So in the last few months, I've fallen into the usual trap of getting distracted - by new shiny releases, old rediscovered projects, etc. As a result I've fallen behind in what I'm meant to be focusing on - a new Destruction army for this year's 6 Nations in Scotland, and finishing off my Golden Demon entries in Warhammer Fest in May.
Oh - and regularly updating this blog. I think I can probably file that under "never gonna happen"
    So - to business!

With Golden demon just under a month away I've been furiously painting, trying to get entries ready for the big day. I've a few WIP images but i'll share those at a later date, once the competition is over - as only some are AOS related they may not interest the vast majority of readers here
However, on the new army side of things I can show off some images.
For this year's Six Nations in scotland, I've decided to shelve my flesh eaters, and build up a destruction army. In case you're not aware, one of the rules is that each team needs to bring a minimum of 1 grand allegiance each. In our local scene there arent many destruction playser, so I decided that I'd take the initiative and build up an Ogor army, using my old 8th ed army as a basis.
I always liked the ogors as an army. The relatively low model count allows me to go all out with conversions, freehand details, etc. I also liked the idea of building an army that wasn't seen everywhere. I've never counted myself as being overly "competitive" so building a cool themed army was more important to me.
The rough concept I'm working with is a roaming tribe of ogors on the plains of Ghur. I'm gonna lean into the tribal motif, so tribal tattoos, shamanic masks, etc.

The list is built around the gutbuster wartribe batallion

As it stands, the list is as follows:
Butcher (140) - Artefact : Collar of Domination
Tyrant (160) - General - Command Trait : Might is Right - Great Gutgouger - Artefact : Battered Talisman Units
    9 x Ironguts (600)
3 x Ogors (120) -Ogor Clubs or Blades with Iron Fists
    6 x Leadbelchers (280)
12 x Ogors (400) -Ogor Clubs or Blades with Iron Fists
6 x Ogors (240) -Ogor Clubs or Blades with Iron Fists
    Gutbuster Wartribe (60)
    Total: 2000/ 2000
I'm playing around with using the old Bragg the Gutsman model as a tyrant, converted to have a Baron Samedi feel - complete with battered top hat!
I'll try and keep some updates of how the army looks as i finish off units. For now, the aim is to get everything built and on the right bases. For more up to date entries check out my instagram page @brush_lickers_anonymous

New year, new me, new attempt to keep updating this blog regularly!
Last weekend I attended Heat 1 in Warhammer World as part of the Grand Tournament for Age of Sigmar. I thought  I'd note down a few observations from the weekend.
First off I'd like to compliment all 5 of my opponenets - Rob Symes, Sam Wilson, Matt Lyons, Simon Froley and Stu Orman. Each one was a pleasure to play against, and each game came right down to the wire. The game against Simon's Ironjawz was a real nailbiter, coming down to the final throw of the dice.
Secondly, it never ceases to amaze at the sheer breath of hobby and skill on show in the armies. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a wide field of armies at the event - everything from grots and a gutbuster gunline, to stormcast and tzeentch and everything in between! The difference in the level of hobby on show compared to that I'm usually exposed to was truly inspiring, and I came away from the event possessed of a drive to push my army painting skills, and try for something truly spectacular as my next army. As of now I have no idea what shape that will take but I'll keep you all updated (or at least I'll try to!)
The list I took was a Flesh Eater Court force I'd been working on since the book was released. I'd brought it to the 6 nations event last year and had some sucess with it. I had a fairly good idea of what the list could and couldn't do, but mostly I was happy with how it had turned out from a painting standpoint so I decided to bring it on that basis.

    Allegiance: Flesh Eater Courts
    - Delusion: The Grand Tournament
    Leaders
    Crypt Infernal Courtier (140)
    - General
    - Command Trait : Dark Wizardry
Abhorrant Ghoul King on Terrorgheist (400)
Abhorrant Ghoul King on Zombie Dragon (440)
    Crypt Ghast Courtier (80)
    Units
    9 x Crypt Flayers (480)
    10 x Crypt Ghouls (100)
    30 x Crypt Ghouls (300)
    Reinforcement Points (60)
The reinforcement points would be used to summon either 5 wolves or a cairn wraith to grab an objective late game (something I forgot in 4 of the 5 games!)
But enough of that, moving onto the meat of the event, the games themselves. I wont go through the games blow by blow, but here are a few highlights:
Game 1: Total conquest. Rob Symes and Seraphon

