  1. Gotta say, I'm amazed at the new possibilities of this book. It seems really thematic and fun. I kind of feel bad for flipping out when the combo box came out. Oh well, I learned my lesson.

That being said, I am surprised about Awlrach. He seems to be a small model, standing at 175pts. They kind of talked about him as a centerpiece in the preview, if I remember correctly. Was expecting a 10+ wounds hero perhaps. What do you guys think? Is the movement shenanigans seem mandatory to you?

Welp, after a few games it's starting to look like big packs of ard boyz aren't for me. 10 is probably enough to soak a charge from a reasonably punchy unit but a proper powerhouse will atomize 15 as easily as 10 or 5. They definitely don't hit like aos2 ardboyz, which is fine. I appreciate the more clearly defined roles between them and brutes... I don't know. The list feels like it needs some more combat punch from somewhere. The gnashtoof can't do all the heavy lifting.

Not really ready to give up on them yet, but I'll certainly be following the advice to move those reinforcement slots over to consolidating the Boltboyz. Maybe try to upgrade the gnashtoof to a sludgeraker. I'd miss that slippery mobility though.

Yeah, definitely. It feels like you don't have any hammer in there. I'd try to group up some units like the GGs in 6 or get a unit of 10 Brutes (like I did in my lists) and def group the Boltboyz together... to try to make them feel like threats. At some point, even though you gathered a lot of WPs (with the MSUs), no one significant can use the strong melee buffs. Like you said, ardboys don't hit hard at all anymore.

That being said, that my personal feeling. I haven't tried my lists yet.

Hum i'm dubious. Warmaster on Kragnos and Gordrack isn't the same wording...

    Gorddrak read:

WARMASTER: If this unit is included in an Orruk Warclans army, it is treated as a general even if it is not the model picked to be the army’s general.

Unless it's changed in the official FAQ later I don't think tournament are gonna allow that.

In the article he shows a positive response from GW regarding the question. Would that matter?

Also, when I read that statement you quoted, it works in my head :D I dunno if it's just because I'm not too used to the wording of these rules but it looks legit. What is the part that wouldn't make him work in Kruleboyz?

Can anyone help me please - Can the Blue Scribes' Scrolls of Sorcery but used to cast an Endless spell?

I would tend to say yes. I don't see why it wouldn't. It seems to meet all the criteria. The ability only mentions casting a spell.

Think we will see anything new beyond arena of shades and awlrach?

We saw the ferry-man centerpiece that is looking amazing. So that's a new thing that'll come out for sure! Hopefully along the book.

I think what they were saying was more along the lines of "No unit sizes have changed with this box. The last time unit sizes changed (at the edition change) they went up, not down."

That's exactly what *I* said to the response of Neck, that units seemed to be shrinking.

@Lupercal this argument is kinda pointless if you ask me. I'm just gonna drop it. It doesn't matter :)

Bladegheists have been units of 10 for the entirety of AoS3.

Yes yes, that's what I'm saying. It recently changed with the new edition. In 2.0, they were in units of 5s and were worth 95pts for 5. You had to reinforce them to put them at 10.

  8. 12 minutes ago, Neck-Romantic said:

Well the core of my army was 2 torments, 2 units of 6 Hosts, and 2 huge units of Bladegesists so the change hits me square in the face 😂.

Also; myrmourns went from 6 base to 4 base didnt they? So yes, unit sizes shrinking. And since you have limited number of reinforcements, smaller unit sizes overall so more prone to being wholly wiped out b4 healing can take place

Myrmourn have always been sold in units of 4s. That's how they're boxed too. To my knowledge, the unit sizes aren't shrinking. If anything, they are growing. Bladegheists used to be in units of 5s before and are now in 10s. 2 units of 8 Banshees covering the entire army suddenly feels like a compelling idea.

Also have to agree that without an artefact or battalion bonus that allows him additional or boosted judgement rolls, the Scriptor is DOA

The hero bloat is real; and Ide much rather have a KoSES or Krulghast, tho the Torment has slipped down in useability badly

I was actually thinking that, wouldn't it be pretty good to have many Torments to cover your entire army and always heal models?

"Every one of these warscrolls took a serious hit, even those bumped up in other ways, and everything staying the same points feels like a sick, Nagash-level joke at this point."

