    You don’t declare shooting?

    I actually didn’t know that.

so you basically role  to see how much damage you do and then decide on which unit that goes to?

how would that work with the current look out sir rule

With Pre-Measuring done away with since 8th Fantasy, Declares are not in the game.  Meaning you say that X unit is gonna charge or X unit is going to shoot- and you can pre measure beforehand what you will need to charge , or what is In range to shoot ( for free). In the past you had to Declare before anything what is going into what. You could not pre measure. If you declared something was going to charge into something , and then after measuring you see it’s not In range, you fail the charge. You can’t decide to not charge or go to a different unit - hence you are punished for the tactical choice/ risk you are taking.

Similar with shooting if I remember correctly - you declare which unit to shoot and then measure. If it is out of range - you lose your shots. I found that whole system incredibly exhilarating and very rewarding. This is far better and more “grown up” than just pre measuring everything and just forming your guys into doing hyper - combos and rolling tons of dice.  But hey - that’s just me.

  2. You know , reading all of this - does anyone else miss Declarations? Declare Charges, Shooting etc... Those were my favorite mechanics along with no Pre-Measuring (something 8th Ed Fantasy killed). Am I alone in this ? The hype of properly assessing or guesstimating distance being rewarded/punished.... Anyone? ...

I still say that every single one of the four underworlds vampires can reasonably be called a 'vampire lord', and there's no reason to expect them to represent brand new units instead.  Vampire lords have options for wings already, and simple arms & armor variations in underworlds models haven't in the past suggested future new AoS units in their own right.

True - but Aos usually just keeps the models together and gives them a warscroll. They will be the “elite” unique vampire-on-foot warriors you can use in your SBG army.  I don’t see more of that type coming out but as a one thing sure.

Related to the guard vs. skellies debate, I fully expect NH to be pulled out of Soulblight Gravelords. Maybe allies but I can't see NH being included in a manner comparable to how they're used in LoN.

I personally think we'll have 4 very distinct Death factions after this (OBR, FEC, NH, and SBG) with very little overlap beyond allies.

Agreed - with the exception that FEC may in fact merge into SBG. I always thought that faction should’ve been just a “Legion of Hunger” or something like that in the LON Tome. Just too few kits to feel like its own thing. They can keep the fluff and all and just be a smaller part of a large faction easily. After all, these were all once under Vampire Counts anyway - which is a force I enjoy most. Multiple different undead creatures fighting under a Death Lord or Vampire.

I'm quite aware, and quite jealous, of the mortal realms business.  Here in the us I can get chainrasps on the secondary market for ~ us$30 plus $5 shipping, or shipped from the uk for ~us$15 plus $20 shipping.  The extra shipping completely eats the effect of Mortal Realms on the price of the models, so I mostly only get to be jealous of UK players who get to collect the army at anything close to a reasonable price.  And that's not even getting into the ridiculousness of trying to collect an army for players living in some other places, particularly Australia.

The base price point on chainrasps really is just beyond the pale for the kind of unit they are.  Since then we've seen some improvement - again, mortek guard are quite reasonably priced for how elite they are - but then we saw some egregious backsliding.  The basic lumineth infantry are, if anything, /less/ elite then mortek guard, and they cost fully twice as much per model.  I was never inclined to branch out from undead armies, but if I had wanted to collect lumineth then the price of their basic infantry would have prevented me from doing so just as the chainrasp price prevented me from playing nighthaunt.

Honestly, the chainrasp price point might even be optimistic.  GW could price these units at us$50 or even us$60 for 10, while still writing the faction rules such that you need to 80 or more for a functional standard sized army.  In that case, I'll personally still be ok.  I can begrudgingly continue to use my existing  zombies, and I still actually like my current skeletons (with tomb kings shields from back when those were cheap as chips for that proper 'undead legions' feel).  But I really hope GW is more reasonable about the new vamp counts infantry pricing than they have been with the lumineth, because otherwise this will be an extremely discouraging army for new players to buy in to.  If skeleton warriors and zombies end up costing more per model then mortek guard, then collecting the army from scratch becomes very cost prohibitive.

Games workshop doesn’t care - they will do it and guess what? People will reluctantly buy ...

They look nice, but I'm not sure I'm going to replace my existing zombies.  10 come in this box, so we could easily be looking at the full release being a box of 10, while a full unit of zombies is currently and might remain 60.  New models generally get a price increase over old models, 10 old skeletons is us$30 right now, so maybe us$35, maybe even us$40.  Chainrasps are us$40 for 10 after all.

If you need 60 zombies, and zombies are 10 for us$40, then even if you already have 10 from Cursed City you'll still need to spend a full us$200 to get that 10 up to a full unit.  $200 for a chaff tar pit.  For models that look good individually but will be murder to paint 60 of.

Again, don't get me wrong, I kind of like these models, and I hope GW is more reasonable about price this time around.  The price point on chainrasps is utterly unreasonable for a weak hoardy chaff unit (though at least the models are smaller and have less detail so they're quicker and easier to paint), so much so that I simply could not afford to buy as many chainrasps as I would need for a nighthaunt army and thus never collected nighthaunts in the first place.  The first and to date only GW undead army I never collected.  And since then we've seen some better prices.  Mortek Guard in particular are us$60 for a box of 20.  That makes them 25% less per model than chainrasps!  and that's for larger more detailed models and a much more elite unit that you need far fewer of per unit and per army.

Going forward I really hope basic battleline infantry starts coming in boxes of 20 in general, though honestly even at the same price as mortek guard I'd have a hard time justifying replacing my zombies.  Not unless the zombies are also made a bit stronger, with a smaller max unit size.

