  1. Last night i took my Beasts of Chaos love to the next stage... i wrote a poem for it!

I was reading my sons some poetry at bedtime and read them a poem called "She Dwelt Among the Untrodden Ways" by William Wordsworth. "Untrodden Ways" is such an evocative term that made me immediately think of beasts of chaos. So, later that evening i wrote an homage to that poem all about beasts.
Below is the original poem and my altered version. Enjoy my lack of literary skill!

    Original:
She Dwelt Among The Untrodden Ways – William Wordsworth

She dwelt among the untrodden ways
    Beside the springs of Dove,
A Maid whom there were none to praise
    And very few to love:

A violet by a mossy stone
    Half hidden from the eye!
—Fair as a star, when only one
    Is shining in the sky.

She lived unknown, and few could know
    When Lucy ceased to be;
But she is in her grave, and, oh,
    The difference to me!

    Homage:
They Dwelt Among The Untrodden Ways – Josh Richards aka Tullbeard aka definitely-not-a-good-poet

They dwelt among the untrodden ways
    Beside the pools of blood,
A horde whom there were none to faze
    A never-ending flood.

    Effigies upon a stone,
    Grotesque to the eye!
Foreboding as a star, all alone,
The last one in the sky

They lived unknown, and few did know
    What would come to be
But we are in the grave now, and, oh
    Now they come for thee

  2. I don’t think I’m allowed to post extracts from the battletome here, but I’ve been frantically searching for salvation as to how Kragnos could still be for beasts of chaos.

Page 10 of the Beasts of Chaos Battletome talks about the ‘Legend of the Prime Progenitor’.

    I’m convinced this is Kragnos.

    My take:

Beastmen are descended from Kragnos. Kragnos imprisoned by Kroak. In his absence, beastmen devolve into chaos. Kragnos is back and will reclaim beastmen from the grips of Chaos.

I think (read: delusionally hope) that you can take Kragnos is a beasts of chaos allegiance, but doing so makes you Destruction allegiance (I.e. no chaos allies, choose allies from destruction) and you’re forced to only include Brayherd and Warherd units (I.e. everything else in the battletome is too mutated or chaos aligned).

Any thoughts? Delusional ramblings? Or is our salvation around the corner?!

    P.S. Please GW

Quick update on the tournament list i posted at the end of the week now the tournament is over. I came 9th out of 18 so for my first time i'm pretty pleased.

Played squig heavy gloomspite, skryre skaven and troggoths with rogue idol.

The highlight was the beastlord with gnarlblade killing a collosal squig in the first round of combat after ambush.

Lowlight was the fact that its hard to kill even a single troggoth with their 4+ armour and 5+ feel no pain. Any suggestion as to how to deal with that is welcomed.

Summoning chariots kept me alive in the skaven game as there were 12 stormfiends, 30 acolytes ans 6 jezzails shooting the hell out of everything.

Biggest mistake was ambushing ungor raiders and a screen of bestigor without a hero for inspiring presence so one round of shooting and combat with some stormfiends finished them off.

Any further suggestions are still welcomed as i believe there'll be another club tournament in the early new year.

    Awesome, thanks for the update.

Glad to hear you got on well.

How did you find Grashrak with the Balewind worked? Was it successful or was it hard to get the spells off when needed?

I absolutely love Ghorgons, did he work well for you?

What kind of units did you summon in the game? Spawn?

🙂 Thank you, but it is Josh Richards army. The unit composition fits well though.

Hey, thanks for the shout out! Was a bit of a surprise to see my army posted here!

If anyone’s interested, that scroll at the back of the board contains a super cheesy back story I put together for the army! Would be happy to share.

I do love the Darkling Covens and hope we get some more love soon - was disappointed by the lack of a spell lore in the GHB.

maybe Cities of Sigmar will breathe some life into the range?

The army list posted above looks great. The dragon with impossibly swift and Gryph Feather charm works so well.

    @Tullbeard

if i understood the post correctly then we cant Change anything in the list due to model issues?

I too think that you have not enough bodies. You might have difficulties with objectives and the sustain of your army. Without maxing out your troops you dont make use of Point reductions in your army. However it is not a bad list. If you can Change something I would take out two Sorceresses or one dragon for more troops.

Lets talk tactics. You have literally no unit that can last more then one Close combat Phase against a serious attack. So I recommend Holding your troops together. The two objective grabber Units of Khinerai hurt your staying power also. Do not fly the two Dragons off. You Need them behind your Units to generate attack force and threat. Keep in mind that enemy Missile Units are very scary for you. Keep the less important like Darkshards or Spears in front of your elite troops to soak up the first Charge. Donit expect them to do anything. The damage must come from your spells, Dragons with rend and Mortal wound executioners.

