I just wish for a few new models with decent warscrolls that might fall under the favoured retainer label, and perhaps some decent battalions (the fact that we can't use Castellans of the Crimson Keep in LoB is so unfair!). Plus, LoB = Blood Knights, let's face it, and I believe that our faith, to be quantified in the endless hours most of us dedicated to convert these models from basically everything under th (Purple) sun, will have to be rewarded at some point.

Based on this thread, an argument can be made that Castellans of the Crimson Keep CAN in fact be used in LoB.

It is a real grey area because LoN Battletome uses some old (AOS 1.0) terminology and references. However, even if we can use Castellans of the Crimson Keep, it doesn't change the fact that LON needs some serious updates in Battalion choices. With Orb of Enchantment being REALLY good for shutting down big things like Keepers of Secrets it's hard to justify taking a one time use artifact over the Ethereal Amulet. Subsaquently, to get a second artifact slot, it requires very expensive battalion(s) in LoB. I absolutely love LoB with the lore etc. However in a competitive environment I've been looking at other options and the new Slaves to Darkness really has my interest.

  2. First off, I realize that Seraphon, KO & Tzeentch need and will likely get an updated battletome next year. However in 2019 we have seen 12 Battletomes (Gitz, FEC, Skaven, Khorne, Fyreslayers, Slaanesh, Sylvaneth, Cities, Orruks, Bonereapers, Mawtribes and Slaves to Darkness), so I assume GW will not stop at 3 Battletomes next year. LoN & Nurgle are kind of AoS 1.5, seeing how some units still have old terminology (lack of "wholly" for some buffs and Nurgle exploding 6's and not unmodified 6's). It would seem likely that an update for those two factions and maybe a few others isn't too unlikely. Would be nice to see LoN get mount traits, updated Battalions, etc.

However, having said all of that, I have also read some posts that think GW may try and phase out LoN, since LoN is more of a soup / grand alliance faction and every other Death faction is fairly specific: FEC, Nighthaunt, Bonereapers, etc. Is it possible they may spin off a specific Battletome for say Soulblight and Deathrattle? What is everyone else's thoughts?

The problem comes with that there are numerous confusing rules out there.  The core rules simply state you may take a battalion if your army list includes all of the units required.  Personally that's the easiest way of doing it, no need to have keywords on battalions or any complications.  If you've a wight king, some skeletons and black knights then you can take Death March - regardless of if you're running as allegiance Soulblight, Legion of Grief or whatever.  Now perhaps some battalions may need a "may only be taken if allegiance is XYZ" or "may not be taken if condition ABC", but I think that's a lot easier to manage than what we've got currently.

I agree, this seems to make sense as well. I'm hopeful that with the December FAQ around the corner it will hopefully address some of these issues..

  4. I would suggest using Chainrasps over Skeletons in LoB. Generally what I like doing is using 1 unit of five Dire Wolves that can act as a screen or a fast objective grabber and then two units of either ten or twenty chainrasp, depending on what my overall list is looking like. Also, I use either two units of five Blood Knights or one unit of ten. A unit of ten Blood Knights, in LoB with the VLoZD's command ability to reroll all misses will rip most things apart when they're on the charge. The thing you have to remember is that Blood Knights are hurt pretty bad when hit with attacks that have rend and also Blood Knights really need the charge, as a result you need to make sure you have a really good screen, especially now where a lot of units from other factions have speed boosts or increased charging range.

I am not good at the hobby part (and I am not that good at playing either) but everything that makes you use diferent then original models for bloodknights is a good idea.  Easiest way used to be dragonblades but theyare not sold anymore. Other idea is to w8 till slaves to darkness are relesed (probably in less then a month) and use the new knights. Thar would require more work but is possible and those models are awsome. That beeing said your idea is also good. It will require you to cover hands and feet with greenstuff (some knights have their whole hands uncovered) so it depends how comfident are you in your skill. I think that hands will be much more dificult then feet. I never worked with greenstuff so maybe it is easier then I thought. Good luck and if you manage to do that share pics :D

If you have any flesh eater courts friends that have extra Vampire Lords or can buy them I highly suggest using Chaos Knights + Vampire Lords for Blood Knights, that's what I did.

plus Katakros was teased in Forbidden power as the secret entity and they left his identity on a cliffhanger so it had to been a death release coming really soon.

granted I am not sure if there going to be an AoS Christmas release this year since S2D are releasing so close in December but quite possible their something big on the horizon still.