First game was against Mr Honest Wargamer himself, Rob Symes. Rob was bringing a seraphon army, revolving around an engine of the gods, two bastilodons and a large block of Kroxigor. Having never played against Seraphon, I was completely unprepared for the speed and sheer bonkers tricks they could pull out. I misdeployed leaving my terrorgheist exposed on one flank, with only a unit of horrors in support. As a result, he was promptly machine gunned off the board by a teleporting pack of razordons before he got to get his claws wet!
On the opposite flank, Rob's kroxigor exploded into my lines, wiping out my unit of 9 flayers and making short work of my zombie dragon. The army crumbled shortly after, and Rob walked away with a well deserved major win.
Highlight of the game: By the end of the game, Rob had managed to activate the engine of the gods in each of his 3 turns, giving him a total of 6 turns by the games end. Conversly, i'd only managed 3
Game 2: Scorched Earth. Sam Wilson's Beastclaw Raiders

this game was another first, as I'd never actually fought a pure beastclaw raiders army. Sam's army was absolutely gorgeous to look at, and had all the big monsters you'd expect to see - a pair of thundertusks flanking a stonehorn. Straight away this put me at a disadvantage as my main source of damage for heavy armour - my flayers mortal wounds - was turned off by the thundertusk's cold aura effect. As a result I had to rely on my own monsters to take down his, while my flayers adopted the role of objective claimers.

I learned from the previous game, and carefully deployed my ghouls to screen my own objectives as best I could. Having my courtier hidden at the back allowed me to keep my lines intact, and as a result I was able to secure my objectives while attacking Sam's flank with the flayers. As a result they managed to punch through his lines while my terrorgheist and zombie dragon slugged it out with his larger beasts. My terrorgheist was probably the man of the match here, tanking the damage from two thundertusks and a unit of yhetees, before healing himself back up and charging the last corner of the board to secure the final objective. I managed to pull off a win at the end, but it was a great game against a gorgeous army and really nice guy.

Highlight of the game: The entire game was a feast for the eyes, but having Sam's hunter sprinting back and forth across his backline, javellining any beasts that came close enough, was particularly memorable
Game 3: Knife to the Heart. Matt Lyons with Stormcast Eternals

The final game was against Matt Lyons of Pro Painted Podcast and Black Sun fame. Matt was using a striking stormcast army in a gorgeous yellow and black colour scheme, with a unit of Kharadron endrinriggers as allies.

From the start I knew I was at a disadvantage, as one major weakness of my force is that it does not compete in the shooting phase. As a result i could either play for the minor, play defensively and hope to eke out a win. Or I could go agressive, throw everything I had at the opposing army and hope for a win. Given I wanted to give my opponent a game and I'm never one to play against theme, I went for the latter. My wave of screaming flesh eaters swarmed across the board, crashed into Matt's lines in the centre of the board, and subsequently was routed by the stormcast. The endrinriggers were particularly impressive, using the grapnel launcher to get to places I thought safe. Matt knew exactly how to counter my army, removing the courtiers to stop the army coming back, then whittling the remaining characters down until all that remained were a few lowly ghouls, who were no doubt left wondering where their bigger more imposing friends had gone to! Matt was a pleasure to play against, and we had a great chat about the projects we were working on and future projects we were planning. Matt took a well deserved major win from the game and the first day drew to a close with a Major Win and 2 Major losses under my belt.
I'll cover the second day and overall results in a subsequent post, along with my final thoughts on the event overall, as well as my plans for future events.
As always, any comments or observations are welcome and appreciated!

Ok, so I maaaaay have forgotten to post my regular updates as
However, I managed to get a game in last week in the local GW against a Freeguild Aelves alliance - really interesting force that I'm looking forward to see how it grows. The game was a proper back and forth affair, and I just managed to seal the win, thanks to my Crypt Ghast courtier unhorsing his general in an honorable joust. Or at least, that's what the Courtier saw from his point of view! I snapped a quick photo of the army post game. Really pleased with how the force is shaping up as a whole now.

Continuing on with the theme of the courts and their deluded visions of grandeur, I converted up my Courtier to represent a knight leading the lowly men at arms to battle. Ser Retch Gribbleskin, Champion of the Crimson Vale:

I quite like the idea that the courtier's madness has progressed to such a degree that he visualises everything from the trophy on his back's perspective, unaware that he's essentially acting as his own mount. I toyed with the idea of giving the skeleton a mask or draping a tattered cloth over the ghoul, similar to how the Bretonnian horses were garbed for war. However, in the end I think leaving it relatively blank and letting you fill in the blanks yourself adds something to the model overall.

