Wait wait - so the FAQ means we're finally getting to use the three S2D allegiances as a of our book at last?

How did you get three artifacts - shouldn't you only have two?

Does the whole unit of Varanguard make use of the artifacts?

Also that is a very very cool thematic list. Making use of the Untamed beasts for early game screening is something Rob has been harping on about for ages now.

    https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/c7769110.pdf

The Varanguard list is just a Damned Legion now, not its own army :O. There are two artefacts and one command ability in the list. No idea about the artefacts, it raises other questions. Do 3 Varanguard all become Spawn/Daemon Princes/summon 10 Daemons each?

Thanks, I love the idea of a hyper elite army that just does some facepunching.

Why complain so much, when you can a have 6 varanguard that can be the general of your army (so double aura buff), that can obliterate things, that can pile in multiple times 6 inches and stop enemy units to retreat? And if it's not enough for a merely CP they can remove enemy models from an objective on 3+.

Is this Fist of the Everchosen? I've got 9 Varanguard, but that list needs an FAQ damn fast :D I hope they actually let you have a Varanguard as a general and if you get to use Slaves to Darkness alleigance traits as well.

edit: FAQ went up, problem  solved!

    I was thinking of this:

    Knights of the Empty Throne:

3 Varanguard: General, Ensorcelled Weapons, Wall of Cursed Iron, MoS

3 Varanguard: Ensorcelled Weapons, Grasping Plate, MoS

3 Varanguard: Ensorcelled Weapons, Corrupted Nullstone, MoS

Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Manticore: MoS, Whispers of Chaos

5 Chaos Knights: MoS, Ensorcelled Weapons

5 Chaos Knights: MoS, Ensorcelled Weapons

    5 Marauder Horsemen: Javelins, MoS

    9 Untamed Beasts

    9 Untamed Beasts

    Pleasurebound Warband

=1910 points.  3 Drops, screen with the beasts, second screen of Javelin Marauder Horsemen. Bubble up for spell protection, run forwards as fast as possible, charge with the Marauder Horsemen, keep the Varanguard 4" away. Marauders die, everything piles in 6" apart from one unit of Varanguard that gets a 9" pile in.

I figure thats enough potential to go through screens and get to the sweet stuff inside. Also I own everything for this aside from the Untamed Beasts.

Many on here have suggested Cabalists might be our strongest build but its a tough nut to crack. I watched a battle report last night; Slaves (Ravagers) vs Gloomspite and saw the power of the Darkfire Daemonrift. Even if your opponent doesnt have wizards and/or isnt throwing endless spells, if you throw enough of your own endless spells out there along with a few of your own wizards then the Daemonrift can be ridiculous. With this in mind I had a stab at a Cabalist list using the Fatesworn Warband, giving me another spell with decent range and making the army 2 drops. I've got 5 endless spells in there and the sorcerer general has the trait to make the casting ritual succeed on 2+ (I imagine the marauders will be the sacrificial unit). The army lacks melee power but will hopefully make up for it with a deluge of mortal wounds from endless spells. It also aims to frustrate the opponent's movement with things like Be'lakor, Binding Damnation & Realmscourge Rupture, not to mention a screen of endless spells to get through.  Mark of Tzeentch will help my units survive any endless spells that get turned back against me.

No idea what artifacts would be good for this list. None of the Cabalist ones were particularly appetizing except maybe the auto unbind one.  Not sold on the battalion but I do think this army wants to go first and get all its endless spells out early- or is it better to let the opponent come to you and then smash em with spells, maybe even get the double turn (obviously no good against alpha striking armies). Dropping the battalion allows another caster and maybe a unit of cultists for sacrificing. Thoughts?

Have you considered dropping one unit of Horsemen for the Snake Warband? You do d3 mortal wounds, but the unit summons a snake once per turn so you can sustain it a bit longer.

  4. I'll jump in on this, my productivity has been terrible and a little incentive to get stuff done would be handy.

    I pledge to get:

    5 Chaos Knights fully painted

    3 Varanguard fully painted

5 Chaos Knights fully built (3 are undercoated, 2 need some more greenstuff)

3 "Command" Varanguard fully sculpted (One is done and partially painted, the other two are very WIP)

20 Marauders fully painted (They've been undercoated for a few weeks now. The painting will be rough as these are stand ins until I convert nicer ones).

Is this confirmed? In Warscroll builder the Knights of the Empty throne are pickable as a Legion.

    The book says;

"When you are choosing a Slaves to Darkness army, you can decide if it is a Knights of the Empty Throne army and has the Knights of the Empty Throne allegiance instead of another allegiance.."

Slaves is an Alleigance, so by me reading you'd lose them. I hope the FAQ clears it up.

I got Clansmen as all my armies/table are Ice themed. Will get you some pics in the next day or two.

I've got the same, they scale well next to Chaos Warriors and Knights. They'll get replaced with a heavily converted mix of Bloodreavers, Kairic Acolytes and Witch Aelves eventually.

What does everyone think of the Fist of the Everchosen army? I know its not technically not a Slaves army, but it has the same base pool of units to draw from.

The reroll charge command trait as well as the 6" pile in artefact look very strong, is just the tradeoff to get them is massive.  You lose allies, the Marks, spells, battleline options and Archaon.

Hey, I have a general question about S2D. Does this army have any access to shooting? I usually prefer shooty armies but this one does not seem to have good shooting units, unless you consider alliance with Tzeentch, correct?

Soulgrinder, Javelins on Marauder Horsemen, maybe something else. Its more a melee oriented army.