Was there a big "Christmas" release last year? If so, when/what was it?

  6. I'd also like to know if a "Mount Trait" is considered an ability that can be suppressed with Orb of Enchantment. Specifically Mawtribes "Metal Cruncher" that does D6 mortal wounds every combat phase (not battle round).

I'm pretty sure they mean that those battalions can be played in any faction in that Battletome. The same Battletome also includes information on factions, so even tho it's a mess of rules and keywords it checks out.

That's how I read it before I came on this forum and saw the posts. I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that since Death March and Castellans of the Crimson Keep are labeled as "Death" it was a catch all for the Death Legions and Soulblight within the LoN battletome. Even though the Soulblight units have that keyword they also all have the "Death" keyword, which is what lead to my assumption.

Well, with 2 dragons, 10 bloodnights and battleline tax there is not that much roomfor summonable options.

I tried similar core under soulblight with dragon, manfred, vhordrei, 10 bloodknights and 2x3 vargheists and it worked well

Dont know if blood is that great if youvdont use gravesites /resurection that much

That's where I'm at too. On one hand I agree that if you're not using the gravesites and you're getting hit with battleline tax, is it worth it. On the other hand, in LoB the Blood Knights and VLoZD are hitting harder and you can use the battleline tax as chaff / objective holders.

One thing I was thinking about for a "fun list" would be a Vampire Lord on Abyssal Terror to double the speed of a 10 man unit of Blood Knights. But I think that can only be used in a Grand Alliance Death army, right?

  9. The big dilemma I'm having is trying to balance a fluffy list that is still reasonably competitive. I made some really nice Blood Knight conversions, so I'm working on a list that has a VLoZD as a general with Aura of Dark Majesty, Prince Vhordrei, ten Blood Knights and then modify from there. I REALLY wish we had better Battalion options because Orb of Enchantment is so good but not so sure it's worth taking over Ethereal Amulet on the VLoZD..

Well... basically everything you stated is wrong.

Ok ok, it's not "wrong" per se' since we are all talking opinions here (just kidding a bit) but certainly I disagree with everything you have stated in the above post.  Here is my alternate take...

I've played GW games since 40k Rogue Trader, and in all those years, there has been a common denominator - their games tend to slog, and are very predictable.  By that, I mean most competent players can predict the outcome of, let's say a game of 40k (we'll pick on this one, since it uses a traditional turn sequence) by turn two at the latest - and frequently after deployment (or even army list creation).  I can do this pretty easily, and I admit I am not exactly 40k's version of Sun Tsu here.  Most competent players have this ability, if they are being honest with themselves.  Their games are just designed to be this way

The usual dynamic is that two players will start a game.  Player A starts to lose.  He then loses a bit more, and then continues to lose until finally...he loses.  Not much chance of stopping it.  The game state of 40k is very resistant to change.  It's not impossible, of course (dice exist, after all), but the rigid, linear nature of the game play is WILDLY resistant to losing players altering their fate.

Other games solve this problem in different ways.  Warmachine, for example, solves this issue with it's "caster kill" mechanic.  So that no matter how far behind a player gets, he's still in the game, since he always has the option of assassinating the enemy commander, and winning the game.  For Age of Sigmar, GW solved the problem with the Double Turn mechanic.  This gives losing players at least a shot at coming from behind and pulling out a win.

At the end of the day, if a winni g AoS player gets the double turn, he just wins that much faster and maybe both folks can get another game in.  If a losing player gets a double turn, it gives him a chance to pull things around and make a decent game of things.  It's an elegant mechanic, and works well for AoS.

