  1. The attendants are finished!

I'll seal it this weekend when I can bust out the airbrush, but this has been probably my longest and most committed project to date.

I’m ... extremely uninterested in painting the second cauldron lol. It will be silver instead of gold but I’ll probably put it off until I finish the 5 melusai and the stragglers of the blade coven. Even so, I feel like my overall mojo for Daughters is waning. I think its part of the natural ebb and flow of these projects - might be interesting to revisit my small tzeentch collection or something..

    • Finish 1 Sister of Slaughter who is 60% done already
    • Finish 1 the last attendant on my Cauldron, who is 50% done
    • Paint 1 Melusai

I can probably paint at least 1 more model, and it will either be Morgwaeth or another Melusai, depending on what feels more interesting at that point.

  2. @yukishiro1 while I think it would be amazing to have actual dialogue between consumers and producers I can't imagine how that works on a large scale like GW's. As we zoom out into faceless masses and a faceless corporation, we end up with irresponsible ****** talking on our side and dont-give-a-damn on theirs. Somehow this feels like a natural product of mass production though, created by the scale of peoples and forces at play.

This, you can only have 4 units bigger than the minimun size. It can help with variety for some armies, but you can just use multiple MSU of the remaining unit.

Interesting. I like the push towards diversification! I wonder if the generic battalions influence the ability to spam MSU - if the battalion restriction is - 3x battleline for instance, then you can’t just take another 5 blocks of battleline.

This could be quite limiting for factions with limited model choice.

You're not making life any easier for yourself with so much NMM but this looks lovely - wheels are really insane! Great job, hang in there, this is gonna be a center- and masterpiece.

Thanks! I feel like NMM isn’t necessarily what’s taking so long, it’s more that I keep doing other things instead of painting in my free time 🤣. Super procrastination has set in now that I have to paint all the trim on the Avatar..

  5. Got the staircase and 80% of the lower half of the model done. It's been pretty chill, loose colorful painting and getting lots of colors in.

I think the risk is having too much stuff going on with the metal, so I am planning to dial up brightness and saturation on spots on the avatar and the blood in the actual cauldron to draw the eye and create some structure. Looking forward to airbrushing some scarlet next week!

Murdering hordes of undead, demons and orks can make a place quite orderly. ;)

But I guess if you do it just for fun and power, then its not.

Living on an edge... gives you power to make decisions on which side you step.

Murder for fun and power isn't inherently anti-order. As long as it happens within a regulated system that is predictable and controlled, it is still order.

One way to think about it is Lawful evil in DnD. The axis of order-disorder has no relationship to good/evil protagonist/antagonist 😜

  7. It's been some weeks since my last update but and I've been casually chugging along.

The cauldron's bottom section is almost done! I've been doing alot of nmm but haven't been blending too much since alot of this will be partially hidden under the staircase

There's some teal light that I'm trying to show around the braziers, but I'm not sure that's really working..

Luckily i started the army by shadow and pain box set so most of my army are melusai.

Yeap, that helps, and there's always the option to go masks on all the models. That being said - I would argue that even with masks, painting skin to tabletop level is much harder than painting armor to a tabletop level.

This is compounded if one chooses light colored skin tones!

  9. I would imagine that painting faces (and painting eyes) on a minimum of 50 models puts people off. It's easy to paint non human faces (like orcs, or ghouls or skaven) because our minds are less sensitive to deviations in how those faces look. Human faces, on the other hand - especially human faces that we expect to be beautiful - our minds are very sensitive to deviation there. If your paint gets chalky, or you end up with shadows not quite right, or you have googly pupils - those are infinitely more noticeable on a Witch elf face than, say, a skaven face. Consequently I think it's easy to give up early on in the painting process or decide that the army is not for you - simply because it's much harder to be satisfied with a paint job.

Honestly I wish DoK was an elite army, with how much time it takes to paint them.

This is the reason I have 20 dudes with like 100ish magnets in 40k and then said never again I am waiting for new weapon upgrade rules (going from one edition to another GW has just updated [read buff] just some weapons and factions and other factions are stuck with old battletomes and old weapon loadouts that are less powerful) and my hobby project is stuck with 40 dudes sitting on my shelf just torsos/heads/legs without the limbs. Hate that.

100%. I just glue em on and say f*&$ it if its not optimal. I would prefer not having to worry about the weapon profiles unless it’s something general, like - spears for range, or lances for charge bonus. Too much choice beyond that creates analysis paralysis haha

  11. I see that the new skeletons and zombies are $60 for 20 models.

Witch elves would like to have a word with the GW pricing team. We have the exact same base size and are taken in similar unit sizes, are an older kit, but somehow cost double the real life monies.

I think the new Stormcast are not as different scale wise as people keep assuming. Picture from WarCom at a different angle.

Yes the armour is smoother aesthetically - but certainly not a dramatic difference in bulk to my eyes.

New SCE are not going to invalidate previous units - not even Primaris have done that!

I like this pose, but all i can see is heresy world eaters. He’s even got the butcher’s nails!

The terrain there looks cursed city-esque! It is odd that everything is mossy and wet on the base of a stormcast.

  14. Been working on the cauldron of blood - I had the foresight to keep parts only partially built, which is good... But damn now I wish I had kept even more of it separate. Damnit, getting the shapes painted on the underbits is tough.

I am quite enjoying the colors though. I had an idea to do alot of scarlet and gold, and it's coming along the way I hoped. Here's one wheel and the attached strut in progress
