  1. It would be a MASSIVE improvement if Prince Vhordrai's CA could be used either on himself OR a SBGL unit OR a unit with the "Vampire" keyword. I would happily settle of any of the 3. Perhaps if the rumors about 3.0 are correct, that we will be generating more Command Points then this might see more use, but I rather use my scarce Command Points elsewhere (most of the time).

What's supposed to be the best target for Prince Vhordrai's CA in a Kastellai list?

That's 2.000 flat. The Vengorian Lord is there to have a target for Vhordrai. I mean, I could use it on the Coven Throne and get it some buffs to have it be stronger, but with the battle profile, I think it's kinda wasted. Or remove the Vengorian Lord, ignore Vhordrai's CA and only use CP on the Coven Throne's?

In my opinion Prince Vhordrai's Command Ability is not something you build around (unless you run a VLoZD with him), rather it is an added bonus. So I rarely consider the Command Ability when building lists with the Prince. For the June tournament I'm attending I will be running Kastelai with Prince Vhordrai and the Coven Throne with the Dolorous Guard Battalion. However, I don't expect this to be a viable list in a month or two from now. It is going to be scary with the punching power of Prince Vhordrai and the wound shrugging from the Battalion.

ignoring the broken CA, what are you people's considerations on the wight kings?
I feel like they are pretty meh

The only thing I've considered the Wight Kings for was the Wight King on Steed to be a fast (fairly cheap) Hero to support Blood Knights. It really hurts not having a Vamp Lord on steed. If GW didn't want a Vamp Lord on steed then it would have been nice if the unit champion for Blood Knights could act similar to the Hekatos in OBR, issuing basic command abilities and Deathless Minions.

In regards to the Reikenor + COGs, I like it. I've considered something similar in Kastelai. I am also thinking of a list for Vyrkos using Belladamma + COGs, having a unit of Blood Knights to charge in early (very doable on boards where you and the opponent at 18" away) but also have a unit of Grave Guard pop out of the graves to also charge in. In this build I was considering Drive by Deathstentch Command Trait so everything is re-rolling wholly within 9" of the Commander.

I really don’t like the Vengorian Lord Model, so decided to make a conversion/ proxy, he’s not done yet. So wip..

what do you think? I will make better picture when he’s done.

I like it! I too am not a huge fan of the Vengorian Lord model, I'm still debating what I want to do there. Maybe make a huge creature of some sort or go the route of a more "normal" looking Vampire.

i find REALLY weird that the VLoZD does not have a CA. Do you reckon that we are going to get more generic CA in the new rules?

I hope so! I'm really bummed about the VLoZD. I have always preferred generic heroes to named heroes. But now, especially based on points Prince Vhordrai is just so much better. Similar points, but the Prince has the D6 Chalice, a better spell, and a Command Ability. Before the VLoZD's Command Ability was really good IMO and it is a shame GW removed it. If they just removed the Chalice heal but kept the Command Ability then I would definitely be using the VLoZD in more lists.

So much of this book is going to change in a couple months when 3.0 drops. It's a bit frustrating, but understandable, that SbG wasn't just a 3.0 book.

Agreed, which is why I'm not going to buy a ton of models or build a ton of lists until 3.0 comes out. Assuming it is out end of June / start of July I'll have one tournament before 3.0 so I'm just going to play a list using models I've got.

One large change that would be a positive for this army is if the rumor about Command Point generation is true. This army is so hungry for CPs that if we have a way to get more or generate more it will be a big plus. I suspect "generals" may contribute to more CPs, seeing how we are seeing more of the "this model counts as the army general in addition to the model you pick" or Vyrkos having access to a lot of generals.

Could y'all ask your LGS/members if they'd allow these types of characters? Or are they rather strict?

You seem to be able to use the rules in matched play, as AoA, but with permission

Cannot speak for others. I'm down here in Houston, TX. We have this thing called "The Texas Masters" where the "Big Cities" (Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio) have local 1 day tournaments (3 games) throughout the year and then each city hosts a Major Tournament (2 day, 5 games) and you're ranked state wide. end of the year, Top 20 in the state get "invited" to play in the Masters which happens in January. Everything is based 100% of matched play.

Now that isn't to say there aren't several of us that will get together to play an informal game here and there and I'm sure several would be OK using these rules. However, for me personally I usually try and do 1 tournament a month for my "warhammer time" and thus it is Matched Play.

A shame that it is only a narrative add on and not for matched play... narrative things don’t interest anyone of our play group..