That goonhammer summary of the rules preview pretty much nails it. Time to learn to live with the fact that we got bin guy again... And this time, he seems to revel in kicking armies that are already down.

Hahaha oh man, 'bin guy'. I hadn't heard of that one. I presume it's the same talented individual who did the Bonesplitterz "update" to 3.0, proceeded to clean all the warscrolls, didn't add a single thing and called it a day. Transforming the army into a boring army with no personality (or strength) whatsoever.

  11. I just had a thought that kinda scares me. GW has a tendency to make units that aren't selling well stronger and kind of cycle through them like that everytime they update books. Maybe Bladegheists are just normal fodder now but Harridans and Glavewraith will have real strong warscrolls, like Rend -2, 2 damage each, battleline and can be massed. That would make me real sad because I don't own nor like any of those models :(

  12. 17 minutes ago, That Guy said:

I ordered it too. Being slightly worried and disappointed so far doesn't mean I don't love the models, I did own a few banshee, but I didn't have a lot of bladegheist. The box will be a nice build. I can still see a use for all of these units, especially how deep our toolbox has already been so far. When Idoneth got their update, some people were similarly worried about some of their builds. The tomes made sub-factions interesting and opened up a plethora of toolbox options to build the armies of the Idoneth. The overall battle trait enhanced the play experience and magic, lore and even artifacts directly boosted these traits or added upon it. While I was overall pretty negative and salty about the initial info of the Arena of Shades box, I still believe Nighthaunt can definitely become competitive through the book update. It will be an exciting time and nerve wrecking one for sure. We currently aren't very frontloaded, so the pressure on the book being good is a lot bigger. Let us al pray to the great necromancer himself, for we shall need his guidance in these daring times till the book drops. That book has to make our backpack feel like it's loaded with stones.

Yeah I'm also getting the box. My pre-order was already done. I'll end up with 16 banshees total. I guess I can do 2x8? And 30 Bladegheist. Really curious if I'll be able to play all of those. Hell, maybe chainrasps will come in units of 20s now, huh?

I'm also very confused. The two options are:

Either these warscrolls show the general direction of where the new codex will go. That feels scary because it just means more boring warscrolls that aren't even stronger.

Or those are all designed with the current codex in mind. The sprue on the Scriptor says 2021 and it's easy to imagine how all that could've been released up to a year ago. Which is also scary as it shows a complete lack of insight of why Nighthaunt are so weak and that they didn't even think about points going down

Oh yeah!  I forgot about the points man! Bladegheist took a huge hit, they lost whatever good thing they had (the reroll) but gained... Nothing. They're still the same exact average boring profile they were, that all the army has. And are still 190pts for 10 :D

    It's mindboggling.

  14. 1 minute ago, The_Dudemeister said:

The Scriptor Mortis does have a (pretty bad) version of that in its profile.

"Once per phase, you can allocate one wound or mortal wound that would be allocated to this unit to a friendly Nighthaunt Summonable unit within 6" of this unit instead"

So only 1 wound once per phase.

But more importantly... do NOT do that on Crossboos. They only have a single wound and cost 19 points per piece. Do it on  Chainrasps who cost literally half as much and don't meaningfully degrade the whole unit. Or on Spirit Hosts who have 3 wounds that can potentially be healed back up.

Crossboos will be among the worst bodyguards even if we get a very wide-ranging bodyguard rule

My confusion is ...why are they holding out SO MUCH on the warscrolls? Why does every ability feel like a weaker version than anything else we see on other scrolls (or Order scrolls). I mean this is a bottom tier army in the current meta. What do we have that's so strong that could influence such toned down, weak abilities on warscrolls we saw. Hell, we even have some more 5+ saves now instead of 4+. I just don't get it. Everything we saw so far is boring and a nerf.. except Banshees who are now good but extremely situational. I'm just ranting off here, I apologize. These reveals really brought me down. The crossboos is probably the worst profile in the entire game.

I'm going with "Myrmourn Banshees as Battleline" as my preferred allegiance bonus, please. They're just straight-up awesome now - Spell Eaters seems enormously overpowered and will probably get a rewrite at some point (though even if it was once per unit per turn and you couldn't roll multiple times against the same spell it would still be really strong), but they also seriously improved their attack profile.

