Abilities re-roll sequence

ssharkus

Question

Hello.

-------Situation 1-------

Putrid Blightking is attacking Stromcast liberator which is under Divine Light Prayer. PBK rolls 6 on hit roll - his ability gives him D6 hits on a hit roll of 6. SCL has Divine Light that makes enemy units re-roll hit rolls of sixes.

1. Does PBK score a succesful hit on that exact hit because 6 is always succsess?   We have 2nd Rule of One "this applies to the roll after any re-rolls have been taken" - so, i guess, no, he needs to re-roll first?

2. Does PBK get his extra hits from his ability before re-rolling that six? Whos ability triggers first?

3. If PBK re-rolls 6 and gets 6 again - does he need to re-roll it again?

4. We have the rule that states "re-rolls before modifiers" and "abilities about failed/succesful rolls trigger after modifiers". What about ability vs. ability?

-------Situation 2-------

Crypt Horror is attacking same Stromcast liberator which is under Divine Light Prayer. CH has a re-roll failed hit rolls ability from Attendants at Court battalion. He rolls a 6.

5. How does the sequence go in this case?  CH rolls a 6 to hit, rerolls it because of SC ability, then scores 1 and re-rolls it because of his own ability?     No modifiers here, again ability vs. ability.

Thanks in advance

The sequence is:

  1. Roll dice
  2. Apply re-rolls (never re-roll a re-roll)
  3. Apply Rules of One
  4. Apply modifiers
  5. Apply abilities that trigger on a certain result

Divine Light is a re-roll ability, so it happens at step 2. The PBK bonus attacks happens at step 5. You must re-roll the six, if it becomes a miss then you don't get the extra attacks and the Rules of One do not apply. If it becomes another six then you don't re-roll it again (never re-roll a re-roll), so you do get the bonus attacks and you do hit.

In situation 2, simply pick up all the 6s and all the failed hits, then re-roll them all together, once. If you'd rather re-roll the 6s first or the failed hits first that's ok, but it doesn't matter because once a dice has been re-rolled you don't re-roll it again, not even because of a different ability.

As per the FAQ and hints and tips, in the case of abilities triggering from the same event the player whose turn it is decides the sequence of resolution.

However, one ability affects the dice roll and the other triggers on the result. The FAQ says you resolve modification abilities first (true, it doesn't specifically state rerolls but the logic would seem to be the same).

So in this case, you'd reroll 6's regardless of whose turn. I think. But you don't reroll a reroll.
