Which is an entirely respectable opinion, but if you don't like house rules in the first place why did you click on a thread explicitly about them?

I mean it's a social forum in which people discuss things? I wasn't overly negative about your comp, I was just putting my thoughts about house rules on a social media forum on a discussion topic house rules. No need for the attitude buddy :D

  2. Why house ruling does often serve well for a small, close knit local community I am really not a fan of house ruling. If it works for you and your group there is no harm in it.

The problem I have is that house ruling is that it always comes with some bias, and often the "pack" writers will put some of that bias into the pack. It's not normally a "let's make the game better" it's a "we think these things are annoying" which ends to everyone wanting what they deem to be annoying to be somehow house ruled to please them.

I've always been of the view to just play the game how it's meant to be played, if I don't enjoy it as it should be played I'll find a game I do enjoy.

For now but you know it's coming. W+ REALLY pissed me off by killing the old AoS app, no way I'm going to reward that financially. You can play the game for free now, its baffling that they want to burn through good will this way. Why am I giving them any money if they don't respect the players?

Well I don't know if that's coming or not but I've not heard any plans for it, even from the man who runs it.

You don't have to give them your money, not subscribing & not shouting about it on the internet is also a option.

I was playing around with a Thunder Lizard army at 1500 points. Do you think a regular steg is worth it as a battleline? The idea of a Chief and 2 Stegs in an army seems appealing to me, with Skinks and Bastiladons for objectives and battle tactics, and skink starpriests for magic (plus a Scar vat on Carno because rule of cool).

What's the appeal of the engine of the gods without a Slaan? For healing?

Edit: And oh my it never occurred to me that terradons, ripperdactyls and salamanders had Jaw attacks and gain +1 attack from Coalesced.

Stegadons are pretty great battle line 100%.

Engine is just quite cheap for a hero + monster & provides good chip damage / healing. It's not worth it without a slann though & probably not worth it unless firing off twice with a slann.

Yeah Salamanders + Razordons pack extra melee punch in coalesced.

This is the conclusion we're sitting at as well, but seeing FB/warcom and other groups saying stuff like Nagash casting 8 arcane bolts and such had us head scratching.

If you take a look Nagash's warscroll it specifically states he cast multiple Arcane Bolts in one turn (This was FAQ'd to only allow to cast multiple Arcane Bolts, as opposed to multiple Arcane bolts & Mystic shields). Arkhan the black a similar where he can cast multiple Mystic Shields & Arcane bolts in the same turn, even it had already attempted to be cast by another wizard.

You can't try and cast the same spell more then once per phase, including if the spell fails to cast or is unbound. Anything that lets you attempt to cast a spell that has previously been attempted to have been cast in the same phase by another wizard will be a rule on a warscroll, allegiance ability, command ability etc.

  6. 19.1 CASTING SPELLS In your hero phase, you can attempt to cast spells with friendly Wizards. You cannot attempt to cast the same spell more than once in the same hero phase, even with a different Wizard. In order to attempt to cast a spell, pick a friendly Wizard, say which of the spells that they know will be attempted, and then make a casting roll by rolling 2D6. If the casting roll is equal to or greater than the casting value of the spell, the spell is successfully cast.

No where does it say Arcane Bolt / Mystic shield can be cast more then once.

In the hero phase both players have the chance to dispell 1 endless spell.

Dispelling endless spells is done at the start of the hero phase & the spell was removed after the start but in the same turn it was cast. It being placed in a way where it would move off the table is most likely correct.

Yes in a way. The main thing in 3.0 is being able to carry out your battle tactics and grand strategy. There are a few that are easy to accomplish to start the game but the tactics that win you games are being able to kill the general, battleline, and monster, along with the added bonus if you do some of these items with a monster.

Nagash fills out that roll very well, being able to delete units and get the added bonus for being a monster. He's not unkillable though so you have to be careful when running him.

The main strategy to protect him and increase his maneuverability is using Protection of Nagash to teleport him when he takes damage and out of combat.