I'd also been toying around with how I could add something to the standard ghouls to make them a little more unsettling. I toyed with the idea of giving them all masks, but I quite like the idea of the masks being a conceit for the heroes of the force. So instead, I grabbed a few Goblin Town goblins i had lying around, did a few quick weapon swaps, added some greenstuff and the result is shown below!

I quite like the idea that Neferata can't bear the sight of these foul creatures faces, and will only bear their presence if they hide their faces with elaborate courtly masks. Of course, the lowly peasants can't afford such highborn trinkets, so they are reduced to hiding their faces with mirrored masks - the better to reflect their queens beauty. Mirror, Mirror, on the Ghoul...
The banner was an opportunity to practice an idea I've had rattling around for some time. It's a bit overwrought for a unit of blood thirsty cannibals, but I can always say its a magical banner reflecting an element of their delusions into the real world!

The next Blog post should hopefully drop next week. I'm aiming to grab the Deathrattle start collecting box for Neferata and to convert up a unit of blood knights - again i'll be playing with the deluded nature of the flesh eaters so hopefully the result wont be what you expect! All going well I'll also have an update on my Golden Demon plans for this year - I think I've finally settled on my Age of Sigmar entries for the single miniature and the unit - watch this space!
I'll leave you with a few close ups of the Crypt Hauter courtier and the necromancer for my force. The necromancer forms the core of my AOS28 force, along with the troupe of mirrored ghouls. I plan on adding a black coach in the near future to his band of performers - he needs some way of transporting his flayed skin big top after all!

If you've stumbled onto this blog after plumbing the depths of the TGA community, welcome! You've tried the best, now try the rest!
Little background for you before we get started. I've been actively involved in the hobby for the past 15 years. I first got hooked in on the Lord of the Rings back when the two towers was first released. Some of you might remember the fortnightly magazine series that came with the figures and paints - I learned a huge amount of my early hobby skills from those, and only ventured into my local GW after maybe two years of painting my burgeoning collection. Fast forward and I've now tried my hand at every game system and most armies for each. My main focus had revolved around 40k for a number of years. I fell out of love with Warhammer fantasy after the shift to 8th edition - I found the size of armies too daunting a task to paint, and my focus would always have been of a more painterly interest. However, the more free form of AOS drew me right back in. I dusted off my old empire armies, picked up where i'd left off on my elves (new and improved with vitamin A!) and dived right back in. Thankfully the game has gone from strength to strength in my local scene, so I've now got a reason to get my painting projects completed and onto the table. Which is where this blog comes in
Last year I managed to start and fully paint a small flesh eater court force. This year, as part of my hobby resolutions, I want to expand that out to a full 2000 point force, with a view to taking it along to the Age of Sigmar 6 Nations in June as part of the Republic of Ireland Team. So to aid me in that, I'll be trying to keep an up to date blog with all my progress, stories of my games, and any other relevant hobby goodness I find relevant or diverting.

A lot of my projects will start off after I latch onto a theme, or I'm intrigued by a story, and the background of the flesh eaters really grabbed my attention. I loved the idea that these "noble knights" were really slobbering mangy monsters. Picture a ghoul trying to curtsey, and you're on the right track for the ideas swirling around in my head. I also loved the idea of a really viscious swarm of monsters charging across the tabletop, similar to how vampires have been shown in things like Van Helsing or the zombies in World War Z. So I began to think what would make these horrible ghouls and monsters even creepier?
Put them in clown masks of course!

The eventual end point of the force would be based on a court of Neferata's admirers and courtiers (or so they would believe). However, the only way she would tolerate their loathsome "affections" is if they hid their hideous faces behind stylised masks. So with that theme in mind, all the heroes within my force have their faces hidden behind venetian style masks.
The most recent part I've managed to complete for the force is the terrorgheist - a model I'd always wanted to build and paint, but never had the cause to.

While i'm not sure I'd want to build another one, I'm really happy with how the beast turned out, and I'm now planning a conversion for the zombie dragon that my Crypt Lord will ride - I must be a glutton for punishment!
I think that will suffice for now. As I say I'll try my best to stick with one project at a time - My hobby resolution this year is to finish more stuff than I start.
    What could possibly go wrong?

    ......ah.....