It's a good thing I already have 12 painted that I couldn't field in 3.0. hopefully if they make them battleline, I might!

Perhaps these warscrolls were developed solely for arena of shades... the first tome changed some stuff up from the first battlebox too 😬

Even if they were.. I mean they don't even compete with the DoK content of this box :D

So like... The previews are out.. Wow! Those NH scrolls man... WOW! I mean.. I don't even..

I'm trying to think what REALLY strong allegiance abilities they will come up with that could counter balance all of those nerfs and sideways changes...

The most recent example was the Thousand Son Infernal Master. The Hexfire box came out around August 2021 but the model just came out this month . So You are looking at about a 7-8 month delay.

My logic, is that the Scriptor and Crossboos purchased separately will be within ~$5 of the entire NH half of the Arena box. I also have no need of the extra models, but free models are free models. (The DOK side can be easily flipped on ebay for cost).

    That's good to know, thanks.

  18. So when do we think we'll see the standalone models of the crossbow men and the new hero for sale? Do you guys have an idea?

I'm debating if I'll buy the new box or not, especially if the book comes out later... I already have 20 Bladeheist Revs, 2 Spirit Torments, 2 Chainghasts and 12 Banshees. I don't see the models that are included in the box as useful to me.

Do you guys have any idea at all when the standalone kits could come out?

  19. If the book is even remotely "good", I really wonder how it'll affect the meta. Strong armies right now all have high rend and powerful attacks. One of our main issue right now is that we don't have the means to delete stuff strategically. All our damage tables are 1damg, rend -1. If we have some additional strong tools, I feel like it could really disrupt armies like Stormcast for example (aside from dragons who vomit MWs).

  20. Some really good points from the last two posts, thank you guys. It's true that it wouldn't make sense at all to have a profile like that in 3.0. There's probably something much larger army-wide (or sub faction wide) that justifies those stats. Really can't wait for this book.

  21. After trying to design a list with both a MK and Gobsprakk in, I always thought I lacked bodies in them. I have 2 lists here that I think are really cool and honestly have a lot of tools. In both of them I have a big threat range (MK, or 6 GGs, Killbow, Bolboyz) I have several threats (at least 4 per list), I have MW, I have some good screens (ardboys), countercharge (brutes) and am over 130wounds.

This first one has the MK. It's more melee centric and counter charge with ranged threat. I dropped Gobsprakk here. I'd be curious to know what loadout would you give on the MK. One of the warchanters would have an Arcane Tome for sure for Hand of Gork.

You had me until the last part. I think everyone is missing this point. There is another way to put it, and that's to remember that's there's more. We just don't know what, yet.

Do the same thing with those Cities crossbowmen again. Let's say that scroll got revealed and all it showed was the attack profile and let's say, I don't know, Piper--their +1 to run and charge ability.

You'd look at that and laugh, right? A ranged unit? With no rend? And an ability to get a +1 to running and charging? Oh, what is GW thinking?

And then the book comes out. Oh, battleline. Oh, marksman. Oh, stand-and-shoot. Oh, the free general's CA giving them +1/+1! And then the Celestial Hurricanum! Suddenly, it all looks different.

Dunno, guys, I would rather just go through my days with a hopeful smile than a dour frown, wouldn't you?

Good points, here. I hope you're right and we'll all be amazed.

  23. 26 minutes ago, EnixLHQ said:

Sure. Except no one's doing that. How could you? You know 1/3 of one warscroll, half of another, and 0% of the new battletome.

What exactly is the "how things are" here?

I guess he means that he's calling what he sees and commenting on it. I mean from a hype building stand point, the marketing dpt would want to try to hype things up showing cool warscrolls. Or at least cool abilities that warrant some kinda buzz. The fact that from all the things this unit has, they decided to show their completely underwhelming shooting profile, is what's bothering me. Again, the comparison to Idoneth comes to mind. They showed interesting stuff on those sharks to build hype.

We're not saying the book is gonna suck. All were saying is that their shooting profile is just plain bad. There's no other way to put it. Whether on a vacuum or not. And it's disappointing. All it is just deception, here.