Playing the objectives is required to stay in the fight but in most case won't win you games. Playing to the strategy and tactics is what wins games and Nagash does that better than everything else in our army until our book gets fixed.

Okay that's a good analysis. Does a lot of his damage come from storing multiple arcane bolts then letting 5-6 go for 5-6D3 Mortal wounds?

I don't think the board size is the main culprit. It's the objective placement, number, and the secondary objectives. GSes in particular. I have no doubt that if you removed GSes you would give a boost to less powerful armies, right now they're basically just a free 3 points for having a stronger and/or more skewed list. It's classic "the rich get richer" game design.

You could try playing AOS3 using AOS2 scoring, but you'd have to rework the whole system, and at that point, you may as well just come up with your own system instead I think, it'd probably be better than using AOS2's scoring in a ruleset it wasn't designed for.

I do think you're right that it's largely intentional. GW isn't so clueless about design that they didn't realize the general impact of what they were doing. They presumably think that players enjoy a big scrum in the middle of the board; if they don't, they really aren't very good at mission design, considering what they've come up with.

And that's not necessarily terrible. But it does place increased pressure on them to get the balance right, and right now, it's not even close.

How many games of AoS 3 have you played / how many were decided by a GS?

What rattles my bones most is the transition of free community/fan content, like the awesome warscroll builder, behind a pay wall. Same for the GW AoS App, with the „promise to deliver“…

same for the YT IP stunt.

and especially doing it BEFORE launching their own products. They don’t have their OWN cgi clips etc, they forced the freelancers into submission, called dips on their work or out of WH business.

So we will get the same as before, but not for free, but with „full hurray GDubs“ and everybody has to be a 5£ patreon 🙄

And while there are a bunch of not too hot batrep producers out there and most going for the „fun2play“ approach, who really believes that GW will have serious WaaC-Content? There are WD batreps, where rules are applied that never made it into the book…

I think they’re just doing it the wrong way around, trying to force success through bullying, instead of creating cool content that people want to support…

As far as I know Warscroll builder will stay browser based and not moved into Warhammer+?

I will be attending a event late September which is no named heroes. I'll be taking the above, a nice mix of everything.

I think the most comp way would be to play Slann/Engine/Stegs/bast/sallies in Thunder Lizard.

How are they ruling Rally? Assuming down to 1 brimstone from a unit of 10 pink's, is that 49 dice? Do further blues and brimstones dead increase the dice pool?

They are ruling rally the same as the other "return slain model" mechanics. So you can only Rally once you're below your starting unit size, in the instance if you have 1 brim and you rally, I've not questioned this but I believe you roll 49 dice and any 6s can return pinks.

What about the unit summoned by the Gaunt Summoner? (5pinks) Could you use a return mechanism to bring back some since the minimal unit size is usually 10?

Well the maximum unit size for that unit is 5, so the same applies.

  13. This is covered by the FAQ -

    • Some older command abilities specify that the effect of the command ability applies to multiple units within a certain distance of the unit that is issuing the command (for example, all friendly units with a specific keyword). When this is the case, the command is both issued and received by the same model, even though the effect of the command applies to the specified units within the specified range. The model that issued the command cannot issue or receive another command in that phase (because a model cannot issue more than 1 command in the same phase and a unit cannot receive more than 1 command in the same phase), but could do so in a future phase even if the effect of the command lasts for longer than the phase in which the command was issued. The other units that benefit from the effect of the command do not count as having received the command (and so are not prevented from receiving a different command in the same phase).

TL;DR - The model issuing the Waaagh! counts as issuing and recieving a command, the units that benefit from it do not count as receiving a command (so are eligible for All Out Attack, etc).

  14. I'm attending 5 weekenders 100+ players events in September - October. They have all ruled that you can't return models to a unit of Horrors (Icon, Fold Reality, Rally, Emerald Lifeswarm) until you are below the maximum starting unit size. So essentially no returning a pink until you're down to 9 brims if you start with a unit of 10 Pinks.

I can understand why and to be honest I can see a FAQ going this way as well. 215 points for 50 wounds is still amazing value.
