looking round and it’s already so helpful. I’ve just picked up the soul wars kit to paint up while in lockdown so I can play it with my SO. I’ve been trying a few techniques from games workshop and other places and I have a few questions:

    - Can I just dry brush layer paints?  My hand isn’t great at making the edges look good with lines and I’ve found dry brushing has worked great so far.

    - Is the Army Painter Mega Brush set good? I’ve painted before and I’ve found citadel brushes to fray after a couple units.

thanks for any help I look forward to joining this great community.

  13. Hi all,

Im late subscribing but I am going through Hatchet. I’m just curious whether I should expect to wait 28 days for my first two issues? I’m hoping they come this week if I’m lucky I’m excited about this subscription as my SO and I are collecting SCE and Nighthaunt respectively. I’m just cautious due to the bad press but fingers crossed it will all work out the live chat on the website said it will be come soon but who knows.
