  1. The team at Creative Assembly has done an AMAZING job at bringing ToW to life. The cinematics and trailers they make are top-tier "Warhammer Content" IMHO. I would love to see them continue to support ToW for years to come, but I realise that the majority of the work is done. It would be my personal dream to see them actually release a full run of End Times DLC expansions starting in 1/2 year's time.

With entire sections of the world getting destroyed, heroic last stands, final goodbyes, and desperate attempts by great characters to navigate the End Times to try and see their souls be carried into the void. Cumulating in complete world destruction and the launch of a new Total War Warhammer: Age of Sigmar game.

  2. I picked it up early on Saturday morning. Took it home and read through it with a cup of tea. As I sat down it started pouring (one of those super summer showers) Reading through the RAIN OF DOUBT and of Alarielle's healing rains across the Everspring Swathe made me smile. :)

The book overall is good, the quality is there but the quantity is lacking. I was left wanting more and felt as though we just got snippets of information rather than significant substance. That "level" of information is good for a Warcom article, but a fully-fledged book? Not enough. I was also pretty disappointed by the lack of artwork, I also feel like it should be a rule that new books come with at least one new map.

    Solid B+ Grade.

    SPOILERS

I really liked the snippet regarding the Metaliths that float above the farming terraces of Hammerhal Ghyra and how the various merchants and farming barons competed to have them winched over their lands, as the Healing Rains had formed large pools and lakes on them containing the magical water, which they wanted for their crops.

The SUBTERRANEAN MENACE and the Grots emerge in the Glass Foundry and proceed to trash the place. "Bull in a China Shop" should become "Goblin in a Glass Foundry" :D

Think it would have been cooler for Fjori to lose his fingers and eye in an epic fight with Braggit, rather than having them torn off by some random Squig/Squigbat.

This is an excellent idea and I think very different to outright binning whole factions.

There is a difference between thinking a product line made for the ToW, should be sold under the Old World Banner and AoS kits sold under a AoS banner to wanting something to be "binned". As I said, if the Bonesplitter sales are there, then GamesWorkshop should do a full Bonesplitter range refresh. I just fundamentally think, that apart from a few exceptions AoS should be moving away from ToW kits almost entirely. (Dark Elves, High Elves, Bonesplitters, BoC, Ogors, Skaven) all should be "AoSified".

If 4th edition is going to "bin" any kits I would bin the Endless Spell kits. Anyways... just my thoughts. AoS players can rest easy. I don't think the AoS studio will be under my control any time soon. 😅

People act like big corporations are these hyper logical perfect business entities that are always doing the most hyper optimal moves; the reality is they're full of and run by absolute morons a lot of the time who have just consistently gotten lucky, or cornered a niche in the market and are operating on pure inertia, and the internal workings of said companies can be riven by drama, inter-office politics and giant egos.

    Truuuuue. 😅

I for one am very pleased you’re not in charge of the studio.

Fair enough. It's fun to daydream about it. I suppose it is just a fundamental difference in design philosophy. Just to be clear. I'm not advocating for a reduction in ranges. I'm advocating for the ranges to have a sort of "hard cap" for product lines (which some factions like Cities and Stomcast have reached IMO I don't think factions need more than 50 active Battlescrolls).

If you take AoS as one large product line and the GW website as where Gw is at in terms of its offerings. You have about 600 or so total product listings under the AoS Banner. (There are multiple listings for the same product, but I think roughly 600 is about the size of the AoS total line allocation)  I would like to see a total of 60/100 total products "added to the line", but almost as many "removed" from the line as well. Keeping the total number of offerings around 600 or so.

Others would like for the current 600 to stay and for new kits to be added so that each edition adds more and more.

When it comes to creative space I am much more of a death/rebirth kinda fella. It's good to have a clear-out every so often. I've used this metaphor before, but it's just like maintaining and cultivating a Tree (or plants in general) it is good to prune and remove the dead weight. Keep it healthy, fresh, and vibrant.

