I haven't examined the new materials under close scrutiny yet. That said, here's my cursory assessment. Maggotkin have a strong set of allegiance abilities and most of our synergies affect keywords that BoC units lack (MORTAL, DAEMON, PESTILENS, etc). I think we have plenty of options already available to our allegiance and BoC don't really provide any new tools that we were missing. Bestigors are awesomely offensive, but I think we can achieve this same level of fast-hitty-horde with things we already have (Marauders, Monks) and for less points-investiture. I think there are definitely some appropriate situations for synergy. For example, an all nurgle-marked BoC army would benefit from the support of a GUO with a bell or a Lord of Blight's CA.  But if you want to build a competitive list, you are probably going to maximize your keyword synergies. This means that a list with BoC units will probably have to mostly be BoC units and then you need to make a decision between which allegiance ability set makes more sense for your army. I am assuming that the BoC nurgle battalion is the only way to mark BoC units as NURGLE but maybe I'm wrong about this.

I have a large number of BoC units, so I will be continuing to examine the possibilities here moving forward.

Good Points - since playing at Throne of Skulls as my first Tournament I often tend to think of Fluffy and Fun Compositions with a competetive Chance rather than strictly max. competetive.  I believe you are right regarding our existing Syngergies in Tournament Play. If someone was already playing a Mix of Deamons/ Skaven/ Mortals or even Tamurkhans Horde, I think Bestigors might still be a nice addition.

I myself am toying with a Tamurkhans Horde List containing the Man himself, 6 Bile Troggoths for Punch, 3x5 Blightkings as Battleline and some Magic Support. Beastmen might be a nice addition, adding Bodys and Punsh.

    Best regards

    Chris

  2. Sooo..are we allowed to take the new Beasts of Chaos Nurgle Battalion and still keep our Maggotkin Allegiance? If so, whats the difference compared to the Plaguetouched Warband? If not, why are these Battalions includes in the BOC Battletome without being able to ally with Maggotkin?

The usefulness of the Battalion seems debatable:

200 Pts., dying Units from the Battalion explode and cause a Mortal Wound on a 2+ for every enemy Unit within 7" (I believe?); everything gets the Nurgle Keyword.

Might at least be a way to add some "cheap" punsh, using Bestigors?

  3. Hey,

    as I don´t really like drones (I know, I know)I´m looking for a alternative hammer-unit.

What do you guys think of a Unit of 6 Bile Troggoths? I think they are one of the clear winners of the FW Update.

They do have the same basi size, worse movement, but 5W each with a 4+ Save, regenerating D3 Wounds a turn. Main Weakness would be low bravery of 5 (have to reserve one CP for them) and lack of synergies (would love for them to have the MORTAL keyword).

Offensively a Unit of 6 does have :

6 Short Range (7") Shooting attacks, at 3+/3+/-2/D3 (+1MW on 6 to hit)

    18 Melee (2") attacks at 4+/3+/-1/2

    They are 180Pts for 3.

    Thoughts?

List thoughts? It's my attempt at a dreadwood threat overload

    Allegiance: Sylvaneth
    Mortal Realm: Ghyran
    Spirit of Durthu (380)
    - General
    - Trait: Realm Walker
    - Artefact: Ghyrstrike
    Treelord Ancient (300)
    - Artefact: Moonstone of the Hidden Ways
    - Deepwood Spell: Regrowth
    Drycha Hamadreth (280)
    - Deepwood Spell: The Reaping
    Branchwraith (80)
    - Artefact: Ranu's Lamentiri
    - Deepwood Spell: Verdant Blessing
    Branchwych (80)
    - Deepwood Spell: Throne of Vines
    5 x Spite-Revenants (70)
    5 x Spite-Revenants (70)
    5 x Spite-Revenants (70)
    5 x Spite-Revenants (70)
    6 x Kurnoth Hunters (400)
    - Scythes
    Outcasts (90)
    Dreadwood Wargrove (90)
    Soulsnare Shackles (20)

    Total: 2000 / 2000
    Extra Command Points: 2

plan is get first turn, deep strike the hunters at the weakest point. TLA deepstrikes there as well, and Durthu either realm walks in to help, or hits with with Drycha in the second wave. Shackles are there to throw at the opposite end of the army to try to fix them in place. Branchwraith starts the dryad factory, and branchwych gets mid field, or on an objective and casts Throne to act as Sprite Bomb (with Drycha) and prime dispeller.

I´ve ben planning to play the exact same list or a variation in an upcoming tournament (Throne of Skulls at Warhammer Fest Europe) but am not sure about artefact choices. I think with Dreadwood the main draw is the 6" Alpha Strike and I like to have as many options as possible.

Thats why I would recommend the acorn on the branchwych or branchwraith and the flitterfurys on Drycha. This way I can, depending on opponent placement, block his way/LoS with an early wyldwood to his face, drop in 6 Hunters to kill key targets or drop Drycha for an 18" aoe bomb.

My variation would be to swap Durthu and the Shackles for 6 Bow Hunters. I know they seem rather weak but I am not sure if I want to play without some ranged threat; especially against a chaff-heave enemy army.

I´m also debating on dropping the Branchwych for some endless spells (pendulum or cogs?)

    What do you think?

Isn’t it like this for the Lord Celestant though? On foot, on Dracoth, on Stardrake, with Gavriel and Vandus being named versions, and Gavriel even getting his own model with no generic equivalent?

You are right but ruleswise they are so different that I did consider them! So from a fluff perspective its the same, from a rules perspective Lord Arcanum feels a lot like copy paste.

You know, everyone can already assume what the non named versions of the missing models might look like ruleswise...

  6. You know what i find quite disappointing (although i could have known it in advance)?

The massive usage of one type of Hero: Lord Arcanum!

We have: On foot, on Charger, on Dracoline, on Tauralon as well as two of those as named versions. They share the Storm Cycle, the Suicide Flasks, the pimped Arcane Bolt and partly even the Command Ability.

I know we are spoiled but at least for the named versions i was hoping for a more creative approach (See Nighthaunt!!)