Before the tournament your should do a lot of practice games so you trust your force and keep every rule in mind without looking it up.

Try to think about bad matchups for your army and how you would beat your own army. This will make you develop Counter tactics and develop Reactions.

Most games are won in the movement Phase! So study the table were you will be playing and try to figure out how you Keep your strength together.

At last I wish you good luck and Khaines Blessing.

Thanks a lot for the tips and great advice.

Yeah it’s a shame I don’t have time to change the army list much at the moment. But I am going to the Gt final in October so I have plenty of time to tweak it for then.

For that, I could drop a sorceress and the command point to put in another 10 executioners.

What are your views of the Heartrenders? I like them for objective grabbing, but do you think I’d be better putting those points into executioners?

  6. Hi all,

I’ve been playing around with a few different Darkling Covens lists to take to the upcoming Blackout tournament in Cardiff.

The choice of list is somewhat driven by what I have painted and what I think is realistic to paint in time.

The list has 3 main elements:

    1. Four sorceresses, 2 on dragons, to provide a great deal of magical support (and really push that army identity)

    2. The Thrall Warhost batallion

    3. Two units of khinerai heart renders to provide a degree of movement flexibility for objective seizing.

    So the list is:

1 Sorceresss on Black Dragon (General) -Impossibly Swift; Incorporeal Retainer

1 Sorceress on Black Dragon - Decanter of Egos

    1 Sorceress

    1 Sorceress

    20 Black Guard

    10 Executioners

    10 Dark Shards

    10 Dark Shards

    10 Dreadspears

    5 Khinerai Heartrenders

    5 Khinerai Heartrenders

    Thrall Warhost

    Geminids of Uhl-Gysh

    Chronomantic Cogs

    Extra Command Point

The Thrall Warhost is fairly bare bones in terms of the executioners and Black guard unit sizes; but I don’t really have time to add another block or two to them. Plus 10 executioners is still plenty to put a serious dent in most things. I personally prefer the 20 Black Guard.

With Cogs, Decanter of Egos and an extra command point (for run and charge), i have a surprising amount of speed I could unlock if the enemy doesn’t deploy correctly and the Cogs go off.  If that doesn’t work, I can fall back on the good counter-charge tactics of the batallion.

The heartrenders are for dropping on objectives and maybe annoying/slightly threatening (I’m in no illusions about their relatively limited damage potential) enemy wizards etc.

Blackout is using Realm rules (including spells)and so having 4 spell casters will give me plenty of spells to choose from.

I like the double dragon option, as it lets my general (and coven master) hang back, whilst the other can charge headlong into danger!

What are people’s thoughts on the dragons base size? Mine are currently based on 120x92, and I think they look great. Personally not looking forward to moving them to smaller ovals.

Any way, would love to hear people’s thoughts on the list and any tactics for during the game.

  7. I agree that it's very unlikely that Witch Aelves will get put into a new Shadowkin faction. The daughters of khaine have a very strong and recognisable theme and are in a great spot overall - they just need a battletome to be a fully fledged army.

I think we will see very few, if any, current dark Elf models repurposed into Shadowkin. I suspect it will be like the Sylvaneth release and in many ways they will be only half-elf and maybe half-shadow demons (think like the tree revenants).

One exciting option could be a dual release of Shadowkin and Light Elves. Imagine a release where each box has 2 build options, one for shadow elves and one for light elves. They could do some cool stuff to make the two factions fairly similar but visually distinct. This would retain the whole concept of the Sundering; Same species essentially, just seperated by circumstance and location (only in this case, circumstance and location can turn you into a shadowy monster or a being of pure light)

  8. This sounds good to me, and right on my doorstep!

Can you put down Josh Richards please; and I'll pay using Paypal shortly

Sounds like a good event - thanks for organising!

Update: I've now sent you the money

  9. Also curious about Aelves. I'm about to start rebasing my dark elf army and am not sure what the best way to go is.

My army is big blocks of infantry (Darkshards and Dreadspears etc), so I think 25mm would look better. A huge block of 30 spearmen on 32mm rounds would look a bit to sparse I think; they should be a bit closer packed together as their job entails.

but then I also have a large block of black guard and don't want people thinking I'm modelling for advantage by putting them on 25. However I think having similar sized elves on different sized bases would start to look a bit uneven.

What size bases are the elf heroes in Silver Tower supplied with? Are these a good guide or are they larger to be more impressive for this game?

In the sylvaneth range, tree revenants come on 32mm rounds, would that be a good comparison?
