  1. Haven't delved that deep yet but just wanted to say a quick thanks for the quality of the work and making it super easy to have the most up to date version! We're talking about starting a Path to glory campaign locally and I was a bit bummed that the current one didn't have any tables of followers or anything like in the "good old days" (seems like I've become a gruntled vet without realising it :') )

Related to the above; holy ****** stop making abilities that add extra damage or rend on a hit roll of 6. It is irritating because it means those wound rolls have to be made separately and slows down gameplay for no appreciable benefit. Have them happen on the wound roll instead.

This so much, it used to be the case for the old plague monks warscroll and they re-wrote in a more complicated way :(

Black stone fortress collected some of the best rules from both silver tower and hammerhal from what I saw.

I skipped hammerhal because ill never play with a GM. I skipped blackstone because the sci-fi look didn’t interest me. so if it’s the same mechanics as blackstone in fantasy I’d be happy

What I’m really curious about, not having played blackstone , what did they learn from it?
every quest since silver tower had some fundamental changes. So what will it be.

Blackstone Fortress added a progress notion based on fulfilling some conditions (with the equivalent of "normal" stateline and "inspired " stateline).

The enemies were much more "clever" and made decision based on the conditions, (am I range, to shoot? to hit? to charge? am I visible? can I move fast enough etc)

The notion of progress in the game was quite well handled as well. I never managed to finish it, but it was clearly the best out of the 3 and you could tell it was building upon them !

*edit reading other comments: it also had 2 packs of cards "adventures in rooms" and "mini games" and mixing an equal amount of both made the Quest on that session.

Also some triggering conditions such as killing enemies in the room and calling a transport to move out of a room.

*edit 2 : and different dice, based on how good people are in CC, short range, long range. Not using solely D6 !

The cos battletome says that armies of the cities must come from specific realms.  For example, Anvilgard and Aqshy. That makes sense lorewise, but does realm of origin affect army rules?

Where can i find the rules?  Im at a loss

    thx

Not sure if it's still applicable, but the artefacts and spells of malign sorcery were dependent on Realm of Origin. So a city from Aqshy couldn't have a Ghur artefact on one of their hero (haven't played in a while so happy to be corrected if I'm wrong about this) .

  5. The one thing I would tolerate is having your champion also carrying a special weapon (such as a Liberator-Prime with a Greatsword. )

But trying to combine musicians and bannermen just seems pure optimisation that goes against the way the game has been for ages, I would frown upon it tbh.

If the people you play with are happy to, go ahead though.

When starting the hobby you should never be TOO concerned with the current power builds. Rules change and the next "meta dominating list, so broken" is just around the corner. In friendly games this does not matter much anyway, AoS is rather balanced.

    Follow the RULE OF COOL.

A good looking model will always be exactly that. And fun to build/Paint too!

Exactly this, the model you buy will always be that. So if you're not happy with it you shouldn't buy it.

Otherwise you risk spending a lot of time chasing the meta, if you're cool with that go ahead, but it is a risk.

  7. I am wondering if this could spark a larger debate on how to "formalise" narrative gaming, obviously there are no wrong ways to do it. But would a community based set of guidelines/common vocab would help people discuss and exchange their ideas more easily.

The GHB have published a lot of good content for Narrative gaming, but they don't necessarily provide a workable framework like this could...

2 - I will, as GM, elaborate the story. Based on previous event of the campain, previous decision taken, and finding a good reason to put the 2 opponents in conflict somewhere.

3 - Elaborate also the battle scenario that will match the story and involved forces. anyway, unlike in a matched play tournament, in the battle plan, opponent on the battlefield may not especial seek victory (over victory points) but more to achieve goals (killing a specific caracter from other army, reaching a specific point of the battle field to find item/path to somewhere/information...). My objective in this battleplans is not to try to elaborate a symetric or equilibred play, but to provide to both player ability to make story progress the way he may prefer by actions. So by this way, players will intend to win or dominate the battle to make the global story going "theire way" (or presenting theire faction as "the good" in this chapter of the story). I usually already provide outcome options to players befor the game, so they have an idea about what they have to acomplish and decision "winer" of the battle will be able to take.

I really love this approach ! I was planning on trying something similar with a friend, start a narrative campaign with just two people and one being a GM. This way it's not as much "winning the game" (because if that was the aim of the GM he could always make it happen) but developping the story.

And for your point 4) I was thinking of doing that with allegiance abilities/endless spells/artefacts, unlocking them as you go !

Used to like AoS but it definitely feels like there are too many old characters coming back from the old world and factions. It feels less and less like Age of Sigmar with each passing year and more and more like Warhammer 9th edition from a lore stand point.

I don't know why they even created it at this point as its not the game I fell in love with.

Oh wow, I've never seen anyone say that?
Who do you have in mind? Apart from Gotrek all the others always have been in Age of Sigmar lore haven't they?

I struggle to share your point of view. I wouldn't have imagined Kharadron, Idoneth, Lumineth in the World-That-Was setting at all...

If I'm totally honest with myself, I don't have nearly as much fun with AoS as I did WHFB, or several other games I've tried since. That said, it's as much circumstance as mechanics.