I'm kind of in the same boat. Aside from one huge narrative event this summer (where we can use Anvil characters), all of my area is heavy Tournament (matched play) events.

I imagine all of it in the book might have been a bit too much to balance, but definitely some of it.

Oh for sure. The Anvil rules can be abused / are sometimes better than what can actually be used. However some of it sounds like it could be implemented. Honestly I feel like VAMPIRE units should have something similar to LRL that when you select one VAMPIRE unit to fight you can immediately select another VAMPIRE unit to fight. Or make that part of a bloodline. But there is definitely some cool thematic elements that could have been brought over into the book.

I'll see :) Both working atm as well so might be a while.

If you're the acrane vamp you can select one spell of three, that's one of the options.

Another interesting one is that you increase(decrease) the armour save number by D3.

    E.g. 4+ save, roll D3, (roll a 4) AS is now a 6+

Third I'm not sure, related to beasts and wounding

All of this sounds so amazing and pisses me off that it wasn't in our book for matched play with the appropriate points allocated to the units.

I have a friend who has gotten his paws on the WD and gave me a bit of into. There doesn't seem to any forum rules limiting what can be said, as long as I don't share picture. Let me know what you'd be interested in knowing until you get access yourself.

    Some cool things he mentioned:

Can turn into a Fellbat/DireWolf once per game, if it dies, change bat/wolf model with your lord again.
There's a wicked combo you seem to be able to do that allows your hero + 2 other units fights first in the combat phase! :D

Some pretty awesome spells, 2+ ward save at the cost of a wound, lasts until next hero phase.

Standard AoA stuff, +1 save, wound, movement etc. Ethereal is not restricted to models that ahave a 4+ save, so no 2/3+ unrendable.

You can have a CA that summons a unit 3" away from an enemy, so cool.

    -----

If I missread the rules, please remove and let me know, but my understanding is no pictures.

For those that have other questions while you get your hands on your own copy, let me know and I'll ask my friend :)

Wow sounds like a dream that should be in the actual Gravelords book lol.... What is the spell lore? Is it that 2+ ward save you were saying?

Do you think Bridge is worth it when we have Gravesites?

33 minutes ago, Neil Arthur Hotep said:

I am not super into the Bridge in this faction. Mostly because we have like four ways to deepstrike already that don't rely on getting a spell off.

I agree with Neil, I'm not a fan of the Bridge since we have so many ways to deep strike and/or outflank. I am more thinking about using COGs. So you can outflank or Gravesite summon units and hopefully get the 7" charge. With Hero support to re-roll (with a CP or free charge re-rolls in Vyrkos with Command Trait) it should be a decent success rate. Charging in a blob of 20 (or 30) Grave Guard would murder things.

Ooft that's a bummer, I was keeping my hopes up today for it.

I think it'd be in GW's best interests to do a WC article on it really. They must've seen some of the feedback by now, I'm sure they use the internet, they can't be oblivious. "Vampire Lord feels boring/uninspired" is a sentiment which has been shared many times (not just by me haha). It would go a long way to reconciling with the detractors of the book if they came out and said "hey, here is an awesome customisation system coming up in the new White Dwarf, here's a preview of some of it!".

Plus, increasing awareness of the cool stuff in the WD would help them sell more copies.

Agreed. Shame it cannot be used in Matched Play. Although I do understand some Anvil characters can get super broken. However, the difference between normal Anvil and Anvil of Blood is that the normal Anvil is used across all armies. Since Anvil of Blood is specific of Gravelords ONLY, then GW could have tailored it for matched play in mind. This would solve the problem that Vampires on foot are really boring AND it would allow for custom Vampires. Maybe make it a points premium to allow this but still options.

Interesting, is there an official way to count wounds in AoS?

I’d read it as model has 4 wounds, takes 3, has 1 wound remaining.

i.e counting down, and not up (how many wounds have been taken)

Actually, you might be correct as I re-read the core rules. It says "Add up the damage that was inflicted. The player commanding the target unit must then allocate a number of wounds to the target unit equal to the damage that was inflicted." It is kind of a grey area I think (unless there is an FAQ out there, not sure). You can make the argument that you allocated 3 wounds to that model, but sine it currently has 4 then it stays up with 1 wound and at the end of the phase the wounds characteristic drops back to 3 but with the model having 1 wound allocated to it.

So, I just realized how janky Kritza is. When I skimmed his warscroll at first, I read it as "When Kritza dies, he comes back on a 4+." But it's actually "When Kritza dies, from this point foreward, you get a new Kritza every round on 4+." And if those new Kritzas die, you get more chances in the following turns.