    We'll see, I guess.

20 zombies for 38$ on store. I’m sure you can find cheaper

So we can see a fair expansion to soulblight coming and it looks like the natural successor to legions. I also can't see the flesh rater courts being rolled into this one but they are really due an expansion!

With the new mounted Wight King being a soulblight character it looks a safe bet that deathrattle will be included.

But if too much is included from LoN then what space does that leave ? Will they discontinue a load of lines?

Anyone thought of a likely roster?

    New units???

    Old units??

    Factions??

I think Cursed City models will have warscrolls in Soulblight Gravelords. Much of what was shown today might be a replacement for existing kits ( skeletons/zombies/bat swarms). I do expect a further reveal of that vampire lord we saw last month and potentially new blood knights - as I’m sure GW knows it’s one of the highest requested resculpts.
So the rest will have most of the previous legions come back ( probably without Nighthaunt units) and get refreshed keywords and warscrolls. Just like Tzeentch a few years back with classic stuff merging together with Silver Tower.

  8. Zombies feel a bit overdone - could’ve just had half of them be with tombstones- and others just shambling about. Skeletons look great- but again the poses like “haaay” Instagram . Some of the Kossak look doesn’t merge with other stuff  but there’s a lot here to enjoy .   Probably won’t be till late March or even April until we get the revelation of Soulblight Gravelords. Probably June release which will go right into Aos 3.0

  9.     Nice looking previews- as usual amazing models. But as someone who already has an LON collection and wants very little of the new stuff - I was really hoping for a Battletome Soulblight Gravelords announcement to just have a birds-eye-view idea of the army.
I think they will still merge a lot of old and new together in the tome and there are lots of rumors of FEC joining in. But I still want that confirmation !

  10. I don’t see Nagash not making this battletome. Even Arkhan and Morghasts have a good chance of making it as they are still very distinct from Reapers.  Whatever comes I at least expect a makeshift “Legion of Sacrament” towards the back - even if it is just an add-on.

  11. I’m a LON only dedicated player. I would hold off on buying some things as we’re about to transition to Soulblight Gravelords most likely.  Hold off on the Battletome too since there are going to be huge changes this year for our collection. I would assemble and start to paint the boxes you just bought as they are great values and can go together quite well!! Always go for the look of cool- not the competitive list. After you get many models you like - you can often build lists from the boxes you own

    My Wishlist for Soulblight
-keep the Legion Of Blood/Night as ‘sub factions’ with a general ‘Soulblight’ allegiance also. Each Legion would focus on specific units (Night would be Mannfred and all the ‘horror’ elements like ghouls and wolves, Blood would be Neferata and skeletons etc) [im not too familiar with the exact lore of the Legions but that seems to be roughly what they’re about]
-plastic Blood Knights, Blood Knights on foot (elite vampire infantry), plastic Fell Bats and Bat Swarms (both with much better rules)
-Vlad as a new Mortach (with an additional Legion Of ... sub faction

I don’t really have an opinion on rules for them so much, I just want new plastic models

I think the Elite Infantry unit will be the Vampire Warband from underworlds. I mean - it’s 4 badass vampires that are unique and should have a much stronger warscroll than average.

  13. Ever since that teaser last month I really want them to show more. I don’t believe we’ll get anything February but perhaps a new preview of official release next month? I expect cursed city has to come out sometime late March and Vampire warband around April so possibly that time we can get a full reveal .

I picked out the relevant part.  Sepulchral guard didn't imply new units because skeleton warriors are already a unit.  Some alternate weapons for the sake of variety didn't and doesn't suggest that 'skeletons with scythes', for instance, were or are going to be a new unit.  The ghoul warband might imply fell bats as a future unit for FEC (though that still hasn't happened yet), but not really anything else, because crypt ghouls are already a thing.  Again, some alternate equipment for variety doesn't look like it means anything.  The nighthaunt warband might imply a new hero type (or more likely a replacement for the existing banshee), but nothing else, because chainrasps are already a thing.

Vampire lord is already a unit, including options with and without wings.  The fact that this one has a big mace and that one has two swords doesn't to me imply new separate heroes, let alone entire units, any more than it did for skeleton warriors or crypt ghouls or chainrasps.  Not that I wouldn't like to see it, I just don't see it yet.

Agreed. I’ll go even further and suggest we already have about 6 centerpiece warscrolls across 3 kits.  Very unlikely for them to add another...,but I’ve been wrong before ...

That isn't borne out by the data, though. The reason there was T1 advantage in 40k in 9th was because GW screwed up the missions; 2020 ITC had a T1 win rate of like 52%, i.e. nothing. Prior to them ****** up the missions, the conventional wisdom was that you generally wanted to go 2nd to control the scoring if you were a better player.

AOS is far less balanced by who takes what turn than 40k right now. A ranged-focused army that gets the T1-T2 double turn has an overwhelming - we're talking about 75% or more - chance to win the game in AOS right now, magnitudes greater than even the 58% going first win rate that pre-FAQ 9th had.

Now if AOS had 40k-style terrain rules and you could hide from shooting, this would change. But the combination of ranged attacks you cannot hide from and the double turn is literally game-determining. There is no tactical depth to getting low-dropped and then double-turned by ranged armies right now, because there's no real way to mitigate it.

I would go even further that it’s been this way since day one. Ranged has always been an issue with combination of double turn. They eventually remedied some of it by giving armies abilities and artefacts to reduce shooting etc. - but nothing in the core rules. This needs to stop being abilityhammer and start being warhammer. Less fancy abilities / add-ons and more core rules where choice matters on a universal scale .