I'm am hesitating to buy the great blade kit to make them hit at rend -1. So, how to build the unit?

How comfortable are you with converting? You can make great blades from the regular kit by cutting the top/bottom off hand weapons and gluing them together.

edit: Not mine, but the ones on the left/right

So, I just started putting real thought into a despoilers list and I use Be’lakor as the general.  With a Warshrine, Be’lakor as Despoiler General gets the following saves: 4+ unmodified armor save, 5+ Despoilers General FNP, 6+ Undivided General FNP, 6+ Warshrine Aura!!  And, he heals d3 every hero phase and every time a unit fails a battle shock.

Be'lakor wouldn't get the Warshrine aura as it only affects Mortals sadly.

Great idea. Maybe it's an oversight....

What's the email address for that? Maybe the more people that ask, the better the chances....

And, it is a bit oddly worded. They do mention that you are choosing a "Slaves to Darkness" army, but then say you have a different allegiance.  Does that mean you can take any StD units? If so, what counts as battle line? etc, etc. They left quite a few questions.

    aosfaq@gwplc.com

Its a longshot, but maybe it was a mistake.

Really disappointed in how this was written. I like the idea of making Varanguard heros. But they made it it's own allegiance, so you lose StD,

I was really surprised it isn't a sub army like Cabalists etc. I did send the FAQ team an email on the off chance it was wrong :D

  12. I had a think about this army while doing some tedious jobs at work.

The summoning potential seems insane, If you put 3 Gaunt Summoners in you can pump out 40 Pink Horrors turn 1, then 10 more each turn. Throw in Bel'akor and Karanak for debuffs and a bit more summoning, 1x10 man unit of Bloodletters, Plaguebearers and Daemonettes for Bel'akor to hang around with. 9 Bloodcrushers to use the command ability on, that leaves 180 points spare.

Its stupid and not something i'd ever do, just a bit of fun to think about.

  13. I've been running 15 Chosen with Mark of Khorne backed up by a Khorne Lord. They hit hard, but they aren't easy to reposition and i've struggled with going through screens, which means they normally get hit with whatever is behind. I've changed my army up, but kept 5 in to be backline objective holders that can swing back at any outflanking or teleporting shenannigans.

When I run them in the future, I think i'll run them undivided as they normally get targeted. They aren't very tanky so I tend to lose 4 to battleshock a game, I think rerolling 1s isn't worth having 140 points just run away when they could just be immune.

edit: Also sod Finecast :D Mine are a mix of Chaos Knights, Forsaken, miscellaneous bitz and a lot of Greenstuff.

  14. What would you guys say is the best weapon for chaos knights? I've started a Slaves to Darkness army and plan on running at least 10 of them. While the glaiveslook brutal on the charge, hitting on 4s (3+) with a lord on steed using his command ability) seems a bit too swing compared to the ensorcelled weapons.

Wish the Anniversary GoS wasnt 40 on ebay : D

Where abouts in the world are you? My "local" GW is having it's birthday this weekend (Reading), if you cover postage I'd gladly sell it at retail price.

There is also a group on dakkadakka that does this sort of thing, buying exclusives and selling them at retail price plus postage.

Also thanks for walking me through the briar queen, it's a shame as she is a lovely model. I may give her a go while I get the other stuff for my list, I've no immediate plans for tournaments or competitive play.

  16. My gaming club is slowly coming around to the idea of AoS, so I want to get one of the armies I brought up to snuff.  Moon clan grots seems a bit sparse so I'll leave them be, so ghosts it is.

The briar queen seems like a really good caster, cheap and with a good denial spell, is anyone else using her? What second spell would work best on her?

  17. I think it was just a highlight. Looking at the sprues the ribs are moulded on the spoopy skin so it should be easy.

I may use the glaivewraith stalkers to make my Hexwraiths centaurs as I'm not a fan of the current riders. If something in the book makes them better, they should be cheap enough to rebuy.

Edit: I'll have 8 from 2 starters, 2 glaivewraith stalkers from both units ( as you get 5 but they are in 4 man units) will get scythes.

The alternative is to see what the bladegheists are like. I've got 5 sister of silence arms spare that I can use to convert them to if these guys are cool enough.

  18. I've been looking over the new Nighthaunt rules as I've already got 2k of Nighthaunt, and i'm stumped by the glaivewraith stalkers. They seem to be slower and cheaper (because of smaller units) of grimghast reapers.

I know they get rerolls to hit when they charge and that the drummer lets them retreat and still charge, but unless I've missed something the grimghast do their job better purely because of their rend.

Also I've cobbled together a 2k list I'll be trying when the army drops, I'm still an aos newbie as I've not played much despite buying a bucketload of models. This list will change with games and of course new shiney toys.

    Heroes

    *Lady Olynder

    *Guardian of Souls

*Knight of Shrouds on ghost horsie

     *Spirit Torment

    Battleline

    *40 Chainwrasp

    *6 Spirit hosts

    *6 Spirit Hosts

    *5 Hexwraiths

    *5 Hexwraiths

    Other

    *2 Chainghasts

    *4 Myrmoan Banshees

    * 8 Glaivewraith Stalkers

The rough idea is to set up a grind, with Hexwraiths for objective grabbing and the big blob of chainrasps to hold one. Olynder would keep pumping out spirit hosts and debuffing enemy units with the other heroes supporting where needed.

I can see some potential with Olynder's spell and grimghast reapers, hitting on 3s rerolling with a 10 man unit should do a fair bit of damage.