What is going on with this book? The jank is really off the charts this time.

    Likely to be FAQd/Errata.

Funny, yet somewhat retroactively depressing thought occurs.  The next White Dwarf Magazine is supposed to have updated Anvil of Death rules for Soulblight in it.  Everybody remember to come back here and post your "better than in our battletome" Vampire Lords once the Anvil of Death is available.

Yeah I'm a little excited for it. Our big competitive tournament group is doing a large scale narrative battle in July where each person gets like 3-4k points and it is going to be a massive (multiple tables/games at once) war. Anvil of Apotheosis characters ARE encouraged and "competitive" lists will be rejected. The point is for all of us competitive people to bring our fluffy BS lists, lol. Right now the plan is all Grand Alliances vs. Chaos.

Guys If I use Rousing Commander, till the end of that batttlephase lets say a unit of BKS get +1 wound, so they are at 4 wounds. And now let’s say one of them is reduced to 1 life now.

phase ends, what happens? Does he die?( I know Hunger can trigger and heal him)

Pretty sure he dies. Because he has a wounds characteristic of 4 and has taken 3 wounds.  Then after the "buff" wears off he has a wounds characteristic of 3 and has taken 3 wounds, thus one dead Blood Knight.

Ah don't...don't get my hopes up.

I would LOVE a second release wave at this point. I wouldn't even mind paying for the book twice. Especially if they give Vampire Lords more options.

Did the LRL book mention the missing units in the lore? That could be a sign

I would put the chance of us getting ANYTHING new within the next 1-2 years at less than 5%.

The Problem is that neither Mannfred or Prince V can take an artifact or command/battle trait. I have the same Problem and can’t solve it either. VLoZD is so much worse than Prince V, so this isn’t a conclusion either. Vengorian Lord is just bad.

Agreed. If the VLoZD still had its D6 Chalice then I'd consider that over Prince Vhordrai in several other lists. But the lack of the Chalice, a Command Ability, and decent spell REAAAAALLY make it hard to justify over Prince V. I wish they still had a winged vampire or vampire on steed. I'd like a quick cheap-ish Vampire Hero that isn't a NAMED Hero. Problem is with all these named Heroes I don't have many options to slot artefacts/command traits onto without them being expensive. Right now the Wight King is absolute garbage, otherwise the Wight King on steed would be an option.

Dolorous Guard is very clearly on life support.  I've you're trying to prep an army for the long or even mid term there's no point.  Even if they don't ban book tomes, the emerald host subfaction is pretty clearly intended to replace the emerald host battalions.

Oh yeah 100%, I definitely do not recommend the Battalion is you don't have 10 Hexwraiths laying around.

  18. 1 hour ago, Neil Arthur Hotep said:

This talk about allying in Nighthaunt reminds, though:

At the moment, we can still ally in that Nighthaunt Hexwraith battalion (Emerald Host?) which provides a bodyguard ability to the general.

It's not like our generals are fragile (mostly 3+ saves and a bunch of wounds) or really all that important anymore, but it does serve a crucial function in the army: Allowing you to proxy your Black Knights as a unit with a decent warscroll.

Yes, I am going to run Dolorous Guard battalion in a Kastelai Dynasty army at a Tournament in June. Prince Vhordrai's warscroll says he is treated as a general in addition to the model that is chosen the be the army general. Based on the wording of the Dolorous Guard, you shrug wounds and mortal wounds from your "general" to them on a 2+, provided they're within 3". This means you can have 1 unit of Hexwraths bodyguard Prince Vhordrai and the other unit bodyguard your other general. It is going to be a dirty little list and likely only viable for the next 1-2 months, but might as well play it while ya can.

Guys, I haven't read every Page of this thread so pls forgive me if it is written already, but Is there already any information about nagash? Would really like to know if he got improved since his point costs are even higher now

Same exact warscroll, nothing changed except his points. So GW is either trying to price Nagash out of competitive play or there is some sort of change in 3.0 that will justify his cost. Possibly to Arcane Bolt and Mystic Shield among other things.

Question about the Vengorian lord. His CA says that a SBG unit can heal D6 wound if it killed an ennemy unit...does it mean we can revive a model or two ? Possibly a Blood Knight ? Or am I reading too much into it ?

If not then it means it's only useful on Behemoths...

It does not say return models, just heal. So best used in parallel with lots of high wound things.