Now I'm just saying I think BS should be moved to TOW because they are from the OW. I also have 0 idea in regards to sale numbers. For all I know the BS might be shifting hundreds of kits a week and if I was privy to that information I would be singing an entirely different tune. It's just a subjective view of what I think works in a faction (mostly as it refers to the models as a "collection", not just as gaming bits.)

If you completely ignore the Bonesplitterz players (or even Bonesplitterz fans), then it might be a 'positive for everyone'. There's literally no guarantee that squatting Bonesplitterz leads to more IJ and KB too, and they have very different aesthetics and lore from BS that won't suddenly be replicated.

That's exactly what I am advocating. Sorry untold legions of Bonesplitters players. You can still use your models. Still, buy the models. Still paint the models. Still read about them in the lore. But they will be sold under the ToW banner rather than the AoS banner. That is literally all I am suggesting. So that they take up slots from ToW studio allotment, to free up space within the AoS range for more new AoS models.

So by that logic, why do Lumineth, Idoneth, Daughters of Khaine and Sylvaneth all exist?

Because Lumineth/Elves are one of the most popular fantasy archetypes? Have been given a NEW AoS identity and have huge room for expansion via Tyrion. Daughters of Khaine have been given a NEW AoS identity and have huge potential for expansion via Malerion and Sylvaneth have been given a NEW AoS identity with huge expansion opportunity via Kurnothi.

I think it is in the best interest for AoS to keep its ranges, factions and lore tight. I personally think that just continually adding things without the balls to cut stuff makes for a bloated, mixed mess in the long run. We saw it happen with Fantasy and 40k is struggling to maintain 2000+ datasheets. I have said this before, but If I were head of the AoS Studio I would cut the bottom 10/20% "performing" units (in terms of age/sale/gameplay) of every Faction, each edition. They would be retired and moved into either ToW (if they fit) or Legends and go into a MTO rotation.

I really don't see how the existence of BS is limiting the creativity for KB and IJ. The only thing limiting them from being expanded is being souped together, with all of them getting fewer and worse rules, lore and models. GW can easily expand the concept of savage mad Orruks without stepping on any other factions toes.

I suppose I am looking at it more from a business point of view. AoS Studio has a finite amount of resources when it comes to supporting kits. That is just a reality. If the choice is maintaining and supporting 6/7 Bonesplitter Kits for the Orruks in AoS or moving them to ToW range (so that they are still available to buy) PLUS having an additional 6/7 replacement Orruk kits in the Kruel Boy and Ironjaws aesthetic, then I think that would be a positive for everyone. It's literally expanding the number of models that can be purchased without creating a scenario where AoS ranges become huge bloated messes.

Yes. Of course, the AoS studio could do full factions worth of updates for the Bonesplitters. I'm sure they would be great as well. But looking at the game as a whole, is it better for those resources to be spent on maintaining and supporting 3 different types of Orruk? Or bulking out other factions? Remember there is a finite amount of slots.

  8. I think when it comes to Bonesplitters the situation is a bit different. With the approaching release of ToW, the Bonesplitters are basically all OW models. It's not the case that Bonesplitters will be retconned out of the setting, but rather the New Orruk Battletome tightens its focus to Kruelboys and Ironjaws. Allowing the Savage Orks to return (along with some other older Savage Ork kits) to ToW. People could still use the kits if they wanted to represent Orks (I can't see anybody taking exception to saying these 10 SO are Boys for example)

They could just retain the Bonesplitters in the New Orruk Battletome, (Because why not, they are already there) but it seems like GW is going to try and differentiate the AoS and ToW ranges. It's not even that people have a dislike for them or want them removed, it just makes sense in terms of how GW might organise the ranges.

I personally would really like to see the Bonesplitters out into the Studio for a repaint and rebase and presented alongside the Orcs and Goblins for ToW. It would free up a lot of creative space within the Orruk faction to explore new avenues for kits under the KB and IJ aesthetic.

  9. When it comes to Warhammer gaming, I don't think people realise just how big it is. The first Total War game, out-sold every Creative Assembly Total War game up until that point, COMBINED! The Total War Warhammer series has sold over 40 million copies! If Realms Of Ruin can emulate even a tiny bit of TWW success it will be amazing for AoS. I really hope the game does a good job of explaining the setting. Too many people still have no idea how cool the Mortal realms are as a setting. (I've spoken to many people who still think the game is like it was when it very first released and everything is still completely undefined.)