When I played WHFB, I mainly played one group of friends that all wanted to play for similar reasons; for everyone to have a good time with their cool armies and personal stories we worked up. My buddy usually won as he was the better strategist, but we all had a good time. We all moved before End Times hit.

Now it's AoS and, since GHB 1 dropped, the about the only people playing AoS here are ultra-competitive. I've tried to fall in line in order to have a fun game, but there's really only one guy I've found not dedicated to wiping me off the board turn one. And he's really moving more toward the competitive scene as well. I have three kids (two pretty young) and the other players are all a couple of hours away, so... I get to play maybe once every couple of months if I'm lucky. Not a lot of practice just makes it worse.

Combine this with some aspects of the game that make a bad time worse, like the double turn mechanic or abilities that let deathstars fight twice without a reaction and I've been finding lately that I'm just not enjoying the game. Which is a shame, because the lore is fun and it's really fun to build and paint armies for it.

Have you tried Narrative oriented games? the NEOs are doing an amazing job and on the Animosity Discord server we've touched on that a few times, you don't need to be in a competitive environment to have fun and a lot of people are interested in that , they might just be less vocal.

Actually the Chaos Warriors were the horde with the guys who did great ascended to be Chosen ones.

The marauders were always the free roaming tribes joining fights to impress their gods. So basically the cannon fodder.

But all stories i read had hordes of chaos warriors lead by a chaos lord or demon prince.

I leave this "Mark of Chaos" trailer here with you guys. After watching it, it becomes clear why so many people are upset about the warriors.

They are so much bigger and badder than other warriors ! The way it should be :D 'tis the way ...

If you don't know about it, there is a Soulbound Discord Channel where you can ask all the questions you have. The producer Emmet and several of the writers and contributors are on that channel and are replying to questions basically every day, in addition to other people who'll help you out: https://discord.gg/JNhV8M

Hey ! Is this discord channel still existing ? The link hasn't worked for me...

On another note! People might already be aware but I thought I'd relay it, the Animosity campaign event is including Soulbound in the event https://animositycampaigns.com/how-to-participate/

That might be an opportunity to meet more people, play some games.

You could also try an exalted Deathbringer list that can activate the Khorgorath again on the Deathbringer's triple, with some Blood Warriors and Blood Reaver Chieftan as backups.

    - 1 x Blood Reaver Chieftan

    - 1 x Exalted Deathbringer

    - 1 x Khorgorath

    - 2 x Blood Warrior with dual Axes

    - 3 x Blood Reaver with Reaver Axes

Due to the many types of units across many different profiles and points costs, there are many different ways to run Khorne Mortals. You can nearly always fit in your heavy hitters along side your cheaper options without ever really sacrificing your unit count.

Thanks for your post was really useful ! Do you have any advice on how you would split your Hammer, Shield and Dagger with this list?

Edit : I haven't seen any mentions of Furies or the Raptoryx, are they not providing anything to the Khorne warbands (especially the mortals)?

Yeah, STD feels a bit lacklustre compared to other battletomes. In our group (we're 6 players, all with different armies) the STD player struggles the most (he plays very Khorne-heavy STD but doesn't use the optimal units like marauders so he's far from a powergamer) to a point where I guess he'd perform better with Blades of Khorne allegiance. It's sad to watch Ironjawz vs STD as it's pretty one-sided and to me (old Warhammer player) feels terribly weird to see Orruks being so much stronger than Chaoswarriors. I still don't get how Ardboys are simply better at everything and cost the same/less.

The non-incentive to play the allegiance is actually what bothers me the most, I don't play competitively but still like to think of interesting lists (usually one that is really good at something but with one or two obvious flaws) that will have a chance of winning some games.

If the only way to play StD is mono-god, and never competes with an actual army of that god then what's the point. xD

After playing a bit with this book, if I could only change one thing I'd change how the allegiance ability interacts with marks. After playing a bit of a narrative Slaanesh/Khorne list, I was dissapointed by how limited I felt by the marks only being triggered when a hero was near (usually meaning I had to pay a hero tax to get a benefit out of allegiance abilities). In the end, I found it better to build around one mark, which goes against the idea of Slaves to Darkness being a mix of chaos warriors coming together (as opposed to the monogod books). I would love it if they changed it so any marked unit got their mark's benefit, and a hero being nearby triggered the mark's general benefit.

To me, that would feel much nicer as I could build a mixed list without constantly thinking about hero tax to use the allegiance ability.

So much this, I struggle to paint mine because I don't know what Mark I want to put them and I just feel like there's so little interactions in between marks that are actually encouraged. I will probably mark them all subtly just a head or a symbol so they can be used with the various ones.

Also it annoys me that there are 5 marks, 5 Warshrine, but only 4 marks for the daemon prince, and the Tzeentch one isn't even a wizard...

I was really looking forward to that book and in the end I am mostly disappointed... I also dislike that there are no interactions at all with Mortals Rotbringers/Bloodbound/Arcanites. I mean they answer the Call of Archaon as often  as daemons...
