Piling in and deadwatch battalion

As I understand things you can not pile in after you are already in base contact, is this true? Because that would make the dead-watch battalion for flesh eater courts a lot less potent than I originally thought.

Correct.

#toptip: You don't *have* to move into contact to attack.

And even if you're already in contact, you can still attack even if you don't pile-in, as per the combat phase.
