  1. Not sure why everyone hates on soup. Maybe it’s people who didn’t play whfb, only now armies were ripped apart to make sub factions, looking at you FEC and NH. (NH specifically, wascreated out of three units: wraith, banshee and spirit hosts. 2 hero and one elite/ non counting core depending on edition)

”soup” let’s creative minds run wild with conversions and themes.  Since building heroes was wiped in place of character hammer, I welcome more soups as a means for customizing and themes to flow instead of the mundane.

well, yes, it isn't LoN, it's Soulblight Gravelords

The point is that it’s the new LoN because they said so, it actually isn’t a representation of the soup that was the LoN at the time. A new LoN would be all encompassing soup of all death factions. This is more or less hamfisted bats zombies and skeletons

Yeah, interesting that they show six icons and only name and describe five vampire bloodlines. I'd guess the Big Hat icon could end up being a faction more oriented towards Necromancers?

Overall, pretty thrilled with what we've seen so far. My old Vampire Counts army (still on square bases!) had a bunch of units that ended up in the Flesh-Eater Courts, and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to use them in Soulblight except as allies. Instead, my Terrorgheists and Zombie Dragon can even be battleline if I choose, which is way more than I expected. It looks like Vargheists are sticking around as well.

The only slight disappointment is that the Cursed City units all have to be purchased as a single choice and will probably be terrible. I guess they can be used as proxies instead.

I can't yet decide whether I want to go with the Legion of Blood and make an army out of all those Black Knights I've been painting, or go Avengorii and put my monsters to good use (and pick up Lauka Vai since I love how she looks). It's the good kind of dilemma to have!

Honestly, I just wanted the “classic units” back, mainly the ethereal: spirit host (elite), banshee & wraith (heroes), black coach (rare).  Sure add in ghouls.. I just wanted the classic blend to play with

  4. Very curious if this winged SCE is a new look moving forward or a one off “angel”.

personally I liked the radiant light wings and was something different that drew from some famous sculptures.

Since this new character is a big bad, which will rival the celestant prime, the “end all be all”, what stat adjustment will it receive so one just doesn’t outright replace the other since SCE have a lot of units that seem to do that..

does my dream of Crab people still live on?

It is a top view of the big claw. You can tell by the 3 side spikes and the ridges on the inside of the claws. Barnacles are the same

And ghouls.  And ossiarchs.  You really going to begrudge other undead factions existing?

the book is also confirmed to include rules for grand alliance death allegiance, so if you want vamps and ghosts without resorting to the ally rules, there will be an allegiance for that.

probably not a viable or even terribly functional rule set, but still.

The point I am making is that vampires classically always have had spirit hosts, black coach (reviving vampire and transport), wraith and banshee.

By that logic all things not bat or werewolf-vampire heros should be moved to their own books ie zombie or skeleton.

obr is its own thing. Fec and nh are a product of splitting up VC because it was in vogue to make a ton at the start of AoS. FeC is now the defunct strigoi.

im not saying VC should have all of it. I’m just saying classically they have had the basics.

we all know things baked in are always better than alliances.

anyone remember when TK came out? Yeah, VC also had non Egyptian mummies. But hey I just want some basic ghosts action

  7. I think there are nice things here, but the army is disjointed. On one hand you have the flanged armor of the blood knights and vampires that have been a thing for quite a while. Then you have the injection of “kislev” vampire characters. Which aesthetically is disjointed by everything else in the army. Hell all wolves in the army except the two on the wolf riding lady are dead but hers.

zombies wolves and bats are generic

skeletons have a new look of heavily armored that rival graveguard, also in stature.

With the exception of leman Russ returned from the warp, I mean Radukan (obvious big were-vampire), vampires including bloodknights are all big but not Sigvald in size. Enter the hamfisted, everyone gets a “centaur” but BoC.  Why are they so big? Why wouldn’t the mortarch vampires have that kind of stature if they are so powerful? I’m fine with a named character like this, but the alt build should have been a abyssal terror type mount or mourghast thing. This smells of not knowing wtf to do for a centerpiece, it’s completely disjointed to have a giant half vampire thing. Now if it was a “form” like morathi then sure that works.

lastly, the removal of all things “night haunt”.  The black coach has always had a reviving vampire in it and was a part of VC before bloodknights existed. Spirit hosts, wraith and banshee also a classic VC units.   FEC and NH are only separate because gw split it up for AoS. However there are FEC units present in SG. So the basic & classic VC ethereal units need to remain NH for what reason? By that logic SG should only have bat things and zombies and skeletons be completely removed. Seems oddly specific that the grave sites these vampires lord over are void of tormented spirits.

there is a lot of potential for great conversions. But for me this was a blow hoping for a return of more “classic” VC instead of overloading on Russian themed vampire characters.

  8. Sad that classic VC units like spirit hosts, banshee, wraith and black coach ( with vampire) are not included.

I think the big named vampire centaur is fine, but the alt build should have been a regular vampire on abyssal terror.
Considering how big this center piece is it begs the question why the mortarch vampires aren’t that big. Honestly seems like bad design choice.

anyone wanting to argue that night haunt are their own thing, so are FEC but some of their units are in. NH and FEC are a product of GW splitting the armies. So by that logic zombies and skeletons shouldn’t be in this either and only bat things.

other thing that is odd is the injection if “kislev” vampires. Where most of the characters and vamps available are in that style where bloodknights don’t share that new aesthetic.

Replacing skeletons with a different aesthetic, heavy armor on basic infantry next to the now derpy looking grave guard. The only unifying theme is that they are skeletons in armor, but the aesthetics, motion etc are all contrasting.

Pretty sure black coach is just a ghosty thing now.

As for basic spirit hosts & the like, I mean, the game does have rules for allies.

Allies aren’t as good as things being baked in. As for the coach, it would just be odd since it’s always been linked with how vampires get around/ heal. So I hope they update the flavor text if they don’t plan on including if in this book