My opinion is, I think that once the grognards accept the reality TOW will be a limited scale game, they will become free of their bitterness and reach wargaming nirvana.

    Talk about fantasy! 😅

The grognards are definitely not a minority. I'd say they make a slight majority of the playerbase. Which is a problem to me... A game's community is very important for me if I want to play said game. That's why I've always said no when my friends told me to play League of Legends with them. Looking at the state of the Old World community right now, it does not make me want to play the game.

Don't really understand this point as there is no such thing as a "single community" when it comes to these massive IPs, there are many communities that follow the games. Imagine if the "40k community" was defined by somewhere like Dakka? That place puts all the collective negative and toxic grognards of ToW to shame on a daily basis. If I allowed a place like that to set the tone I wouldn't go near 40k with a 10,000 foot barge pole.

  11. Maybe my wording wasn't the best, but they are kept "purposefully" out of stock because each range will have its own rotation.  If there are a few dozen of a particular product line selling slowly and is about to run out of stock, then they will let it run out and stay listed as out of stock rather than clamoring to get a reprint made (which they could do). It's not a coincidence that every range on the UK GW site has a few kits out of stock, but no single full range is out of stock. That stock management is done purposefully. There are of course kits that have clearly just been misjudged in terms of supply/demand, but I think they might actually be less than people think.

  12. I do find it funny that people think that selling out very quickly and/or being out of stock is just a sign of success and not poor stock management. Unless something is a limited release, selling out/being out of stock is not a good thing. You want to keep your stock levels tight but not so tight that you are leaving a load of money on the table. There is obviously stock manipulation that goes on, in order to keep at least a few kits purposefully out of stock in each range to create a feeling that things are at a premium. However, the idea that because something is in stock and not instantly sold out, is a sign of "failure" is utterly absurd.

Soo... we're now getting Underworlds warbands repackaged as Warcry ones?

Yeah, they are stretching the "Two new warbands" to breaking point on the roadmaps. (Although I will likely pick it up as I have wanted those Vamps for ages and I'm always happy to pick up some more SC bois.

What if for 4th edition instead of a book and a hero, each faction got a book and an artillery piece? Doomdivers for gits, a lava cannon for Fyreslayers etc. You could even have a sons of Behemoth gargant who loves throwing things so much they count as artillery.

Exactly. There are multiple factions that will most likely be looking at a single kit update in 4th edition. I would much rather see that slot go to bulking out options other than heroes.

  15. I'm waiting to see if/what we might see in regards to Warmachines. I really want a cannon of some type. In general, AoS could do with a lot more actual Warmachines. There is a distinct lack of them across all factions, where are the trebuchets, catapults, onagers, canons and siege machines? If we see an expansion in 4th let it be something Siege/Warmachine related (Which would fit if Skaven are the primary antagonists

You know, seeing this, I had this utterly heretical thought. What if Cities had been saved for the 4th edition starter, versus Skaven, or one of the other "in need" factions?

I just can't face another "stormcast Vs X" box; whereas having an analogue to the 5th or (especially) the 6th edition WFB box, with a whole new "human" or "human/dwarf/elf" range, would have been lovely.

Im not sure, but are stormcast really popular enough to be relied on to draw in buyers in the way marines really carry 40k starters? Whereas Cities especially could and should provide AoS with a more solid core faction (hopefully with realm-based variations, as these are Asqhinian, right?)

I think there are times when people already familiar with Warhammer, take for granted that they already understand the settings. Having Sci-Fi Super Soldiers in Marines for 40k and Fantasy Super Soldiers in Stormcast for AoS, make for very digestible, understandable and marketable points of entry into incredibly vast IPs. I am actually really looking forward to where GW takes Stormcast in 4th. The faction has been gradually gaining more depth in lore and I really like the Thunderstrike armor proportions. As I have mentioned elsewhere, I just hope that GW endeavors to keep the range tight and doesn't allow it to become a bloated mess.
