I did read that somewhere - but there's still no wargear option for a shield right? I know I might be overthinking this a little - i just it find it strange there's no option to have one. Even the model they showcase as an 'exalted hero' has a shield on it...
Ah well...I suppose my lord / hero will be having the shield to look cool and that's it I guess
Yep thats life

you could run him as an exalted hero of chaos, which seems to be the place for the older chaos models

Rotbringers is an interesting one seeing as blightkings is the only kit that makes sense, unless they include marauders and chaos warriors

the facial structures of your examples are indeed spot-on.
So from my understanding of the lore with space marines is they're (mostly with exceptions like the emperors children and the blood angels) meant to be ideally masculine to the point of disgust. So sharp featured, so square jawed and so hugely muscled that they are in fact hideous to look at. This is my own conjecture here, i think that the gw designers looked at guys who used testosterone or its derivatives (dianabol etc) in excess. With those drugs you start to get those features. Really square jaws and cheek growth. Of course this doesn't excuse other faces but even then i think it serves a practical design purpose. The technology wasn't soften the facial features, make them look more realistic and have it still show through on the models so it was necessary to have chunky faces for a long time, and now its kinda the gw look. As some of the miniature designers retire, and as the others discover how to use the technology the faces are gradually changing and softening (genestealer cults and sisters of battle for example) but a particular hideousness is still necessary for ease of painting and moulding.

I do not think we can. Every single model GW produces undergoes a costly process of design and production and needs to get approved at several stages of the process. They would not do it for a model they thought was bad and damages the brand reputation (not that Teclis would do that for me, just speaking generally here).
We can safely assume that the people in charge think of every single model that gets approved as "winners", some more some less. My personal biggest gripe with GW models are the faces... the ****** faces. From Constipated Grandpa Teclis to Regurgitated Duke Nukem Reject Space Marines... This is what the designers prefer, so this is what we will get untill a whole new generation of designers emerge.
Recently, I've heard of several 40k players telling me they didn't like the AoS design influence creeping in... one of my favorite changes in recent years. Everyone not in touch with 40k in general, check out Mortarion, he was the first model I know of that was very AoS inspired and fits better between Nagash and Archaon than to any other of the big guys in 40k before him. That's also something that will absolutely not change, because it's so tied to the designers currently working at GW and the people needing to approve all new stuff.
I very much agree with the premise that rules sell models and those that are notably unusable in-game will sell worse than very similar looking units that are good. But the overall design philosophy will stick. More AoSy models for 40k and more punchable faces for me etc.
I think you'll find that space marines are in fact based on leon dijk

So this is my completely unassembled section here which is packed in quite tightly about 2 original boxes to each box now, I've also got a bunch of fishing tackle containers with semi assembled stuff, an assembled but unpainted shelf plus some stuff in fishing tackle containes, a primed shelf plus containers and 3 actually painted shelves.