Random turns are the single greatest rule that GW has added to this game, and quite frankly, they'd be fools to change it.

    Agreed with this 100%.

So since dragon princes are gone now (and because the lances on mine keep snapping) what alternatives (GW or 3rd party) have people been using for their blood knights (and vampire lords, I'm curious to see) and do people have any pictures they can share?

I presume chaos knights are now the go-to but I struggle imagining them as looking vampirey and not just chaosy.

I used Vampire Lords kit bashed with Chaos Knights

  12. If you're not running LoB's battalion, what are the thoughts on 2 VLoZD's vs. 1 VLoZD & Prince Vhordrai? My thoughts are, you could give the VLoZD his own command ability at the start of the Hero phase and then after that use Prince Vhordrai's command ability to allow the VLoZD to pile in and attack in the Hero phase, rerolling all misses. Either give him the Ethereal Amulet or Orb of Enchantment. I just wish we had access to better Battalions.

While it is extremely unlikely your buddy has any legit info, I'll bite. What are these supposed "big models" coming out?

He didn't give  specifics other than saying there's some new Destruction stuff in the works that would be receiving some large models. Again this was just an employee of one of the major brick and mortar stores in the UK who I met for the first time. I am personally taking it with a grain of salt and not holding my breath. But as a LoB player, a Soulblight book would make me super happy..

I actually have my own theory on this and is similar to what Tom from warhammer weekly discussed in their Old World review. In few years time AoS could be only about the new shiny armies and the old legacy armies relegated once again in the Old World. This would mean that many armies that have been updated today for AoS 2.0 are placeholders until a potential drop of support in AoS 3.0 and Old World release in 2/4 years.

If you think about it they are already doing it with Death by moving away from the old Vampire Counts with 2 brand new armies and one recycled from old parts. Another vampire army moving Neferata and Mannfred away and you basically can sunset everything else left out.

Apart from that I strongly doubt there are 3 known chambers to be opened for Stormcast and we will not see any before AoS 3.0...

All of this to say that some of the smaller and older armies may remain smaller and some of those kits may not be updated anytime soon. That’s just my opinion anyway

Makes sense actually. Last week I was on vacation in the UK and I was at one of their major store fronts and was chatting with one of the employees who asked what faction I played. I told him Legion of Blood and then I proceeded to talk about how I wished LoN would get updated and/or there would be more Vampire stuff. He told me that he has heard internally of a Soulblight related army coming out but not until 2021, which seems like a really long ways away but I don't know. He also mentioned some really big models coming out in the near future fr AoS. If there was a Soulblight related army coming out then I could very well see "Legions of Nagash" being phased out for specific Death factions and not the LoN "soup" as we know it.

This is answered in the FAQ

Q: Can the warscroll battalions for specific Legions be taken outside of the Legion named on their warscrolls?
A: The First Cohort can only be taken as part of the Grand Host of Nagash (because the other Legions cannot include Nagash). Any other battalions for specific Legions can be included as part of a different Legion as long as that Legion also includes the Mortarch that must lead it. For example, to include the Court of Nulahmia in a Legion of Sacrament army, the army would also have to include Arkhan the Black (because if the Legion of the Sacrament has any Mortarchs, one must be Arkhan).

Oh thanks I must have missed the second part of that. I recall the part about Grand Host of Nagash, maybe that's what I was thinking of.

  16. Am I understanding correctly that there are only two Warscroll Battalions that ANY Legion can use (Deathmarch & Castellans of the Crimson Keep) and that the other Warscroll Battalions can only be used with their associated Legion? Furthermore if that is the case and you're playing Soulblight, can Soulblight only use the Deathmarch or Castellans of the Crimson Keep Battalion?

  17. Technically any Vampire Lord can have chalice of blood. There isn't a flying horror model but it doesn't cost anything to make it a flying horror (or riding a nightmare steed). I kit bashed my  flying horror, using the wings from a Tyranid Gargoyle
