  1. Played two games this weekend with this Praetorians list:

    • Katakros
    • Soulmason
    • 2 x 20 Mortek Guard w/ Blades
    • 5 x Deathriders w/ Blades
    • 2 x Crawler
    • Harvester
    • Carrion and Shrieker
    • Nexus

Beat a Hunter heavy Winterleaf Sylvaneth list and a Hallowheart Hurricanum/Multicaster list w/ 30 Phoenix Guard and a Phoenix.  In both cases the Crawlers did the most valuable work, pegging the Arch Revenant in the top of round one to take away the Hunter support, and wounding the Hurricanum badly enough in turn one to prevent it channeling before systematically picking out the casters in the following rounds.

The Sylvaneth game was still close.  2 packs of six hunters and 70 Dryads on the board to start, with a Wraith hiding in the woods summoning more each turn.  I lost the Harvester, one Crawler and the Deathriders in this game but managed to win.  The Hallowheart list folded like a lawnchair once I crippled the casters.  One unit of 20 guard with Harvester support and a constant -1/-2 to hit from the Scrollbearer and the Nexus completely neutered the PG unit, even with Phoenix support.  The Harvester basically killed the Phoenix on his own while keeping the Mortek Guard up and running, and then piled in to help finish the job.  Tabled the opponent and ended up losing only eight Mortek Guard in the end, most of those to a unit of 40 Swordsmen with Burning Ward on them exploding.

I'm happy with this list overall, but I think the Shrieker is redundant, and the Mason despite having two casts really wasn't effective.  I'll likely drop them both and add in another Crawler or maybe a Liege.

  2. Speaking of terrain, as written do the two Crawler special shots require line of sight?  They just say select a unit within range.  It's not a standard attack procedure.

Edit - Asked this in the rules forum as well, curious to get opinions.

    It goes like this:

hit -> wound -> hero's armor save -> soulbound protector roll -> deathless warriors

The Immortis unit does not get to use their armor save when using the soulbound protector rule to take wounds directed at the hero.  The soulbound protector rule triggers on allocating wounds to the hero, and wounds are allocated only after any armor saves have already been rolled.

Yeah no idea why I thought that, I think I was equating the 5++ vs MWs that Archai had with Nagash.  All good, thanks!

  4. Can someone spell out the order of saves when an Immortis uses Soulbound Protector to protect a hero?

Is it hit -> wound -> hero saves -> Soulbound Protector roll -> Immortis saves or does the hero not get to save first?

edit:  Same as Nagash, nevermind.  Just a brainfart.

Looks nice.  imo bludgeons are better than sickles on the harvester.  Additionally, I'd take a boneshaper instead of the soulmasin - healing is too important.  That also frees up 10 points to upgrade the soulstealer to a shrieker, which imo is the better dpel for your support caster to cast, and I don't generally like to cast soulbound spells w/arkhan since they eat away at his important casting bonus.

Another thing to consider is combining the morteks into one big unit, and splitting the riders into 2 of 5.  Consolidates your infantry power, maximizes individual buffs, and lets you be more flexible with your faster units.  Also frees up 80 points, which you could use for more endless spells, or drop the one you already have for the ballistari formation, assuming you've also traded the mason for a shaper, to get another RD point a turn, and protect your catapults.

I liked the Mason to get Soul-Guide on the Catapults, which is where I imagine he'll be parked.  I could potentially drop the Harvester and run both casters?  Drop to one unit of 30 Guard, split the Deathriders like you suggested...

I love the fact that this army doesn't have one obvious build!

My only thought is that I would go for the bludgeons instead of the sickles on the Harvester.  There are so many sources of +1 hit in this army that I think you'll get more mileage out of some extra MWs. Interested to hear what others think though!

Yeah I go back and forth.  The MWs aren't in addition to the regular -2 rend 2D hit so I see them as good, but not great.  In this list I need my casters doing damage too so not sure what kind of buffing I'll be doing.  Totally agree though, that both options are attractive.

You might find yourself RDP starved with only 2 guaranteed a round. I would maybe get yourself a Liege-Kavalos (200 points) to take you to 4 guaranteed (Liege gives you 1 on top of the hero 1). You would have to drop something though

Yeah it's an issue.  I can always use one casting attempt from Arkhan to generate the points but that's not ideal.  Not sure what I could drop, I think the Crawlers really need to be in pairs at least.  Maybe reduce one guard unit to 10 and take a Boneshaper?  Not as good as the Kavalos for RDP but still another guaranteed +1.

  7. I think I have my first 2K list sorted.  My only issue is lack of RDP points, but I think it's a solid list overall:

    Petrifex Elite

    Arkhan the Black

Mortisan Soulmason - General, Mighty Archaeossian, Godbone Armour, Drain Vitality

Mortek Guard x 20 - Blades, Necrophoros, Hekatos

Mortek Guard x 20 - Blades, Necrophoros, Hekatos

Kavalos Deahtriders x 10 - Spears, Necrophoros, Hekatos

    Gothizzar Harvester - Sickles

    Mortek Crawler

    Mortek Crawler

    Soulstealer Carrion

    Bone-Tithe Nexus

    2k points exactly.  Thoughts?

It just means that instead of having to roll to wound and the opponent being able to do an armour save at -2 you wound automatically and the opponent can't do any armour save at all. It's not supposed to do additional damage, just make it even harder to prevent the damage.

Right but -2 rend is pretty good as well so while you do guarantee the damage with the MW is it better than +1 to hit against units with 5+ models?

That's why I find this choice tricky.  Bludgeons for monsters and heroes and Sickles for hordes I guess.  Given his harvest rule he's more likely to be going after hordes I'd think but no guarantee.

The +1 hit of the sickle is situational and there are several other sources of this buff in the army, hence I think the bludgeons are better with the mw output

I thought so too, but the 2MW ends the sequence so you lose 2D at rend -2.

    Hard to call it.

  10. I'm just reading through my book and Mortal Contract is even better than I thought.  It has a limitation that it only can be cast on one unit per hero phase, but not that it can't be stacked at all.

So it can be cast on a unit multiple times.  It's a absolute hero destroyer.  Alongside the Cursed Stele no hero is safe against this army.

You wont have much board presence with that. You'll even be outnumbered by Ironjawz and Oogrs lol both of which are supremely faster then the bonebros. Think about that...

I'm not sure how this army gets board presence.  All the Battleline is expensive and everything else is Elite.

  12. Yup, the issue is against a horde he just feeds it the screens until he has enough DPoints to bring in a second and/or third KoS.  It might work if the list lacked mobility but it doesn't.

Someone is going to try 9 Longstrikes against it this week.  Ranged rend/mortals is our best guess so far but the same issue with speed is there, he can close with your shooters very quickly and any list that has heavy ranged rend or mortals tends to lack the points to screen 60 bestigors effectively.

  13. Looking for advice on taking this Slaanesh beastman list down.  We are a very friendly group so when a hard list like this hits, we all like to take a crack at it and see what works, and this list is unbeaten against all comers:

Heroes - KoSecrets (Thrill-seeker, Ghyrstrike, Ritual Knife, Hysterical Frenzy), 2 x Great Bray Shaman, Beastlord, Bladebringer (Cameo of the Dark Prince)

    Battleline - 4 x 10 Gors

    Other - 2 x 30 Bestigors

    Warscroll Battalion - Depraved Drove

It's a simple list at it's core, screen with Gors, stack up depravity points, hit with the Bestigors and summon more KoS.  It's simple, fast, hits like a ton of bricks, well screened and depravity points build faster than you can imagine.

    Thoughts?
